Book Description
The Food Network's Bob Blumer is called the Surreal Gourmet for good reason: he's an artist when it comes to creating dishes as fun and delicious to look at as they are to eat. Ceci n'est pas your ordinary party fare, but an array of 50 little mouthwatering masterpieces. With recipes such as Coconut Shrimp Lollypops (skewered shrimp with an amazing apricot dipping sauce), Chinese Snow Cones (wontons stuffed with chicken salad and ginger vinaigrette), and the ingenious and very adult S'more Shooters (amaretto hot chocolate with roasted marshmallows), guests will be abuzz about the food all the way home. Complete with tips and techniques, including shortcuts and prep times, as well as whimsical presentation ideas and Bob's quintessential suggestions for music to cook by, each cocktail bite is simple enough for the home cook and memorable enough to become addictive. With Surreal Gourmet Bites, the food will be the life of the party.
Customer Reviews:
Fun with food.......2006-02-18
Through my job in the kitchen appliance industry, I was lucky enough to see Bob Blumer do his thing in a very intimate (about 10 people) setting. From the moment he showed up wearing an AC/DC t-shirt and a pair of outrageous chef's pants, I knew this was going to be a lot more fun than the typical Food Network cooking shows(except maybe maybe Giada's Everyday Italian...but that's for different reasons).
Besides tasting great, the foods he prepared were just downright funny! He was very personable and had a great sense of humor which is reflected throughout this entire book.
I wasn't going to give this book 5 stars simply because these are just not foods you can prepare on any sort of a regular basis. They are mostly meant to be...for lack of a beeter way to describe it....different. But I reconsidered and gave it 5 stars anyway because it's just so damn funny and so damn original!
If you are going to a party, get-together or anytype of social event where food will be served, and you want your offering to be the talk of the moment...this is the book for you. Even if you're not a great cook or don't do such a hot job preparing these bites, the presentation alone will make you the hit! Check it out!
GREAT NEW FOODS!.......2005-12-13
I tried the smores shooters, and coconut shrimp popsicles, the sauce on the shrimp popsicles tasted great like something you would get in a resteraunt.I also tried the bang bang drummettes, and the inside out BLTs which tasted great. Living in Colorado I enjoyed the smores shooters as they are a great treat to have before you go snowboarding!
Artist Still Playing With His Food with Amuse-Bouche!.......2004-09-15
Teasers as warmup course, or appetizer feast, here is consummate surreal gourmet providing the inspiration with about fifty recipes composing sections on: fish, meat, fowl, veggies, sweets.
This continues his strong past of imaginative food with stylish twists of humor and fun with food. Try the likes of: Fish Cakes (salmon cupcakes with dill mashed potato icing); Cocktail Dates (bacon-wrapped parmesan-stuffed dates); Cowboy Cookies (chile-crusted tenderloin between carmelized yam slices); Inside Out BL's (bacon, arugula, and goat cheese sandwiched between fried tomato slices);Knuckle Sandwich (nutella, hazelnuts and sauteed pears on toasted pound cake).
Add to all this suggested menus, brief primer and notes oon frying and advance-prep ingredient handling, and suggested menus.
This is fun food, more lighthearted but serious food as well along the lines of Gale Gand's "Just A Bite" or her partner's Rick Tramonto's "Amuse Bouche."

Description:
In this paper we review the development, potential causes and macroeconomic implications of inflation differentials in the euro area. We also present some new evidence based on an estimated New Keynesian style model of the euro area economies. Our empirical analysis suggests that the observed inflation differentials since the start of EMU were mainly driven by temporary shocks combined with a rather high level of inflation persistence. The scope for an amplification of inflation differentials via corresponding real interest rate differentials appears to be limited by the presence of significant real exchange rate and direct output spill-over effects in the euro area IS Curves. We also find that inflation persistence is significantly lower, virtually zero, in the group of euro area countries which have already experienced comparably low and stable inflation rates in the past. Since the monetary policy of the Eurosystem is geared at delivering and maintaining low and stable inflation rates, inflation persistence should also decrease in the other countries, which would in turn mitigate the persistence of euro area inflation differentials.

