      Book Description

              Book Description

Dutch elm disease is a significant problem in forestry and horticulture which has proven remarkably difficult to ameliorate. Since the introduction of the Dutch elm disease pathogen to North America, the disease has devastated the elm population of this continent and has been the subject of intensive research. This book summarizes the range of approaches that have been taken to address the disease, and emphasizes the significant progress over the past decade in applying methods from cell and molecular biology. Dutch Elm Disease: Cellular and Molecular Approaches will be of interest to scientists in plant pathology, horticulture, forestry, biological control, and plant breeding.

This collection of essays by a leading philosopher of science defends integrative pluralism as the best description for today's complexity of scientific inquiry. The tendency of some scientists to reduce all theories to a few fundamental laws of the most basic particles that populate our universe is not appropriate for the biological sciences, which study multi-component, multi-level, evolved complex systems. This book will be of interest to students and professionals in the philosophy of science.

This fine collection of essays by a leading philosopher of science presents a defence of integrative pluralism as the best description for the complexity of scientific inquiry today. The tendency of some scientists to unify science by reducing all theories to a few fundamental laws of the most basic particles that populate our universe is ill-suited to the biological sciences, which study multi-component, multi-level, evolved complex systems. This integrative pluralism is the most efficient way to understand the different and complex processes - historical and interactive - that generate biological phenomena. This book will be of interest to students and professionals in the philosophy of science.

                  Book Description

A Continent Revealed presents the findings of the European Geotraverse (EGT)--a unique study of the tectonic evolution of the continent of Europe and the first comprehensive cross section of the continental lithosphere. The project produced maps and geologic profiles, along a 250 kilometer wide swath stretching 4600 kilometers from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, which form a three dimensional picture of the structure, properties, and composition of the continental lithosphere of Europe in an atlas format. Many of the data that comprise the maps are also presented on an compact disc (ROM). The discussion volume, the maps, and a booklet containing gravity, electric, and magnetic field data constitute the complete boxed set. The paperback discussion volume is also available separately.

                  Book Description

Elements of Solid State Physics Second Edition M. N. Rudden and J. Wilson University of Northumbria at Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK This textbook provides a basic introduction to the principles of solid state physics and semiconductor devices and will prove essential for first and second year students of physics, materials science and electrical/electronic engineering courses. It assumes no prior knowledge of quantum or statistical mechanics and relies on simple models to illustrate the physical principles. However, the opportunity has been taken in this edition to extend the concept of energy bands to a consideration of E—k curves, and certain new material has been added, notably relating to superconductivity and optoelectronic devices, including lasers, following significant developments in these areas. Elements of Solid State Physics, Second Edition, presents the student with an essentially non-mathematical approach to the subject. Arranged in a logical sequence with many clear illustrations, each chapter has a number of worked examples and discussion points, as well as questions and answers. Readers of this fully revised and updated edition will receive a thorough grounding in the principles of solid state physics and should have sufficient knowledge about modern electronic devices to proceed to more advanced texts in this area. Main Contents: Some Aspects of Modern Physics; Structure of Crystalline Solids; Theories of Conduction and Magnetism; Energy Bands in Solids; Quantum Theory of Conduction; Semiconductor Devices.

I'm a graduate student majoring in solid state physics in south korea. Although I bought this book to study solid state physics, materials about solid state physics are poor for me to understand the basic concept of solid state physics. This is good for undergraduate students of semiconductor beginner but poor for students to study solid state physics. This book is dealt with quantum theory and energy bands in the point of view to beginner. This book does not cover with many mathematical expressions. This book is good for you to read without stress. if you study with background about the semiconductor, then you will increase your knowledge related to the semiconductor.

The stories in Remote Feed, David Gilbert's debut collection, are not for the faint of heart. A Hollywood producer finds himself with a broken finger after a stunningly acrobatic sex accident; a man volunteers to read to a blind woman, then amuses himself by moving around her furniture; a philandering husband on a drinking binge vomits through his snorkel and is pleased to discover that he has attracted a school of brightly colored fish. The title story follows a CNN news team, interspersing some heavy drinking in a Galapagos bar with the crew's final days in Sarajevo, where the reporter has the bad taste to die of an aneurysm rather than being photogenically shot. These are not nice people, to say the least--the producer compares failed movies to Nazi death camps--but they do have the redeeming virtue of being very funny indeed. Gilbert's scathing comic vision has been compared to Bellow and Roth, but it's equally reminiscent of that master of the modern grotesque, Flannery O'Connor. As in O'Connor's fiction, the wit burns away like a caustic at everything inessential in these characters' lives, exposing what's left over--fear, paranoia, emptiness, disgust--to the pitiless light of day. Here, though, there's no equivalent for O'Connor's brand of Christian redemption, but rather a harsh Darwinian struggle for survival alone. In the collection's only stab at the solace of faith, a bored suburbanite at an alcohol-free party persuades himself to walk across hot coals by picturing a good stiff drink at the other end: "Maybe I was a holy man.... Maybe I could transform the elements and turn a hot-coal party into a pool party. So I imagined that I was in the deep end treading toward the shallow end, where a lounge chair floated, a gin and tonic nestled in the drink holder.... Before I began, I was finished."

