          Book Description

                  Book Description

From conch shells to lasers . harmonic oscillators, the timeless scientific phenomenon As intriguing to Galileo as they are to scientists today, harmonic oscillators have provided a simple and compelling paradigm for understanding the complexities that underlie some of nature's and mankind's most fascinating creations. From early string and wind instruments fashioned from bows and seashells to the intense precision of lasers, harmonic oscillators have existed in various forms, as objects of beauty and scientific use. And harmonic oscillation has endured as one of science's most fascinating concepts, key to understanding the physical universe and a linchpin in fields as diverse as mechanics, electromagnetics, electronics, optics, acoustics, and quantum mechanics. Complete with disk, Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators is a hands-on guide to understanding how harmonic oscillators function and the analytical systems used to describe them. Professionals and students in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and chemistry will gain insight in applying these analytical techniques to even more complex systems. With the help of spreadsheets ready to run on Microsoft Excel (or easily imported to Quattro Pro or Lotus 1-2-3), users will be able to thoroughly and easily examine concepts and questions, of considerable difficulty and breadth, without painstaking calculation. The software allows users to imagine, speculate, and ask "what if .?" and then instantly see the answer. You're not only able to instantly visualize results but also to interface with data acquisition boards to import real-world information. The graphic capability of the software allows you to view your work in color and watch new results blossom as you change parameters and initial conditions. Introduction to Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators is a practical, graphically enhanced excursion into the world of harmonic oscillators that lets the reader experience and understand their utility and unique contribution to scientific understanding. It also describes one of the enduring themes in scientific inquiry, begun in antiquity and with an as yet unimagined future.

Introduction To Classical and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators, Reviewed by Dave Fynn

It is physically impossible to shake a stick without becoming consciously aware, or indeed unconsciously aware, of the all pervasive presence of harmonic oscillators. In this fascinating treatment of the subject the author Sylvan C. Bloch, a professor at the University of South Florida, displays an exceptional understanding and a singular insight into the universal implications of these devices both from considerations of their obvious scientific value and as objects of beauty.

This publication reaches far beyond being a simple design aid, it is in itself an experience encouraging a thought process extending and stimulating the imagination thus providing a vehicle for greater scientific understanding.

The book comes complete with software which will run on a number of standard spreadsheets, Microsoft Excel, Quattro Pro, and Lotus 1-2-3 for example. This enables the user to interface with the subject, to question the consequence of certain variables and conditions, and to examine concepts of deep complexity receiving immediate results without being burdened with a mass of calculations.

My own reaction is, had this treatise been available during my student days it would probably have made me a better engineer. Thoroughly recommended as stimulating reading for any red blooded professional, engineer, or engineering student of electronics, electrical, or mechanical engineering.

The step by step derivation of differential equations is a jewel and so easy to follow. The software included delivers beautiful graphics and makes this complex subject easy to visualize and entertaining at the same time.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Are two in one better than one?.......2006-03-06

Ace Fantasy has packaged the MYTH series as collections of volumes where they package two of the stories in one book cover. In this particular instance this does not work at all as the two stories are so completely different and dissimilar that one wonders why they did it. The reason, of course, is that these two volumes happened to fall one after the other chronologically and so they ended up sharing the same cover.

The first book "Mything Persons" is classic Aahz and Skeeve. The zany story line has Aahz trying to apprehend some fugitives by cold cocking Skeeve and bursting into a world populated by vampires and werewolves. When he does not return, the rest of the gang goes in to rescue him and the normal mayhem ensues. Of course, the ending is typical with much hilarity and absolutely nonsensical events happening to end well. We are treated to all of the characters that have been following Skeeve in the past few books and get to meet some from the very first book who come back in a way that promises that they will become bigger parts in the future.

