Half-Way Decent as a Reference, Not Much More.......2001-12-15

This particular book shows some promise w/ all the illustrations, but really falls short of my expectations. The descriptions of what's going on in each step are REALLY vague, and tend to be more confusing than helpful.

I've got quite a bit of experience over the years w/ Access, but just wanted some sort of refresher. This book MIGHT be ok if you only wanted a really basic reference of some sort, but I'm sure that better ones are out there anyways.

For someone looking for a beginner's book of some sort, stick w/ the Dummies' series, or the 24-hour books.

WOrking with MS Products has a strong visual component. I liked this book because the pictures and explanations are very clear. This allows one to pick up a procedure or skill very quickly. A very good book for beginners to intermediates. So so for advanced, although the coverage of Pivot tables is pretty good

This is a book about shareholders -- who they are, what they own, how their composition and character has changed, and with it their relationship with the companies they own. It is also a book about shareholder rights and responsibilities. In a clear and readable style the book explores the key current corporate governance issues -- company law and reporting, chief executive pay, regulatory and accountability requirements -- against the background of an ever-changing business environment: an environment in which private investors may have grown in number, but in which shareholders influence has dwindled as institutions have become the dominant shareholding group. Throughout the book the authors provide numerous examples and anecdotes illustrating the evolution of the joint stock company from the South Sea Company of the 18th century to the giants and cause celebres on the corporate stage in the 1980s and 1990s. Both authors are authoritative and informed commentators on issues of corporate governance with extensive management, policy and advocacy experience; their underlying concern is to show the importance of shareholder interest and involvement, which they strongly believe will remain in the best interests of the company and the wider society in the 21st century.

Important in moving shareholders from speculators to owners........1999-10-09

Much has been written about the role of directors and boards but far too little on the how shareholders can add value. Carolyn Kay Brancato did so in her excellent book, "Institutional Investors and Corporate Governance." However, Brancato was primarily writing from the perspective of managers. Although there was general recognition that shareholders can add value, the thrust of the book was on what managers need to know about shareholders and how to attract shareholders who will support them. Charkham and Simpson take a larger societal viewpoint. At bottom, they are concerned not with what is best for managers but what system will best provide the goods and services that society needs.

The authors provide a short history of the corporation, from the Bubble Act of 1720, which circumscribed the use of charters, through general enabling laws and subsequent limited liability acts. They discuss the legal framework of directors, the voluntary Cadbury Code, the growth of activist investors such as LENS, UK Active Value Fund and end with a discussion of needed reforms.

A four year study of British proxy voting shows a marginal decline in votes cast in favor of management, from 99.3% to 98.6%. This is not exactly strong evidence of a shareholder revolution. The potential is there but the current system is riddled with "practical inefficiencies," "outmoded rules," and "conflicts of interest which prevent effective oversight by institutional shareholders, who are in turn not required to be accountable to those on whose behalf they invest."

While Charkham and Simpson acknowledge that no country can afford to impose burdens on shareholders if it hopes to attract international capital, at bottom they appear to want to stand Milton Friedman on his head. Instead of "the only social responsibility of business is to make a profit," they appear to be working toward a world where the only businesses to make a profit will be those that are socially responsible. But their expressed concerns in this area aren't for specific measures, such as being kind to animals, but to the larger framework which defines the rights and behavior of owners. For example, one of the major changes they seek is for institutions to be less diversified. Holdings should not be too fragmented to warrant investment of time and resources in monitoring. This would shift institutions away from speculation to investment.

In Britain, institutions hold about 80% of the market. Cadbury indicated voting rights are an asset and should be exercised on behalf of those for whom the institution invests. Trustees must be able to demonstrate their voting activity is prudent, carried out with care and in the sole interests of beneficiaries. Charkham and Simpson are ready to move shareholder responsibility to the next level by asserting that trustees not only have a fiduciary duty to monitor companies and vote on behalf of shareholders but also to take positive action if problems are looming. "The duty of care extends to maintaining the health of the company." (p. 145)

Some of their proposed reforms are specific to the British situation, but many are not. One of their more innovative is that dividends should include a bonus for those that voted in the last election. They would like to see a growth of shareholder associations and "deeper" share ownership. Included are ideas for making the annual meeting more than a ritual. One is to give shareholders the right to do more that vote down pay. Let them amend pay. The authors oppose the use of options as in incentive for CEOs and directors. They note the quality of reporting on non-financials (environment, social) needs dramatic improvement and that training for trustees should be mandatory.

