Hello:

I read Multiprotocol Routing for SAN's (and I've read many SAN and opensystems books in my career as an OpenSystems engineer) and I must tell you that this one is so well written. From text copy, to footnotes, to cross references within the book, to its glossary, it just flows so well, with a wealth of tangible information. There is so much you can both learn and/or recall just by reading it because it was put together so thoughtfully. As its name suggests, it is a book tackling the issues and opportunities associated with SAN routing; but, in doing so, it also reviews and compares competing and complementary technologies, which leads to as thorough a treatment of the subject matter as is possible in a book of this size. Don't be put off by its highlighting of the Brocade AP7420 router during the discussion because the book, as a whole, transcends that with its overall knowledge; and, as a matter of fact, referring to that model router takes the book from theoretical to tangible.

Finally, the digital PDF edition (I have both) is easy on the eyes because of the books dimensions. You can easily read two pages side to side.

THE PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR is a constructive proposal to elevate the financial service provider (FSP, De Goey's umbrella term) to a professional standard. If a profession is to include by example physicians, dentists, and attorneys, then it assumes the financial advisor as professional will have attained a rigorous level of relevant academic competence and selfless commitment to the public. De Goey reminds us of H.L. Mencken's definition of a professional as one who "cannot be bought".

Here is the crux of the matter. FSPs are paid in four ways: 1)hourly fees 2) as a percentage of client assets managed 3) salary or 4) commission. While the industry is slowly changing its commission driven model, the majority of FSPs earn their income in this way - essentially a bounty for selling financial products. Importantly, some products compensate FSPs more than others. It is this reliance on commission loaded products that compromises the impartiality of the FSP. Doctors don't profit from the direct sale of drugs. Attorneys don't sell divorce settlements. True professionals sell advice not products. An "unbundling" of commissions from investments that are recommended by the FSP would eliminate the inherent bias of recommending one over another. It would also enable FSPs to focus on the critical matter of asset allocation rather than product selection.

De Goey's second issue relates to how the FSP is educated. Most FSPs are on their own with respect to continuing their education once they are licensed to sell securities. The industry's version of continuing education is generally product driven, because selling products generates commissions. The fruits of academic research, often at odds with Wall Street wisdom, are just as often ignored. Indeed, The Efficient Market Hypothesis, The Capital Asset Pricing Model, and Modern Portfolio Theory - pillars of modern financial theory - may get only passing consideration from FSPs conditioned to sell product.

De Goey's solution to all this is uncompromising. Mandate reform. Eliminate embedded commissions. Establish the CFP designation (Certified Financial Planner) as the professional standard of competence and set a deadline for certification. At the same time educate and persuade FSPs to begin transitioning their business to a fee-based model.

This reader favors another approach. Generate grants from the financial services industry for the development of a college level academic curriculum leading to an acceptable certification. This new standard may or may not be the CFP designation. Universities could be encouraged that their newly minted graduates might find employment. Industry regulators, notably the NASD in the U.S., have a mission to promote a higher standard of excellence. Investment firms would have an interest in replenishing their ranks with newly accredited consultants. Over time accreditation would become a de facto requirement for hire.

For all De Goey's criticisms, there is a very positive message here. Studies consistently show that FSPs add value to their client's efforts. They should not be embarrassed to be paid for their advice. Here is a book for investment advisors that is not about selling but about the structure of their industry and why it must change. All the more interesting that it has been written by a Canadian. Some specifics pertaining to investment companies, tax laws, and industry regulations will be unfamiliar to U.S. readers, but the differences are inconsequential for the larger issues that are met head-on.

This book is better than ANY of the great trashy historical romances I have EVER read. I love to cook; I love to eat; I love my husband. This book made a great week for all three. It was an inspiration for me to perfect a couple of things, cooking and uhmmmm. If you want to get INSPIRED too, then read this book!! I'd pair it with a couple of cooking books, like Cooking in the Nude: the one for newlyweds, Booty Food, Inter-courses, or something like that. Enjoy a great book!

Gastronomic delights.......2006-07-16

For any kind of foodie or to anyone who delights in Italian cuisine, this book is a must. Tommaso is a handsome, very Italian looking young man who attracts girls like flies to honey, but who especially appreciates the charms of blonde, non-Italian females. He works as a waiter at one of Rome's most up market restuarants and shares an apartment with his old friend, Bruno, a rather plain looking man who happens to be a brilliant and inspired chef. Laura is an American art history student, in Rome on a scholarship, determined to follow the advice of her Italian girlfriend to find herself a boyfriend who is a chef, as they're supposed to be "good with their hands". When Laura and Tommaso meet, he introduces himself as a chef and a Cyrano de Bergerac situation occurs with Bruno cooking incredibly wonderful, sensual meals for Laura, for Tommaso to pass off as his own work. It's an engagingly light read, full of descriptions of mouth watering Italian dishes, overlaid with love and laughter, perhaps not for those readers who aren't at all interested in enjoying good food...and there are such people...but for those who enjoy the use of all of their senses, a sheer delight!

