Book Description
An in-depth technical guide on the security technology driving Internet e-commerce expansion.
"Planning for PKI" examines the number-one Internet security technology that will be widely adopted in the next two years. Written by two of the architects of the Internet PKI standards, this book provides authoritative technical guidance for network engineers, architects, and managers who need to implement the right PKI architecture for their organization. The authors discuss results and lessons learned from early PKI pilots, helping readers evaluate PKI deployment impact on current network architecture while avoiding the pitfalls of early technical mistakes. Four technical case studies detail the do's and don'ts of PKI implementation, illustrating both successes and failures of different deployments. Readers will also learn how to leverage future PKI-related technologies for additional benefits.

Very useful guide to PKI........2003-11-19
If you have just started working with PKI software or with OpenSSL and would like to gain a better understanding of X.509 certificates, certificate enrollment protocols and PKI, this book is for you. It's an excellent guide written by two of the co-authors of the "Internet X.509 Public Key Infrastructure: Certificate and Certificate Revocation List (CRL) Profile" (RFC 3280).
planning for PKI.......2002-07-20
I was expecting something which is more practical with regards to PKI. Author talks about theory of PKI in half the book. And then provides case studies which has very low utility if you are thinking of implementing PKI in J2EE or .NET or even ordinary ecommerce applications...The title is totally a misnomer. Only good thing i found was that the theory presented was helpful to understand PKI...
What a great read.......2002-06-05
WOW, this goes into some great detail. I am new to PKI, but this has really opened up my eyes to some of the more exquisite details. Great for anyone interested in PKI, but you do need to have some knowledge on Cryptography.
Still work to be done with PKI.......2002-01-27
While Planning for PKI is a well written book, after reading I still am not sure how it all fits together. I bought the book to learn more about PKI and chose this book because previous references rated this as the best book available on PKI. After reading this book I know a little more about PKI, but this book did not "de-mistify" PKI for me.
Planning for PKI: Non-techie's review.......2001-09-18
This is a great book for those of us who are NOT PKI development engineers. I learned a lot from this book; the authors, Russ Housley and Tim Polk, were able to present technical material in a way that was completely understandable to non-technical people who are interested in Internet and computer security issues. The Appendix on ASN.1, for example, clarified structures for me. As a policy person, I particularly enjoyed the Chapter on PKI Policy, thought it well written, succinct, and right on target. Since I read this book, I have referenced it in presentations and papers on the subject. Great work!

Book Description
A profits-oriented approach to cash flow management for independent business owners/managers. Thousands of mangers have found this a superb tool for day-to-day management of a firm's cash flow.
Cash Flow Problem Solver was selected as an alternate of both the Business Week Book Club and the Fortune Book Club.
Cash Flow Problem Solver serves as a valuable tool for day-to-day management of a firm's cash flow. The discussion focuses on the management principles that can help a business manger or owner anticipate and avoid many potential cash flow problems. However, the best foresight cannot anticipate every cash flow problem. So, the discussion also illustrates how to handle the cash flow problems that do occur.
The book's focus centers on the basic principles that help orient positive cash flow management in a business. A positive effort goes beyond anticipating or overcoming cash flow problems. That effort can add significant dollars to a firm's earnings. Positive cash flow management can become a new profit center for a business. You will find realistic examples of the positive principles in action. Then, you will find the action tools necessary to turn the potential increase in earnings into measurable bottom-line benefits.

Book Description
The Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has presented strong evidence that human-induced climate change is occurring and that all countries of the world will be affected and need to adapt to impacts. The IPCC points out that many developing countries are particularly vulnerable because of their relatively low adaptive capacity. Therefore it is seen as a development priority to help these countries enhance their adaptive capacity to climate change.
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Stratus Consulting organized a workshop in the fall of 2001 to develop an agenda for research on how best to enhance the capacity of developing countries to adapt to climate change. This research agenda is relevant for governments and institutions that wish to support developing countries in adapting to climate change. The workshop brought together experts from developing and industrialized countries, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral and bilateral donor organizations to discuss a number of important topics related to adaptation, adaptive capacity and sustainable development. A dozen papers were commissioned to cover these topics, both from a theoretical perspective and in the form of national case studies. The papers form the basis for this important book, which presents the latest interdisciplinary knowledge about the nature and components of adaptive capacity and how it may be strengthened.

