    3 out of 5 stars "Introductory".......2006-10-17

Be careful - there is an introductory (only goes to ch. 9) and a complete edition. I'm writing this because I did not pay attn and just realized (half way through my course) that I have the wrong one. Didn't want anyone else to make the same mistake...

5 out of 5 stars Great book for intro. concepts computer course.......2004-11-20

                      Book Description

Heart failure continues to be a major public health problem in the United States with close to half a million new cases diagnosed each year. Moreover, deaths from heart failure are on the increase, in part because of advances in the treatment of other fatal diseases, and in part from the prevalence of lifestyles indifferent to the risk factors for heart disease. This is not to say that no progress has been made in the treatment of heart failure. While for many years treatment was confined to the management of the symptoms, in recent years with the advent of ACE inhibitor and ß blacker therapies, real improvements in cardiac function and life expectancy have been achieved (Volume 4B, Leier). On a more basic level, enormous advances have been made in describing many of the changes in structure and function of the heart and the parallel neurohumoral and circulatory adaptations that occur during the onset of failure. These advances have been made not only by using various animal models of heart failure, but also using fresh failing human heart tissue, which has become readily available for experimental investigation since the advent of cardiac transplantation.

Understanding the significance of many of these changes that occur during the transition to failure and the role they play in the etiology of failure is, however, a much more difficult task. These are exciting times in heart failure research. It is as though many of the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are available but the puzzle has yet to be assembled. The objective of these volumes is to bring together some advances that have been made in recent years in defining one aspect of the failing heart, that is, the role of altered metabolism, in order to facilitate assembly of the puzzle.

                        Book Description

Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption, Volume 1 describes and catalogs available spectral information relevant to how common gases interact with sunlight and other sources of electromagnetic radiation such as x-rays, flames, and plasmas. Photoabsorption is light's reduction in intensity and force when it passes through a column of gas or liquid. This book also includes a large number of data tables and figures that are invaluable to researchers because they help them select exactly which wavelengths to use in their experiments. The further distinguishing aspect of this book is its synthesis across a broad spectrum of wavelengths and compilation of data for a large number of atoms and molecules.

4 out of 5 stars An abridged version of Schouten's earlier treatise.......2002-08-01

In recent times it has become fashionable to derogate the classical tensor analysis cultivated by such pioneers as Levi-Civita, Schouten and Eisenhart. Modern critics refer to such works as a "sea of indices", the reading of which is likened to "chasing shadows". It is true that this style of tensor analysis does not uphold the standards of rigor set forth by the Bourbaki school of presentation, but, in light of the fact that the language has changed so drastically since the writing of this book, it would be fair to treat the classical theory as a separate subject, of interest in its own right.

This book offers a valuable, yet not entirely self-contained, introduction to classical tensor analysis. As a beginner, I found the text to be too terse and was forced to consult other sources, such as Levi-Civita's "Absolute Differential Calculus" and Eisenhart's "Riemannian Geometry". Once I had gained some familiarity with the basic notions, Schouten's book became the preferred reference. The author develops an extremely precise notation which he calls the "kernel-index method" and systematically applies it as a problem solving tool throughout the book. Looking back, it is difficult to say how I ever got along without it.

Unfortunately, the book's terseness is due in part to the fact that the first five chapters are basically abridged excerpts from the author's lengthier 1954 treatise, "Ricci-Calculus". In nearly every respect, the aforementioned title is more complete than the present book. In the interest of saving space for the physical applications in the second half of the text, the author omitted important details, such as an adequate definition of manifold and the role of the vector field which generates the infinitesimal transformations used in discussing Lie derivatives.

For classical tensor analysis, Schouten's "Ricci-Calculus" (1954) and "Pfaff's Problem and its Generalizations" (1949, but still in print) are both excellent. For the modern theory, I have found Noll: Finite Dimensional Spaces; Choquet-Bruhat et al: Analysis, Manifolds and Physics, Part I and II; Spivak: A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry, Volume 1; Loomis: Advanced Calculus; and Helgason: Differential Geometry, Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces all to be exceptionally well written.