Great Refresher!.......1999-10-17
"Professor Weissman's LAUGH with MATH" is a good book to use as a refresher; even as a primary learning book (algebra). At first it took getting used to, as the book is in a comic book type of layout. It made learning fun! The book also came with free software that included 3 math programs.
Book Description
Readers will discover how rewarding teaching music can be. Whether they teach full time or want to supplement their performance income by giving private lessons, they need this book to learn how to run a profitable business. The Newsams show them how to find lucrative teaching opportunities, market themselves, design a home studio, manage their time and work schedule, and more.
Customer Reviews:
good one!.......2006-05-27
this book offers great information but tys is much more fulfilling in his book "The Music Business: How You Can Make $500,000.00 (or More) a Year in the Music Industry by Doing It Yourself! Volume II "
A 'How To' book - not just a dialogue.......2004-02-15
It's nice to come across books that are actually helpful when it comes to acting on what has been discussed. I'v used most of the ideas in this book in starting a successful guitar teaching practice. All the ideas work - well nearly, you have to make allowances for cultural differences and local customs - but I'd assume we're not that insensitive. All the ideas are practical and can be done with almost no budget. And the advice is true - even though when you start out you'll think you know better and have to get 'burned' before you read it again and get it the second time over. Seems to me like this was written by someone who's been there, made the mistakes and successes and is telling us about it all. If you are teaching music (or even judo, dance, yoga, or any personal service) you need to read this book (or something very much like it.) In my experience it saved me it's cost many many times over in only a couple of months
Excellent resource for new teachers and pro-teachers alike.......2000-11-09
I have been teaching private music lessons for about 10 years now and had I had this book when I started out I don't think I would have made the mistakes I made. I still use it as a reference (it is always next to my piano). I found the chapters re: recruiting, finances and getting set up were crucial and very informative. Having this book also gave me the extra confidence when it came to quitting my other jobs and teaching private lessons full-time.
A definite "must-have" if you are currently teaching or if you are thinking about teaching in a private studio.
A common sense approach to teaching music lessons.......1999-07-21
This is a very comprehensive guide to teaching music. All the chapters are easy to read and divided into good sections, and offers many good ideas on how to teach various grade levels from elementary to adult, and more important, how to deal with their parents. It also covers school and community programs, as well as ideas on how to promote yourself (i.e. business cards and portfolios) and necessary lesson items to keep in your trunk. The chapter on taxes was helpful for me also. A very good book for someone wanting to start their own teaching studio, to teach band or community programs, or to simply pick up a few students for some extra money.
Very helpful resource..........1999-04-09
This book is a must if you are serious about starting your own business as a music teacher. I found that the chapter on taxes and finances especially helpful. There is an appendix at the end of the book that lists addresses and phone numbers for various music organizations.
Book Description
They prefer "Trekker" to "Trekkie," and here the dedicated fans of this sci-fi mainstay tell their own stories, in their own words. Some of these fans have taken Star Trek's ideals to heart, trying to live without prejudice because of lessons learned from the show. Others tell tales of meeting the stars or finding true love at Trekker conventions. All of them are proud to call Star Trek a way of life, and their tales illustrate why it means so much.
Customer Reviews:
Trekker reviewed.......2002-06-18
I have to admit a bit of personal bias for this book, as I am 1 of the Storytellers in the book. All that aside I found most of the stories very entertaining, and some of them truely inspirational. I have and will continue to recommend this book to family & friends, to Trek and non Trek fans alike, not just because of the Trek connection, but for the true life stories of others to rise to the occassion and overcome.

Book Description
The deeds and personalities of famous pirates have received significant attention in recent years: however, no detailed depiction of their vessels has ever been produced. This title redresses the imbalance, conducting a detailed exploration of the wide variety of pirate vessels that sailed the high seas during the 'golden age' of piracy (1690–1730), from gun-bristling warships to smaller craft such as sloops, brigantines and early schooners. It incorporates the latest archaeological evidence to produce a fascinating account of these vessels, detailing their origins, development and tactical engagement. Packed with contemporary illustrations and superbly detailed colour artwork, the ships of the 'golden age' are brought vividly to life.
