5 out of 5 stars Microsoft Money 2004 for Dummies by Peter Weverka.......2005-09-20

I have been using Microsoft Money to manage my finances and portfolio since 1999. I thought I knew how to use it until I began reading this book. Mr. Weverka has shown me how little I really new about the capabilities and ease of use of this excellent program. It is written so that ordinary people such as myself can easily understand it, with touches of humor to lighten the tedium. Thank you, Peter Weverka!

5 out of 5 stars Money 2004 Made Easy........2003-10-25

The author of this book makes keeping track of your money with Money 2004 easy to understand. It tells you how to set up your account, pay bills online, and even create monthly reports. There's even a part on tracking your investments, planning for the future, and preparing for tax time. I recommend this book to anyone who has Money 2004!

      Book Description

The first theoretical analysis of the Asian Financial Crisis--perhaps the single most important economic event of the 1990s--starts by presenting a factual and analytic overview of what happened. It goes on to consider why crisis turned into collapse, speculative attacks, and contagion and finishes with a round table discussion of policy issues. The distinguished contributors are from organizations including IMF, the World Bank and the Bank for International Settlements. This is vital reading for policy professionals as well as researchers and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines.

                        Description:
The growing interest in the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) to revolutionize the way in which business conducts trading activities leads to research questions concerning the characteristics of electronic partnerships that promote implementation success. The research model in this study shows that partnership attributes affect EDI implementation, which has three dimensions: integration, utilization, and diversity, and performance. Partnership attributes encompass partner trust, interdependence, and commitment. Results show that partner trust, interdependence, and commitment affect the extent to which companies undertake EDI integration and increase the percentage of EDI exchange and performance. This suggests that companies contemplating EDI should set up compatible business processes and a high-quality partner relationship for implementation and performance.

By all accounts, Henry Seine should have packed it in long ago, certainly before he started scanning marine distress channels for fun. But sixteen-hour days spent hauling heavy cargo aboard tugs and icebreakers along the frozen arctic offshore (not to mention smoking copious amounts of Cannabis indica) can warp a man’s sense of reality. Desperate for real human contact, he tunes the sideband radio to 2182 kHz (twenty-one eighty-two kilohertz), the international distress channel, in the vague hope of finding someone he can save.

Soon, though, even the paycheck that fattens his wallet each season isn’t enough to fix his interest. Seine journeys south, but weathers a capsizing that leaves his fellow crewmen dead. Unable to break from his old habits, and haunted by the ghosts of dead shipmates, he flies north for another season. One day, idly monitoring 2182, Seine catches a fading distress call from somewhere out in the circumpolar twilight. A scientist named Louis Moneymaker is trapped alone on an ice floe that threatens to melt beneath his feet. Cobbling together a motley rescue team–the frostbitten Wolf, a six-foot-eight Russian known as Big Man, a tattooed Eskimo nicknamed the Buff, and an intrepid, dark-eyed sailor named Julia–Seine travels farther north than he’s ever gone, determined to save Moneymaker and exorcise his demons in one grand sweep.

2182 kHz combines the white-knuckle adventure of The Perfect Storm with the dark humor and deadpan wit of Chuck Palahniuk to create an absorbing tale of search-and-rescue. David Masiel introduces us to a compelling antihero who is only one step away from either destruction or salvation.

The main gripe of other reviewers seems to be that the book fails to fit into a particular genre. So what? I did not enjoy Masiel's other book, but decided to give this one a try and thoroughly enjoyed it. The scene of the tug's knockdown is horrifyingly realistic and artfully described. Seine's attempt to grapple with his own demons and the lure of the north strikes me as authentic if somewhat Kafkayesque. If you are looking for a purely nautical thriller that fits neatly into the genre this is probably not for you. If you want a tautly written novel about one man's experience , I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2003-12-07

It seems the writers of all these negative reviews are missing the point. This is a series of emotions, composite characters and anecdotes from working in Alaska that has been fictionalized for print. This stuff is too bizarre for fiction -- it has to be based in the truth. This is the very definition of a sea story. If I have any critisism, it is that I don't think the author ever really decided if he wanted to write a Spike Walker book or a Sam Llewellyn mystery. But that's not the point.