4 out of 5 stars This is a no easy book!.......2001-06-26

First that everything should have present that this it is not an introduction book. Don't hope to learn tensor analysis in this book. From the first chapter it begins to demand you and to tell you what you should know and to understand the subject to follow their reading. Definitively you have to have the clear subject in your mind to enjoy the book. But that doesn't mean that it is bad book, or that the book takes a lie title : the book is for exact science graduates (or science advanced undergraduates). The notation, inclusive, you will notice it heavy, difficult. You can divide the book in three parts: the part corresponding to the chapters 1-5 where it introduces all the elements of the tensor analysis . A second part, the chapter 6, dedicated to the study of the physical objects and their dimensions, and a third part that it includes the remaining chapters, dedicated to applications. It is not an easy book. This is a book on tensors where you won't learn on tensors. It is a beautiful synthesis of the content of the tensor analysis (chapters 1-5). The rest, obviously is impossible to find everything in a single book. Not yet it is enough with to have a general knowledge of the topic for this book. You have to have a solid one.

I would suggest this book for relativity lovers, who loves to undrestand General relativity deeply. This book is easy to learn and it takes very little time to read but the benefits are very large.

                        Book Description

In Mary Kay Andrews's bestselling third novel, a no–good lowdown, lying, cheating varmint of an ex–fiancé gets the comeuppance he so richly deserves. This is a dishy and outrageous story that Mary Kay's readers will love.

The night before her wedding, in the middle of an oh–so–smart rehearsal dinner, interior decorator Keeley Murdock chances upon her fiance and maid of honor in flaming flagrante delicto. Keeley throws the hissy fit to end all hissy fits and storms out.

The next day, though, she has to deal not only personally with a broken engagement but also with her business being shut out by folks in a town financially obligated to her ex. Rescue comes in the form of the new owner of the local bra plant. This guy is a hunk but he's also a teensy bit weird, since he hires Keeley to redo the broken–down antebellum mansion he's bought for the woman of his dreams. The trouble is, he's never met said woman. So Keeley dives in and finds that true love can come even to those who throw humdinger hissy fits.

                        "

Welcome to the world of Mary Kay Andrews, where manners are polished, reputations are tarnished ... and revenge issweet.

Keeley Murdock's wedding to A. J. Jernigan should have been the social event of the season. But when she catches her fiance doing the deed with her maid of honor at the country club rehearsal dinner, all bets are off. And so is the wedding. Keeley pitches the hissy fit of the century, earning herself instant notoriety in the small town of Madison, Georgia.

Even worse is the financial pressure A.J.'s banking family brings to bear on Keeley's interior design business. But riding to the rescue -- in a vintage yellow Cadillac -- is the redheaded stranger who's purchased a failing local bra plant. Will Mahoney hires Keeley to redo the derelict antebellum mansion he's bought. Her assignment: decorate it for the woman of his dreams -- a woman he's never met.

Only a designing woman like Keeley Murdock can find a way to clear her name and give her cheating varmint of an ex-fiance the comeuppance he so richly deserves. And only Mary Kay Andrews can deliver such delicious social satire. With Hissy Fit, she's created a story as outrageous, dishy, and true as Savannah Blues and Little Bitty Lies.

This is a fun book to read especially since I was raised not far from Madison. As another review put it, it's not for someone who wants to think when they read. This book is no brain teaser, but is entertaining. It's one of only 3 books I've ever read that made me laugh out loud.

Another great beach read!! Easy to follow ~ not exceptionally deep if you like to have to "think" while you read, but how much fun is that? This is perfect for lazy summer afternoons. I suggest other books by Mary Kay Andrews as well for a "take me away from my own problems" experience.