Customer Reviews:
Well researched and authoritative.......2007-09-25
I found the book to be a solid resource in coming to understand the complex and sometimes contradictory world of marine architecture. The color illistrations were excellent even when the period reproductions were unclear. It was clearly written and easily understandable.
Pirate Ship Review.......2007-01-09
Overall the Pirate ship was excellent and my grandson loves it.
However, in assembly, although relatively easy, the directions were vague. There were mostly pictures and arrows. The installation of the "collapsing mast" caused the most problems. It was unclear how the mast was to fit on the release lever. It turns out that there is a slot that the mast fits into but this is not clearly depicted.
The Life and Times of a Pirate Ship.......2005-09-20
THE PIRATE SHIP 1660-1730 by Angus Konstam is an interesting little book (48 pages total), which has some very nice illustrations of 16th/17th century pirate ships, including a cross-section of the inside of a ship.
What you should expect to find in this book ... Topics include the design, origins, and conversion of pirate ships; small vessels and pirate flagships; and the pirate ship in action. The narration is easy to read and nicely detailed, and of course the main subject of the book is the pirate ship itself. One of my favorite passages was the real-life entry of a pirate-attack survivor, who talked about how his merchant ship engaged in bloody combat with pirates while (shockingly) two other merchant ships looked on, doing nothing to help.
What you won't find in this book ... I knew this book wasn't about the pirates themselves, as there are other books in this series written by this author that exclusively discuss pirates (or buccaneers). What I HAD hoped for, and didn't find, was a discussion about what living in a pirate ship was like (where did they eat, sleep, use the restroom, etc.?). As a side note, the closest I've ever come to seeing what life aboard a pirate ship might have been like was visiting the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, which has a restored 17th century warship and includes a display on life inside the ship. It's a neat museum.
Anyway, this was a good little book for those interested in pirate ships. A recent pirate book I read and highly recommend is UNDER THE BLACK FLAG, which was rather entertaining for non-fiction.
disapointing.......2003-07-28
Hardly worth obtaining. Most of the information in here can be found elsewhere. But makes a good companion for the author's book on pirates by the same publisher.

Book Description
The story of Hideyo Noguchi's rise from poor farm boy to famous medical pioneer is a true rags-to-riches story. Born into a family of struggling sharecroppers in a village in the snow country of northern Japan, Noguchi, as a small child, suffered a serious burn which turned his left hand into a useless stump and inflicted permanent scars on his personality. A skillful doctor, however, later operated on this hand, allowing him to use it again to some extent, and inspiring him to pursue a career in medicine himself. Noguchi's extraordinary drive and academic talent propelled him through the hidebound medical training establishment of his own country at record speed, and on to America, to seek his fortune. This too he eventually achieved, thanks to the breakthroughs he made in bacteriological research at the Rockefeller Institute, which included isolating the agent that causes syphilis. His work on other diseases, especially yellow fever, took him as far afield as Ecuador and West Africa, and it was in tropical Africa, doing field research, that he contracted the disease that killed him in his early fifties. Noguchi's struggle to overcome his physical handicap, to make a name for himself as an Asian scientist in a Western-dominated field, and to increase the fund of human knowledge, has given him an exalted status in Japan, where his face is now on the thousand-yen note. But the author of this new biography is at pains to present a true portrait of the man considered by many of his countrymen as something of a saint. Like Albert Schweitzer, Noguchi in his single-mindedness could be a trial for those around him, and this, combined with an amazing carelessness with money that led him to spend almost all his borrowed travel money on food and drink on the eve of his departure for America, made for a less-than-ideal character.
Customer Reviews:
Lost in Translation?.......2006-09-21
If there is anything about this book that is great, it is the translation. In comparison with the original text, the translation is perfect, it reflects every aspect, emotion, thought, and idea in book accurately and precisely. A lot of books don't get translated half as well as this one. I really liked this book and I think everyone interested in this subject should look into it, at least have a peek.