Here is a peek inside a world most of us will never know, and I'm grateful for it. Having spent ridiculiously long periods of time at sea in the Navy, seeing and doing things no one will ever believe, I can relate to this insanity. The way the author structured the book only serves to drive home the experience. This is as real as fiction gets. So much the better if you can't fit it neatly into a genre box.

An absolutely killer read from a very talented writer. Don't miss it.

                              1 out of 5 stars laughably inept!.......2003-09-09

This book is a laugh, though not intentionally. A pathetic load of moldy fish heads like this is what we get when somebody decides to paint by numbers. This is nothing more than a flim-flam regurgitation of every bad B-movie plot since men in tights fought giant ants. The howling storms, the pitching seas, the inane and unbelievable "cutesy" dialogue, the stilted paragraphs of self-important boredom, the unrealistic adventure--the perfect storm becomes the imperfect yawn.

We've seen it all a thousand times before this, and here it is rehashed for us to such puny and unbearable effect. I don't know when I have last read such a perfect piece of junk. It was so obviously calculated to conform to the outlines of pop movie entertainment, and yet so laughably failing to live up to even the most banal of pop-junk multiplex effects. It's like sitting in the theater with the multiplex sound system exploding in your ears but nothing on the screen but frozen ships banging against one another in huge sprays of meaningless ice. You're left with a plastic, industrial, very unhealthy feeling that makes you want to run out to the lobby and heave-ho.

Drop this one into the garbage beneath the kitchen sink, absolutely dreadful, best forgotten. The only thing worse than this would be the actual movie starring a non-actor like Clooney or Costner--may the gods protect us from an experience that low, though I hold out no hope of being thrown a life preserver.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2003-07-20

What a rare combination. A novel about work written someone who has really done the work AND can really write a novel. Features one of the best female characters in modern fiction.

1 out of 5 stars PRETENTIOUS AND MISGUIDED.......2003-05-26

Hmm. It's hard to know what to think of this after the first two chapters. Quickly afterwards, it becomes clear that this is going nowhere and aggregating into nothing. Yes, there are characters, and yes, they "do things," but somehow none of it ever adds up. It's as though the author took all of the elements that go into a story, exaggerated them tremendously, and then settled them onto the page without any thought as to how they related to one another.

Thus, we have a hero, we have the backdrop of Alaska, we have a series of actions in an overdescribed melieu. Detail upon detail upon detail is ladled out, and it never takes us anywhere. This problem sinks down into the sentence level as well. Words are thrown together one after another awkwardly, as though the writer is reaching for a word--any word at all--and then committing to it without thought. Three quarters of the adjectives could have been cut from this to better effect. The ultimate result is like the feeling of a junkyard full of discarded industrial parts, through which we are led without much plan or purpose.

It's hard to find a genre for the resultant book. It is not an adventure story, because there is no sustained tension. It is not a love story, because the women exist more as abstract constructs than as real people. It is not a literary novel, as the highly developed style and imagistic resonance is missing.

The book is perhaps best described as a veil of shadows and fog and ice. It consists of all of the mechanical parts askew on the floor, without anyone bothering to lay them out in a way that makes sense, much less assemble a finished product.

It would be too easy to say that the result is disappointment. It is more accurate to say that I am bewildered.

The recent war in Bosnia re-ignited ancient hatreds and led to acts of brutality that echoed World War II atrocities: large-scale massacres and "ethnic cleansing". Bosnian Serbs, aided by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, systematically murdered, raped, and terrorized Bosnian Muslims as they strove to create a Greater Serbia. Now, journalist Tim Judah provides some perspective on the horrors of the Bosnian conflict with The Serbs. Make no mistake, Judah is not an apologist for Serbian excesses; rather, he aims to explicate the Balkans' long and violent history leading to this latest tragic conflict.

The Serbs begins with the establishment of a Serbian state in the Middle Ages, then follows Serb fortunes through ensuing centuries of conquest, conflict, and oppression. Ethnic cleansing in the Balkans is hardly unique to the Bosnian war; it has been a horrific element of all Balkan conflicts, and Judah convincingly argues that Serbian nationalism is an outgrowth of the Serbs' own sufferings as victims of ethnic cleansing in past conflicts. Anyone interested in current affairs--particularly in the Balkans--will find Tim Judah's The Serbs an engrossing and important exploration of the Bosnian conflict.

