Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-27
This book is an instant hit. This is my youngest son's second copy because he loved the first to pieces. He never gets tired of this book.
LONG.......2007-05-15
My child loves Scooby-doo but if you're buying this book for a toddler be prepared to read the stories for a long time. They're not as short as typical book, rather very long. Other than how long the book is we like it. Who doesnt like Scooby-doo?!?!?
Scoobie Doobie Doo!.......2006-08-19
My 5 year old boy just loves this book, he either wants to leaf through the pages or have a story read from it every night. Of course all the stories follow the same scooby-doo formula, but for kids that's probably a reassuring thing, the monsters always end up bad guys that get caught by the heroes.
Scooby Doo Does it Again.......2006-05-09
This is a wonderful collection of eight Scooby Doo and the gang mystery stories that my two young daughters just love. The stories are good, the pictures are cute and the book is excellent value for money.
Recommended for all Scooby-Doo fans and mystery lovers, both the young and young at heart.
The Kids Love It!.......2006-03-12
My 5-year-old and 3-year-old boys have recently discovered Scooby Doo. As soon as they fall in love with any character or series I immediately try to find the books that accompany them to encourage their imaginations and and hopefully an enjoyment of reading. My 3-year-old now sleeps with this book and looks at it everynight. These stories aren't the classic ones my husband and I watched in the 70's, but newer stories closer to the "What's New Scooby Doo?" series, plus a few Scooby Doo movies from the 90's. These stories are full-fledged stories - not shortened "beginner" stories and they totally keep my kids' attention. They just love the stories and like to guess who the villian might be. If your kids like Scooby Doo then they will definitely like this book.

Book Description
From A to Z, delve into Cape Cod's vernacular, so you too can speak like "an old salt". George Higgins is an eleventh generation Cape Codder or "Easthammer" who has researched and collected words peculiar to Cape Cod along with many indigenous expressions. To these, he has added his own unique comments to create this "salty dictionary". Sprinkled throughout How To Speak Like A Cape Codder are illustrations contributed by Gordon W. Brooks for a humorous look at life on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In the words of an "Old Salt" . . . Ayup: An affirmative reply, roughly the equivalent of "yes." It may even replace "I do" as a legal response in a marriage ceremony. It also conveys to trained ears, "I'm listening to you, but I may not agree with you." Down in Maine, "AYUP" becomes "AYUH." Canal: The only truly significant canal, it separates Cape Cod from what remains of the United States to the west. There are, to be sure, other canals, such as Panama, Suez, Erie, et cetera, but when prefaced by "The," it can apply to but one body of water - The Cape Cod Canal. It is crossed by a native Cape Codder going west only with the greatest reluctance and sacrifice. Such a trip seems designed for the purpose of the native's learning just how much The Cape means to him. This being the case, he drives over The Canal eastward with great relief. Cape Codder:
1. A native (q.v.)
2. A resident, which definition is unacceptable to number one
3. An individual who lives on Cape Cod seasonally
4. Any person who loves Cape Cod, after at least two visits and grasp the truth that all Americans are divided into two classes: those who are Cape Codders; and those who wish they were

Dream Theater and the Mind of Don Ray Jr........2001-11-18
When I first opened the book, I was lost within the pages immediately. I found myself turning the pages quickly, but didn't know if this was a good reaction. I was searching for truth and knowledge about infinity. Since the band, Dream Theater, is one of my favorites, I thought this book had to be great! I was disappointed by the lack of aesthetics that would be expected from a book like this. The statement, "And we all die young" (oh, was that THIS book?) was kinda biased. I didn't really get what I was searching for from this book. Although, I must say it was very well written, but I think a bit more time and effort could have been added to the content. It should contain more info about how to obtain 'infinity'!
I was left feeling empty and numb after finishing the book.
Maybe that was the goal of the writers--to leave me with a sense of numbness, which equals 'Infinity'. Well done.
Something for the newer guitarists.......2000-06-23
Great album and even better TAB book. This was edited by John Petrucci, so what's in this book is what he plays and how he plays it. This album has less of the 64-th note solos for 20 pages, so there is a lot more us learning guitarists can play with. A definite plus
Guitar Transcriptions and Notation for DT's latest album.......1999-01-20
A must have for any DT fan that has some talent and ambition. This album is a bit more 'practical' for younger musicians wanting to learn a bit more on Petrucci's style and licks. The guitar parts are somewhat toned down and less 'showy' than those on previous DT albums, but the songs presented here are WELL worth the book.