3 out of 5 stars Not THAT good.......2007-06-13

I bought this book because of the reviews that people wrote, but I was really disappointed. The "hissy fit" occurs at the very beginning; and the main character does something crazy with toilet water toward the middle, but that's about it. This book was actually very depressing because of her missing mother. Her engagement is over, she tries to put pieces together about her mother's whereabouts, and is concerned about a bra factory that may be closing. The end of the book is okay, but the stuff about her mom was almost too upsetting to even care about the way it concluded. I'm not so sure I'd recommend this book, but I do like others written by this author. Mary Kay Andrews also puts recipes in the back of the books, which is a very cute idea.

I agree with other reviewers who thought that this book was poorly edited. While I understand she's an interior designer, the endless antique shopping scenes bored me to tears.

I also don't think the relationship between Keely and Will was developed enough because of the numerous subplots.

this book is more like a large pamphlet. The book is mainly a lot of ideas that are somewhat common sense (at least to me). In order to make most of this book work for you, you might want to also get a book on how to extremely lower your standards. The author suggests most of his ideas to become homeless and hitchhike as opposed to actually setting up a new identity although there are a few ideas about that. All in all for the length of the read i didnt expect to much, but got a few ideas.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!.......2007-01-13

I am surprised at some of the past reviewers of this book. They sound like armchair secret agents that want a book like this to tell them all the secrets of 9/11, Roswell and the Kennedy assassination, all for under a dollar!

The truth is, however, that this book is a how-to manual for people who need to lay low for a while, because of financial problems, stalkers, vengeful ex-spouses, or what have you.

Do the techniques it describes work? YES. Using them I was able to disappear for several months during a time when a vengeful and psychotic ex-boyfriend wanted very much to put a bullet in me. He is now sitting in prison, and I am safe for at least 20 years. But if I hadn't found this book then I would likely be dead at this point.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who needs to get away from things for a while - without anyone being able to track them down.

Most books on the subject of Fake ID tell you how to start over completely. You have to sever ties to your former life permanently and completely. There is no going back. But what if you aren't sure you want to change your ID completely? What if all you need is an extended vacation to collect your thoughts and prepare a plan?

"Cover Your Tracks Without Changing Your Identity" introduces the concept of a "light identity change". This interesting title explains how to leave your old identity intact but keep your problems finding you at your new location. Using Wilson's tactics in "Cover Your Tracks Without Changing Your Identity", you will be able to return to your former identity if you desire.

The information contained in this unique title will undoubtedly help many people.

Anyone needing to increase their personal privacy should read this book. It has advice for people trapped in bad marriages, folks threatened by stalkers, and even those who are just desperately unhappy in their daily lives. Following Wilson's instructions you really can virtually fall off the face of the earth for several weeks up to a year, while you get your head together and figure out what to do next.

Though it's about a very serious topic, the author tosses in some of his own quirky humor and observations which make the book fun to read as well as enlightening. Recommended to anyone interested in privacy protection.

The growing frequency of peaceful expansions of human rights, private property, and market capitalism lead many to consider violent revolutions a thing of the past. In light of, for example, the dismantling of the Soviet Empire, the reunification of Germany, and the Czechoslovakian "velvet Revolution," violence as a mechanism for institutional change seems immoral and counterproductive, an anachronism in our age of global economies and shuttle diplomacy. Arno Mayer takes a contrarian position in The Furies: Violence and Terror in the French and Russian Revolutions. Throughout his comparative study, he maintains that "there is no revolution without violence and terror." Contrary to popular belief, Mayer argues, ideologies and personalities did not control events. Rather, the tide of violence overwhelmed the political actors who assumed power, and even the best-laid plans could not stem the chaos.