                                  Book Description

Who are the Serbs? Branded by some as Europe's new Nazis, they are seen by others—and by themselves—as the innocent victims of nationalist aggression and of an implacably hostile world media. In this challenging new book, Timothy Judah, who covered the war years in former Yugoslavia for the London Times and the Economist, argues that neither is true. Exploring the Serbian nation from the great epics of its past to the battlefields of Bosnia and the backstreets of Kosovo, he sets the fate of the Serbs within the story of their past.

This wide-ranging, scholarly, and highly readable account opens with the windswept fortresses of medieval kings and a battle lost more than six centuries ago that still profoundly influences the Serbs. Judah describes the idea of "Serbdom" that sustained them during centuries of Ottoman rule, the days of glory during the First World War, and the genocide against them during the Second. He examines the tenuous ethnic balance fashioned by Tito and its unraveling after his death. And he reveals how Slobodan Milosevic, later to become president, used a version of history to drive his people to nationalist euphoria. Judah details the way Milosevic prepared for war and provides gripping eyewitness accounts of wartime horrors: the burning villages and "ethnic cleansing," the ignominy of the siege of Sarajevo, and the columns of bedraggled Serb refugees, cynically manipulated and then abandoned once the dream of a Greater Serbia was lost.

This first in-depth account of life behind Serbian lines is not an apologia but a scrupulous explanation of how the people of a modernizing European state could become among the most reviled of the century. Rejecting the stereotypical image of a bloodthirsty nation, Judah makes the Serbs comprehensible by placing them within the context of their history and their hopes.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2007-04-28

This is a book which presents a history of Serbs in objective manner. Some says it is anti-Serb, but this is not true. It only mentions good as well as dark spots in Serbian history. All periods in Serbian history are covered sufficiently enough, although the emphasis (about half of the book) is on violent dissolution of Yugoslavia. This imbalanced coverage would be a shortcoming if this was a general history of Serbs, yet as its name tells this is not only a book on Serbs but also on destruction of Yugoslavia. When he deals with this period, some events (for example, economy in Serbia, details on atrocities) are given perhaps too great coverage and it would be better if this space were devoted to earlier periods in Serbian history.
Nevertheless, it is a book well worth money for buying and time for reading it.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Miserable propaganda.......2005-12-22

Throwing usnuported by the facts claims about Serbs and intentionally distorting the truth - are the only marks of this book. Good for garbage bin, as somebody already mentioned here.

1 out of 5 stars Devoid of historical seriousness or journalistic integrity.......2005-03-27

It is necessary to correct the current trend of public commentary, which tends, systematically, not to understand events in the former Yugoslavia but to construct a propagandistic version of Balkan rivalries, designed to validate the existing post-modern myths and prejudices. This book faithfully reflects the post-modern blinkers that its author has helped first create and then perpetuate in his "coverage" of the Wars of Yugoslav Succession. This book reflects his (and their) belief that the Orthodox nations of Southeast Europe - embodied in "the Serbs" - are The Other vis-a-vis "The West" in the Huntingtonian sense. The author's assumptions are prejudiced in a coarse, primordial manner.

Judah's mindset helps us understand why the problem of the Balkans under UN/EU/NATO/UNMIK/KFOR/SFOR. . . is inseparable from the quandary of America under the bipartisan regime inside the Beltway, or that of Europe "united" under the Leviathan of Brussels. This book unintentionally poses many questions, and answers none. Can any meaningful unity of nations sharing European heritage be restored? To what extent, how, and why has the modern, secular, "post-Christian" West inherited the antipathy of West to the carriers of the Byzantine tradition? How do those two traditions converge, and how do they diverge, amidst the continuing onslaught of globalized secularism? Such issues are not merely political. They are as much "cultural" as theological, and they have been political all along. It is on the way we deal with them today that the future of our civilization will depend, and it that endeavor Judah has decided to side with the bad guys.

