Written by the developers of Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Programmer's Guide gives you a solid overall grounding in the language and the major tasks you will undertake in the development environment.

The book is divided into two parts and a series of appendices. The first part introduces the basic concepts of the Visual Basic environment and explains the form- and event-driven paradigm. Five chapters later, the authors explain forms, controls, and projects and give a quick primer on the unique structure of the Visual Basic language, its data types, and its use of functions, procedures, and code modules.

The second part, "What You Can Do with Visual Basic," makes up the majority of the book. A chapter on user-interface creation illustrates how to create single and multiple-document interfaces and how to implement dialogs and toolbars, and presents some general user-interface tips. Following chapters cover each of the Visual Basic custom controls, present advanced project-compilation concepts, and introduce the object-oriented features of Visual Basic.

The guide then presents ActiveX components, event and error handling, text and graphics manipulation, performance optimization, and other crucial topics. Four appendices spell out Visual Basic's limits, coding conventions, compiler options, and how to add help to your programs. No matter what your skill level, this programmer's guide will become a frequently visited companion. --Stephen Plain

5 out of 5 stars The only VB6 book I need........2003-06-29

For 90% of the VB questions that I have I can find the answer in this book. It is a great programmers reference. Of course it is just about the Visual Basic language itself and really doesn't delve to far into using VB to program databases or anything like that. Just a good solid reference to the basics of the core language itself.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies.......2003-02-01

If your a newbie to Visual Basic do not buy this book! This book in geared towards the intermediate to advanced programmer I have been using VB for several years and take it from me, don't buy it. Even for the intermediate programmers this book makes numerous references to the Library Reference, If your serious on vb then get it too otherwise don't bother, try a website.

4 out of 5 stars Good step-by-step book.......2002-12-12

This is a good step-by-step book for learning Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition. There are some minor mistakes in this book but overall it is a very good book. If you follow along, you should not have a lot of problems. Please note, this book is geared toward the "Professional Edition", you will need to have a strong understanding of the features of "Enterprise Edition" in order to pass the certification exams. Subjects such as the Visual Component Manager, Visual SourceSafe, MTS/COM+ are not covered or bearly covered. You will need other books in order to get a more thorough knowledge of these subjects. Visual Basic Professional Edition and/or Visual Studio Professional Edition are excellent for SOHO (Small office, home office). I have Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition installed on my home PC and I use this book to solve some of the issues that arrises.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book, but Not Complete.......2001-06-20

I started doing VB back on Win 3.1 and had lost touch with it after severals years. I had to begin to relearn the new improved versions of VB now for a summer job i had received. I picked up this book, and for the most part the information was very good. However the main problem i have with this book, is that if you are ever looking for more indepth information into it, the book refers you to "the Language Reference" or one of the other reference library books. I understand that you cannot have all the info in this book, but being refered to another MS book just bugged me. I mean the knowledge being online, they could have given the exact URL to find the info, instead of trying to get you to buy a 70dollar reference manual.

THe information in this book is more of an overview of all the different components, and have helped me out of a lot of binds over the time. This book is not for someone new to VB or to programming in general, there are plenty of books and online refs for those.

I have since bought the reference library, and without that as an accompanment to this book, it would have been very difficult to get most of the knowledge I have needed for my programs.

If you are looking for a good standalone VB book, look elsewhere, if you are looking for a good reference book for a outside assistance, this could be your answer.

1 out of 5 stars VB 6.0 Programmers Guide not for programmers.......2001-03-19

If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money.

                      Book Description

The heartwarming saga of Imo Lavender and her spirited family continues in a third installment of the beloved Homegrown series.

Life is moving on for Imogene Lavender, and reluctantly she leaves her farm in rural Georgia to follow her new husband, Reverend Peddigrew, into town to live in the parsonage. Her struggle to adjust is not what she expects when she begins feeling the all-too-perfect presence of the Reverend's late wife. The move also leaves Imo's niece Loutishie resentful and stretching her faith to find a way back to her beloved farm. Imo's daughter, Jeanette -- a beautician at the Kuntry Kut 'n' Kurl married to a reverend of her own -- is so afraid of becoming a "church lady" that she secretly enters an erotic bull-riding contest. But a devastating event forces Jeanette to see that beauty is not just skin deep, and when Imo's neighbors suffer a great tragedy, she learns what it really means to be a reverend's wife by helping to restore their faith.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Delightful, Evocative Meander Through Small-Town Georgia.......2007-03-30

Julie Cannon, aka Georgia's Tomato Diva, serves up a third helping of her successful "Homegrown" series, which features the lovable Imo, tomato-gardener extraordinaire; wild-thing turned born-again (or is she?) Jeannette; and the prosaic Loutishie, who must knit these two new pastors' wives back together when they start to lose it.