Through devotions to science, he lived and died for humanity.......2005-08-08
Dr. Hideyo Noguchi may not quite be a household name in the United States, but in Japan people see his face every time they reach into their wallets to pull out a ubiquitous 1,000 yen note, and the small, isolated farmhouse where he was born sees over 1 million annual tourists making the long trek. A dedicated and important pioneer in the field of microbiology and epidemics, the modern world owes much to Noguchi, even though they may not know the extent of the debt.
"Dr. Nogochi's Journey" is a semi-biography of the great doctor's life, and an attempt to reconcile the conflicting portraits of the genius Noguchi and the worthless drunk and spend-thrift Noguchi, both sides of which have been trumpeted in Japan at some time or other. A semi-biography only, because as in a more-typical style of a Japanese history book a story is told, leaving us privy to quoted dialog and Noguchi's personal inner thoughts, things that the author could not possibly be pulling from authenticated sources.
Nogochi definitely lived an interesting life, coming from the grinding, dismal poverty of a poor farming family in Meji Japan, and rising to a level where he could freely introduce friends to the President of the United States and dined with Emperors. His rise is something achieved by both his own drive, talent and ambition, as well as with the sacrifices of many others who saw something in the child that they believed in. His club-like left hand, destroyed in a fire when he was just a baby, became the thing that shamed him and spurred him to out-distance his classmates. He shamelessly begged money and connections from his friends, family and co-workers, little of which was ever payed back. So single-minded was he that failure was never an option, and he managed to get whatever he needed to go to medical school, to leave Japan, and to discover and cure ravaging epidemic diseases like syphilis, rocky mountain fever, the bubonic plague, and the devastating yellow fever.
An interesting idea in "Dr. Noguchi's Journey" is that Noguchi, while considered a national hero in Japan, could never have achieved anything in his home country. He is, in many ways, a symbol of the limitation of Japanese culture, where seniority and connections matter more than drive and talent. Only by traveling to the US could Noguchi rise to a necessary level to leverage his talents and bring relief to a suffering world. Indeed, Japan was one of the last countries to recognize this expatriate during his lifetime.
I found his life fascinating, as well as the musings on the nature of genius, that it is not a matter of brains and talents so much as an environment where those brains and talents are allowed to reach fruition. Without his army of benefactors, Noguchi would probably never have amounted to more than a local farmer, if even that.
The only complaint I have with "Dr. Noguchi's Journey" is either the writing style or the translation, although I do not know which. The opening chapters are severely heavy-handed and full of pathos and purple prose in the descriptions of the sacrifices and struggles of Noguchi's suffering mother. I well know that this sort of writing is typical of the Japanese style and language, especially when dealing with sufferings mothers, but it comes off as strange in English. Perhaps the translator adjusted his style as the book went along, because this aspect is smoothed out and the writing itself becomes more enjoyable along with the story.

Book Description
Tropical forests are vanishing at an alarming rate. This book, based on extensive international field research, highlights one solution for preserving this precious resource: empowering local people who depend on the forest for survival. Synthesizing a vast amount of information that has never been brought together in one place, Roger D. Stone and Claudia D'Andrea provide a clearly written and energizing tour of global efforts to empower community-based forest stewards. Along the way, they show the fundamental importance of tropical forest ecosystems and deepen our sense of urgency to save them for the benefit of billions of rural people in tropical and subtropical regions as well as for countless species of plants and animals.
In their travels to research this book, the authors saw many remarkable examples of how proficient even the poorest local people can be in stabilizing and recovering formerly destitute forests. With engagingly written case studies from Thailand's Golden Triangle to Mindanao in the Philippines, from Indonesia, India, and Africa to Brazil, Mexico, and Central America, they introduce us to the communities and the individuals, the governments, the loggers, the agencies, and the local groups who vie for forest resources. Contrasting community-based efforts and traditional forest management with government and donor efforts, they discuss the many reasons why international institutions and national governments have been unable and unwilling to stem the accelerating loss of tropical forestland.
This book argues we are paying a terrible price--politically, economically, and environmentally--for allowing tropical forests to be stripped. Community-based forestry is no panacea, but this book clearly shows its effectiveness as a management technique.
