Customer Reviews:
Great resource for handling every aspect of dyslexia.......2007-10-05
This book is a wonderful way to learn what dyslexia is scientifically, the symptoms associated with it, and how to handle the disability. It is very straight forward, gives realistic suggestions and links to wonderful websites. Above all, it stresses the positive aspects of dyslexia and all a person with dyslexia CAN accomplish; which is everything! With this book I now consider myself an expert on the subject.
The book for people with Dyslexia.......2007-10-05
This is the best book for anyone that does not know about Dyslexia. Our son has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and we have given copies of this book out to all of his teachers every year. Just last year, his teacher said that after 20 years of teaching she didn't know of any children with Dyslexia in her class but after reading the book she can pick out at least 4.
Must-Have Resource.......2007-10-03
Dr. Shaywitz provides so much information that you won't want to just check this one out from the library--you'll want it for your bookshelf. It will be a well-used resource for many years!
Overcoming dyslexia requires a structured program..........2007-09-30
...because, as the author asserts, dyslexia does not remit spontaneously. That is, once you have it, it is yours, more or less, for life.
This assertion holds true only if dyslexic children do not receive a structured reading-phonics program, such as the one offered by Kumon centers across North America. (BTW, Kumon instructors never refer to "learning disability" or "dyslexia," but instead, to "struggling readers.") This program is one of daily practice for about 20 minutes, and has embedded the three components of successful anti-dyslexia programs: practice, sight vocabulary, and phonics/phonemic awareness.
Curiously, Dr. Shaywitz mentions U. of Oregon DIEBELS programs, but is not acquainted with Kumon, which has an equally broad reach across the country.
A Must Read for Parents, Educators and Rdg Teachers! .......2007-09-27
This was an amazing book. There IS hope if you or someone you know is dyslexic! This is an encouraging book that empowers you to take charge and help your child, student, yourself... become a stronger reader!
Dispells many myths about dyslexia and what it is.
Focuses on strategies and curriculum based on strong research.
Describes how the brain works when it comes to language... and how brain scans have shown "improvement" in areas of the brain (left lobes) that have been activated after effective reading strategies and programs have been implemented.
It is filled with lots and lots of specific, practical ideas, resources and information about how readers learn to read and how we can help children (and adults) who have difficulty reading. Although the title refers to dyslexia, it is a great book if you want to understand how the reading process works and what you can do as a parent/teacher/caregiver to help your child overcome dyslexia,to solidify your child's reading skills if they don't have dyslexia, or to get them off to a great start reading in the early years. There are also specific descriptions of which signs to look for EARLY ON to detect any reading difficulties or dyslexia and address them then.
I used many of the ideas in the text with my own daughter who is learning to read... and also with a few students I've worked with who struggle with reading. I was surprised to find that many of the descriptions in the book, of the kinds of errors that children with reading difficulties or dyslexia make, exactly described some of the things I was seeing with the children I worked with.
This is a book I borrowed from the library first, then knew, without a doubt, I had to buy and have for a reference again and again!

Book Description
This is the first complete story, long hidden by the Soviet Union, of the attack by government forces on striking workers in 1962, resulting in 21 dead and hundreds of others wounded or imprisoned. Only with the advent of glasnost in the 1980s did the tight lid of secrecy placed on the entire episode by the Soviets begin slowly to lift.