Mayer structures his study around what he considers integral components of revolution: civil and foreign war, iconoclasm and religious conflict, and collision between city and country. The Furies begins with a theoretical examination of revolution in general, counterrevolution, violence, terror, vengeance, and religion. Its second portion offers a close comparison of the revolutions in 1789 France and 1917 Russia, following each from their outbreak to the foreign and civil wars that ensued. Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University, Mayer belongs to the major league of heavy-hitting academic historians, and to a large degree, The Furies is written for his colleagues. Footnote heavy, it assumes a studied familiarity with both revolutions, and Mayer's abundant theoretical references quickly frustrate the lesser informed. However, in maintaining the integrality of violence in revolution, Mayer challenges many unexamined assumptions about the two most influential revolutions of modern times, and he forces reexamination of the nature of violence in the revolutionary process. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack

                        Book Description

The great romance and fear of bloody revolution--strange blend of idealism and terror--have been superseded by blind faith in the bloodless expansion of human rights and global capitalism. Flying in the face of history, violence is dismissed as rare, immoral, and counterproductive. Arguing against this pervasive wishful thinking, the distinguished historian Arno J. Mayer revisits the two most tumultuous and influential revolutions of modern times: the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Although these two upheavals arose in different environments, they followed similar courses. The thought and language of Enlightenment France were the glories of western civilization; those of tsarist Russia's intelligentsia were on its margins. Both revolutions began as revolts vowed to fight unreason, injustice, and inequality; both swept away old regimes and defied established religions in societies that were 85% peasant and illiterate; both entailed the terrifying return of repressed vengeance. Contrary to prevalent belief, Mayer argues, ideologies and personalities did not control events. Rather, the tide of violence overwhelmed the political actors who assumed power and were rudderless. Even the best plans could not stem the chaos that at once benefited and swallowed them. Mayer argues that we have ignored an essential part of all revolutions: the resistances to revolution, both domestic and foreign, which help fuel the spiral of terror.

In his sweeping yet close comparison of the world's two transnational revolutions, Mayer follows their unfolding--from the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Bolshevik Declaration of the Rights of the Toiling and Exploited Masses; the escalation of the initial violence into the reign of terror of 1793-95 and of 1918-21; the dismemberment of the hegemonic churches and religion of both societies; the "externalization" of the terror through the Napoleonic wars; and its "internalization" in Soviet Russia in the form of Stalin's "Terror in One Country." Making critical use of theory, old and new, Mayer breaks through unexamined assumptions and prevailing debates about the attributes of these particular revolutions to raise broader and more disturbing questions about the nature of revolutionary violence attending new foundations.

"The revolutions - like Saturn - devour its own sons"

The violence and terror in the French and Russian revolutions are separated by a period of almost a century and a third. But the French revolution carved in relief and some how the conscious of the collective in the political decision take, as well as the introduction for the first time in the history of three concepts that sounded much more metaphorically that realistically, liberty, equality and fraternity.

The author examines zealously many conceptual signposts such as revolution, vengeance, violence and terror, from a enriched perspective where he makes a lucid revision of the implicit facts derived from these poetic ideas, that not only shocked the world but the way it was molded by this fact.

It's useless to affirm the echoes of the French revolution to the light of just two hundred years and two decades, is less than nothing in the history. The inherited paradigms, the wrong beliefs and distorted concepts have generated between other the nationalism fever that altered radically the sociopolitical geography of four continents, besides altered the cultural development all over Europe and seeded new horizons into Philosophy, art and religion; also it accelerated the process of other political movements (The boxers in China, for instance) but even its influence in the happen of both World Wars as well as the significance of liberation in the ancient colonies for better or worst, the emancipation and adhesion of Turkey into the same entrails of the Western hemisphere in the second decade of XX century, among other consequences. But there is so much conceptual material to discuss, state and argue that this little review is simply quite short to intend to expose, that it's better to take a profound reading around this invaluable essay that claimed for being exposed.

A text of maxim interest for all kind of readers.

Arno Mayer's "The Furies" show the qualities that were present in his two previous works on, respectively, pre-1914 Europe and the Holocaust. They are based on secondary sources, and they clearly articulate a theme that had been percolating through the historiography of their subject. "The Furies" is a comparative history of the French and English revolutions and is divided into five parts. The first deals with "conceptual signposts" such as revolution, counterrevolution, violence, terror, vengeance and religion. The second part is an overview of the process of the terror, the third looks at "metropolitian condescension and rural distrust," the fourth looks at the revolutions' challenges to the bigotry of the established church and the fifth looks at the international context of Napoleon and Stalin.

