5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!.......2007-10-23

THIS BOOK IS FOR EVERYONE! EVEN ORGANIZED PEOPLE NEED THIS BOOK TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE UNORGANIZED PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE, AND WHY IT DOESN'T GET DONE. THIS IS GIVING US ALL HOPE AND THE TOOLS TO DO IT. AND BRINGING PEACE AND COMFORT INTO OUR HOMES. WHAT MORE COULD AN UNORGANIZED PERSON ASK FOR?

5 out of 5 stars Amazed.......2007-10-17

I was and still am amazed at how doing the little things suggested in this book have made my life EASIER! It isn't anything profound, but it is written in a way that is encouraging and motivating!

5 out of 5 stars love it!!!!.......2007-10-11

I like her no nonsense help. I haven't even followed all her instructions yet because I'm a real hard case but even with just the begining steps my husband and family are noticeing a difference in my home already. I'm so glad I bought this book I can't wait to get her other books as well.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but a little too compulsive........2007-10-04

I bought this for my daughter, to help her with her house, life, and anything else. I didn't want her to be insulted, so I read it and told her I bought it for me but thought she might like it too. It started out great, great ideas, funny, fun. But it got a little too over the edge....compulsive...neat freakish towards the end. I told my daughter to try to incorporate SOME of the Flylady's tips into her routine. She hasn't read it yet, but I'm hoping she learns something from it, because she is a very disorganized person. It seemed there were some discrepancies in the book about her life, which makes you feel she's making all of this up to make money, not to share her experience. Hopefully my daughter doesn't catch on to some of it.

5 out of 5 stars Sink Reflections - Flylady - book.......2007-09-25

I loved this book and think it had great motivational ideas. Hopefully it will keep me encouraged to get organized and learn to FLY.

        Book Description

In 1991, Columbia University's one thousand clerical workers launched a successful campaign for justice in their workplace. This diverse union-two-thirds black and Latina, three-fourths women-was committed to creating an inclusive movement organization and to fighting for all kinds of justice. How could they address the many race and gender injustices members faced, avoid schism, and maintain the unity needed to win? Sharon Kurtz, an experienced union activist and former clerical worker herself, was welcomed into the union and pursued these questions. Using this case study and secondary studies of sister clerical unions at Yale and Harvard, she examines the challenges and potential of identity politics in labor movements.

With the Columbia strike as a point of departure, Kurtz argues that identity politics are valuable for mobilizing groups, but often exclude members and their experiences of oppression. However, Kurtz believes that identity politics should not be abandoned as a component in building movements, but should be reframed-as multi-identity politics. In the end she shows an approach to organizing with great potential impact not only for labor unions but for any social movement.

Sharon Kurtz is associate professor of sociology at Suffolk University in Boston.

          Book Description

Tourism is an enormously important industry, but the nature of the tourism product is elusive and the task of marketing and promoting tourism is difficult. Informed by modern marketing theory this book offers a unique approach by taking a comprehensive, synthesised and integrated sociological and cultural approach to tourism marketing. It focuses on controversial issues of tourism imagery, highlighting issues such as gender, sexuality and race as key determinants of tourism power dimensions. The authors take their experience in the tourism industry, combined with their academic knowledge, to produce a deep insight into the cultural role of tourism imagery. The key concepts and procedures are illustrated by case studies of good practice. Students of tourism will find this book a thought-provoking and conceptual evaluation of the subject. Practitioners will find value in the discussion of how the issues raised have been integrated throughout the case studies.

Hayduke keeps on putting out more 'Dirty Tricks' books with his own type of humor built in. Many of the stories are from others through out the world, but the point is made that it could easily happen, right there on your street, to the neighborhood's obnoxious trouble maker.

            Book Description

This absorbing book chronicles the exploitation of Beethoven's life and work by German political parties from the founding of the modern nation in 1870 to the peaceful East German Revolution of 1989. David Dennis taps a wealth of new archival resources to examine for the first time how propagandists of every persuasion have transformed Beethoven and his art into powerful, and varied, national symbols. "In fascinating detail, Dennis introduces many 'Beethovens,' each fashioned as part of a process that transformed the composer into the most protean, and widely abused, cultural-political symbol in modern German history."-David Large, Montana State University "[This book] should fascinate not only Beethoven devotees but also anyone interested in the elusiveness and malleability of historical evidence."-James R. You first dug him on That '70s Show. You daydreamed you'd somehow be part of one of his outrageous hoaxes on Punk'd. And The Butterfly Effect gave you butterflies in your stomach. Now here's the inside scoop on America's most glamorous and adorable goofball-turned-superstar -- a biography of Ashton Kutcher that asks the important questions, like whether he's just one lucky dude or one of the savviest entertainers of his generation. You be the judge.