DEAD ON.......2005-10-28
What's lame is lame and what's fun is fun, these reviews are blunt but funny. I've lived in Chicago over ten years - and think the people who had a problem with this book must not get out often.
Dead-on reviews.......2002-09-22
I've had a copy of this book and enjoyed reading the often-snarky reviews, but I didn't really know how reliable the book was. I just showed the book to a friend of mine as we were driving into the city, and she confirmed the accuracy. She's worked in the city for years and has been to many of the places mentioned. She was howling at the descriptions because they were witty and astute. We even stopped in at one of the dive bars that night, and darned if it wasn't painfully on the money. A great guide to anyone looking for a good night out. I just wish they had more of these for other cities.
Shecky's is ..........2001-11-22
Ugh. This book manages to take the colorful underworld of Chicago nightlife and make it boring. I agree with the earlier posts that it's mean-spirited and sloppy, and many of the reviews are so off-base it makes you wonder if the author actually visited the bar.
But there's good news - the infamous red book ("official Chicag bar guide") that an earlier poster raved about *has* been updated. I just found it a minute ago. It comes out December 1.
Hip and Happen'n.......2001-10-12
A must-have for your coffee table or barstool. This book is an enjoyable trist into the strange, but true Chicago night life. Hyde Park never seemed so appealing! Give this book as a gift to all your happen'n friends!
Save your $.......2001-07-25
Good gawd, this sucks - and I love bar guides.
The problem is, Shecky's doesn't have any of the information you want or need about which bars to go to. Instead it has annoying, smarmy observations by people who obviously don't know much about the bars or the people who hang out in them. I think the writers should have used a little more space giving us facts and a little less space cracking wise.
I guess I didn't mind all the misprints and typos on every page so long as the meat of the information is there. But when the meat tastes this bad...
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!!!!.......1999-07-09
I was first introduced to Roz Chast's work in The New Yorker but was never quite sure what to make of her cartoons. Her understated, offbeat humor escaped me when I would happen upon one of her drawings in the magazine. Then, I bought this book, purely out curiosity. I was hooked! It's hard to describe Chast's style. It's satirical but not mean-spirited. She pokes fun at the very average, situation and very average people -- people named Mabel and Vern -- but with a twist. Her cartoons on childhood and its traumas are absolutely priceless. Her sense of humor, writing, and drawings are distinctly her own. No, this might not be the type of humor that will send you rolling to the floor, but the more you read, the more funny everything in Chast's quirky world becomes. She's actually added phrases to my vocabulary. I only wish I could find more of her books in print! (I also highly recommend "Proof of Life on Earth.")

One of the great literary self-portraits........2000-11-20
Most people who would be interested in reading "Knowing When to Stop" are probably familiar with Rorem's diaries. His memoir ends the year he first started the journals contained in "The Paris Diaries," and "Knowing When to Stop" not only fills the autobiographical, pre-diary gap, but also stands as one of most extraordinary self-portraits ever written. Rorem recounts, in his graceful, inimitable style, his childhood, musical training, early sex life (of course), his first years in Europe and, most absorbingly, his friendships with some of the most famous artists, both musical and otherwise, of the century. Bernstein, Cage, Katchen, Thomson, Copland, Boulez, Capote, Paul and Jane Bowles--Rorem describes them with sympathy and insight. Rorem's own mortality hangs shadowlike over every page of "Knowing," and his assessments of his work and life are penetrating and brutally honest. All in all, one of the best books I've ever read and a poignant, profound meditation of life and art.
Ned knew everybody who mattered and can't resist telling us.......1999-04-21
Astonishing autobiography that also serves as a cultural history of the post-war literary and musical worlds of New York and Paris.
Not Knowing When to Stop.......1997-09-27
I still remember the day I passed by the bookstore window and saw Ned Rorem's new book "Knowing When to Stop" in the window. I literally doubled over with laughter right there on the street, and immediately ran into the store to buy it, thinking that Rorem had finally developed a sense or irony. Imagine my disappointment...
Slogging through the self-pity to find the diamonds.......1997-01-06
The beginning of this book is fantastic. Mr Rorem has decided that there are but two esthetics in this world, and that everything can be applied to either one or the other. When he writes, as he did there, in the present, speaking of himself in the present, Mr Rorem is at his best, but when he begins to delve into his youth the reader is forced to wade through a trough of self-pity and self-hatred. There is very little to like about the younger Ned Rorem, and had there not been the occasional spurt of wisdom and humor I doubt I would have finished this mammoth tome.
The most enjoyable sections were Mr Rorem's recollections of his associations with other stars in the twentieth-century musical firmament, most especially Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, as well as Martha Graham. I have the feeling that I would both like and enjoy Mr Rorem as he lives today, but I would have avoided him had he and I been young contemporaries.

Book Description
Radio has played a pivotal role in Africa situations of conflict, crisis, and in the overall development of the African continent. No other medium of communication in Africa comes close to radio in terms of audience, political significance and cultural power. Local radio stations as well as international broadcasters have been at once the barometers and the agents of change. This book provides a timely and cross-continental perspective on a much-neglected aspect of African public culture in its political structures and economic fortunes. Based on a series of case studies by academics and radio journalists, the contributors to this book analyze the role of radio in public life in situations of conflict and peace, and argue for the importance and success of diversity and localization in African radio.

iMac for Dummies Quick Reference.......2007-03-08
This quick reference was recommended with my purchase of iMac for Dummies operating system 10. Unfortunately it is a reference for system 9 and Appleworks, which is not included in the new iMac. I felt it should have not been recommended by Amazon as it is outdated.
iMac for Dummies quick reference.......2007-01-10

