Customer Reviews:
very helpful!.......2005-03-03
I borrowed a copy of this book from someone who got an early realease. but i will buy it when it comes out.
Awesome! this book is great.
If oyu are not very familiar with C, back off, as this is a coders book.
But if you want to fight spam, this book has a ton of good info.
Programmer's Book.......2005-02-20
This is a programmer's book. It's heavy on C code, and if you can't at least read C, a lot of this isn't going to mean much to you. However, it does have a lot of general information that is of interest to anyone, and it could be helpful in unmdertstanding how someone else's milter works and how to modify it, etc.
I enjoyed it, but I like code heavy books - you may not.
There's a surprising amount of detail here; even getting into how to decode mime, and advice on user friendliness. I was a bit amused that they gave advice on how to attract spam to test milters; I don't think too many of us have any shortage of spam nowadays.
Good Even if You're Not Using Sendmail.......2005-02-09
As the title says, the bulk of this book is on working with spam on the sendmail software package. If you are using sendmail, there is no question that this is the book for you.
The strange thing is, that there is so much information on spam contained in this book that I'd recommend it even if you are using some other software package. The general discussion on spam, its history, its impact on the industry and on individuals, and especially on it's techniques of spammers.
I particularly enjoyed his philosophy of setting up a Bait Machine just to collect inbound spam. He then began developing techniques to stop the spam that was coming to the bait machine. Great concept.
very good spam descriptions.......2005-02-05
In the ongoing struggle against spam, adding filters to sendmail is a vital ability. Sendmail is probably the most common mail transfer agent on the Internet. The book describes how the latest sendmail supports a Milter interface. So that you, as a sysadmin or programmer, can write a program, usually in C, that implements a filter of your choice.
There has been various documentation on how to do this. Often scattered throughout the Web, and at various levels of competence and detail. But finally here, we have an entire book devoted to comprehensively explaining Milter.
It should be said that the authors deliberately don't go into details of what filters you might write. That is an open ended topic which is properly your remit, not theirs.
But as a bonus, there is a superb chapter on spam. It concisely goes into explaining techniques spammers use to obfuscate their mail. You can find out why blocking spam on the basis of checking subjects is essentially useless, for example. The chapter describes methods that other books on spam rarely go into. Actually, even if you have no intention of using Milter, you may want to consider the book for this chapter alone.

Urban air pollution is a matter of increasing concern in many of the newly independent states (NIS). This study has reviewed the current status of three principal areas closely linked to urban air quality management - air quality monitoring, vehicle emissions abatement, and fuel quality - with a view to making recommendations for the next decade. It assesses the current status of air quality, current and future vehicle fleet characteristics and their fuel requirements, the impact of different fuel specifications on vehicular emissions and air quality, the implications of changing demand and fuel quality for the refining sector, the technical feasibility and costs of various options for improving fuel quality, and changes in petroleum sector policy. The study makes the following recommendations: a) Fuel specifications will have to be revised soon. b) Harmonization of fuel standards should be considered. c) The refining industry needs guidance about future fuel standards so that it can plan its investments. The World Bank Group may be able to assist in the implementation of some of the recommended measures by pilot testing improved monitoring systems through technical assistance or learning and innovation loans (LILs).