Book Description
An initial investment is all she needs . . .
The stereotype is "starving artist" not "starving entrepreneur." However, business-school grad Maddy Banks lives in her office, works 24/7 and hasn't shopped in so long that her closet has official historical status. Still, she's convinced that her manic drive, propensity for risk and dogged follow-through will make her millions. Someday. They have to. Right?
Success comes at a price . . .
When "death" gives Maddy a second chance at happiness, she quickly realizes that schmoozing and spreadsheeting her way through life isn't much of a life at all. Armed with an angel investor and a hot VC (um, that's venture capitalist), Maddy starts party planning for those who won't be attending . . . while she learns some hard lessons about trust, working with "friends" and mixing business with pleasure.
Customer Reviews:
This was better than I thought it would be.......2006-07-24
Madison aka Maddy Banks has been going from entrepreneur career through entrepreneur career, with many failures. After going to a funeral for a friend, she realizes her calling. Planning personalized funerals, with the new company she's going to build called Lights Out. She gets emotional and financial help from her Uncle Sam. And before she can even begin her new career, Sam dies of Cancer. His is the first furneral she plans, and it's a hit. Soon, she has people lined up to do funerals for. One costumer even wanted his furneral twice. Just so he could live through the first one. But things take a bad turn when her arch rival, the man behind satabogiging all of her other businesses she's had, decided to open his own funeral company, and steals all of Maddy's ideas, as well as many of Maddy's backers and clients. At the advice of her handsome Venture Capitalist, she decides to take time out for herself, and to properly grieve her friend Tara and her uncle. After spending time in Ann Arbor, she not only regroups, but with an old friend of her uncle's who used to own a funeral parlor, makes a pamplet on how to grieve, and hold grieving seminars. With this new info, she puts Lights Out back on track, and even gets the upperhand on her competition.
I have to say one of the things that I liked about this book is that the main character is bi, and even though she winds up with a man at the end, there are some scenes with her and her ex-girlfriend, whom she remains close with. This book made me laugh and cry at the same time through a few chapters of it. The bad guys in the book get their just deserts, and Maddy also realizes what unconditional love from a dog can do to someone in need, like herself.
Devious witty satire with a little romance, too!.......2006-05-22
I picked this up in desperation in the airport for the first leg of a business trip & found myself engrossed all the way from NYC to Scotsdale. This is a fresh & clever take on the heroine's journey, complete with wise advisors, betrayers who represent the worst parts of ourselves, true friends, and the love we can never find until we find ourselves. What makes it really special, however, is the wonderful work setting - it's a terrific satiric dissection of both funeral & wedding planning, two of our society's most dysfunctional social rituals. To fit this book in a chick lit framework takes a devious and witty mind indeed, so 3 cheers for Lynn Isenberg, and here's hoping she tackles the $100,000 wedding phenomenon head on next!
Shoddy at best.......2006-04-18
I had a really hard time with this book- in fact, I am still struggling through it, determined to finish.
Quite frankly, what first turned me off was the whole character of Uncle Sam. I wanted to hit him, and the narrator, repeatedly with a large stick. The character of Sam himself was entirely fake, and so was the relationship between him and Maddy. I could barely stomach it.
There were a few grammatical errors that I couldn't believe passed under the radar, as well, and in general, I've found the writing to be very dull and shallow.
I also have a hard time following a timeline in this book- what seems like a few days turns out to be, in actuality, a few months. There are no "time buoys", so to speak- very few landmarks.
I recommend you stay away from this book.
Chick-Lit hits an all-time low.......2005-10-07
Picked The Funeral Planner up for an airplane trip and was sorely disappointed. Terrible writing (sprinkled liberally with incorrect grammar and punctuation; the occasional spelling error as well), cliched characters, no sense of pacing and a bumbling attempt to structure the novel as a business plan that dragged the boring parts out even more. The main character was so insipid I found myself hoping she would fail in her endeavors, but I put the book down long before I had a chance to find out.
I understand that chick-lit isn't necessarily Pulitzer material, but despite a cute concept (self-evident in the title)this book was a real disappointment. I'm frankly surprised the author managed to get it published.
The Funeral Planner.......2005-09-19
It's not a coincidence that a book about the funeral industry could serve as a reminder to celebrate life as it's been lived. Isenberg's "The Funeral Planner" is a treasure chest filled with shining gems of stories, anecdotes that resonate of reality despite the book's fiction status. The fact that the book is, in itself, a novel that launched an actual business, isn't its greatest success but its ability to remind the reader that it's never too late to change the direction of life and never too early to think about the best way to celebrate it.