Most chapters are very good. My interest is painting--I found that several chapters were just excellent instruction and tips-others were OK. Worth the purchase price to me...
Digital Collage and Painting: Using Photoshop and Painter to Create Fine Art.......2006-11-25
This book was like reading a great novel, I couldn't put it down! The inspiration was excellent. The incorrect assumption of some that "digital" means "computer generated" is debunked in this excellent work which has lots of beautiful examples of many kinds of digital art (not just collage). There are lots of step by step tutorials that are helpful and tips for using the tools of PS and Painter to their best advantage.
It is not a beginners book however as Bloom assumes that the reader is familiar with PS and Painter. Still this might be the work that makes one REALLY want to do the work needed to become proficient in these programs.
Loved it more than any other work on this subject and I already have a shelf full!!!

Buyer Beware.......2006-11-11
Ok, firstly if you want a hands-on plenty of action book stay away from this one. Sure you get to see how other artist have created their work but if you read carefully there are gaps between getting from one stage to the next in some cases. Also a MAJOR dissapointment is you get no images to play with so you can attempt to emulate what the artist is doing as you read. Using the same techniques on different images can obviously give you totally different results.
There is a small hands-on section (26 pages) at the back where you have to download the images to work with. Come on guys how about a CD..? You also have to download a total of 49 files off the web if you want all of them AND they are all largish TIFFS instead of jpgs so be prepared for a long download session.
Basically if you want to be a digital vouyer and have a perve at how others do it without having fun yourself buy this book. If you want to get down and dirty and have heaps of fun then look elswhere. I have read many good PS and Painter books but for me this is not one of them. I might add I am a very experienced PS user and more than a fair Painter user and while the author certainly knows her stuff the book for me is a major letdown and certainly not for a new user looking for a good start to take them to an intermediate level.
Bridging the Digital Disciplines.......2006-10-07
Artists create by combining and extracting elements, often employing diverse techniques, to express ideas. Sue Bloom's new book brings her background as a teacher and digital artist and painter to the reader by showing how different artistic methods can be combined to create a work richer than any single medium alone could provide. She does this, not just by describing her own work, but by inviting 21 other major digital artists to share their eyes and techniques. Of course, she provides some excellent chapters on the "basics" of digital creation in Photoshop and Painter, but her book's unique strength, I think, lies in going beyond all of the usual "How to" books. It is a book which bridges these different digital disciplines. It covers collage and panorama creation, along with artistic tools in Photoshop and Painter while at the same time has a large section on "Artistic Considerations" (which includes "Experimentation" ideas). Bloom's first sentence begins with the question: "Where does that kernel of inspiration come from?" She brings us many tools to use. Along the way, she offers inspiring and thoughtful quotations from artists throughout history. I took great comfort from her quote from Emerson that "Every artist was first an amateur." An inspiring and truly unique book. BRAVO.
A great book for learning new techniques and skills.......2006-08-26
This is a great book for the curious and creative artist who wants to use Photoshop and Painter as their tools for expression. The author provides plenty of information, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to help the reader go through the process and create his/her images. The book is not an introduction to basic Photoshop or Painter. The book is for the artist who wants to improve his techniques and learn new skills using these programs. You can practice, and apply the new skills and I'm sure that you will notice immediately the improvement on your technical skills.
The chapters on Collage are excellent and the author provides a step-by-step guide in the creative process of a diversity of images. She inspires you to use the newly learned techniques to create stunning collages. The chapter devoted to creating panoramic images is superb. You will enjoy this chapter because you can use any digital camera to create great panoramas and you don't need to invest in expensive equipment.
You will love the chapter on filters; you can practice and create new versions of some of your favorite old images. The chapter on Essential Photoshop and Painter techniques is a must for everyone who wants to be proficient with the tools of both programs. This chapter has a step-by-step approach to the method and you'll have plenty of illustrations and instructions to learn how to master the tools. The book provides five projects for you to practice some of your newly acquired skills. I'm sure that this book will help you find inspiration and will motivate you to go out and create great images with this wonderful programs. This book is a must in the library of every photographer and artists who uses digital technology.