Book Description
In this, the third Aaron Tucker mystery, Aaron, fresh from a trip to Hollywood to "take meetings" on his screenplay, finds himself dragged kicking and screaming once again into investigating a murder, this time of a man in a nearby town shot while walking his dog at night. The young man accused of the crime has Asperger's Syndrome, the same autism-related disorder that Aaron's son Ethan has had since birth.
Aaron is hip-deep in the investigation when he's assaulted by visiting Visigoths-no, wait, that's just his wife Abby's brother and his family, come to visit for a week. But then a local mobster becomes aware of Aaron's poking around in the killing, and wants him to stop. It's going to be an especially interesting holiday season for New Jersey's funniest height-challenged amateur sleuth.
Customer Reviews:
Ethat Steal the Show!.......2006-09-08
I love this series, and it keeps getting better. This time the real hero is Ethan, who creates a tender alliance with another Asperger person to solve the crime. I have worked with these folks as a clinician. Jeff's realistic gentle-handed portrayal of this syndrome, and how a very healthy family works with it, is worth the price. Then add that whacky humor, and a darn good mystery and it's a home run!
Brilliant, funny, sweet, touching. Loved it!.......2006-08-26
Just love how Jeffrey Cohen weaves a complex tale of family, friends and mystery, and makes it all work together. The additional insights (beyond what's in the first two Aaron books) about Asperger's Syndrome really help us understand his relationship with his family and especially his son. The mystery kept me guessing all the way. A real page turner. And hilariously funny at times. More Aaron Tucker please!!
Funny, Entertaining and a Great Read.......2006-04-10
Really well done comic mystery with great gobs of Jewish humor. You'll especially like the take on the holiday season from the Jewish point of view - and it's all too true. In addition we have a good mystery, some fun locals, some real characters and a lot of caring. Jeffrey Cohen has it all in this book, and he deserves to be recognized.
My favorite Aaron Tucker novel yet.......2006-02-14
In this book, the plot sings, the characterization is outstanding, and of course the humor is top notch. This book takes all of the entertainment value of the first two Aaron Tucker novels and adds even more suspense and excitement. Involving Aaron's son in the mystery-solving was a stroke of genious. The author at the top of his game with this one. Simply excellent!
Note: You don't have to read this series in order, so jump in here if you can. Once you read it, you'll be sure to go back and get the other two.
The best yet!.......2006-01-02
This series just gets better. I stumbled upon the first of the series by accident, not knowing about the Asperger's slant and was quite startled to find what appeared to be my own son fictionalized in those pages. Since then, Cohen's writing has become more refined and the family Tucker even more fun to visit. I enjoyed the extended family angle, waiting breathlessly for Aaron to vent his spleen on the intruding (and insensitive) in-laws. Very entertaining. The dialog is mercifully never stilted - a peeve of mine. The addition of more in-depth insight into AS was very welcome; maybe little by little we'll educate the masses concerning "our kids"! The story line has plenty of twists to keep you in the dark and the book is difficult to put down. On the down side, that makes them a very quick read! Keep them coming, Jeff.

The advent of embedded reporters in the opening days of the 2003 US war on Iraq meant a more direct and personal point of view than battlefield coverage has historically offered. Rick Atkinson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for An Army at Dawn, an account of combat in North Africa during World War II, traveled with the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army from its deployment out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky through its entry into Baghdad. The result, In the Company of Soldiers, is a thoroughly engrossing look at the strategies, personalities, and struggles of waging modern warfare. Much of Atkinson's focus falls on the division's leader, the hugely competitive and charismatic Major General David Petraeus, who seems to guide his troops through Iraq by sheer force of will. Atkinson devotes most of his time to the senior commanders, but the loss of the G.I. perspective, while disappointing, is outweighed by Atkinson's access to the minds of the brass who must navigate an Iraq whose citizens were not nearly as happy as military planners had hoped and who offered resistance in ways other than what the Americans had prepared for. While plenty has been written about the American military effort in Iraq, Atkinson's perspective, combined with a direct, economical writing style, allows him to present sides to the war not often seen or considered: long periods of waiting punctuated with mad scrambles to apply gas masks, fretting over how to pack all necessary supplies into tiny kits, dealing with dust storms that can ground state of the art attack helicopters, and reading the irreverent yet shrewdly observant graffiti left by American soldiers. In the Company of Soldiers lionizes the American military officers but it neither condemns nor offers unqualified praise to the US effort in Iraq. Indeed, the disturbing omens of chaos hinted at soon after the invasion began in the spring of 2003 would come into sharper relief when the book was published a year later. --John Moe
Book Description
For soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division, the road to Baghdad began with a midnight flight out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in late February 2003. For Rick Atkinson, who would spend nearly two months covering the division for The Washington Post, the war in Iraq provided a unique opportunity to observe today's U.S. Army in combat. Now, in this extraordinary account of his odyssey with the 101st, Atkinson presents an intimate and revealing portrait of the soldiers who fight the expeditionary wars that have become the hallmark of our age.At the center of Atkinson's drama stands the compelling figure of Major General David H. Petraeus, described by one comrade as 'the most competitive man on the planet.' Atkinson spent virtually all day every day at Petraeus's elbow in Iraq, where he had an unobstructed view of the stresses, anxieties, and large joys of commanding 17,000 soldiers in combat. Atkinson watches Petraeus wrestle with innumerable tactical conundrums and direct several intense firefights; he watches him teach, goad, and lead his troops and his subordinate commanders. And all around Petraeus, we see the men and women of a storied division grapple with the challenges of waging war in an unspeakably harsh environment. With the eye of a master storyteller, the premier military historian of his generation puts us right on the battlefield. In the Company of Soldiers is a compelling, utterly fresh view of the modern American soldier in action.