Why did the Furies arise? Mayer emphasizes such aggravating factors as domestic and foreign counter-revolution, the collapse of the old state, and personal and popular vengenace. There was considerable ideological fanaticism, but it was as much effect as cause of the violence. On Russia he declares "Even in normal times, let alone in a time of troubles, Russia defied governance as a single unit--a single sovereignty--by virtue not only of its sheer expanse but also its bewildering diversity of cultures, its uneven levels of development, its primitive state of transport, and its encumbrance by a torpid peasant world. The rich but refractory endowment of vastness, diversity, and unsimultaneity was at least as burdensome as the enduring deficit of democratic thought and praxis." (233-34)

Although there is much to be said that for that last statment, ultimately this is a disappointing book. A synthesis is rarely more than the sum of its part and Mayer's work suffers from the fact that the literature on French and Russian terror is less sophisticated than work on, say, the Holocaust. Mayer cannot read Russian, and while he can read French he is not an expert on 18th century French history. Much of the book consists of competent, uninspired narrative detailing the course of atrocities (but oddly enough omits the Prairial executions).

There are other conceptual weaknesses. Mayer states (4) that revolutions cannot exist without religious conflict. But the Chinese civil war and revolution cannot really be considered one. His discussion of peasant rebellion in France does not emphasize that much of Peasant France either did not rebel or did support the republic (326-28). He dismisses the American revolution as insufficiently revolutionary (26) on the grounds that it was a "restoration"; but this begs the question of how the American colonies received these glorious institutions in the first place.

The comparative discussion on Napoleon and Stalin is too long (533-701) and much of it consists of padded history. Oddly enough Mayer does not mention Orlando Figes' vicious circle of conscription: the Bolsheviks needed to form an army but economic crisis made them unable to feed it. So mass desertion resulted, requiring further conscription and more strains on the economy. Nor does he mention the arguments of Lars Lih and William G. Rosenberg on the pervasiveness of the economic crisis.

More could have be done to criticize the ideological determinism of the Furet school. More use could have been made of Timothy Tackett's massively documented work on the National Assembly and about their pragmatic, non-philosophe nature. Mayer could have mentioned Barry Shapiro and the moderate attitude of the 1789-91 authorities to rumours of counter-revolutionary plots. He could have noted Emma Rothschild's portrait of a pluralist, liberal Condorcet. On the other hand Mayer does point out that Burke stated before the outbreak of the war that the revolutionaries had no right to expect civilized warfare (121). It is interesting to hear de Tocqueville complain that the philosophes are unfairly denigrated in contemporary France (46). It is important to notes that when Pope Pius VI condemned the Civil Constitution of the clergy he not only criticized its ham-handed nature but the very idea of granting non-Catholics toleration at all (427-30). Mayer does remind us that counter-revolutionaries are more than capable of terror, and one should remember the 20,000 slaughtered by the Russians in one day in Warsaw in 1794, or the 30,000 killed when Britian suppresed an Irish bid for independence in 1798. One should especially remember the 150,000 Haitians who died (30% of the total) resisting Napoleon's attempt to re-establish slavery there. In conclusion there is much to be said for the thesis, but the argument could use more work.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating study of counter-revolutionary violence.......2001-08-04