In general, the authors argue that ownership of a significant proportion of a company's shares imposes obligations. Just as the tax system obligates those who earn more to pay more, owners with larger holdings should be held to an enhanced duty of care. Larger shareholders have resources and interest that others lack. All fiduciaries have an obligation to see that shares are voted, records are kept of votes and reports are made to beneficiaries. These obligations apply to insurers and mutual funds, as well as to pension funds.

Charkham and Simpson are at the cutting edge of democratic corporate governance. Their vision fits nicely with the technology of the internet which will facilitate the spread of democracy into the world of finance. Widespread reading of Fair Shares and Ms. Simpson's move to the World Bank are sure to add movement to their vision.

Comprehensive and thorough.......2002-12-26

Having been a student with Harvey Miller probably makes my review somewhat biased. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book if you're a student or professional in the field of GIS and need to know how GIS can be applied in transportation, or vice versa, knowing tranportation, this book will tell you what GIS can do for you. Mind you, this is not for the fainthearted, this is solid academic work and presumes some academic knowlegde prior to reading this book. It is specked with references that are hard to get, and you are likely to spend more time in the library reading up on the bibliography than digesting the actual text. Still, if GIS-T is your line of research, you cannot avoid having this book. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen. It is clear that the authors posess solid knowledge and have covered a wide field and left nothing out. It may have a rather inhibitive price; in hindsight it was well worth the money spent.

My friend Patty gave me this book and I promptly ordered all the copies I could lay my hands on and gave them to my dog loving friends. It was also helpful that my own dog is named Buster - Buster Brown - a Welsh Corgi of noble breeding and a penchant for getting into trouble - just like Buster our canine hero - and through the pages I could hear my own Buster explaining away his aversion for discipline, an orderly house, baths, and dog food. A delightful romp in a park without a leash!

I loved this book. It caught my attention and had me roped in until the very last word. Personally I do not like to read at all, it is one of my least favorite things to do, but I really enjoyed this book. It was about a dog-named Buster and his owner. Buster was an adopted dog who was lucky to be placed in a loving house with the famous journalist Roy Hattersley. Buster lived in London and their he started his diaries. Poor Buster had some mishaps during his life, one which involved a goose that the queen clamed was hers but this incident made Buster famous. This book is easy to understand and could entertain almost any age from children to adults. Over all it is a great story with lots of little surprises along the way.

I am reading this book with my 11 year old son, he a dog lover and I a cat lover. However, we both adore Buster. His releationship to his "man" is endering and the dogs antics are so funny. Funnist but tender is the authors understanding of the releationship as it unfolds between a young dog and his owner.
Wish Buster would write more books!

Wonderful Observations From Man's True Best Friend.......2001-02-23

Buster's Diaries is truly a love letter to all canines and their owners. This book is extremely easy and simple to read and can be appreciated by any age group. I however not implying that this book is superficial or shallow. Buster's observations are written in a succinct and witty manner without overly ponderous or sappy descriptions. I think any dog owner can relate to many of the observations in this book. There were several times I found myself cracking up because I was sure my dog could empathise with Buster's many predicaments and situations.

Without being overly preachy or obvious I feel the author does a wonderful job of detaling the many rewards of opening your heart and home to a dog from the pound. After reading this book I will surely pay more attention to my dog's actions and reactions.

A dog's eye view.......2001-02-11

Poor Buster sprang to public infamy in 1996 when he was accused of wantonly killing a goose in St. James' Park. Unbenownest to Buster or his "man" the goose was under the royal protection of the Queen...and Buster's future is in danger. The following media circus leaves one to wonder who the animals really are. However, Buster has found his way into the hearts of the common public. Covering the time when he first remembers leaving the protection of family, and hearth; through various homes and care societies, Buster keeps a keen eye on man and his foiables. He details the delicate dance between a dog and his owner. He is wary and more than a bit amused by some of the training techniques foisted upon him. It is his good nature that carries the book. While reminding the reader that he is but a few steps from a wolf, Buster discovers the delights of having a home. This is a delightful little book, written with a wry sense of the ironic.

DO NOT buy this text book! I recommend buying a different inorganic chemistry book, perhaps Chang. This book is awful. My fellow students, friends, and professor (who required us to buy it) all agree.

I will not say too much. I think it will be enough to quote from Ayn Rand's "The Voice of Reason; Essays in Objectivist Thought". The book written and the class taught by Glen Rodgers is "perceptual level history, history as nothing but a torrent of unrelated, disintegrated concretes."

This is a poorly written textbook. The worst part is you have to buy the solutions manual separately and I can't find it anywhere.

Dr. Marshall does a great job of explaining the water problems and the grass roots efforts of activists within the Appalachian region. Though the price is kinda steep, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in environmental activism.
