Outstanding introduction to the field.......2007-06-28

Recently I needed to learn the principles of Bayesian networks quickly, so I bought three books: this one by Pearl, "Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" by Bishop, and "Bayesian Artificial Intelligence" by Korb and Nicholson. Each has a very different audience and different set of strengths.

The Bishop book would probably be a great text for a serious student with a year to spend learning the theory of machine learning. But I found it a bit too concise, with a bias towards an "algebraic" description rather than a "geometric" one (my preference). I wound up spending a lot of time trying to translate equations into mental pictures in order to grasp the concepts. Too much work, so I dropped this after a couple of days.

Next I tackled the Korb and Nicholson book. This one's aimed at the application engineer who wants to get a network up and running quickly, and is not too concerned about how it works. I've been in that position many times in my career, and have always welcomed books like this for giving me a quick start into a new field. But this time I needed to really understand how Bayesian networks worked, and for this the Korb and Nicholson book is not great. In the first 9 pages of chapter 3 they try to explain the belief propagation algorithm, but their hearts just weren't it in--I found their explanation to be unintelligible. (I suspect most readers just skim this to get to the applications.) So after several days of struggling and getting nowhere, I tossed this aside as well.

The Pearl book was the only left; I put it off to last since I was initially somewhat intimidated by it. After all, this is one of the books that kicked off the "Bayesian revolution," so I was fearing a foundational math book consisting of one dry theorem after another. Not so! Although you have to read 174 pages to get through the belief propagation algorithm for trees, this took far less time than reading the first 62 pages of Korb and Nicholson, which cover roughly the same ground. The reason: Pearl is a gifted teacher and writer. His explanations are a series of baby steps, leaving nothing out, never assuming the reader will make "obvious" inferences, and supplying motivation every step of the way. Although he doesn't have a lot of figures in the book, the ones he does have are excellent, and by the time I hit page 175, I had a clear picture in my head of not just how it all worked, but why it worked. In fact, after just two days of reading, I was able to implement the belief propagation algorithm in software in an afternoon (I tested the software with examples from the Korb and Nicholson book, so that book was ultimately useful). Pearl made the subject seem almost obvious. If you are looking for a book to help you get canned Bayesian software up and running for an application quickly, this is not it. But if you want to really understand how these things work, and don't have a lot of time available, I cannot imagine a better book than this.

Pearl's book is a classic in artificial intelligence. Many of his ideas are still being studied today.

To reiterate moussie99, Not so much.......2006-04-20

I've read the first half of this book twice now (once for a class, once to pass M.S. test). The book is terrible. There are virtually no examples to help you learn how to construct a Bayesian network. I'm serious. Virtually the only example is actually a homework question at the end of a chapter and the question is wrong!!! (there are dependcies in the table given for the joint distribution, but the acyclic graph shows them as independencies).

This book was written in defense of Bayesian Networks as a "Reasonable" graphical model. At the time, perhaps it was needed, but today we accept them as useful and move on unless we are trying to model medical diagnosis. For this reason the book is written with proofs where there should be examples (and perhaps references to an appendix). Please don't prove to me that Bayesian networks are reasonable, show me how they are useful!

To reiterate, you will learn how to create and use Bayesian networks from somewhere else, even if you buy this book.

Oh, and my FAVORITE example is the Prisoner's Paradox. He uses this example to show relationships that should be representable in a graphical model. But the whole point of the paradox is that humans are VERY bad at thinking in this manner. Though Pearl makes general claims as to the similarity between Bayesian Networks and the way humans think (doctors performing medical diagnosis is not a normal human task!), this example shows the opposite. It is called a paradox because it is unintuitive, weakening claims as to the likeness of Bayesian Networks to human thought.

Elegant Discussion On Probabilistic Reasoning And Uncertainty.......2005-12-13

Pearl's "Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems" is elegantly done seminal work on uncertainty, probabilistic reasoning and all things related inference. As the author says, "This book is a culmination of an investigation into the applicability of probabilistic methods to task requiring automated reasoning under uncertainty", it covers topics on all level i.e. basic ideas, technical and substantive discussions and advanced research. However, my impression of book's target audiences is researchers and readers with a advance understanding of these topics.

"Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems" provides very comprehensive and detailed discussion on topics like why uncertainty is important, probabilistic reasoning for query answering system, Markov and Bayesian networks etc; It goes beyond the text and into philosophical discussion as well, for instance it talks about what Bayesian rule's mathematical representation actually mean. The topic "Learning structures from data" is a good discussion of belief networks. As an advance text book, it's equipped with theorem proofs, exercises but not very many examples which disappoints. The book covers default logic very well; topics like semantics for default reasoning, casualty modularity and tree structures, evidential reasoning in taxonomic hierarchies, decision analysis, and autonomous propagation as a computational paradigm are some of the well discussed ones. I particularly enjoyed the Bayesian vs. Dempster-Shafer formulism, probabilistic treatment of the Yale shooting problem and dialogue between logicist and probablist, the concluding discussion.

I'd recommend this book as a secondary resource for advance researchers in the field of probability and uncertainty.

Not so much.......2003-04-09

I used this text in addtition to a few others for a course in probablistic reasoning (Bayes nets, etc.) and found that it was very unhelpful. The explanations were very poor and many parts were difficult to read. Also, there weren't very many examples and those that were provided were not very detailed. If you're looking for a text to learn probabilistic reasoning I would suggest trying a different book. Pearl's book could be useful as a 2nd or 3rd reference but not for the primary text. 2 thumbs down.