A book is badly needed to counter Judah's prejudice and ignorance about an area of the Old Continent which need never be the "powder keg of Europe." Though the Balkans, however delineated, contain many states and even more nations, they have one thing in common: for most of history they have not been masters of their own fate, but objects of policy by dominant outside powers. Though depicted by Judah as aggressing against their neighbors and generating wider conflicts, the Serbs in most cases had these conflicts foisted upon them by powerful outsiders and their local minions.

In particular Judah's attempt to relativize the Ustasha genocide of some 500-700,000 Serbs is scandalous. Had the same apparatus of quasi-historical whitewash been applied to the victims of Treblinka, such book surely would not have seen the light of day - and rightly so.

Even if all history-as a philosopher argued-is in some measure contemporary history, it need not be dominated by the obsessions of the day. The cause of tolerance in a troubled region can never be advanced by misrepresentation or by the sentimental lapse of seriousness which judges one patriotism as admirable and condemns another as inadmissible. This book is found wanting on all fronts.

in May 1991, in Slavonia, two Croatian cops were kidnapped and tortured to death. 150 Croatian police responded to rescue them, and 12 Croats were lost in the gun battle.

                                    Book Description

The story of Pittsburgh's African Americans is deeply entwined with that of other ethnic groups, yet in many ways it is unique. Before the Civil War, Pittsburgh's rivers and proximity to the Mason-Dixon line made it a critical junction on the Underground Railroad and offered runaway slaves an important measure of freedom. Following the war, Pittsburgh offered increasing opportunities for white wage laborers, but not until World War I cut off the supply of European labor did the city's mines, mills, and factories open to black workers. This touched off a massive black migration from the South in search of economic opportunities and a better life. The discrimination that African Americans continued to face in Pittsburgh, as elsewhere in the nation, made their history a turbulent struggle for equality.

In the 1930s, the WPA's Federal Writers' Project provided work to thousands unemployed writers, editors, and researchers of all races. The monumental American Guide Series featured books on states, cities, rivers, and ethnic groups, opening an unprecedented view into the lives of the American people. University of Pittsburgh English professor J. Ernest Wright was selected to compile and edit "The Negro in Pittsburgh." He assembled an impressive, racially mixed team of writers and other professionals-including newspaper editors, teachers, preachers, and social workers-but when a hostile Congress abruptly terminated funding for the program in 1939, the nearly completed project languished, almost forgotten, in the depths of the Pennsylvania State Library. Never before published, The WPA History of the Negro in Pittsburgh combines the original texts with an insightful introduction and explanatory notes by historian Laurence Glasco.

The essays in this pioneering history of African Americans in Pittsburgh were written before World War II and the economic recovery that followed the Great Depression; before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and desegregation; before the destruction of a black cultural locus in the lower Hill District. The book, therefore, not only tells the history of African Americans in Pittsburgh from colonial times to the 1930s, but also exquisitely captures the perspective of the period in which was created.

Presented thematically, chapters cover such topics as the abolitionist and civil rights movements; the significance of the wage worker in an industrial city; the development of the church, of education, and the press; and the influential arts and folkways of the Pittsburgh community. The book closes with a stirring collection of personal interviews in which citizens speak frankly about their own experiences. These narratives express intense frustration, but also hope, pride, and a deep conviction to bring about change. In the words of one woman from the Hill District, "Opportunity should be free just as the air; it's free; it's free to breathe for all of us. . . . The remedy is to tell people the truth. . . . Tell us the truth about everything. Tell us the whole truth."

                                        Book Description

This important new book addresses the prospects for reconciling economic competitiveness with sustainable development. It shows that we cannot simply assume that changes in public attitudes, business policies and government regulation will guarantee the conditions for long-term ecological, social and economic sustainability.

On the basis of new original case studies, the authors consider corporate environmental strategies, technological change and sustainability, and sustainable development as a social partnership between firms, citizens and government. They suggest that competitiveness must be considered as a dynamic process requiring proactive and reactive adjustments by business and government institutions all working towards sustainability.

Sustainability and Firms combines intellectual rigor with accessibility to communicate fundamental ideas to help policy decision makers, enterprise managers, environmental scientists and economists grapple effectively with the problems of competitiveness, technological change, strategies of firms, governance and sustainable development.