This is a very sensual book, bringing to life the smells, sights and taste of Italy, while being held together and given flow by a romantic love story that is both touching and unusual.

My best friend, Joyce, bought me a copy of this book and sent it to me to read. Her note said she couldn't stop thinking about me and my love of cooking, especially Italian food. We are both of Italian decent & grew up together in a mostly Italian neighborhoood as children; and still friends today. This book hit home. It was so entertaining, I couldn't wait to get home from work at night just to read more. Loved the little Italian phrases throughout ... I continuously laughed. Okay, so I was on a tight budget and needed a new book...found this in hardcover at the local superstore on the bargain table...what a find! Frances Norris tells a wonderful story of a character coming to grips with the loss of her family, both recently and in the past. The characters are very believable and Norris gives a true feeling of setting without drowning the reader in description. I read this quickly, but still felt satisfied. Very enjoyable read.

Who Can Resist?.......2005-05-30

Love and food are two of my favorite subjects, so how could I resist this book? I was not disappointed. The loss element keeps the story subtantive so that its not just another piece of fluff. The book has hilarious characters (including an overbearing narcissist in an amoeba jumper), but the author treats all with compassion enough to make them full and true. The food styling scenes bring together Hollywood fakery with a delicious disgustingness (photographing motor oil poured on macshed potatoes to resemble a sundae). You can't help cheering on narrator Julia as she navigates the crazies and searches out her soul in a soul-less city. Buy this book right away and enjoy!

The only reason that I got this book was because the author went to my high school - so I have to admit that my expectations were not that high. But I really, really enjoyed this book, for the reasons stated so eloquently by other reviewers. It was gripping though sad.

I loved Julia's story. She finds her inner spark by overcoming her pain, loss, and depression and finding love and forgiveness in unusual ways. The characters are well portrayed and do not lack depth, even the obviously obnoxious figures are seen with irony and compassion at the same time. Highly recommended.

Although it was originally published in 1990, this book was the most relevant I read during my tour of Iraq. I found many direct comparisons between the concepts mentioned by Mr. O'neil and the operations of the Iraqi insurgency. If you are interested in learning the inner workings of insurgency, or especially if you are delpoying to Iraq (in an MI capacity), you need to read this book.

Of interest to operators and students of Low Intensity Conflict & Law Enforcement........2005-10-26

Since the conclusion of the cold war, insurgency and terrorism have become the primary means for the disenfranchised to demonstrate their global discontent. During the same time, however, the defense and intelligence communities have staunchly resisted adapting to new threats and recognizing the new players on the international stage.

Simply stated ..."Insurgency may be defined as a struggle between a nonruling group and the ruling authorities in which the nonruling group consciously uses political resources (e.g., organizational expertise, propaganda, and demonstrations) and violence to destroy, reformulate, or sustain the basis of legitimacy of one or more aspects of politics." P. 13. "Terrorism is a form of warfare in which violence is directed primarily against noncombants (usually unarmed civilians), rather than operational military and police forces or economic assets (public or private)." P. 24.

Dr. O'Neill's Insurgency & Terrorism: Inside Modern Revolutionary Warfare is one of the best volumes I've found that focuses on cause and effect, along with viable solutions as a whole.

Academicians and practitioners alike had long given insurgency and terrorism little attention, instead stressing studies on the military/defense industry's technical structure - particularly ignoring the waning of human assets.

So the lack of a comprehensive and up-to-date counterinsurgency program is hardly surprising. "A key point to be addressed when evaluating a counterinsurgency program is how well the government knows its enemy." P. 126.

This book presents the most important, current challenges facing counterinsurgency and anti-terrorism policy, addressing key issues and analyzing solutions within the perspective of collective expectations and role definitions for both civil and military players. "Experience and the experts suggest that the most effective way to deal with internal terrorism and small-scale urban guerrilla attacks against soldiers and policemen is to emphasize police work, good intelligence, and judicial sanctions ...Police and intelligence agencies are also the main instruments for combating transnational terrorism. In today's world the problem of transnational terrorism places a premium on international police cooperation and intelligence sharing ...Numerous cases suggest that the centerpiece of successful counter-guerrilla campaigns are small-unit operations - that is, sustained and aggressive patrols and ambushes in guerrilla-infested zones." Pp. 128 - 130.

Excellent Synthesis.......2005-10-13

This author does an outstanding job of organizing, synthesizing and conveying the essence of insurgency and terrorism. The one drawback to this book is that you will need to have a specialized understanding of the art and science of war. If you are a novice, buy the book and continue to do your research and professional reading. This book will become invaluable to you later and you will be grateful that you have it. Side bar... of course you might not agree with everything that this author says; thats ok, look past that and focus on the content of what he is trying to convey.
Of particular note, What I like about this book is that it is organized and fits nicely with the notion that there are "many" centers of gravity. for those that believe, like myself, that clausewitz had more than just a narrow defintion of how the principles of war were tied to more than just the political, then this book will become an excellent source reference for your continuing professional development as you explore the nuances and variables of the many types of strategies. All in all, this book is worth the effort.