A good guide for beginning Imac users.......2000-12-04
The Imac for Dummies by Jennifer Watson is a very useful guide for amature Imac users. The insturctions are so easy to follow that even those intimidated by computers are encouraged when techniques are easily applied. This quick reference covers a wide range of topics. From basic instruction on desk top/home base use, mastering files, and discs, to connecting to the Internet, sending and receiving faxes and e-mails, and editing videos and exporting movies. It also includes a handy glossary of key terms.
I gave this book a five star rating because it fullfilled my needs as a beginning Imac user. It's a great guide for students of various ages. A wonderful supplement to technology curriculum. Personally, it helped me as I'm presently taking a fast pased computer-based education course. I use this book intermitently when I work on my own, at my own speed. I get quick, easy answers to questions I have about the Imac. This is a great start up book for those, who like myself, are new to the Imac. Once you feel comfortable with the Imac, this books serves as an excellent reference guide. I was able to help my boyfriend send a fax with his Imac. The book is small, easy to carry, and competitively priced. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
The American experience in Vietnam divided us as a nation and eroded our confidence in both the morality and the effectiveness of our foreign policy. Yet our understanding of this tragic episode remains superficial because, then and now, we have never grasped the passionate commitment with which the Vietnamese clung to and fought over their own competing visions of what Vietnam was and what it might become. To understand the war, we must understand the Vietnamese, their culture, and their ways of looking at the world. Neil L. Jamieson, after many years of living and working in Vietnam, has written the book that provides this understanding.
Jamieson paints a portrait of twentieth-century Vietnam. Against the background of traditional Vietnamese culture, he takes us through the saga of modern Vietnamese history and Western involvement in the country, from the coming of the French in 1858 through the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Throughout his analysis, he allows the Vietnamese--both our friends and foes, and those who wished to be neither--to speak for themselves through poetry, fiction, essays, newspaper editorials and reports of interviews and personal experiences.
By putting our old and partial perceptions into this new and broader context, Jamieson provides positive insights that may perhaps ease the lingering pain and doubt resulting from our involvement in Vietnam. As the United States and Vietnam appear poised to embark on a new phase in their relationship, Jamieson's book is particularly timely.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2007-04-13
I grew up with a lot of second generation Vietnamese and had a relatively significant amount of exposure to the culture. After reading this book I can look back and understand a lot of things better. For example I knew that Viet people are tremendously loyal to thier parents but after reading this book I have a much better understanding of why.
I thought the way he used Yin and Yang to explain things throughout the book was very neat. I think my one complaint is that it does get a little confusing in a couple of places, especially the section covering the 1950's. But I get the empression that the 1950's were a just a confusing time in Vietnam and the rest of the book is great. Much of it does read like a novel.
Understanding Vietnamese writers.......2004-05-10
I bought this hoping to learn more about the Vietnamese people and their history. I got bogged down with all the poetry and prose quoted by the writer. While he brushes off the importance of the battle of Dien Bien Phu in a couple of lines; he drones on quoting (translating) obscure Vietnamese writers until the reader becomes weary. His premise seems to be that if you understand some writer (who he thinks is interesting) and attach importance to what he said then you will understand Vietnam. His annoying treatment of Yin and Yang finally caused me to put the book down and look for another way to understand Vietnam. If you like words such as "efficacy" and "entropy" you will love this writer; if such words irritate you, give this book a pass.
WOW.......2003-04-15
This book's focus on contemporary Vietnamese literary sources through the years makes it absolutely unique in the field. Its blend of straight history narrative and multiple-voice literature excerpts fleshes out Vietnamese society in a way that was sorely needed in the field. To those well-read in Asian studies: this book can almost be seen as a Vietnam analog to Patricia Ebrey's book "Chinese Civilization: A Sourcebook," which is a collection of contemporary Chinese sources through history.
The history is instructive and concise, with little excess prose. Jamieson writes in an eminently readable style, and focuses on the most interesting events in order to keep the reader from being bored. He does a pretty good job of giving both Northern and Southern Vietnamese viewpoints, although he does focus a little more than would be preferable on South Vietnam, especially in the later parts of the book. The twentieth century chapters do a better job than almost any book on the market in focusing on the Vietnamese, rather than on the multi-decade war in which they fought.
My only complaint is that the extended yin/yang analogy used to explain societal trends was not very helpful. On the whole, though, I'm really impressed.
Excellent!!! Very accurate!!! Must Read!!!!!!!!.......2002-07-20
I think this book is amazing! Jamieson accuately protrays Vietnam and Vietnamese culture through the eyes and views of the Vietnamese in a way never before written by a Westerner. He is articulate of the moods and feelings faceing the Vietnamese, well educated in the arts and literature of Vietnam, understands the importance to the core family structure, and scholarly in his research of what it means to be Vietnamese. I highly recommend this book if you want to understand the Vietnamese people who live in Vietnam, in the US, or anywhere...
Outstanding........2002-01-26
This is a somewhat difficult book to understand, although it turns out to be a gem.
The author sets out to demonstrate that Vietnamese society, history, and culture from 1700 to 1990 revolve around the yin and yang system. While harmony derives from a balance between these two elements, an imbalance on the other hand results in revolution and war. The forces, which have been pulling the Vietnamese community apart since 1920, came to a head-on battle in 1945-50.
During the 1954-1975 war, the northern yang being stronger and more refined than the southern one led to a northern invasion and collapse of South Vietnam. The hegemony and repression of the north, however, caused a violent reaction of the southern yin during the post 1975 years: exodus of hundreds of thousands of boat people, and refusal of farmers to participate in the collectivization of the agriculture causing a decrease in productivity. Those who could not escape survived by peddling their belongings at flea markets, which over a period of time grew into a vibrant capitalistic system thanks in part to the money sent home by relatives abroad, especially in the U.S. A decade later, the southern economy rebounded while the northern counterpart floundered. This led to a reversal of the dogmatic northern policy and implementation of the "doi moi" policy in 1985.
The author also suggests that happiness and prosperity cannot come to Vietnam unless true freedom and basic human rights are respected.
The American Library Association has voted "Understanding Vietnam" the 1994 Outstanding Academic Book.