From his humble beginnings in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to his early days as a model, to how he landed the role of Mike Kelso on the hit sitcom That '70s Show, here is everything you ever wanted to know about Ashton Kutcher. Find out why he studied biomedical engineering in college, why he pretended to end the run of the MTV show in which he'd punk'd his way to the top, and why he's so hellbent on landing dramatic roles. Here's the dish on his family, his outlook on life, his controversial relationship with megastar Demi Moore...and more -- like all the basics: stats, quirky habits, you name it.

Featuring fantastic photos and cool quotes, Ashton Kutcher: The Life and Loves of the King of Punk'd -- like Ashton himself -- has it all! It's a must-have for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Skype add-ons and tweaks to get to to work the way you want.......2006-04-20

Skype is a simple to implement Voice Over IP (VOIP) solution for the average computer user. If you are tired of long-distance charges, want to be able to tell when someone is online and you can call them, chat in a secure, encrypted environment, engage in video chatting with others, or call someone who has a regular phone system at substantially reduced rates then Skype may be the product you need. This book covers installation, configuration, and basic usage as well as configuring advanced features and personalizing your Skype. While this is useful, I found the software to be so user friendly that it was easy to figure out most of this by just exploring the basic options of the system. That being said Chapters seven and eight were well worth the price of the book by themselves. These chapters cover software and hardware add-ons that can greatly enhance your Skype system and make it work the way you would like it to. The final two sections of the book cover setting up Skype in a business environment and writing custom interfaces to it by accessing the Skype API. This section includes important information on how to set up Skype behind a firewall. Skype Me is a highly recommended purchase and a great way to access the VOIP world for anyone with a computer and good Internet access speed.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Skype book.......2006-03-13

Skype Me! is the perfect introduction to Skype for users of all skill levels. It could serve as an example of how to write a product-centric book that delivers real value. The text is well written, clear, and focused. The material becomes progressively complex as the reader moves from learning about Skype, to installing it, to using it, to extending it into areas I hadn't previously considered. Anyone who wants to get the most out of Skype should read Skype Me!

I believe Skype is an incredibly intuitive and simple piece of software. I didn't spend much time with the first four chapters of the book, since I think the ease of installing and using Skype is one of its main attractions. Beginning with Ch 5, however, author Michael Gough started expanding my sense of what could be done by Skype. With advanced features in Ch 6, software add-ons in Ch 7, and hardware accessories in Ch 8, I was entering new territory. The material was well-covered.

I have no real concerns with Skype Me! I have a minor issue with the author's suggestion on p 270 that using a 900 MHz cordless phone is a sign they need to be "upgraded". A 900 MHz cordless phone is a great way to avoid interference in the 2.4 GHz range used by modern wireless networks and newer cordless phones. I would have also liked some expert commentary by a security professional regarding controlling Skype in the enterprise.

Overall I highly recommend Skype Me! I would feel comfortable sharing this book with my parents as a way to encourage them to try Skype. I would also share it with friends who want to tinker at the edges of traditional Skype usage.

5 out of 5 stars The Skype Book Everyone Needs to Read.......2006-03-10

Skype Me! is a book that everyone needs to have. It's less technical than Skype Hacks, which makes it more accessible to non-techies. Gough starts off with basic lessons about VoIP, Peer-to-peer technology (as it's used in VoIP), even Skype security. These basics will help anyone who is looking at setting up Skype in their home.

Installation is covered in Chapter 2. Gough gives detailed instructions on testing individual computers setups to make sure that Skype will work properly, and shows how to install Skype on Windows, Pocket PC, Mac OS X, and Linux. Then, in chapter 3, he covers the basics of using Skype.

Gough spends a lot of time on using Skype from Pocket PCs, even Pocket PC cell phones and smart phones. This is something I'd never thought about, honestly - my cell phone bill is pretty small, and we've got a good family plan. I can see where people who use a lot of cell phone minutes each month could save some money.

Skype Me! also goes into detail when it comes to implementing Skype in a business setting. This is one area where I think that Skype is being under-utilized. There's a perception that Skype is for home users, but isn't powerful enough for enterprise use, but it's clear that Skype is a lot more powerful than people think. There's a lot of potential for business use - especially when you look at the call center hack that I mentioned in the review of Skype Hacks.