As Haun points out, a collage combines several different elements and materials, and a montage combines several integrated photos. Photoshop Collage Techniques is an excellent guide to creating both types of artwork in Photoshop 4.0 for Windows and Macintosh. This four-color book explains smart ways to use Adobe's color options, layers, and masking features to create interesting compositions.
Much of the advice relates to creating vignettes, fractured effects, shadows, textures, and special effects. There's also a useful chapter on Web graphics and a discussion of copyright issues to be aware of when acquiring artwork for your collages. The chapter, "The Visual Clues of Photomontage," discusses design concepts such as consistent lighting, color balance, and atmospheric and linear perspective. This is an outstanding book for Photoshop users who are ready to move on to sophisticated collages and similar compositions.
Book Description
Digital collages and montages are two of the most popular digital art techniques being used today. Photoshop Collage Techniques is the first book of its kind to reveal the techniques behind the creation of a series of montages and collages. The visually appealing 4-color format will offer inspiration to the graphic artist.

I knew him when..........2001-09-26
Greg Haun is a master of Photoshop special effects techniques.
I was fortunate enough to take several of his classes at the Pacific Northwest College of Art here in Portland
back in '94 and '95 when 3.0 Photoshop was just out!
Greg always showed personal interest in what you were doing.
Greg is a professional among professionals, yet you would never know his level of expertise unless you asked him point blank! He was a very humble guy and believed you could learn techniques from even a novice.
Because of those early years of study, I recently achieved my expert certification in Photoshop. I doubt that I could have done it had I not had the advantage of Greg's tutelage.
He made a difference in my life. I can't thank him enough...
This book is a must for the professional Photoshop user.
Greg Haun is one of the best around!.......2000-06-16
I was fortunate to take several classes from Greg during the early 90s when he still taught at the Pacific NW College of Art. He was very patient, very knowledgeable and a great guy. He always made time for you and always had an answer. This book is invaluable for Photoshop students of all levels! Buy it!

a "must-read," if you want to fine-tune photoshop knowledge.......2000-04-12
This is one of the best "how-to" books on computer imaging that I ever read. Each example is complete in itself -- they can really hold my interet throughout. The steps cross-reference accompanying pictures precisely. Everything is Thoroughly and methodically laid out -- no missing pieces or glibbed over details to stump readers.
A "Must Have" Book.......2000-01-23
As a certificate program graphic design student, I found this to be one of the best books on Photoshop, even though it was written prior to the new software versions. It is well-edited, and explains masking, layering, and blending images clearly and concisely with very helpful screenshots of what you need to do.
You can learn to master masks in Photoshop.......1998-08-23
This book really allowed me to learn masking in Photoshop. The step-by-step instructions allow you to follow the descriptions on your computer and see the results. It is rare to find a great book in Photoshop that teaches you so much. I would recommend this book to anyone who seeks to understand how to do collages using the mask technology in Photoshop. You won't regret buying this book at all. I can only wish there is the same kind of book in Illustrator and Painter and all the other graphics programs I use so that I can have a better understanding of the full special functions that are embedded in each of those applications.

