                  Book Description

Recent developments have shown that many full and partial ophiolites are preserved in Precambrian cratons. This book provides a comprehensive description and discussion of the field aspects, geochemistry, geochronology and structure of the best of these ophiolites. It also presents syntheses of the characteristics of ophiolites of different ages, and an analysis of what the characteristics of these ophiolites mean for the thermal and chemical evolution of the earth.

This title emphasizes new studies of Precambrian Geology that have documented ophiolites, ophiolitic fragments, and ophiolitic melanges in many Precambrian terranes. Each chapter focuses on individual Precambrian ophiolites or regions with numerous Precambrian ophiolites, and covers field aspects, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and other descriptive aspects of these ophiolites, it also delves into more theoretical and speculative aspects about the interpretation of the significance of these ancient ophiolites.

The author sets out upon a great mission - to outline how scientific discovery has lead to a change in the public's perception of the world. However, the final product is left wanting. At times the examples used are obvious. At other times, the author does not explain the scientific innovation enough for even an experienced scientist. However, the conclusions drawn from the examples are accurate and well argued. Given the objective, I expected more than what was written.

5 out of 5 stars One of my ULTIMATE FAVORITES - have re-read it at least 10 times.......2007-09-23

As an obsessive reader of both the regency and paranormal genres, with a particular fondness for WIT, this is one of my all time favorites. The only thing I don't like about the book is the cover - a style which I normally like very much, but I think it does a grave disservice to the contents, implying a level of fun (correctly) and modernity (UNtrue) and in no way indicates that it's an exceptionally well done PERIOD piece.
Usually I'm not wild about dialect, but Maggie MacKeever has a deft and amusing touch with it that I really appreciate. And I can only imagine how much fun she had either creating and/or researching the 'Romanian proverbs' at the beginning of each chapter. Isidore is a HOOT!!
Her characters have a wonderful, down to earth realism to them which is refreshing in a shared genre book where such is often not the case in either genre. And I enjoyed every single one of the supporting characters and the dialogue. In fact, her facility and gently satirical touch reminds me of Jane Austen - a similarity I have rarely perceived in modern writers.
                        And MacKeever can WRITE!
I cannot recommend this piece of charm, fluff and quality strongly enough. And I sincerely hope that she will write in this genre again. Waiting for the next book impatiently -
                        - a real fan

                        4 out of 5 stars Different; Interesting.......2006-03-20

I like the fast disappearing Regency genre and I suppose inserting a "vampire" theme is a way to draw in an audience wishing for more spice in their books. Whether it succeeds remains to be seen. I liked this book - the characters in it were very different. The lead woman, Emily, was a contrast to the norm. Left in charge of a strange society after the death (murder?) of her father, she enlists the help of a vampire to retrieve items stolen from this same society. Val (Ravensclaw aka Count Revey-Czobar) - after some time, fully admits to being "other-worldly". We are not inundated with a lot of information about the vampire life or Emily's society. I can't yet decide if I liked that or not. It seemed so much of the story missing, yet I get tired of books that have to spend a lot of time explaining their world. After all, a Regency novel has a limited number of pages to get the story done.

I enjoyed the secondary characters which are introduced. Emily's conflicted feelings about her ex-fiancé are an added benefit. Emily's overt desire of Val does add the needed spice. The seduction scenes - all thwarted for the most part - are well done. The story of retrieving the missing items is lost in all the other events but the story does come to a fairly predictable ending. Yet there is a little indecisiveness to the happily-ever-after. I am looking forward to other books like this by this author as I have already read some of her more traditional Regencies.

2 out of 5 stars Blah, Blah, Blah.......2006-02-20

Like other reviewers I had a very hard time getting through this book. The Author gave both too much information and not enough. She would describe the placement of a lamp on a table but not the passage of time. Suddenly characters would be in a new locale, which was expounded upon, but gave little reason or lead up as to how they got there.
Also frustrating was the use of accented writing. A little bit of native speech is fine to flavor the writing but the Author went overboard. It got to the point where I had absolutely no idea what was being said.
I am glad to see more and more Paranormal Romances being written, but not in this sloppy fashion. Do not pay full price for this book!

                        5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2005-10-17

This book -- like most of MacKeever's -- is a very engaging and amusing read. Unlike the previous reviewer, I really enjoyed the details that gave me a strong sense of being in Edinburgh. As for Emily and Val, I thought they were great together, and was sorry for their story to end. I especially liked the Romanian proverbs that headed each chapter, and several of them made me laugh out loud. And then there was the ghost--

People unfamiliar with traditional Regencies might not understand the conventions, or that only so much 'sizzle' is allowed. (Emily and Val definitely pushed the envelope.) For those of us familiar with the genre, Maggie MacKeever has long a favorite. For her to add vampires to her repertoire is a real treat, and I hope she does many more 'paranormal' stories. I'd rate this a 'must read'.

3 out of 5 stars More Fizzle than Sizzle.......2005-10-06

Author seemed to have relied too heavily on detailing things that I found extremely distracting from the story. I just don't find it necessary to know every minute detail unless it has some bearing on what is happening; it tends to make me feel as though the author is just filling space. I enjoyed both characters (Emily and Val) seperately but didn't really get a sense of them together; they sort of fizzled instead of sizzled. The author spent so much time in describing things around them that she sort of left the main characters to develop on their own and as best they could. Although all the characters were quite colorful and indeed enjoyable, "Waltz With A Vampire" had all the elements to be a thoroughly funny romance novel but just missed the mark. A shame indeed.

                        Book Description

Only now can the full scope of the war in the Pacific be fully understood. Historian Ronald Spector, drawing on newly declassified intelligence files, an abundance of British and American archival material. Japanese scholarship and documents, and research and memoirs of scholarly and military men, has written a stunning, complete and up-to-date history of the conflict.