The second story is completely different. This one is really a serious reflective novel on the growth paths that adults take. At one time or another Skeeve, Aahz, Tananda, Massha, and Nunzion all reflect on what it means to grow up and how adults should behave towards one another. While there is a thin plot involving a preposterously complex card game and a character assassin hired to bring Skeeve down a notch, this is not in the same league as the previous five volumes. The humor is almost completely absent in a book that is turning rather serious. Even when the author tries to liven things up by introducing a bimbo companion to Skeeve by the name of Bunny, we find out that she is really a smart accountant who puts on the sex kitten act as a defensive mechanism!

So, if you are looking for vintage Asprin, the first volume will be to your liking while the second will drive you batty! I am wondering how the rest of the series shapes up as the second story here suggests a major departure from the norm and a completely different direction for the series to go in.

I will read the next volume (two-in-one set) just to see how it goes. I suggest you come along to, as the journet might be fun, or might be serious....

3 out of 5 stars Five stars for Mything Persons, ONE star for LMM.......2005-06-04

This was the point at which the Myth series began to go downhill, largely due to Asprin's desire to begin telling stories about Skeeve's development as a person instead of his wacky adventures. Don't get me wrong -- I love characters who grow and change -- but they should do so because of their experiences, not because the author manipulates them into continual introspection.

In Mything Persons, the last good book in the series, Skeeve discovers that someone's come into his house and then taken it on the lam out the back door. This is a very big deal, because Skeeve's house is built on a dimensional boundary -- whoever went through that door disappeared into a completely unexplored world. Upon learning that the intruders are wanted fugitives, Aahz steps through the door to find them ... and never comes back. It's up to Skeeve, Guido, and Massha to enter this world, rescue Aahz and find the fugitives.

Mything Persons is a classic Aahz-and-Skeeve adventure, where we see Skeeve operating not merely on his own but as a real leader. The alien dimension is nicely realized and evocative, and there are some nifty subplots about Skeeve's discovery of the fugitives' identity.

In Little Myth Marker, Skeeve gets peer-pressured into playing Dragon Poker -- an absurdly complex game whose rules he is clueless about -- and ends up winning the marker of a down-and-out player, said marker represented by the player's small daughter. At the same time, Don Bruce has decided that Skeeve doesn't fit the profile of a Mob boss because he doesn't have a moll, so he sends over a choice bimbo to fill the role. Worst of all, a bunch of rival magicians jealous of Skeeve's success hire the Ax, the dimensions' greatest Character Assassin, to ruin his reputation.

While there's some comedy potential in this setup, it's never realized. Instead, we get Aahz ruminating on parenthood, Nunzio talking about his odd but remarkably uninteresting past, Massha whining about being unappreciated and Skeeve delivering lectures on the battle of the sexes. Over and over, rather than dealing with their problems, the Myth crew talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.

Sadly, this book ended up being the model for the rest of the series. The next two books from Skeeve's viewpoint would consist of a brief, boring "adventure" followed by an entire chapter of Skeeve reflecting on how it changed his worldview. The only decent book after this one is MYTH Inc. in Action, and it's not good enough to justify the agony of plowing through the two books before it.

5 out of 5 stars another fine myth.......2003-12-20

Book five has Skeeve wandering around in searching for Aahz in a dimension where magic doesn't work and humans are the monsters. It's hilarious--a world of vampires and werewolves.
Little Myth Marker brings in Markie, who adds a new level of hilarity to the gang. And Skeeve goes into his high stakes Dragon Poker. Marvelous.

2 out of 5 stars This is where the series really gets tired.......2002-12-04

I read these books about 15 years ago in high school and recently picked them up looking for some light reading. The first two volumes of double Myth tales were enjoyable enough, but by the time I got to this collection, Asprin's style of writing was beginning to grow somewhat annoying. He goes way overboard providing explanation for the characters attitude and motivation and turns them all into well mannered polite caring do-gooders who never break a promise and always turn their enemies into new best friends. It gets old really quick.

Another major problem with the books at this point is the fact that it takes so long to establish the plot and to rope in all the supporting characters that the resolutioins seem anti-climactic at best. The second book in this collection is a bad offender in this respect as most of the book is spent with no action taking place and lots and lots of boring exposition on why everyone is so good at giving advice and helping to be a good team member. Also, the big mystery character is pretty non-mysterious and I saw the outcome of the thin plot coming a mile away.