Book Description
Vicki Le?n, the popular author of the Uppity Women series (more than 335,000 in print), has turned her impressive writing and research skills to the entertaining and unusual array of the peculiar jobs, prized careers and passionate pursuits of ancient Greece and Rome.
From Architect to Vicarius (a deputy or stand-in)—and everything in between—Working IX to V introduces readers to the most unique (dream incubator), most courageous (elephant commander), and even the most ordinary (postal worker) jobs of the ancient world. Vicki Le?n brought a light and thoughtful touch to women’s history in her earlier books, and she brings the same joy and singular voice to the daily work of the ancient world. You’ll be surprised to learn how bloody an editor’s job used to be, how even a slave could purchase a vicarius to carry out his duties and that early Greeks had their own ghost-busters with the apt title of psychopompus.
In addition to stand-alone profiles on callings, trades, and professions, Le?n offers numerous sidebar entries about actual people who performed these jobs, giving a human face to the ancient workplace. Combining wit and rich scholarship, Working IX to V is filled with anecdotes, insights, and little-known facts that will inform and amuse readers of all ages. For anyone captivated by the ancient past, Working IX to V brings a unique insight into the daily grind of the classical world. You may never look at your day-to-day work in the same way!

Arrived on time.......2007-09-15
I didn't have any issues with this vendor. The book was on time and in good condition.
Stunningly funny, erudite, and entertaining.......2007-08-17
I picked this book up because of the clever title, but it is a revelation. Leon takes what could be a very dry topic, and presents it in an entertaining, yet erudite way. The entries are well-researched and genuinely informative. Ancient history has been a lifelong interest, but I've learned much from this book. An overarching theme is how similar the ancients were to us, and it works. People are people across the centuries.
The interior illustrations are excellent, and the captions are often very funny. A bit bawdy at times, but nothing beyond PG-13.
Excellent puns too.
Leon's empathic heart is in the right place.
Fascinating reading.......2007-07-02
For those familiar with the work of Michael Foucault, this work is a little problematic. It basically picks up where Foucault's "The Birth of the Prison" and "The History of Sex" and his other curious titles leave off. Foucault's technique was to examine not the high-falutin literature of the past, or the documents of the haute bourgeoisie, but to look at ordinary systems and attitudes and uncover an archaeology of knowledge and a clearer map of ancient times from alternate perspectives. Because Foucault's technique was subversive, speculative, and academically suspect, many of his conclusions were controversial and his reputation binary. His taste for rough trade and bathhouses didn't help.
Enter Vicki Leon, who does a Studs Terkel ("Working") on the past.
Which is why this is such an excellent book. Leon strips away Foucault's tendency for obfuscation to sound profound (and his rather specialized taste for the louche and bizarre), and doesn't stoop to Terkel's socialist "history" as oppressor and inescapable condition.
Leon's prose is also better than journalists, which makes this a fun read. She doesn't do an exhaustive treatment of jobs in the past: tallow wright (someone who renders cowfat for candles and soap) and grease monkey (a usually samll boy sailor who greased oar gunnels) aren't here. But the ancient world's professions are on full display. My favourites included are: vicarious, nomenclator, fishmonger, purple seller (biblical!), sycophants (yikes), orgy planners, beast supplier, postal worker (now you'll know how going postal originated) and my favourite....psychopompus.
If there is any quibble here (and there really aren't any) Leon is a bit better at jobs typically held by females rather than males: the lives of soldiers, sailors, roughnecks, stevedores, etc. are relatively thin compared to vestal virgins.
This is an excellent, always interesting, highly readable, fun book in the vain of popular economics books sold in airports the world over. Leon is going to make a zillion dollars.
History at Ground Level.......2007-06-11
Vicki Leon's "Working IX to V" is not a history of wars and rulers. Instead, it looks at, as its subtitle proclaims, "Orgy Planners, Funeral Clowns, and Other Prized Professions of the Ancient World". In other words, it looks at the jobs performed by ancient Greeks and Roman to keep their world running on a day-to-day (or night-to-night) basis. It's a book made for great browsing if you are not in the mood or have the time available for a straight-through reading. The tone is light and breezy, but Ms. Leon's lively prose conveys a sense of authenticity.