                  Book Description

First published in 1998 and now available in a new paperback edition, Gilbert’s stories stretch from war-torn Bosnia to a college sorority house to kill-or-be-killed Hollywood. His bold prose and perceptive wit paint a devastating picture of normal life on the brink of desperation and paranoia and his insights into the minor tragedies, disappointments, and desires that shape us reflect a deep understanding of human nature and a genuine compassion for his characters.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2003-08-29

Picked this up because of the raves. Can't say I'm not a touch disappointed. I think the only reason this book is of note is that Gilbert seems to have eerily predicted the tragic death of David Bloom. There's a reporter in the titular story, he's in a war-torn country, reporting back to the people at home, and he dies of an aneurysm while there. There's even the detail that the reporter made his name during a natural disaster, which is what Bloom did.

Some of the writing is sharp, but a lot of it is almost cripplingly pretentious. Gilbert has the ability to light you afire with a spot-on observation or brilliant detail, but for the most part I think the bad outweighs the good. Which isn't to say we should completely count Gilbert out. My biggest problem was that the stories have slight, pat endings; it's almost like he's able to create these interesting characters but doesn't know what to do with them.

If you do decide to buy this book, I'd recommend skipping the third story, entitled "Anaconda Wrap." It is dreadfully bad and since it comes so soon, you might feel the need to throw the book away entirely. But don't. Things get better.

"Remote Feed" is not what it was sold as, but I still think it's worth a read. It's one of those in-between books--in between good and bad, and I'd call it middle-of-the-road proficient.

                  5 out of 5 stars A very good read!.......2002-10-24

I didn't write this book, although my name is David Gilbert. A friend bought me this book as a gag, and I put it prominently on my shelf as a conversation piece. ("Hey check out this book I wrote - yuk yuk.") Finally, after a year of the book letting the book gather dust, I took it down one rainy weekend and started reading.

I couldn't put it down! I can't believe that I let this book go for so long unread. These short stories aren't your typical stories with a generic beginning, middle and end - at least, not the kind we're used to. They are more like snapshots of people's lives. The characters in these stories aren't good people, nor are they completely bad people - they are just people, going through life like all of us are. And each of them have a distinctly different voice and way of looking at the world. You can find a bit of yourself in all of these characters, and that's what makes "Remote Feed" so compelling. I really wish I could claim credit for this book, instead of just the author's name.

                  4 out of 5 stars So what's next?.......2001-07-14

I liked all of the stories in David Gilbert's collection REMOTE FEED. I had bought this book on whim (it was on sale) not knowing what to expect, and I quickly devoured the book like I would a delicious chocolate chip cookie. The stories are smartly crafted and introspective, but not so introspective as to diminish the irony and often subtle humor of the stories. Particular highlights of the collection: "Cool Moss," "Remote Feed," "Graffiti," and "Still in Motion." I liked "Girl with Large Foot Jumping Rope" the best (the little boy reminded me of myself at that age). I think what makes this a great collection is that readers will have an easy time empathizing with Gilbert's characters--he writes in the different voices effortlessly. I anxiously await his next installment.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely stories, but hilarious?.......2001-02-28

I've had a lovely time reading these brooding stories. They certainly do their best to get "under the skin" of normal human situations, and most of them succeed admirably. David Gilbert has a rmarkable ear for dialogue, and he is able to paint "word pictures" which place us at the scene. His greatest achievement, in my opinion, is the ambiguity he manages to bring to such minutely-detailed places and situations. You are welcome to find any means of identification you can with his characters, and that, in my book, is great writing. But this is certainly not a hilarious book. Eveb if you sometimes laugh out loud, I doubt comedy is the main concept here. These are sensitive thoughts about the human condition, forays into chartered territory which still seems new (because of the author's talent). The hilarity other reviewers have pointed to was beyond me. however, great book and much potential. Read and wait for his future works.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good feed.......2000-09-07

I'm not surprised the hard cover edition of this is out of stock already. I've got it and it's really good.