One disappointment I had with Skype Hacks was that it didn't really talk much about the Skype API. Skype Me! does this in chapter 14, and goes into enough detail that people with a computer background will be able to take advantage of the API in customizing their own installation of Skype. Skype Me! also goes into more detail in discussing the various Skype-enabled devices that are available, or will soon become available. Gough includes mini-reviews of a lot of popular Skype hardware add-ons that will make your Skype experience much more pleasant - and productive.

For new users, Skype Me! is a valuable addition to their library. The fact that Michael Gough is the guy who runs SkypeTips.com and is constantly adding material at that site is just another reason to get this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Bye-Bye Phone Company!.......2006-02-10

"Skype Me" is an excellent book for both beginners and advanced users of this free Voice over IP (VoIP) application. With easy instructions for downloading, installing, and using on any system, Skype is remarkably effective, but simple. It allows you to talk by voice in computer-to-computer conversations, conferencing, and even video capabilities with the necessary security features to protect your conversations.
This "family and friends" phone plan could put the phone companies out of business - except to bring us the DSL line. I've seen my wife use Skype to conference with her local partner and their Australian customer.
While basics are great, there's plenty here for the more advanced users including using Skype with other hardware and software (eg, wireless devices like cell phones). The authors also walk you through the security aspects of Skype - absolutely necessary these days.
Overall, a great book to own and keep handy as a reference for expanding your cyber knowledge.

This is an excellent walkthrough of Skype all the way from getting started to using special phones and other VoIP appliances. I'm impressed by the depth of the coverage, and the quality of the writing. This is easily the best book I've seen on Skype.

                    Book Description

Home to the notorious “Blue Book,” which listed the names and addresses of every prostitute living in the city, New Orleans’s infamous red-light district gained a reputation as one of the most raucous in the world. But the New Orleans underworld consisted of much more than the local bordellos. It was also well known as the early gambling capital of the United States, and sported one of the most violent records of street crime in the country. In The French Quarter, Herbert Asbury, author of The Gangs of New York, chronicles this rather immense underbelly of “The Big Easy.” From the murderous exploits of Mary Jane “Bricktop” Jackson and Bridget Fury, two prostitutes who became famous after murdering a number of their associates, to the faux-revolutionary “filibusters” who, backed by hundreds of thousands of dollars of public support—though without official governmental approval—undertook military missions to take over the bordering Spanish regions in Texas, the French Quarter had it all. Once again, Asbury takes the reader on an intriguing, photograph-filled journey through a unique version of the American underworld.

4 out of 5 stars Dark Sides of the Big Easy.......2006-02-26

Historically based light narrative-style book. An entertaining read before, during, or after your visit to the Big Easy! This book can be read in parts, but the intriguing bits will make you want to hunt down the haunts of the historical smarmy side of New Orleans.

2 out of 5 stars This book needs revision.......2005-08-10

This book was written so long ago, but has been re-released with a new cover. It contains racist terms and old fashioned dialog. I wished I had been more aware and had bought a more updated history of New Orleans.

                    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful-With Caveats.......2004-03-24

This book stops at 1917 with the closing of Storyville, and was first published in 1938. If at all possible, buy a good original printing. The trade paperback now out has poor, small reproductions of the original illustrations. This is a wonderful, engaging, laugh-out-loud book to be read time and time again. However, it has some factual errors. Asbury implies that Storyville was in the French Quarter-it was not. He also repeats verbatim some "legends" that were invented long after the fact. If you want a correct history of Storyville, see Al Rose's book.

                    4 out of 5 stars N'awlins rough.......2004-01-07

THE FRENCH QUARTER is a history of crime, vice, and general rascality in New Orleans from its founding in 1718 by the French to the abolition of the Storyville red-light district in 1917.

In fifteen chapters, author Herbert Asbury describes the disruptive roles played by keelboat ruffians, revolutionists, gamblers, duelists, prostitutes, corrupt cops and politicians, pirates, filibusters (soldiers of fortune), vigilantes, pickpockets, muggers, thugs, the Mafia, and voodoo practitioners in the lives of the otherwise law-abiding citizenry. Anyone reading Asbury's narrative might be led to believe that good folks were a miniscule minority.

THE FRENCH QUARTER suffers from being published almost seventy years ago. Aside from a number of old sketch reproductions, and several badly reproduced B&W photographs of bordello interiors and exteriors during the Storyville era, THE FRENCH QUARTER is sadly lacking in illustration. There's not even a map of the city from which to get one's bearings.