5 out of 5 stars A One Volume History of the Pacific War.......2007-06-25

Ronald Spector's "Eagle Against The Sun" was published as far back as 1985 but holds up extremely well as perhaps the best one-volume history of the U.S. war with Japan. Spector's sweep is broad, inclusive, and incisive, packing a tremendous amount of analysis into just 500 pages.

Spector starts, not with Pearl Harbor, but with the political and military climates in the United States and Japan before the war, to make the point that decisions on aircraft, ship types and war plans would have an enormous impact on the opening phases of the war. Spector, a Vietnam veteran, was no worshiper of the brass; his caustic analysis of the U.S. command structure in the Pacific and the planning of each campaign suggests just how much was owed to political as well as to military considerations.

Spector's concise narrative sketches each of the major campaigns in the Central and Southwest Pacific areas, while finding time to address U.S. efforts in the China-Burma-India theater as well. The reader is left with a stunning sense of the sheer scale of the war waged against Japan. Spector also imparts an appreciation for the ability of the U.S. Armed Forces to overcame surprise and a lack of preparation in 1941 to defeat the Japanese Empire by 1945.

This book is highly recommended as a detailed popular history of the war in the Pacific that will appeal to both the general reader and the student of military history.

5 out of 5 stars All the Amazon Reviews of this book are correct.......2007-04-18

Based on the 19 reviews in Amazon I bought the book. The reviews are on target, even the comments about the paucity of maps which I found to be only a minor issue for me. Spector's writing style is a big factor in enjoying this book. So, if you want a good overview of the Pacific war, this book is a very good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Why it happened. Not how........2007-01-11

An excellent fresh look 'behind the scenes' at the war in the Pacific. Gives fascinating personal, technical and logistic data to compliment the well known strategy and battle plans. Required reading for the 'expert' on this conflict. Hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Analysis of the Pacific War.......2006-07-31

This is a superb analysis of the Pacific War between the USA and Japan. It is always very difficult for an author to strike a balance between sufficient detail on the one hand, and the risk of overwhelming the "big picture" with too much detail, on the other. Here, the author hits it just right. This is a detailed and thorough analysis of the Pacific War that focuses on the main trends of the war, while supplying sufficient detail to support the themes that the author presents to the reader.

Spector's basic thesis is not new, but this is the best presentation of it that I have encountered. Essentially, the author notes that superior American industrial capacity, organizational skills, and technology overwhelmed a highly trained, well-armed and competent Japanese foe. The Japanese training regime was brutal, featuring tough night training in the icy waters south of the Kurils--Japanese skill at night naval engagements were to give the US Navy ugly moments for years. On the other hand, the author speculates that the savage discipline of the Japanese service tended to "burn out" its officers, often causing them to avoid "thinking outside the box."

Both sides had problems with inter-service rivalries. The Americans fought the war with divided commands, whereby MacArthur advanced through the South Pacific with most of the Army, while Nimitz advanced through the Central Pacific with the bulk of the Navy and the Marines. The author argues that this was an inefficient, sub-optimal strategy. The Japanese Army and Navy were even more riven with rivalries, and the Japanese Navy on numerous occasions concealed from the Army the scope of its defeats at the hands of the US Navy. (It was a long time before the Japanese Army learned of the disasterous defeat of the Navy at Midway; the Army believed that Japan had won, not lost, the Battle of Leyte Gulf).

This is a fairly conventional analysis of the Pacific War, but the author sometimes does come to unorthodox conclusions that will challenge the reader's own opinions about command decisions made by the Pacific War's heavyweights. Frank Jack Fletcher merits heavy blame for lacking aggressiveness on several occasions, which is no surprise, but at times Admiral Spruance (a personal hero of mine) also comes in for criticisms that I did not expect. The author overall attempts to be fair, however, and generally does a pretty fair job of making his case.

Overall, this is perhaps the best single volume analysis of the Pacific War written for the general public that I have come across, and it is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent One Volume History of Pacific War.......2004-06-01

A very readable, interesting history of the Pacific theater in World War II. Despite being a single volume Spector does a masterful job of covering all the key aspects of the Pacific war and does so in a very complete manner. The earlier reviewers comments about the lack of maps is true; you might want to have an atlas handy while reading this book. Definitely worth your investment several times over in both time and money.

                                            Book Description

Between 1940 and 1945, thousands of African Americans migrated from the South to the East Bay Area of northern California in search of the social and economic mobility that was associated with the region's expanding defense industry and its reputation for greater racial tolerance. Drawing on fifty oral interviews with migrants as well as on archival and other written records, Abiding Courage examines the experiences of the African American women who migrated west and built communities there.

Gretchen Lemke-Santangelo vividly shows how women made the transition from southern domestic and field work to jobs in an industrial, wartime economy. At the same time, they were struggling to keep their families together, establishing new households, and creating community-sustaining networks and institutions. While white women shouldered the double burden of wage labor and housework, black women faced even greater challenges: finding houses and schools, locating churches and medical services, and contending with racism. By focusing on women, Lemke-Santangelo provides new perspectives on where and how social change takes place and how community is established and maintained.

                                                  Book Description

The latest edition of this very successful and authoritative set of tables, first published in 1984, still benefits from clear typesetting, which makes the figures easy to read and use, but has been improved by the addition of new tables. These give Bayesian confidence limits for the binomial and Poisson distributions, and for the square of the multiple correlation coefficient, which have not been previously available. The intervals are the shortest possible, consistent with the requirement on probability. The authors have taken great care to ensure the clarity of the tables and how their values may be used; the tables are easily interpolated. The book contains all the tables likely to be required for elementary statistical methods in the social, business and natural sciences, and will be an essential aid for teachers, users and students in these areas.