Book Description
The Sarmatians - one of the many nomadic groups to emerge from the great Eurasian Steppe - crossed the Don in about the 3rd century BC to displace their western neighbours, the Scythians, in the lands north of the Black Sea. Later they burst into Asia Minor and Rome's Danube provinces, becoming famous for the prowess of their lance-armed cavalry - first as enemies, and later as allies of Rome. They influenced Rome's adoption of heavy armoured cavalry, and in Roman service they were even posted to Britain. Drawing upon a wide reading of Classical authors and of Russian archaeological publications, this fascinating study is the first major English language attempt to reconstruct their armour, equipment and tactics.
Customer Reviews:
Sarmatian Knights.......2007-03-31
This book was the first Osprey book I ever bought, but has inspired me to come back for, so far, about seventy more. It is an excellent source on this oft-overlooked warrior people, giving a summary of the history of the various tribes (Aorsi, Alans, Rhoxolani, etc.) and then going on to examine tactics, armor, lancing gear, blades, archery equipment, and lassos. Their roles in the 3rd-5th Century Roman army, as well as their possible role in the myth of King Arthur is also examined. The book also briefly looks at the unique Kingdom of the Bosporan Cimmerians, a Crimean people who combined the military thought of the Romans, Greeks, Gauls, Scythians, and Sarmatians. This is an excellent source on some of Rome's most fearsome 'barbarians'!
A Very good Source of information.......2005-06-23
This is a very good source of information as it gives you alot of detail without going into various documents or expensive books. The details on the pictures and weapons are excellent and that is why this is such a good book. A 5/5 for this one.
An excellent introduction and overview of Sarmatians.......2005-02-21
"The Sarmatians 600 BC - AD 450" by Richard Brzezinski and Mariusz Mielczarek is an excellent resource about Sarmatians. The book lives up to the typical Osprey "Men-at-Arms" series standards; it provides a brief overview, along with many photographs of paintings and sculptures, and contains color plates depicting various scenes. The book is great as it draws from many accounts of ancient texts that mention the Sarmatians.
The Sarmatians were a nomadic people that came out of Iran in ancient times. There were various groups of Sarmatians, such as the Alans, Iazyges, Roxolani, Siraces, and Aorsi. My interest in the Sarmatians stems from the 17th century Polish nobles belief that they were descended from the Sarmatians. They even made their armor look like what they thought Sarmatian armor was like. This book provided me with insight into this subject. This book brushes on this topic, but by no means focuses on it and is only a small fragment of the information contained within this book.
The authors state that for centuries it was believed that the Sarmatians were the ancestors of the Slavs, as they lived on the same land and as one appeared the other disappeared. Furthermore, the authors state:
"Linguists and archeologists have long dismissed this idea; but at the same time have turned up evidence of the seminal influence of the Sarmatians on Slav language, art and religion. Indeed, it is now accepted that the Sarmatians merged in with pre-Slavic populations. Both Serb and Croat seem to be Slavicised Alan tribal names. The myth of Sarmatian origins took a strong hold in Poland, where the Alans had a minor presence. (p.39)"
Dismissing this idea into the class of myth may be just a form of extreme skepticism. It seems contradictory that the idea is dismissed, yet evidence in support of it has grown. Perhaps, it just goes to show the ancient beliefs were accurate in some cases, and modern re-thinking only distorts us from the truth.
Personally, I found it interesting that swords with ring shaped pommels were popular among the Sarmatians from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, as my family coat of arms has a sword with a ring shaped pommel.