Gripping, on-the-ground reportage of Special Operations soldiers struggling to rebuild a shattered neighborhood in Baghdad
The U.S. Army Civil Affairs Corps has a unique role within the modern military: these elite, highly trained soldiers are sent to combat zones after the primary fighting has ended to help rebuild war-ravaged regions. Working among the local population in seven- member teams, unprotected by other US forces, they work to restore power grids and sewer lines, get hospitals and schools up and running, and bring order to devastated lands while winning the hearts and minds of a conquered people. Today, these unheralded Civil Affairs soldiers are being tested as never before in the streets and villages of IraqÂwhere the future of the nation could be decided by whether or not they succeed.
In Waging Peace, veteran war correspondent Rob Schultheis takes you into West Baghdad with Civil Affairs Team A-13 as they face death threats, ambushes, and roadside bombs while struggling to revitalize a neighborhood scarred by battle and three decades of corruption and neglect under Saddam HusseinÂ's tyrannical rule. Along the way he brings to life the unforgettable men and women of CAT-A13: a former Peace Corps volunteer whose taste for the exotic local cuisine leads to surprising alliances with the local shopkeepers; a southern California surfer girl turned language specialist who helps launch an Islamic womenÂ's center; and a crusty ex-Marine Corps sniper whose irascible exterior masks a devotion to the suffering children of Baghdad. And leading the team is ex-Green Beret Major Mark Clark, who is equally deft at outwitting insurgents and battling bureaucrats to help the local Iraqis rebuild their lives and ensure his soldiers made it home safely when the mission is complete.
A rare and poignant portrait of what is really happening in Iraq based on an unprecedented six months of intense reporting, Waging Peace finds the street- level reality of todayÂ's Baghdad that is too often hidden beneath the headlines and sound bites.
Customer Reviews:
Hey! Has anyone payed attention to the news about Iraq lately?.......2007-01-18
This book came out before people generally understood the nation building aspect of the U.S. mission in Iraq so I think it's gotten missed. I think people should see this in the newstands and book stores again like it was a new release because where people weren't ready for this information in 2005, I think they are now in 2007 as the Bush admin talks more now about nation building and moves away from talk about conquest.
Excellent book, excellent illustration of the issues we are FINALLY seeing in the main stream news about Iraq.
The story about the other 75% of the effort .......2005-10-07
Our invasion of Iraq was part of an effort to bring stability and democracy to the region, to build an area where terrorists could not train or get support, where people solved their problems through talking it out. This is going to require good governments and strong economies -- and to have those Iraq will need an infrastructure.
Waging Peace relates the story of a small team of Army soldiers who carry a big burden in their operating area: restore water, sewer, schools, electricity and trash pick-up. Plus, build better relations with the government, the mosques, and the police. Oh, yeah, and the gun slingers are not going to give you much security, if any.
Especially right after the invasion, most of our effort in rebuilding Iraq came from Army Civil Affairs -- before the State Department and International Agencies really got started on the big projects. These Civil Affairs teams were critical to the impression that the Iraqis had of us.
Rob Schultheis does a great job of telling the story of one small team. Thing is, he could write two or three more books on the same subject and they would be different -- because each team and each neighborhood is so different. This team was a great one and their story is interesting. Major Clark and Sergeant Paul are true heroes to Iraqis and Americans.
GREAT BOOK!!.......2005-09-04
Okay, so i am in the book, but I can still remain objective. Most military books I have read deal with specific combat operations or tactics as that seems to be what people expect when they think of the military. Like going to go and blow up a bridge or something.
There are a lot of people in the military and most of those that serve have jobs other than combat operations. It is interesting to read about a military job that specifically does not use combat operations in a hostile military environment to acheive military goals. Like going to go and repair a bridge or something.
Need more information on Civil Affairs units.......2005-09-01
This is a great book. It tells the story from a Civil Affairs Team perspective, which many civilians don't even know exist and how they interact amongst themselves and the manuever Battalions they support. Unfortunately Rob was only able to concentrate on one of the Battalion's teams. There were, at times, over 10+ teams spread throughout Iraq doing similar missions which he did not have a chance to visit (one person can only do so much). I have to admit I am biased since I was part of the 425th Civil Affairs Battalion in Iraq and got to see "Writer Rob" quite a bit in theater. He is an incredibly interesting person and I was fortunate to get to know him. Look for more Civil Affairs stories from him because I think he is headed back over to Iraq or Afghanistan in the near future.
UPDATE: SSG PAUL WAS KIA IN KABUL ON 8 SEP 06. HE WAS PART OF OF THE 425TH CA IN IRAQ AND VOLUNTEERED FOR A SECOND TOUR WITH ANOTHER UNIT IN AFGHANISTAN. GOD BLESS SSG PAUL.
The Department of Defense announced the death of two soldiers, who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died in Kabul, Afghanistan, on September 8, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV. Both soldiers were assigned to the Army Reserve's 405th Civil Affairs Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C. Killed were: Sgt. 1st Class Merideth L. Howard, 52, of Alameda, California and Staff Sgt. Robert J. Paul, 43, of The Dalles, Oregon.
As Oregonians, we take the death of each of our soldiers quite personally. As we bid farewell to another, it is important to remember the man he was and the family he left behind.
Staff Sgt Robert J Paul, an Army Reservist, was assigned to the 364th Civil Affairs Brigade, HHC, based in Portland, Oregon. These units serve as the main liaison between the military and the civilian populations of the country where the military is operating.
SSG Paul was originally from Hammond, Indiana. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya from 1987-1989. He earned a Master's Degree in Urban Planning and Economic Development in 1995 from the University of Maryland. He joined the Army Reserve in April 1997. In 1998, He began working for the City of The Dalles, Oregon as an associate planner and became the senior planner. In 2001, he joined the Wasco County Planning Department as the senior land-use planner.
SSG Paul was a great lover of the wilderness and an avid kayaker. "Bob loved this area so much. He moved out here because he loved the west, he loved Oregon, and he loved the gorge (the Columbia River Gorge). He was very much into hiking and trailrunning and whitewater kayaking, all the outdoor experience," said Todd Cornett, Planning director.
In early 2004, SSG Paul was called to active duty and sent to Iraq to help build infrastructure, focusing on urban planning. He was deployed to Afghanistan in Spring of 2006. While in Iraq, he wrote, "It was pretty obvious what was broken and rundown. Saddam did absolutely no maintenance to his cities. Everything was broken or about to break. I had expected to do a lot of repair from military actions. Not at all. Those buildings were, for the most part, destroyed. I was performing maintenance and repair on systems that were not maintained for decades. They were also poorly designed. Naturally, I worked with community groups and the like to get projects aimed at what civilians wanted most rather than what I thought they should want most."
In a statement released by the Army, his family said, "Bob was the kind of guy, who if called for duty, would serve. he never turned down an opportunity because he always wanted to make a difference in everything he did -- the Peace Corps, the Army, his civilian job and, most importantly, his family and friends."
SSG Robert Paul is survived by his daughter, Ilena; mother and father, Esther and Sheldon; and sisters, Monica and Debra.
As we say farewell and God Speed to SSG Robert Paul, we value what he sacrificed for us and what he gave to so many while he was here.
Best book on post-invasion Iraq so far.......2005-08-19
This is a great book that gives you the feel of being in body armor and kevlar when it is 120 degrees outside with no shade, and you are in a humvee with the adrenaline pumping. This is a very balanced book with no axe to grind, just a story to tell. I really admire the author and this book. What a great contribution ! If you read one book on post-war Iraq, this should be it.
Book Description
Equipped with reliable maps and instruments for open-ocean navigation and highly seaworthy, three-masted, cannon-armed ships, Portugal dominated the Atlantic trade routes--until the diffusion of Portuguese technologies to wealthier polities made Holland the eventual successor, owing to its geographic position and its immense commercial fleet. It is precisely this interplay of technology and geography, argues Peter J. Hugill, that has guided the evolution of the modern global capitalistic system. Tracing the relationship between technology and economy over the past 550 years, Hugill finds that the nations that developed and marketed new technologies best were the nations that rose to world power, while those that held onto outdated technologies fell behind. Moreover, he argues, major changes in transportation and communication technologies actually constituted the moments of transformation from one world economy to another.