Excellent framework for analysis.......2005-04-21

This is an excellent framework for analysis, but you will need specialist information which is both current and validated before you can do much more than generalize in any given situation. Still, even this can be quite useful.
I came across this book while reading "Peace Operations in an Insurgency Environment", a paper written by Major Grootendorst for the CSC in 1997. In this paper he effectively uses the marketing management model of Kotler to combine the Mackinlay and Chapra theory of peace operations with O'Neill's insurgency model. Very nicely done. (I like Kotler - he seems to view business as war by other means!)
O'Neill's treatment is necessarily very narrow. Except in passing, his scope does not include pre-insurgency nor post-insurgency. I don't find this a deficiency with his work, but I do find it a deficiency with our thinking about insurgency. A common agreement among participants at the recent Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration course sponsored by the Norwegian Defense Force in Oslo is that we need to move beyond the central focus on insurgency. Necessary as it is to "calm the waters", current process does not seem to solve the underlying structural problems which then rise to a boil every decade or so -- and in addition the initial societal disturbance creates generational shockwaves that take decades of sincere and costly efforts to reduce to a manageable level. While O'Neill's is the close examination of a particular facet of a problem, we cannot afford to be so parochial.
I strongly recommend this book. Much of what we have seen come to pass in Iraq was largely predictable, at least in broad brush strokes, based on competent consideration of his model. (I actually read the book in early 2002 and have reviewed it again just this month.) Just keep in mind the broader picture -- think outside the box. We seem to be doing the same things over and over again, only harder and faster; and then seem surprised when we get the same results -- only quicker. A clear prerequisite is being able to empathize (as opposed to sympathize) with the opponent, no matter how we feel about his actions.

Excellent piece of work........2003-06-06

In "Insurgency and Terrorism", Bard O'Neill has provided his audience (whether a fighting man or a student) with a framework through which to analyse insurgencies, past, present and future. O'Neill states that he believes that insurgencies are likely to remain a key level of conflict in the future. I agree with him. This is an important area and one which receives all too little attention, especially, in my experience, among the armed forces of the United States. Hopefully Dr O'Neill will redress the balance a little.

The book is split into 9 sections;

- Insurgency in the Contemporary World
- The Nature of Insurgency
- Insurgent Strategies
- The Environment
- Popular Support
- Organisation and Unity
- External Support
- Government Response
- Conclusions

In each case, O'Neill splits the areas up into smaller sub-sections for easy reference. He deals with different types of insurgent groups, different ways insurgents operate, the effects of terrain and outside support, the coverage is fairly comprehensive. He also, usefully, uses historical examples to illustrate his points.

As O'Neill himself points out, no framework for analysis can be infallible or perfect, but this is a pretty good start, whether you are in a counter-insurgency situation or in a seminar room. Good stuff. It should, of course, be supplemented with further reading (a bibliography would have been useful) but all in all this is an excellent piece of work in a field that has been somewhat neglected in recent times (it isn't fashionable in America at the best of times and many of the classic texts are now out of print).

A good piece of follow-up reading to this book (especially for a student) would be Ian Beckett's "Modern Insurgencies and Counter-Insurgencies".

I used to take friends for granted, but now after moving a number of times, I'm more aware of the fragility of friendships. Friends take effort and nurturing and may not last a lifetime. As your life changes, so will your selection of friends. Some will stay with you over the years even when many miles separate you.
This book helps you determine when a friendship isn't working for you any longer. Sometimes it is your needs that have changed and sometimes it is your friend's needs. Some people were never your real friend from the start but it takes awhile to recognize their hidden agenda and how their kind of friendship is hurting you.

I thought that this book was a very interesting read. How many of us actually take the time to breakdown the different types of friendships we have, how we incorporate them in our lives and how they affect our world. Very insightful and recommended.

This book was a excellent tool in helping me understand who my friends and who are not.I have been struggling with know who is real, why people act the way they do. I wanted to know the dynamics of women friendships. I must say all my questions were answered!!!

I found this book to be extremely definitive. Friends is such a blanket statement and this book brings clarity to the word. If you ever wondered where your 'friends' fit in your life this is the book to have. Not only does it give you guidelines for recognizing friends, it also sheds light on your own behavior. The book is peppered with personal accounts of friendships and even has some valuable information on sibling rivalry and other familial ties. Definitely a book to purchase because it will serve as an excellent reference guide.

Good Description of Bad Friendships, But No "Tools".......2000-07-06

I agree with the first customer review -there are many, many more "toxic friends" than people think. With that said, I thought the book is a fine overview of an important subject. However, the author should have given more discussion and suggestions on how to end a toxic friendship. I have had to do this recently, and it is very emotionally difficult. But I have used tools that I have learned over the years such as: writing "anger letters" to the person, which you never send; writing "farewell letters" to the person, also which you may choose to never send. I have learned to cry about the loss, and let go. Very importantly, I try, in every single case, to learn the important lesson: what went wrong, and how should I have done things differently. Unfortunately, the author spends very little to no time on these topics.
