Book Description
The goal of the volume is to provide some background on the various financial market segments of the Asian Pacific region. An understanding of institutional detail (size and scope) of the relevant markets affords a view that lends or detracts from the credibility of intermarket comparisons. An exposure and understanding of institutional detail supplies information that may bear on the statistical results of the empirical analysis. The vital roles played bycapital markets of pricing capital, issuing new shares, providing a liquidity-creating secondary feature, serving as a vehicle for asset transfer, and providing a linkage to international capital markets are as important to emerging markets as to developed countries.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of non-judicial dispute settlement in international financial transactions. Whereas arbitration and non-judicial dispute settlement mechanisms are of growing importance in international economic transactions, their present and future role in financial transactions is not yet fully explored. This timely publication aims to fill this gap in the literature and includes analyses of bank remedies, direct negotiation and mediation in financial and business conflicts, debt renegotiations, restructuring of syndicated loans, arbitration in project financing, and the roles of the ICC, NAFTA and OAS. Some of the expert papers focus in particular on the role of arbitration and dispute resolution in Latin America, Greater China and Russia. Non-Judicial Dispute Settlement in International Financial Transactions is based on the edited and revised papers of an international conference -- part of a global series of conferences held in 1999 on the `New International Financial Architecture' -- organised by the Law Centre of European and International Cooperation (R.I.Z., Cologne), the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (London), the Asian Institute of International Financial Law (Hong Kong), and the SMU Institute of International Banking and Finance (Dallas).

Book Description
This is the first book to investigate the structure, origin and evolution of carbonate mud-mounds. Mud-mounds are accumulations of biogenic carbonate sediment which are common in the geological record and are economically important as they host lead zinc mineralization and oil and gas. The book reviews, for the first time, the different mechanisms of mud-mound formation and examines in detail the major changes in mud-mound type and occurence through geological time. The major part of the book contains case studies of mud-mounds from the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The coverage is global and truly international, with 32 authors from 10 countries.
Book Description
Scientists in optics are increasingly confronted with problems that are of a random nature and that require a working knowledge of probability and statistics for their solution. This textbook develops these subjects within the context of optics using a problem-solving approach. All methods are explicitly derived and can be traced back to three simple axioms given at the outset. Students with some previous exposure to Fourier optics or linear theory will find the material particularly absorbing and easy to understand.
This third edition contains many new applications to optical and physical phenomena. This includes a method of estimating probability laws exactly, by regarding them as laws of physics to be determined using a new variational principle.
Book Description
In a world where plastic surgery is as popular as a pair of sexy Manolo Blahniks, suburban single mom Jessica Taylor is trying to make it past forty with nothing more than moisturizer and a swipe of mascara. Her glamorous best friend, TV producer Lucy Baldor, has a different idea of aging gracefully. “My body is a temple,” Lucy explains. “I just don’t want it to crumble like St. John the Divine.”
Jess and Lucy’s friendship has weathered the trials of marriage, the births of children, and the transition from itty-bitty bikinis to “Kindest Cut” one-piece suits. Now the women are discovering that midlife crises aren’t just for men—they’re equal-opportunity dilemmas.
To Jess’s dismay, Lucy announces that she’s taken a lover. A very famous lover. Her husband, Dan, is bound to find out (especially after a picture of the amorous duo appears on Page Six of the New York Post), but Lucy’s too wrapped up in the joys of expensive lingerie and romantic retreats to care. Jess finds herself in the midst of her own romantic predicament when, after ten years of silence, her sexy French ex-husband, Jacques, ends up back in her life—and in her bed.
Whether navigating bake sales, bicoastal affairs, or bagels-and-Botox parties, these wise and witty women know that their friendship will remain the one true thing they can count on. Well, that and a good push-up bra, of course. And their bond withstands everything—from an orgy in Willie Nelson’s trailer to a reality TV-show bachelor named Boulder.
Funny, brazen, and often poignant, this irresistible novel offers an unexpected and entertaining look at two women’s midlife adventures. From Thai massage to tantric sex, who would have thought forty could be so much fun?

Chapter One
champagne corks are popping and it¿s only five a.m.
¿Darling,¿ Lucy trills as I groggily cradle the phone between my ear and my goose down pillow. ¿I didn¿t wake you, did I?¿
Of course not. Why would I be asleep at this hour when I could be up repotting the azaleas?
¿Where are you?¿ I ask, fumbling for the Brite-Lite clock on the night table to confirm that, yes, it¿s still two hours until my alarm goes off. ¿Traveling?¿
¿L.A., darling,¿ Lucy says. ¿Working.¿
I knew that. When she¿s in New York, Lucy lives around the corner in a big Tudor house, but she regularly packs off to Burbank to produce glamorous TV shows. Being on the opposite coast causes her to sink into saying ¿darling¿ too much.
¿Everything okay?¿ I ask, awake enough now for my worry genes to have kicked in.
¿Absolutely, yes,¿ Lucy says as I hear what I swear is another champagne cork popping in the background. She bursts into giggles, covers the phone, and calls out, ¿Watch it, darling!¿
¿What¿s going on there?¿ I ask.
¿It¿s not what you think. We¿re rehearsing for a show and there¿s a scene with Dom Perignon. We¿re using real French champagne, even for the sound check.¿
French champagne. I sit up abruptly realizing that when the phone rang, I had been dreaming about Jacques, my very own Frenchman. We were lying naked, with our arms wrapped around each other at the edge of a warm, sunny beach. He was kissing me passionately as the waves lapped over us. Wait a minute. Didn¿t I see that same scene in some old movie? I put the phone down and notice the TV across the room is still flickering. I must have fallen asleep watching From Here to Eternity. Again.
¿Yoo-hoo, ¿ Lucy calls impatiently. ¿Earth to Jess. You still with me?¿
I clear my throat. ¿Jacques,¿ I say. ¿We were making love.¿
¿Jacques? Jacques is there?