All in all, I can't say I recommend this collection of Myth stories unless you really really really enjoyed the first two. I won't be picking up the latter installations unless I really can't find anything else to read.

In 1954, Shelby Foote was a young novelist with a contract to write a short history of the Civil War. It soon became clear, however, that he had undertaken a long-term project. Twenty years later Foote finally completed his massive and essential trilogy on the War Between the States. His three books are prose masterpieces with lively characterizations and gripping action. Although Foote never sacrifices the truth of what happened to his penchant for artistry, his skills as a novelist serve him well. Reading all three of these books will take some time, but they are worth the investment--especially if you, like Foote, have a touch of sympathy for the South's lost cause.

Shelby Foote knows his stuff. Over 800 pages of exciting Civil War action, from the secession crisis of early 1861 to the inauguration of Mississippian Senator Jefferson Davis as President of the Confederate States. From Yankee disaster at First Manassas to Robert E. Lee's embarrassing debut in western Virginia. From riverboat actions on the Mississippi and its tributaries, to George McClellan's snail-like movement up the York-James Peninsula toward Richmond. And on and on, until October 1862, when the Confederacy retreats from failed invasions of Kentucky and Maryland.

As I said, Foote knows what he is writing about. He has plenty of stories to tell about the first two years of the Civil War, and he'll keep the reader busy with his storytelling. Along with James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom and Bruce Catton's work on the Army of the Potomac, Foote's Civil War Narrative belongs on the shelf of every Civil War enthusiast, this volume as well as the other two.

I could write a very long and boring review about this book but i won't. This series of books is one of the best about the war. It doesn't get bogged down in troop movements but it gives the reader an excellent overview of any particular battle. It shifts from theater to theater with plenty of adventure on all pages. This is not just an account of the Civil War, it is an account of all the aspects that make us who we are today. Enjoy not only the best retelling of The American Civil War but also one of the best American books of all time.

As military / political narratives go, this book is first rate. Foote explains the battles as well in a comprehensible way (something that many military history books don't do). The book is interesting and moves along (something that most 800 page books don't do either). Overall, it is a vivid picture of the people and the history.

That being said, here is my critique: reading this book is a major undertaking. The book is 800 pages and is only the first book in a triology. According to Amazon, the entire triology is about 3000 pages. While I do not consider myself a civil war buff, I guess I am one now -- at least for a third of the war. While well written, its not the kind of prose that you can race through. This is a major reading commitment.

A reading marathon like this raises a unique issue. Noone wants to read 3000 pages and conclude they could have spent their time better. While I have labored through inaccurate and ridiculous history books, these books were a lot shorter and I knew they were inaccurate / ridiculous when I read them. Worrisome to me, two reviewers say the book is inaccurate and I should read McPherson. I don't take that to heart though; reviewers of McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom say you should read Foote.

Overall, a great book and recommended. Now I'm off {sigh} to read volume II.

Mr. Foote has done one of the best outlines of the American Civil War period. If one wants to read a book that is just chocked full of interesting incidents and characters. Then one needs go no further then these 3 massive tomes. Just don't be put off by their massive size, it is well worth the time.
While Bruce Catton is a good rivial, he is a Yankee. Mr. Foote is a true son of the South and so you get a much needed Southern View point that is missing in most of the current popular books on this turning point of our nations history.