In this book, Mayer studies the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian Revolution of 1917. He seeks to explain why the peoples made these great revolutionary advances, and also why the nobility fought to destroy them and to restore the savage old orders. He studies the role of religion in the counter-revolutions, particularly the Papacy's bitter hostility to the Revolutions, compared to its notorious slap on the wrist for the Nazi counter-revolution. He cites Michelet's famous remark that the numbers killed by the Spanish Inquisition in just one province of Spain far exceeded the number killed by those defending France and its Revolution. The Inquisition was the crowning revelation of Christianity's ingrained violence, its hostility to people who dared to think for themselves, and to think differently from the Church: for six centuries, the leaders of the Catholic Church ordered the killing of millions of men and women for the glory of God. After the French Revolution, the British ruling class organised the foreign counter-revolutionary war. This enormously increased the economic, social and military difficulties faced by the new Government. Later in the war, Napoleon continued France's defence against the counter-revolution, upheld the Revolution's destruction of the nobility's privileges, and extended its gains abroad. After the end of World War One, the rulers of the British, US and French states united in `helping the Whites overthrow the Bolshevik regime', as Mayer writes. Their intervention prolonged the civil war, enormously increasing the suffering of the Soviet people, and adding to the huge economic, social and military difficulties faced by the new Government. Stalin played a key part in defending the Soviet Union against the Intervention; later, he expanded the Revolution's gains and, after defeating Hitler's counter-revolutionary intervention, extended these gains to the nations of Eastern Europe. However, studies that focus on the violence and terror involved in counter-revolutions, even those studies, like Mayer's, that explain why people defended their countries' Revolutions, tend to overlook those Revolutions' tremendous achievements. Of course, people fought to survive the furies of the counter-revolution, but they also fought to build better societies, and they succeeded.

                            Book Description

Since its inception in 1915, the Best American series has become the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction and nonfiction. For each volume, a series editor reads pieces from hundreds of periodicals, then selects between fifty and a hundred outstanding works. That selection is pared down to the twenty or so very best pieces by a guest editor who is widely recognized as a leading writer in his or her field. This unique system has helped make the Best American series the most respected -- and most popular -- of its kind. The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2002, edited by Natalie Angier, is another "eclectic, provocative collection" (Entertainment Weekly). Malcolm Gladwell, Joy Williams, Barbara Ehrenreich, Burkhard Bilger, Dennis Overbye, and many more of the best and brightest writers on science and nature explore such topics as the rise and fall of Islamic science, disappearing cancers, and the meaning of mountain lions in the back yard.

3 out of 5 stars Great examples with not so great examples.......2005-08-11

As a newcomer into the scientific writing world I decided to read as many articles as I could in order to understand how a scientist writes. As with most entities in the world there are two sides. Among the heavy science journals I found the collection of The Best American Science (and Nature) Writing of. . . whenever. These books gave a profound identity to the literary science writer. Such talent is important in these days so as not to cause separation; as if those who can stay awake through an entire article are a better being than the rest. I reached this book after two publications and having been ushered to the doorstep of science writing which shows one the importance of heavy data and equations. Though this book has some fantastic writing it only stands above the surface of an ocean of knowledge. It's good to read but lacks so much.

3 out of 5 stars Good writing, but very little science.......2005-06-24

The writing in this collection is uniformly good, but there's precious little science. Most of the articles are dominated by a kind of gossipy tone about the people involved without ever actually touching on the science. For example, one of the longest pieces in the book is a review of the Intelligent Design debate from the New York Review of Books. It talks a lot about the politics and supposed motivations of the players, with a long discourse on Stephen J. Gould's atheistic approach to theology- but not once does the author touch on the scientific aspects of the debate. I assume the reader is expected to accept the anti-ID position simply as a consequence of being a Review reader.

No doubt the selection of articles was highly influenced by the editor's particular tastes and skills. Natalie Angier is a skilled writer, and her New Yorker pieces are always well crafted, but when it comes to science she's a lightweight. You won't see an equation, or even a number in any of her pieces, and the same is true, for the most part, of the pieces selected for this anthology.

As a collection of casual readings for the person with no scientific background at all, I'd give this volume a B; for the reader looking for some depth, some explanation of current issues in science- D.

This series is awesome! An anthology such as this allows the reader to get a taste of some wonderful articles without the possibly harrowing search for the diamond in the rough. All articles are well written and the subject matter is diverse. A true treat!

4 out of 5 stars a new year of science.......2003-02-26

The Best American Science and Nature Writing series is always a great joy to pick up. This is the way to keep up with general science without spending hundreds of dollars on magazines and journals (well, not really, but it is a good series of books to read). This year Natalie Angier, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of _Woman: An Intimate Geography_ is the guest editor. None of the essays stand out as newborn classics, but they are good essays. And they cover the range of fields.