Book Description
Many aspects of the Tet offensive of 1968 are brought to light here. The offensive is acknowledged as the turning point of the Vietnam War. Using Communist Vietnamese documents combined with Western sources, the author provides a more accurate version of the events, their significance, and reveals the crucial role played by US intelligence. This book illustrates that in the 1960s the Communist Vietnamese were well aware of the political and diplomatic nature of a People's War.
Customer Reviews:
A view from North Vietnam.......2003-11-10
Ronnie Ford did an excellent job of bringing together a wealth of information which presents the Tet Offensive of January and February 1968 largely from a North Vietnamese perpective. His work clears up a lot of the mystery surrounding the North's decision to launch an offensive that resulted in a disasterous military defeat for North Vietnam, but which ultimately led to the withdrawal of the United States from South Vietnam. A necessary addition to any serious library focusing on the Vietnam War.

A superb compliation of the writings of Col. L. Fletcher Prouty on the serious subject..........2006-07-13
of the Vietnam war, and other related topics
in that time period. Col. Prouty made many
of these such interviews in this time period
before his heart operation. Mr Prouty was on
the Tom Valentine show on shortwave radio 41
times, which is the record number for any one
guest and we the listeners got to chase many
rabbits down the trail from man who started
in the horse-drawn cavalry days of the US army
in 1939! Mr Prouty, who did his best work on
'JFK', died at aged 84 in 2001. He was born 4

hedl his tongue in interview with wacky John
Judge, a zionistic type. Quite a life and it

Customer Reviews:
A year on the open plains . . ........2006-08-15
Though not an ambitious book, this account of a year spent on the plains of eastern Colorado vividly portrays the experience of isolation felt by the author and of his growing appreciation for the stark landscape and its wildlife. Taking a brief job with a ranch owner and wheat grower, Kesselheim finds the days turning into months as he eventually takes up residence in an empty and unfurnished ranch house, miles from the nearest hardtop road, a stranger in a widely scattered community, where besides his employer, he gets to know only two other men, one of them a weathered and taciturn cowboy, the other a small subsistence farmer with a young family.
The long summer days are filled with making repairs, fencing, drilling wheat, and branding cattle. Then during a long wait for the owner to acquire a herd of feeder calves, the author deepens his awareness of this lonely environment and the impact of settlement over only two generations of farmers and ranchers. The winter ends with a cataclysmic blizzard that lasts for days and leaves behind a landscape of devastation.
For readers interested in rural life on the Great Plains, this book is a small gem, well-written, poetic at times, and often compelling. In its appreciation for this flat, open land, where horizons reveal the curvature of the earth, it brings to mind Ian Frazier's "Great Plains," and its final chapters recall Wallace Stegner's powerful story, "Carrion Spring."