average chick lit.......2007-08-03
i would say this is an average chick lit book- not terrible, not great- some things made me chuckle (usually the heroine's sarcastic thoughts) but mostly i found it a bit slow and boring- didn't like the rich friend - like another reviewer said, it made no sense why our heroine is friends with her- didn't like any of the characters too much at all actually- i read faithfully until about 60% in and then couldn't stand it anymore and plowed through the rest skipping over all the boring details just to find out what happened to everyone- took about an hour or so- i think i may be tiring of chick lit now- but then again, i just started "momzillas" and it actually looks really promissing so far! clever writer she seems- but if i find it dull too, then i think i have indeed passed this chick lit phase- by the way, i am a bit surprised by what many people have said - that chick lit is mostly for the 20's group- i don't think so- i am nearing 40 and i like reading about people my own age- and i don't know why 20 yr olds would want to read about 40 yr olds- just my thoughts- anyhow, try the same 2 authors' other book: "Mine-Are-Spectacular-A Novel" - it is much better- or a really great one is "24 karat kids" by judy goldstein- loved that one-
Cute Read.......2007-02-19
This book was a cute and easy read. It's not your typical chick lit as it focuses on fortysomethings but it's nice to read something other than "Oh my, so so wants me!". The characters, I think, are that real that you can kinda relate to them in a sense. Hope to see more books from these authors!
Light summer read........2006-08-06
I read the review of this book before I purchased it and I was a little concerned if I was going to be depressed (as I just turned 40) or was it going to make me laugh. This book definitely made me laugh and it was nice to relate to some of the story. Most of these types books are geared to women in their 20's and 30's and are written that way. I enjoyed that the book had more characters my age. Hope there will be more of these books.
Amusing, but predictable.......2006-07-06
I think the title says it all. It's a light summer beach read that doesn't require much concentration.
Delightful.......2006-05-07
With the current flood of Chick Lit books filling the bookstores today, THE BOTOX DIARIES has found a way of riding in on the wave and yet setting itself apart from the pack. Instead of dealing with the sometimes clich? obstacles of being a 20-something woman living in the city, searching for love and a career, we have two 40-something women searching for meaning in their lives while battling the issue of age. What THE BOTOX DIARIES shows is that even as women age, their problems of how to handle love, life, relationships and careers remains constant. These women are the SUV-driving, blond-bobbed, wrinkle-free Manhattan women who most females tend to hate. However, Janice Kaplan and Lynn Schnurnberger have created very likable and very real characters, and readers will actually find themselves sympathizing with the life struggles of these women.

"In a contest of violence against violence," the philosopher Hannah Arendt observed, "the superiority of the government has always been absolute." When confronted with nonviolent resistance on the part of the downtrodden, however, governments have often crumbled--witness the fall of South Africa's apartheid regime and the ousting of Slobodan Milosevic in Yugoslavia.
The worldwide spread of democracy in the 20th century, documentary writers Peter Ackerman and Jack DuVall maintain, "would not have come to pass without the power of ordinary people who defied oppressive rulers not by force of arms, but by nonviolent action." By way of example, they cite the collapse of the Argentine military regime following peaceful protests by the mothers of men and women who had been murdered by the secret police; the eventual undermining of the Polish Communist regime by the nonviolent Solidarity labor movement; the refusal of the Danish people to comply with the laws of their Nazi occupiers during World War II; and the exemplary work done in India (and, earlier, South Africa) by Mohandas Gandhi, who took pains to emphasize that nonviolence does not imply passivity.
Ackerman and DuVall's book, the companion volume to a PBS television series, will be of much interest to political activists of all stripes, as well as to students of contemporary history. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Ackerman, a respected authority on nonviolent conflict, and DuVall, a veteran writer, explore the ideas lying at the root of how popular movements have used non-violent action to overthrow dictators, frustrate military invaders, and secure human rights in country after country and decade after decade.

Instructive and inspiring.......2007-04-17
Vignettes of a host of nonviolent political conflicts: in Russia 1905, Ghandi in India, Poland and the USSR, U.S. civil rights, South Africa, El Salvador, Chile, Palestine, etc. Nicely written and easy to follow. Draws important lessons at the end for those interested in learning from the past. This is inspiring, useful and important stuff.