This work is wonderfully informative as far as it goes, perhaps occasionally more so than is needed to make the point that the city, especially in the mid-1800s, could be a noxious place. The narrative is sober and straightforward, only occasionally displaying dry humor. A couple examples from the text will suffice to give one a sense of the book's tone and the city's iniquity.

Regarding barrel-houses,the lowest form of drinking place: "The owner of one such establishment not only doped all of his liquor, but maintained his own staff of sneak thieves ... (who) worked on a percentage basis and took turns robbing the sodden wretches who were dragged from the barrel-house."

Regarding the streetwalkers of the Dauphine and Burgundy Street vice area after the Civil War:
" ... the perambulating bawds flung a piece of old carpet on the sidewalk and entertained their customers in full view of passers-by and the prostitutes in the houses ... (who) kept pails of hot water handy to discourage use of the doorsteps." Hmm, I would have thought ice water more effective at shrinking amorous ardor.

Decades after THE FRENCH QUARTER appeared, N'awlins is a model of purity. Why, would you believe me if I said you can't even spit on the street?

                    5 out of 5 stars I Loved This Book.......2003-07-20

I am so happy this book is being reprinted! I had a copy some years back and howled with laughter at the antics of some the the Quarter's historic gangs, crooks, and ne'er-do-wells. If you are planning your first trip to New Orlean's, this book is a must read, or if you just want to sit back and have a good time and be tickled by some truly amazing characters (like Bricktop) and their pecadillos, buy this book.

Beautifully designed and illustrated with hundreds of photographs, this companion volume to the CNN documentary series begins with the roots of the cold war: the military intervention by six nations (including the United States) in the Bolshevik's 1917 Russian Revolution. The book then takes on the cold war proper, from the post-WWII rise of the Iron Curtain to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet government in the early '90s. "For forty-five years," the authors write, "the peoples of the world held their breath," through missile crises, policies of "mutual assured destruction," the Vietnam War, and the uneasy steps toward détente and full peace highlighted by Richard Nixon's meetings with Brezhnev and by Mikhail Gorbachev's meetings with Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Special sections highlight the role of spies in the cold war, as well as the films and literature of the era. This is a copiously detailed account of the major historical force of the latter half of the 20th century that would make an excellent reference book for any household.

Everyone and their brother has released a book on World War II. Or any other period in history, for that matter. The Vietnam and Korean wars, its all been told a thousand times. But few books that I've ever found in general circulation cover the broad topic of the entire Cold War. Issacs and crew cover the period with as much detail as possible in such a complicated and even sometimes confusing period of time. They do a superb job, with each chapter covering a specific feature of the Cold War, such as the Cuban Missle crisis and more interesting, though less known of events. Issacs provides a very objective viewpoint, and makes reading Cold War: An Illustrated History not so much as a chore as some history books can be.
The pictures provided are really good, and provide many pictures of the key players in the game of chess that was played on Earth throughout the decades.
I rather enjoyed the various side bars presented throughout the book, each one touching upon various aspects of the Cold War, such as spies, or even entertainment.
If you have any interest in the Cold War, or are just plain curious as to what made the world what it is now, this is your best place to start. Buy it.

If you're looking for general history on the 40 to 50 year period known as the "Cold War", than this book along with the CNN program "Cold War" is for you...contrary to a few of the other reviewers, I liked this book in it's general state and I would not want to extoll my opinions concerning morality here. I'm sure that there are other books that would welcome that type of review, but this book is just for the general history reader and presented in a fabulous format! Maps, color photograhs and charts along with clear and interesting prose make this an excellant "launching pad" to the struggle and to other more detailed views. Highly recommended.

In contrast to the views of the reviewer below this is a VERY objective book. The U.S./CIA Cold War activities resulted in the support and establishment of murderous dictatorships in Latin America which were every bit as cruel/oppressive as those of our Communist enemies. There was also the unjust war we waged in Vietnam which killed over a million people. Finally there was the CIA/American backed coup which resulted in the murder of the ELECTED president of Chile, Allende, and the establishement of the dictator Pinochet who is now being prosecuted for mass murder. This book addresses these and other issues instead of using the recent right wing Reagonite rhetoric which equates the U.S. as a benevolent force of freedom as opposed to those evil Communists. The book, while covering many topics and areas related to the cold war, is clearly written and informative. The fantastic illustrations only add to this books appeal. It is time American citizens realize the Cold War was NOT a battle between freedom and tyranny but an amoral conflict between diametrically opposed economic systems struggling to control world markets and resources.