A delightful, evocative meander through small-town Georgia - and a realistic close-up of what's it's like to step into the all-too-perfect shoes of the church lady.

5 out of 5 stars Endearing and Inspiring.......2006-10-09

This book is a page turner that will have you laughing and crying. It's also inspiring because it reminds you of a simpler life where investing time in caring for people and nature are worth more than selfish ambitions.

5 out of 5 stars Another fabulous book! A great family saga for sure-A++.......2006-08-19

In this third book by Julie Cannon, it picks up now with Imogene, the main character who is now married to Rev. Lemuel, after promising his late wife, her best friend Martha, that she would do so. The chemistry though, isn't really right, and it seems that no matter what Imo does, she just can't get into what a preacher's wife is 'supposed' to do. Her friend Wanda, at the Kut n' Kurl is having a real snit about Imo taking Martha's place in the minister's life, so she refuses to give her the famous recipe for Jam Cake, as she feels Imo shouldn't have to be part of the family.

Loutishie, Imo's niece is now a senior in high school. She doesn't really care for the Rev. Lemuel very much, and when he wants to sell the precious farmhouse, and move into the parsonage, Loutishie is beyond anger with him, as the farmhouse is her beloved land with the garden she and Imo share together.Lou absolutely refuses to leave there, and once she hears of this news, she goes and remains at the farmhouse, refusing to come back to the parsonage and discuss anything with the Reverend.

And Jeanette, Imo's other girl is married and settled down with the minister Montgomery. As time goes along though, she has an obvious serious medical problem as she is experiencing many bad fainting spells. She refuses to go the doctor until her problem escalates, and she becomes deathly ill finally.

Reverend Lemuel is also having a problem driving, and having very close calls behind the wheel. After many near-tragic accidents, poor Imo has to drive him around all over the place and on visitations, etc., until she is worn to a frazzle.

A tragedy happens during the last part of the book with one of Imo's dearest friends, Lillian. Imo tries to help her out of a very grave depression along with everything else.

5 out of 5 stars Those Pearly Gates is divine!.......2005-10-02

If you enjoy Jan Karon's Mitford Series, you'll love Julie Cannon's Homegrown Series! (Truelove and Homegrown Tomatoes, 'Mater Biscuit, and newly released Those Pearly Gates). The three-book anthology is brimming with the succinct elements that give southern writing its rich texture and charm: sumptuous food, a strong sense of place, ties to the local parsonage, an eccentric character (or two!), and gardening ~ the southern alternative to therapy. Those Pearly Gates folllows Imogene and new husand the Reverend Lemuel Peddigrew, along with daughter Loutishie and niece Jeanette, down life's rocky paths, but does so with clarity, poignancy and purpose. Ms. Cannon's prose is exquisite. Her words nearly dance off the page. The story is universal, as old as time, the viewpoint fresh as morning. Settle in for the third installment in The Homegrown Series by this gifted word-painter. You'll quickly get lost in this heartwarming and humuorous story that'll have you finding your way home.

                      Book Description

A powerful account of the life of Tamerlane the Great (1336-1405), the last great Mongol conqueror of Central Asia, ruler of a vast empire, and one of history's most brutal tyrants

Tamerlane, aka Temur-the Mongol successor to Genghis Khan-ranks with Alexander the Great as one of the world's great conquerors, yet the details of his life are scarcely known in the West. Born in obscurity and poverty, he rose to become a fierce tribal leader, and with that his dominion and power grew with astonishing speed. He blazed through Asia, razing cities to the ground. He tortured conquered inhabitants without mercy, sometimes ordering them buried alive, at other times decapitating them. Over the ruins of conquered Baghdad, Tamerlane had his soldiers erect a pyramid of 90,000 enemy heads. As he and his armies swept through Central Asia, sacking, and then rebuilding cities, Tamerlane gradually imposed an iron rule and a refined culture over a vast territory-from the steppes of Asia to the Syrian coastline.

Justin Marozzi traveled in the footsteps of this fearsome emperor of Samarkand (modern-day Uzbekistan) to write this book, which is part history, part travelogue. He carefully follows the path of this infamous and enigmatic conqueror, recounting the history and the story of this cruel, cultivated, and indomitable warrior.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag, Lots of great stuff, some glitter.......2007-10-02

Marozzi has done a lot of work and there is a lot of great stuff in here. At times he seems to get carried away and feel that he was writing a Hollywood script, it makes the book a cross between a novel and a work of history. But don't get me wrong, he seems to know his subject well. The title is misleading as was the man himself. Tamur used Islam as and when it served his purpose and so implying that he was enforcing Islam is wrong. Tamur killed Sunni's and Shi'as just as happily as he killed people of other faith. Marozzi's treatment of Tamur Lung (the right way of saying the name) reminds me of Mel Gibson's cheap tricks with Christ, throw in a lot of gore and people will buy it to be shocked. Both seem to ignore the context of time. Then every now and then Marozzi throws in a few pages of utmost brilliance like when he boldly states: "Europe of that time was backwater" I doubt how many historians missed that part. He is a great story teller and reads like James Mitchner, just not as gripping. His talks about his travels seem a bit weak and not very interesting. But having said that, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, Tartars, wars in Islamic world and I am sure I will read this book again someday. His map in the beginning is great, but then he chooses to throw some black and white pictures instead of more maps.