Deserves Six Stars.......2006-09-29
This is a very important book and deserves consideration for inclusion in ALL history education classes in America, if not the world. Of course, many powers-that-be would be adverse to this subversive idea, since it would in effect, instruct people on how to take control of their own lives out of the hands of malfeasant, greedy politicians and instead empower democracy through democracy, rather than the current American vogue of democracy at the point of a gun. The book describes several of the well-known non-violent movements as well as lesser known ones, such as the German women who embarrassed the Nazis into returning their arrested Jewish husbands from certain death. The associated documentary is also outstanding. A must-have for anyone who hopes the world can save itself from itself (and I'm not sure I'm in that category.)
Keep Struggling.......2005-04-01
Excellent! One of the most powerful books I have ever read. Explodes the left-wing myth that revolutions only occur through violence a la Che Guevara, cites many examples where non-violence protest has ultimately changed the executive power of states from the Phillipines to El Salvador, and won people civil rights. Includes Gandhi and also the Civil Rights movement in the USA in the 60s as case studies.
Icing on the cause.......2004-03-05
If your a social activists, and you sometimes feel that "progress" is a lost cause... READ THIS BOOK. If you are a political organizer, and it just doesn't seem worth it anymore... READ THIS BOOK. If you really believe in the power of Direct Action, but feel all used up and stale in your efforts... READ THIS BOOK. This is one of the few books available for people with leftisits, or humanist, causes that will make you smile and give you hope, and remind you that sometimes "the good fight" is a long one - but well worth it. It also takes one out of a self centered reality, and pays homage to those who have faught so hard before us. (and I am not talking about soldiers or fireman..)
Why did revenge dominate the 9-11 discussion in the US?.......2002-02-05
Why did revenge and vengeance dominate the 9-11 discussion by public officials and the media? Why do our public discourse and media images seem virtually bereft of the common sense that informs many other areas of life? This outstanding book could help fill the void. It consists of a dozen very well-written and well-documented case studies of the power of nonviolence in dealing with injustice on a national or international scale. And I mean the power of nonviolence like King and Gandhi lived it, not the stereotype of nonviolence as passivity or cowardice.
Good parents know revenge doesn't work with their children, good teachers know it doesn't work in the classroom, good citizens know it doesn't work in their community, and a growing proportion of the criminal justice world is embracing the vision of "restorative justice" as a much more functional grounding for most of their work. Even though the majority of people in the US know that revenge doesn't work, there is a lack of awareness of the power of nonviolence in the larger public arena, even though two thirds of the world's population has experienced nonviolent social change that was successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams in South Africa, Eastern Europe, the Philippines, Gandhi in India, the US civil rights movement, to name just a few case studies covered in this remarkable book.
As someone who has taught and worked in community centers in the highest crime areas of NYC and Oakland and directed conflict and peace studies programs for 80 public schools, a university, and several community and national organizations, I can affirm that people are hungry for the hope that comes from stories of nonviolence in action.

Book Description
This book gives an almost forgotten history concerning civilian university scientists, who carried out research on defense against poison gases in some unusual places during World War II. Most of these were graduate students, working under the direction of professors at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of California (Berkeley). The first job on these projects was to make major improvements on gas masks. Later, most activities were done outdoors to assess the effects of terrain and meteorological conditions on the travel and dissipation of toxic gas clouds. Action took place in California, Florida, and the jungles of Panama.
On these two parallel projects, one young participant was a big, healthy, athletic extrovert, who was deeply trained in the physical sciences, and by age twenty-nine (in 1943) was world famous in physics and in biology. Another was opposite in many ways: a skinny sickly loner, who was minimally schooled in science and mathematics. From the ten principal people working on these two projects, one was killed by accident while experimenting with a poison gas in the laboratory; another was proud of how he had defeated the draft system in an unusual way.
Customer Reviews:
A Bridge Not Attacked: chemical Warfare Civilian Research During World War II.......2005-08-08
This is a well written documentary of behind the scenes scientific efforts during World War II. It is written with heart, intelligence, and humor. The reader is drawn into the story, though it is a documentary, autobiographical in reality and in essence. Thinking men/women will appreciate the thought process needed by the author when he was confronted with problems to solve, sometimes in spite of assignments. He and his group spare hundreds with a special odiferous skunk smell instead of carrying out chemical testing, first. If that part of the story is is the only portion read, chuckles followed by the realization of the serious consequences will occur. At that point, the reader realizes this is not small story. It is real.

Book Description
Japanâs traditional and fragile satoyama landscape system was developed over centuries of human life on mountainous island terrain in a monsoon climate. The carefully managed coppice woodlands on the hillsides, the villages strung along the base of the hills, and the carefully tended paddy fields of rural Japan made possible the sustainable interaction of nature and humans. Radical changes in the middle of the twentieth century led to the abandonment of satoyama landscapes which now are being rediscovered. There is a new realization that these woodlands still play a vital role in the management of the Japanese landscape and a new determination to manage them for the future. This multifaceted book explores the history, nature, biodiversity, current conservation measures, and future uses of satoyama. The information presented here will be of interest in all parts of the world where patterns of sustainable development are being sought.