Unwanted childlessness affects approximately one in six couples worldwide. Although the exact proportion of the predominant cause of the problem remains controversial, according to the World Health Organization, in nearly 40 % of cases the cause can be attributed to the female, in 20 % to the male, in 25 % to both, and in 15 % the cause remains unknown. The intention of the present monograph is to shed more light on the regulation of Sertoli cell and germ cell differentiation. Involving knockout and transgenic mouse models, the authors focus on male factor infertility that might be related to altered maturation of Sertoli cells, male factor infertility that might be due to incorrect histone-to-protamine exchange in haploid spermatids, and progression of testicular germ cell cancer that might be favoured by an aberrant Sertoli cell germ cell communication.

Paranormal romances aren't my usual genre, but I couldn't resist this unusual twist on the Beauty and the Beast tale. It was a delightful story! All the characters were extremely likeable, even in their curmudgeonly states! The detailed descriptions of Idaho and Oregon were beautiful. I particularly love books that center their story around a restaurant. I found the part about the Fates to be a bit confusing and hard-to-follow, perhaps because I hadn't read the two earlier stories in this series first, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book one bit!

I was much too engrossed in the story here to count (as other reviewers apparently did) how many kisses were exchanged between the main characters. The [adult content] and romantic tension was always present and believable, and that's what I find most important.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I'm here online to order the rest. It's not often I come across something really new in romance; this book is the freshest twist on Beauty and the Beast I've come across.

I don't actually read romances. I picked this one up because of the "magic" aspect. What a fun read! I couldn't put it down and next thing I knew it was 3:00 in the morning. I wish I'd known it was the third of three - I'dve started at the beginning!!!!!

This books is cute, and funny, but not quite as good as the first two books in the series. I would have found a slightly less conventional ending, with the frog not turning into a prince, but still winning the princess, more emotionally satisfying, and truer to the two main characters. Still this was a fun read.

It is hard to call a book a real romance when the hero and heroine are hardly ever together, there are only a couple of very tame kisses, and the hero isn't in his real body except about 20 pages of the whole book. If you don't look at it as a romance but fantasy, it is more interesting. The main attempts at actual humor are with subcharacters from among the Mount Olympus Greek Gods. I found the hero's situation more sad than funny a lot of the time.

Understanding Omaha.......2007-04-05

I read the book several years ago, just prior to visiting the Normandy Beaches. Bought it to have my own copy and read it again. The book's great strength (drawback for some readers, maybe) is its huge volume of detail. It is thoroughly researched; written with clarity; tells the story fully. The human side of this Day In History is also illustrated in meaningful detail; descriptions of unbelievable heroism are numerous; only three Medals of Honor were awarded;many DSCs. Issue: General Cota should have received the Medal of Honor; saved many lives; inspired leadership. A really fine and exciting book.

A Great Book.......2007-04-03

I am not going to go on at length since there are already some well written reviews here. I just wanted to add my vote that this is a great book. I think it is the finest book on Omaha written, including Ryan's and Ambrose's. I also recommend Bernage's work for the graphics and photos.

A Great Description of Omaha Beach That Takes You There.......2007-03-27

This is a great "you are there" description of D-Day on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Joseph Balkoski has done an excellent job of presenting the official and personnel accounts of people who were there that longest day of the war. The descriptions by the veterans take you into the landing craft, onto the beach, and up and over the bluffs that overlooked the beach. His telling of the story dispels the usual belief that the soldiers were stuck on the beach all day and only got off the beach near the end of the day as depicted in the movie "The Longest Day".

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a real detailed story focused on this one beach of the D-Day invasion. I would really recommend it to someone who is a wargamer such as myself since reading the stories makes me want to recreate these small firefights as well as the overall battle. I am sure there are many people who feel that way.

Balkoski's style of telling history is very well done and he has done an excellent job of bringing the materials together so that others can follow in the footsteps of the brave men of that day.

I can't want to read Utah Beach!

Joseph Balkoski's book on Omaha Beach is a great historical resource like his book Utah Beach. Omaha Beach tells the story of when largely untested American troops assaulted the German army's Atlantic wall. This is a great read covering the events of the day almost minute by minute. It reads like a great documentary. This is not written in the format of a memoir. Balkoski relies mainly on primary sources such as after action reports, unit journals, and citations to create his blow by blow narrative. He includes the invasion's diplomatic and strategic context. Omaha Beach is the closest the modern reader can get to experiencing the Normandy landings firsthand.

Sprinkled throughout the battle account are the accounts of those in the battle. It is a classic. It is a must for any D-day library. It also included comprehensive lists of all Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross winners at Omaha Beach. It has: the Order of Battle, unit casualty list for the first twenty-four hours, unit organization of a 30man assault boat unit weapons, and equipment carried in the assault by a typical soldier, and a series of detailed maps allowing the reader unparalleled insight into the minute-by-minute combat on Omaha Beach.

Best ever Omaha Beach book!.......2006-12-03

I decided at first to write a long review of this book, but upon reading the other reviews here I trimmed my review to simply this...

I own and run a battlefield touring company in Normandy and have read many many books on the fighting on Omaha Beach on D-Day. There is no better book than this one, that's it it's absolutely the definitive book on the subject. The author has lived overlooking the beach, he's from Maryland - home of the 29th division and he has studied the units involved for thirty years. This book will never be bettered. I cannot sing its praises loudly enough.

Interesting biographies of very interesting people.......2001-08-12

The men and women of science are an interesting and varied group of people. Bound strongly by ability and occasionally also luck, their collective efforts have in the past and continue to dramatically change the world. In this volume, Asimov writes short biographies of the leading figures and places them in chronological order of their birth. This provides a unique perspective to the development of science as you can follow the development of the major ideas, from the original germ to the nearly complete theory.
The biographies are largely short, being merely a synopsis of the achievement of these great people. However, Asimov does capture the essence of who they were and what they accomplished. In my capacity as an editor, I occasionally need some background information about a historical figure, and this is the first resource I turn to.