                      3 out of 5 stars It's a bird! It's a plane!.......2007-06-05

In principle the idea to make a mix of a travel book with a history book does not sound so bad - but it does not quite work in this case. The author's travels have little historical relevance, are wordy, and in most (not all) cases simply detract. I ended up just skipping them. The historical part itself is somewhat better, but is badly in the need of editing. The author apparently can't decide whether to give a chronological narrative, and runs back and forth in time with confusing consequences. The citations from contemporary sources are far too long, especially ones from the Spanish Ambassador, whose story of travel to meet Temur is told in similar words at least three times throughout the book. I fully agree with a previous reviewer about too many pages (the whole chapter, actually) being devoted to analysis of the Marlowe play - with no useful information, whatsoever. I would advise to skip the whole chapter, but, confusingly, quite a few pages in the middle and the end of the chapter "forget" about Marlowe and just address Temur himself. Adding to a feel of unfinishness are the maps: they are never referred to in the text, are somewhat redundant, and randomly distributed throughout the book.
On a historical level, although the author, to his credit, does not diminish the atrocities caused by this monster, still, the author clearly finds Temur a more positive figure than the book itself portrays, emphasizing his building legacy and patronage of arts. I am sure this came as a great relief to hundreds of thousands slaughtered by Temur's orders in most cruel manner, in cold blood.
Still, overall, much of this book reads relatively well, and it's only one currently available. Maybe the author will tweak the next edition to make it better......

                      5 out of 5 stars Heady reading.......2006-11-16

It might be inappropriate to say I >enjoyed < a book about a protagonist who decorated the scenes of his victories with pyramids of skulls. However, the book is absorbing. The author writes well, with skill, knowledge, and at times quiet humor. His comments on conditions in Temur's lands today were very interesting, connecting the past to the present.

I probably had better than average knowledge of Temur, knew about his coffin lid, and so forth, but my knowledge was, at best sketchy. Didn't Handel have a hand in writing an opera about him? I had never figured out what Mongols were doing ruling India. This book filled in vivid details about this fascinating, but almost forgotten, page of history.

Fortunately, my decision to buy the book was not influenced by the reviewer who complains about Marozzi's use of Marlowe's play. Actually, the play figures very briefly in the book. It provides an intriguing contrast of the perception or dramatization of Temur and the historical facts. For that matter, I wish he had commented on Handel's opera, too.

Readers are sure to ... well, I shouldn't say enjoy it, but you will want to read this book.

                      2 out of 5 stars Overly dramatic.......2006-07-20

Marozzi keeps using phrases such as gold and precious stones, and uses repetitive dramatic language to describe every battle. The book is interesting in spite of the unsophisticated writing.

5 out of 5 stars A spirited, riveting account blends ancient and modern worlds.......2006-05-23

Tamerlane was the lost nomadic warlord and his achievements ranks him with Alexander the Great in power and domination - yet his name is little known today. That's why TAMERLANE: SWORD OF ISLAM, CONQUREROR OF THE WORLD is so important: it tells of a fierce tribal leader who tortured and killed without mercy, whose soldiers erected a pyramid of some 90K enemy heads, and whose iron rule ran from Asia to Syria. Journalist Justin Marozzi has traveled throughout the Muslim world gathering information for this history/travelogue: TAMERLANE comes packed not only with source material information but with the first-person experiences of the author's travels in search of it. A spirited, riveting account blends ancient and modern worlds.

Tamerlane (1336-1405)--the tartar successor to Genghis Khan--ranks with Alexander the Great as one of the world's greatest conquerors. His armies were ferocious, feared throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe. They blazed through Asia like a firestorm, razing cities, torturing captives, and massacring enemies. Anyone who dared defy Tamerlane was likely decapitated, and towers of bloody heads soon became chilling monuments to his power throughout Central Asia. By the end of his life, Tamerlane had imposed his iron rule, as well as a refined culture, over a vast territory--from Syria to India, from Siberia to the Mediterranean. Justin Marozzi traveled in the footsteps of this infamous and enigmatic emperor of Samarkand (in modern Uzbekistan) to tell the story of this cruel, cultivated, and powerful warrior.