Anthropology - Sarah Blaffer Hrdy's "Mothers and Others"

Biology - Frederick C. Crews' "Saving Us from Darwin" originally published in The New York Review of Books (Crews attacks every form of creationism and the blending of science and religion, including Gould, but offers us no alternative idea or solution-that's what kept this essay from being an instant classic); H. Bruce Franklin's "The Most Important Fish in the Sea" (ecology/conservation science); Gordon Grice's "Is That a Mountain Lion in Your Backyard?"; "The Dirt in the New Machine" by Blaine Harden (which is both an ecology and technology essays); "Life's Rocky Start", an essay on the origin of life on earth and the importance of minerals, by Robert M. Hazen; Anne Matthews' "Wall Street Losses, Wall Street Gains" which is about birdwatching and the World Trade Towers; Chet Raymo "A Little Reminder of Reality's Scale" (a brief piece from the Boston Globe); Peter Stark's embarrassing piece (at least he should be embarrassed by this half poorly written `fiction' with facts on jellyfish-the most poisonous one there is) titled "The Sting of the Assassin"; Joy Williams' "One Acre" about her little plot in Florida that she tried to keep ecologically safe and sound

Medicine - Barbara Ehrenreich's essay about her fight with breast cancer "Welcome to Cancerland" (a great essay that is also included in the Best American Essays"; Gary Greenberg's touching essay "As Good as Dead" (about a young boy who has a brain tumor in his head and his incredible courage to continue living and dreaming and planning for his future); Judith Newman's"I Have Seen Cancer's Disappear"

Psychology - Roy F. Baumeister's "Violent Pride" (written in a pseudo-highschool-science fair report style. This could have been a great study, but...): Malcolm Gladwell's "Examined Life" (about the SATs and test taking); "Dumb, Dumb, Duh Dumb" by Steve Mirsky (again, about our test scores); Daniel Smith "Shock and Disbelief" which is about ECT of things-yes, the pros of electroconvulsive therapy

Physics - K.C. Cole's "Mind Over Matter" (originally in the L.A. Times); the heavy material of Dark Matter by Karen Wright ("Very Dark Energy" which first appeared in Discover

Computers - Clive Thompson's "The Know-It-All Machine" which goes into artificial intelligence

And the others: Burkhard Bilger's essay on eating odd animals, "Braised Shank of Free-Range Possum"; "In the Realm of Virtual Reality" by Richard Conniff and Harry Marshall, which discusses pseudozoology (creatures like the Yeti and such); Garret Keizer's essay on sound and noise, "Sound and Fury" (from Harper's); Verlyn Klinkenborg's odd newspaper column, "The Pursuit of Innocence in the Golden State", which is about California, but more on a two sentence sociological statement; Robert Kunzig's "Ripe for Controversy" which discusses cheese and health regulations' Dennis Overbye's "How Islam Won, and Lost, the Lead in Science" ; Eric Schlosser's "Why McDonald's Fries Taste So Good"

and above all, these essays are easy enough for the layperson, but good for the expert as well.

                              Book Description

The large-scale destruction of tropical rain forests is one of the most important environmental issues of the late twentieth century. The bulk of the remaining forest is to be found in the Amazon Basin, largely in Brazil, where the rapid expansion of cattle ranching has been implicated as the main cause of irreversible deforestation over the last decade. This book analyzes the economic, agronomic and environmental evidence for the benefits and costs of cattle ranching in the Amazon region. The author provides a survey of the ecology of the Amazon rain forest, the methods of economic valuation of forests, the agricultural systems in the Amazon, the history and underlying causes of its colonization and the effects on land use, and the extent of deforestation. Combining this information with his extensive field work in Brazil, the author then gives a detailed description of the cattle ranching systems in the Amazon, their economics and effects on the forest; he concludes with an evaluation of the region's potential for sustainable cattle production.