                  Book Description

The Greek hoplite, the archetypal spear-armed warrior, is perhaps the most prevalent figure in our view of the 'Golden Age' of Ancient Greek civilisation. It was during this period that the state began to take greater responsibility for military organisation, and the arming and equipping of its citizens. From the victory at Marathon over Darius of Persia, through bitter inter-state warfare, to the rise of Philip of Macedonia and his son Alexander the Great, the hoplite soldier was in the front-line. This title narrates the life and experiences of the common Greek warrior, how he was recruited, trained and fought, and also looks in detail at how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time.

                  3 out of 5 stars Informative pamphlet.......2007-09-29

This book has good information, but is small. I would actual only consider it a pamphlet. Was expecting a little more but overall it is a good basic review of the Greek Hoplite with a few good illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars not nearly enough.......2007-04-02

If you could have only one book on Greek heavy infantry warfare, this would be it. It examines every facet of the warrior's life in war and peace, in combat and at ease, including gear, appearance, tactics, and personal experience in battle. Gave a very easy-to-read introduction to hoplite battle tactics, and the plates supplement the text well. The plate commentary is extremely detailed.

                  5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2006-07-10

Nicholas Sekunda has produced a masterpiece with "Greek Hoplite". He goes into excellent detail describing the training of hoplites, their weapons and equipment, their organization on campaign, and their battle tactics. He also makes excellent use of primary sources, quoting Xenophon, Plutarch, and even the Greek tragedian Aeschylus. The colour plates are also vividly drawn. I honestly cannot think of anything bad to say about this book.

5 out of 5 stars life of a Greek Hoplite warrior........2005-08-18

For anyone interested in ancient Greek military history this is a very informative book. The color plates are beautifully rendered and meticulously detailed. While this book is aimed at the younger reader, anyone with a thirst for knowledge on this subject will find it useful. The text is well written and enjoyable to all age levels.I find myself referencing it often to add realistic images to other works on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars The citizen soldier, his role in the classical Greek warfare.......2004-02-15

What I like about the books of Nick Sekunda is that he always try to make it easy for the common guy, the text is not too academic and not dry like other Osprey Writers, I like the way he put the source, when a author point out the sources he is given you a great help, I always like to start with a book which can guide to another great source of the same theme.

In this book we follow the life common Hoplite and experiences Training,Motivation and Preparation for the Hoplite Battle, the author provides full detail on what they wore, how they fought, and how their function fitted into the structure of Greek society.

We also can see the how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time, the development of the arms and armour from the pilo helmet to the Phrygian Helmet with 10 fabulous pieces of artwork from Adam Hook with a lot of black and white photos.

The book belongs on every classicist's shelf or fan of the Armours, this is what I enjoy the most of this books the description of the equipment wore by the typical soldier that dominated the classical Greek warfare, you would learn a lot,the volume presents the hoplite during the classical era from the Battle of Salamis to the death of Alexander the Great as clearly as can be imagined.

To learn more about the Warfare in the Classical Period or the Arms and Armours of the Hoplite you should star with the book of "Arms and Armor of the Greeks" by Anthony, M. Snodgrass another great writer is Peter Connolly check "Greece and Rome at War" many illustration and also "Warfare in the Classical World" by John Gibson Warry, "The Wars of the Ancient Greeks" by Victor Davis Hanson(Cassell History of Warfare series)"Thermopylae:The Battle for the West" by Ernle Bradford is an accessible narrative, also give a inside the Greek world and the warfare but if you want more of the Spartan,Hoplite and the Hot Gates check "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield is a novel but with a lot of detail, from the author of the book there are many titles always from Osprey Marathon 490 BC(Campaign 108)is very useful.

I teach math in a GED program for adults returning to school to finish their high school educations. I came across Where Do I Put... when I was looking for books to help students with paralyzing math anxiety. Of all the books I found on this subject in the library, this was by far the most user friendly and practical. Since then, I found a used copy that I have shared with many students and colleagues. One of them who calls this book "her Bible," gives it full credit for raising her GED math score by 25% and helping her to pass the test with flying colors. My only regret is that this book is out of print. I hope that the publisher (Avon Books) does something about that soon.