So much for classical Greek culture.......2005-07-15
Ivins uses this brief book to express his regard for classical Greece's culture, art, and contribution to the last two millennia of Western culture.
That regard is very low. He first starts by debunking their ideas of perspective. It's a brief task because, as he demonstrates clearly, they had nothing we could identify by that name. Instead of arranging figures according to the logic of sight, Ivins argues that Greek art arranged figures according to a `tactile' perspective, as if they were placed for easy reach rather than easy visual interpretation. He also dismisses the classical Greek sense of composition, on the ground that there was none. Figures were simply placed, without regard for their relationship to a time sequence, to a landscape, or to each other. He uses, as example, the battle friezes of Bassae, which were dismantled without noting their relationships to each other. At least six guesses at their arrangement, based on content, were in turn declared to be `definitive.' The question of their proper order was only resolved when mounting marks on the backs were matched to the holes in the walls from which they had been detached - with no regard to the pictures themselves.
The rest of the book argues likewise against the importance of classical Greek science, philosophy, and even Aristotelian logic (or illogic). Along the way, Ivins throws a number of barbs at the so-called scholars of ancient Greek culture, including those who argue the relative merits of different works that no longer existed even at the time of the earliest known commentary on them.
This brief book (or sustained essay) is a wonderful contrarian work by a man of inarguable qualification. He was director of prints for many years, in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, well trained in art but independent of traditional scholarship. It's great by itself, or as a foil to your favorite snob of the classics - enjoy!