Company of Soldiers.......2007-04-17
Company Of Soldiers
The book Company Of Hero's By Rick Atkinson is an inspiring book about a reporter imbedded with the 101st airborne infantry division. It is an emotion struggle of a report just trying to survive. The book shows the repetitiveness, the ironies and the loss. He faces many struggles through losing he's best friend to being shot and and almost losing his own life. No matter what this aw inspiring book will leave jessing again and again.
RICK ATKINSON goes to war.......2007-03-17
I was hoping for rick atkinson GOES TO WAR. What the book is is RICK ATKINSON goes to war. Me, me, me. I, I, I.
Terrible writing and shallow thinking: tedious faux-erudite sophomoric metaphor, no real insight.
Snide leftie hate speech: "Although most officers in the military are conservative, General Petraeus' opinions were nuanced."
In the Comapny of Soldiers Review.......2007-03-02
The book In the Company of Soldiers by Rick Atkinson is a decent book that deserves four out of five stars. This book is a first hand account of the war in Iraq, primarily offering great insight into the lives of the Generals of the 101st Airborne Division. The book focuses on all the day to day problems and successes of the high command. Planning and carrying out a war is a big deal. One organizational problem faced before the conflict actually began was the misplacement of the barcode scanner that was supposed to direct shipments leaving the supply ships. The scanner was placed on the third ship causing difficulty unloading the first two ships. In the Company of Soldiers lets you see the constant mental/emotional and physical stress the generals feel. When a helicopter crashes or a battle is not going as planned and troops are killed, General David H. Petraeus admits feeling spikes in his blood pressure. The guerrilla warfare the soldiers encounter is demoralizing and unexpected and leads the generals to question whether or not their battle decisions are correct.
This book could have been better if there had been more coverage of the lower ranking soldiers. The author's personal details, such as misplacing his gasmask or being irritated by the dust, could have been left out. Details about how chemical warfare or the effects of the desert climate affected the soldiers would have been more interesting.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to see what is like to be a high commanding officer in the military, but would not read it a second time.
Relive the Invasion.......2007-01-28
In the Company of Soldiers follows General David Petraeus and the 101st Airborne Division as they deploy from Fort Campbell, Kentucky to Kuwait, then make the march to Baghdad. Unlike most of the accounts I have read of the 2003 invasion, this follows the "behind the scenes" action of the Commanding Officers instead of combat units. Atkinson does an outstanding job at documenting the crucial, tiring decision-making process behind the invasion. Every decision from the seemingly mundane, such as whether to protect helicopter rotors with thick paint or tape, to the assault on Baghdad is meticulously covered. The best aspect of the book is the details one would not have heard on CNN. One of the biggest gaffs occurred during the deployment of equipment. Every shipping box had a barcode which would tell the receivers exactly what was in each box and where it needed to go. But, the Server which housed the barcode Database was on the 3rd ship to arrive. Meaning the first two ships were disorganized when being unloaded. We also get to experience living with the Commanding Officers. We see them celebrate a victory, and weep a failure. Atkinson also reveals small quarks that help the average American relate to the Commanding General in Iraq, such as General Petraeus eating Pop Tarts for breakfast every morning.
This book is very easy to read and should be read by any military history enthusiasts. By covering both the war planning and actual combat, like the capture of Najaf, Karbala, and Hilla, one experiences the war from the Pentagon down. Atkinson is also bipartisan until his afterward. It's nice to hear an account of the first 4 weeks of combat without the political rhetoric. Victories are commended, failures questioned. From fierce Apache firefights to bunking with a Private in the unforgiving Iraqi Desert, you are given the chance to relive the invasion.
An Inside Look at General Petraeus.......2007-01-21
With the recent announcement of General Petraeus as the next commander of troops in Iraq, I took special interst in reading about the way that General Petraeus feels about his mission and how he handles his troops. My son was deployed twice to Iraq, and two grandsons will be entering military service in two short years.
Rick Atkinson's account of his time embedded with Petraeus is written in great detail, worrying with the general over the details of combat, and considering the pros and cons of one choice or another, or the timing of an assualt. The reader gets an up-close view of the complexity of the problem and the pressure on the General.
I'm left with the impression that no one else would be able to do a better job than Petraeus in this most difficult of all assignments coming up. It will take the wisdom of Solomon to make the right choices that will bring this war to a good conclusion.

Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade
ASIN: 0719057116 |
Book Description
The Second Crusade (1145-49) was an unprecedented attempt to expand the borders of Christianity in the Holy Land, the Baltic, and the Iberian peninsula. This wide-ranging collection offers a series of original interpretations of new and partially explored evidence of the crusade. The essays examine the planning, execution, and consequences of the crusade for Western Europe, the Crusader States of the Holy Land, and the Muslim Near East.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad but a little dry.......2006-12-16
The Second Crusade was the only crusade in which i couldnt find that much information until i found this book. The book is informative and i especially like when the authors describe the sequence of events that led to the second crusade.Their explanations of the Crusade of Portugal and North Europe were partucularly interesting. However the book lacks that "narrative kick"( sorry i just invented that phrase) that makes the story of the Crusade so interesting. The account is a little dry and at times is a little dragging. Also the book lacked pictures. In my opinion pictures add a visual aid that makes the narrative more interesting.

Universe As Quantum Probability Wave?.......2002-11-09
This book should be in print. This is an excellent primer for understanding cosmology-the birth of the universe. Although pre-string, little quantum theory is left out. But what I liked most was the last twenty pages of his reflections. There he says that scientific truth must be third person, the sharing of collective truth and not a first person ego trip. He quotes Einstein that personal truth is a kind of optical delusion-"a kind of prison for us." Like many others Pagels found some tranquility in the noosphere of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who asserted the big bang will eventually culminate in the Omega point, an ocean of consciousness where every drop of water remains conscious of itself. His message is purely scientific- liberate yourself "from the obsession with certainty and hope" since these close you "to new experiences about reality."
Pagels realized that most theoretical physics has become a belief factory and that nothing we hold as truth today will suffice for tomorow's world. He urges his reader to develop tolerance for complexity and to welcome contradiction in order to escape the fallacies inherent in simplicity and certainty. He urges his reader to live as he died-an explorer of the unknown.

Book Description
This book tells the fascinating story of the discovery of buckminsterfullerene, a perfectly symmetrical soccer-ball shaped molecule composed of 60 carbon atoms. This new molecule, one of a large family of carbon cage molecules called "fullerenes"--represents a new form of carbon, complementing
such well-known materials as diamond and graphite. Its discovery has revolutionized our understanding of carbon, once the most familiar elements. It has heralded a new chemistry, a new range of high-temperature superconductors and some marvelous new concepts in the architecture of large carbon
structures. In this account, prize-winning science writer Jim Baggott tells the compelling story of buckminsterfullerene, from its natural occurrence in the cold chemistry of interstellar clouds to its accidental, stunning creation in a modern chemistry laboratory, and the subsequent development of
one of today's fastest-growing scientific fields. By combining a lucid and entertaining style with scientific accuracy, the author has written a book that will appeal to general readers and chemists alike.

Perfect Symmetry: The Search for the Beginning of Time
Heinz R. Pagels
Manufacturer: Simon & Schuster
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000PHSB7C |
Product Description
Perfect Symmetry takes us to the frontier of scientific thinking, to the state of the universe before the big bang and before that to the creation of the universe out of absolutely nothing. Dr. Pagels writes with unmatchable elegance about the complex questions raised by the new physics. Perfect Symmetry presages a times in the near future when physicists will attain total understanding of the origin and nature of the universe and its evolution, thus achieving a new outlook on the creation and existence. Pagels emphasizes the new astronomical discoveries gained through the use of radio telescopes and earth-orbiting satellites. Details on the newest scientific findings give the reader a picture of what the universe really looks like - the stars and their deaths as white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes; the structure and evolution of galaxies; and quasars and their distribution in space in the form of clusters and superclusters. Heinz Pagels is that rarest of scientist/writers-one who can make comprehensible to the layman the most complex of ideas, synthesize disciplines to create more than an overview, and bridge the gap to make science read like art.