4 out of 5 stars How the Discovery of the New World Changed the Old.......2003-02-05

Anthony Pagden's 1993 book, "European Encounters with the New World," is a socio-cultural historical study of the ways and means by which the 'discovery' of the New World left indelible impressions upon the Old World. The book revolves around European attempts from Columbus in 1492, to Alexander von Humboldt, in 1799, to understand what the discovery meant - from how Europeans thought about the New World itself, its original inhabitants, and whether any approach could sufficiently provide them with an understanding of themselves in light of the discovery. Concerned with the themes of 'newness,' 'authority,' and the seeming impasse of 'cultural incommensurability,' Pagden very clearly lays out the stakes for a wide range of disparate, often conflicting European ideas about what America meant in the Early Modern Period. Pagden's approach was at once comfortable to me - he works almost exclusively with the products of cultural production - letters, histories, philosophy, dialogues, and fiction. Subtly, Pagden as a historian seems to dispense with a radical dependence on statistics and data, in favor of a history of representation. One strength of the book is that it works, simultaneously, as informed and interesting literary criticism and as a cultural and intellectual history.

Chapter 1 takes on the history of European encounters with the New World at the level of the processes by which Europeans actually came into contact with the New World. From Columbus through Humboldt, Pagden argues, a 'principle of attachment' governed these encounters. In order for a traveller, migrant, colonist (and other varieties all finely delineated) to come to grips with the alienness of the new world - he first attempts a kind of mental transference, mapping the startlingly new with familiar forms, from rocks to native people. This is the attempt, which haunts Early Modern Europe, of trying to make the incommensurable commensurable with European experience and epistemology, which comes out of an explicit history of textual interpretation. Beyond the individual experience of America, the next problem, as Pagden sees it, is how to relate these wholly unique experiences to Europeans in Europe. In light of the tradition of textual interpretation, which depended upon the Bible, the Church Fathers, and finally the Ancients - all of whom the very concept of a 'new' continent is beyond conception - how does a person legitimize and authenticate his experience and make it legible? Using the writings of contemporary Spanish writers and missionaries, principally Las Casas and Oviedo, Pagden argues that a new tradition of 'autopsy,' which he defines as appeal to the authority of the eyewitness. In line with recent developments in philosophy, the time was ripe for such a literature in which a named narrator claimed the truth of his observations. However, according to Pagden, as the Early Modern Period continued, the focus on observational authority became increasingly dependent on concomitant claims to objectivity.

Chapter 3 deals with the reckoning which the discovery of the New World brought to bear on religious and intellectual history, and how the intellectual establishment coped and adapted to the assault on the integrity of its big three - the Bible, Chruch Fathers, and Ancients. Pagden also takes up the developing mythos surrounding Christopher Columbus - they way that images of Columbus as a 'culture-hero' shift and change from Columbus' own time through Humboldt's appropriation of him. Chapter 4 finds Pagden dealing with the linguistic encounters between the Old and New Worlds - the ways in which European languages found difficulties relating their authority, political and religious to natives and their own languages. It also takes up issues of temporality - how the Old World envisioned its investment in the New World as providing a peek into some kind of common human history. Chapter 5, centering around Diderot's "Supplement to Bougainville's Voyage," Humboldt's "Kosmos," and the writings of Herder examines the way in which Enlightenment and early Romantic writers represents the difficulties inherent in crossing into New World spaces. 18th century debates range from vehement anti-colonialist discourse, to absolute incommensurability, to the impossibility of a universal good, to Humboldt's belief that he was the objective explorer that the European imagination had been awaiting since Columbus.

Dealing only briefly with developments in critical theory over the past 20 or so years prior to 1993, including post-colonial studies, Pagden acknolwedges the use of studies which claim the 'other' is always a construction. Similar omissions, acknowledged or not, include the absence of African slaves, and sustained emphasis on commercial and religious discourses from his cultural history. On the whole though, Pagden's clear writing style and deep engagement with his cultural source materials, spanning different languages and historical moments is impressive, informative, and highly entertaining.

In the US. the NRC is probably the best qualified to assess where supercomputing is going. The book offers a vendor neutral survey. One that is also largely country neutral. The latest status of various hardware efforts is described. For vector computing, massive clustering, and other approaches.

The latter also includes the ongoing competition between building a supercomputer out of common off the shelf components (COTS), or via designing dedicated hardware. You might wonder at the continued viability of the latter, as design limits keep getting pushed back. Surely a point of diminishing returns will be reached?