This book offers a pop history of the Cold War intended for a wide audience. Its main aim seems to be to persuade that both sides were morally equivilent - that the Cold War was caused by misunderstandings and politics rather than a clash of civilization vs. barbarism. No one would, or should, treat the conflict against Facism and National Socialism (Nazism) in this fashion; monsterous crimes should be recognized for what they are. Communism was equally wicked, not just another point of view.

For a more accurate portrayal of what was at stake in the Cold War I recomend "The Black Book of Communism" and "Architects of Victory." If any sources should be used to educate children, it is these books (especially "The Black Book of Communism," which is thouroughly reasurced by scholars in the various fields that are covered), and not this Turner effort to re-write realities underlying the Cold War.

I bought this book having never seen the BBC series, although I found it incredibly useful and informative. I studied the topic "US-Soviet Relations in the Nuclear Age" in my high school modern history class this year and last [years/grades 11 and 12] and for someone who was quite young when the Cold War came to an end this is a helpful book in that it explains events and the lead up to such events in a simple and easy to understand manner. The photographs are wonderful, and personally I was able to gain a greater insight into what it was that I was actually studying. All in all this book is written in quite a clear and concise style, and, with the inclusion of some brilliant images, is not only highly informative but incredibly interesting.

First thing I want to say is that this book is not a "window seat" one as all the pictures included were taken from a satellite.
The texts are corect and clear and the photgraphs extraordinary.
I only want to comment something. As a spaniard, I can say that there are not so many whales in the Bay of Biscay, as it is said in pg.75.

Dicum does it again! I'm one of those people who are glued to the window from take-off to landing, so I loved Window Seat for it's wealth of information and gorgeous aerial photography. I'm pleased to report that Window Seat: Europe delivers the same quality and joy of discovery. I've got a European trip planned for next Spring, and I'm really looking forward to using Window Seat: Europe -- Dicum's genius is in showing us how to enjoy sightseeing from 35,000 feet up!

Pick up a used copy of this charming book. You'll be glad you did. Author May Theilgaard Watts' mottos, as a naturalist, teacher, poet, and keen observer of the ways in which we human beings shape our world, could have been, "everything is connected to everything else," and, "everything tells a story." Reading her descriptions of the landscapes of Europe is like travelling with an extremely knowledgeable, funny, curious, and opinionated guide. How I wish I could have been there with her, but the book is a wonderful treat on its own. She visits seven countries, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Britain. The local landscapes she considers are well worn, shaped over centuries by humans and nature. She draws on botany, geography, literature, astronomy, and history, to explain why a place looks, smells, and feels the way it does, and to give us a sense of the soul of the place. In "A Vocabulary of the British Landscape," she explains the natural and human history of moors and heaths, wealds and downs--and the ecology of a bomb crater in London. Her pen and ink drawings are delightful. At the end of the book is a key to the trees of Europe, similar to her well-known key to American trees, the Tree Finder. Full disclosure: I am the author's granddaughter, and current publisher of her book, Reading the Landscape of America.

                                        Book Description

In 1995 a second phase of excavations was undertaken by Oxford Archaeological Unit (OAU) at Reading Business Park in advance of development. This volume reports on the evidence they found for occupation, dating to the Neolithic, Bronze Age and medieval periods. The Neolithic features included an unusual segmented ring ditch, and a number of pits and postholes. The ring ditch was radiocarbon dated to the middle to late Neolithic, and an interesting flint assemblage from all features on the site was dated mainly to the later Neolithic. A field system, composed of rectangular boundary ditches, was laid out in the area prior to the establishment of a late Bronze Age settlement. The evidence for the late Bronze Age settlement included five roundhouses, and a number of post-built structures. The excavators also found numerous deposits of burnt flint that were made in one area in the later Bronze Age, and over time these grew into a substantial and unusually large elongated burnt mound. The authors discuss the origin of these deposits, together with the management of the overall landscape in the later Bronze Age.

Wilderness has and continues to have very different meanings for various groups of people. The "dilemma" occurs because some special interest groups want to "tame" and use wilderness resources while others demand a "hands-off" preservation policy. To cope with these two extremes, government agencies have enacted a series of regulations and laws. Private citizens have banded together to work for suitable wilderness policies. This book examines all aspects of the complex wilderness question including legislation, water rights and miner exploration.
