Book Description
The close of the 20th century saw a remarkably high incidence of bank distress and insolvency. This book seeks to identify the causes of this ongoing financial crisis and to draw lessons for the future, with the aim of assisting developed, transition and emerging economies alike to better cope with future crises. Banks in Distress takes as its focus the major financial system crisis experienced by the US in the 1980s, reviewing the evolution of the US banking system and the legislative, regulatory, and monetary policies of the 1980s which set the stage for the crises that followed. The author argues that the financial difficulties in the US, and to some extent the rest of the world, were largely precipitated and exacerbated by government intervention into the American domestic economy through uncoordinated monetary and fiscal policy, as well as the uncoordinated enactment of regulatory, supervisory and enforcement legislation and policy. The book in particular examines the importance of asset valuation, asset value inflation and deflation, and capital adequacy for banking and financial services organizations, an understanding of which is crucial to the development of a coherent regulatory framework. The author considers what can be learned from the US experience and suggests the need for significant changes in the banking law and policy of most developed and emerging economies, arguing that a stable and workable financial system requires transparent, coordinated and proactive governmental policies in the banking, fiscal, monetary and national economic areas.

Book Description
During evolution silica deposition has been used in Protozoa, Metazoa and in plants as skeletal elements. It appears that the mechanisms for the formation of biogenic silica have evolved independently in these three taxa. In Protozoa and plants biosilicification appears to be primarily driven by non-enzymatic processes and procedes on organic matrices. In contrast, in sponges (phylum Porifera) this process is mediated by enzymes; the initiation of this process is likewise dependent on organic matrices.
In this monograph the role of biosilica as stabilizing structures in different organisms is reviewed and their role for morphogenetic processes is outlined. It provides an up-to-date summary of the mechanisms by which polymeric biosilica is formed. The volume is intended for biologists, biochemists and molecular biologists, involved in the understanding of structure formation in living organisms and will also be very useful for scientists working in the field of applied Nanotechnology and Nanobiotechnology.

Book Description
In September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data centre (IDC), and on-site inspections, to verify compliance. A global hydroacoustic monitoring system is being planned and implemented for verification of the CTBT. Much of the research conducted over the past several decades on acoustic surveillance of the oceans, formerly driven by the need to detect and track submarines, is now being applied to the development of effective monitoring methods to verify compliance with the CTBT. The aim of this volume on Hydroacoustic Monitoring of the CTBT is to summarize the research being conducted in this field and to provide basic references for future research. Much of the new research emphasizes major advances in understanding the coupling of ocean acoustic waves with elastic waves in the solid Earth. Topics covered include source excitation, detection and classification of events generating hydroacoustic signals, discrimination between underwater explosions and naturally occurring events, as well as topics in coupling of acoustic to seismic wavefields.

Book Description
Scattering experiments, using X-ray, light and neutron sources (in historical order) are key techniques for studying structure and dynamics in systems containing colliods, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules, summarized here as soft condensed matter. The education in this field in Europe is very heterogeneous and frequently inadequate, which severely limits an efficient use of these methods, especially at large-scale facilities. The series of "Bombannes" schools and the completely revised and updated second edition of the lecture notes are devoted to a practical approach to current methodology of static and dynamic techiques. Basic information on data interpretation, on the complementarity of the different types of radiation, as well as information on recent applications and developments is presented. The aim is to avoid over - as well as under-exploitation of data.

Book Description
What happens when a woman who wants her freedom meets a man who wants to love, honor, cherish--and change diapers?
Meet Charlie Feldman. An almost-handsome fortysomething sportswriter whose biological daddy clock is ticking loud and clear. Charlie wants a baby. Badly.
Enter Lacy Gazzar, a sexy, feisty thirtysomething who's about to send her daughter off to college and finally dive into a grown-up life all her own. Lacy's more than happy to help Charlie in his search for the perfect mommy. She's willing to aid him through a hilarious and sometimes humiliating round of personal ads, relentless blind dates, and absolutely appalling encounters. The one thing she isn't willing to do is have Charlie's baby.
But then they become friends. Really good friends. And one hot, magical, moonlit night--well, let's just say accidents will happen.
What comes next is laugh-out-loud, cry-your-eyes-out proof that the course of true love never runs smoothly--and the best-made plans between a man and a woman almost always go wonderfully awry.
Customer Reviews:
Dropping the ball.......2003-04-07
This was a great book, if you count the ending. The characters are funny, and the style is pretty good if you don't count the stunted switches between narrators. The plot was definitely interesting enough to keep me, but the ending leaves much to be desired. In fact, half of this book bugs me to no end, and despite them being pretty decent characters, what they agree to will make you furious. However, knowing that romance novels generally have happy endings, I persevered and was disappointed when Judy Markey completely dropped the ball. In the very last seconds of the book, she patched up everything with minimal cohesiveness. In other words, I couldn't imagine the characters doing what they ended up doing. Without a more drawn out ending, this book is not worth the time.
Read it (or listen to the cassette) if you have little else to do, but you're better off with a more stable romance novelist like Jayne Ann Krentz or going and renting yourself a romantic comedy.
Give this book a chance.......2002-05-04
If you read the editorial and site reviewers, you've got a clue what this book is about. I read this when it was first published, I hunted through the public library to get the unabridged audio version for a road trip. This a book I come back to now and then as a comfort read/listen. The dialogue is bright, snappy and edgy, and the characters are real to me. The female protagonist is not an easy person, I think it takes compassion and a bit of darkness in onself to understand the attraction of a "difficult" woman. I appreciate the first person viewpoint, especially with respect to Charlie, much of what the author has him say about men is true to the way they think and express themselves amongst themselves. The cursing, the companionable silence, the simultaneous contradiction of male vulnerability to and dismissiveness of women. One of the key attractions of this book for me is that Markey doesn't wrap this into a predictable HEA ending. Any number of things could happen to the characters, but the nice thing, for Charlie, his clock started ticking in a different rhythm. Yeah, I did give this 3 stars, three stars is good.
No Romance.......2001-12-15
I can't say that I enjoyed this book very much. It started out with promise, but it lost all appeal for me about halfway though. For one thing, there was very little romance, or mutual attraction between the characters. They were kind-of attracted to each other, but nothing solid. Even at the end, I was not quite sure if the two of them were going to get together.
The story revolves around a 44-year-old bachelor (Charlie Feldman) who has an overwhelming urge to find a wife and start a family. Lacy Gazzar, who is a co-worker, befriends Charlie and coaches him on the dos and don'ts of parenting (she has a 17-year old daughter), relationships, writing personal ads, etc., etc. Well one thing leads to another and Lacy ends up pregnant. The big problem is that Lacy is not sure if Charlie is the father of the baby (it could be the child of a guy she goes line-dancing with). Lacy agrees to have the baby as long as Charlie takes full responsibility for it, and she does not have to acknowledge or in any way associated with it. She even tries to illegally remove her name from the baby's birth certificate. Lacy definitely had some issues.
I also found the First Person style of writing very confusing. Normally I enjoy first person, but in this book both Lacy and Charlie were narrating. When I would start a new chapter or section, it would always take me a few sentences to figure out if it was Charlie or Lacy speaking. They both refer to themselves as "I", so I would have to figure out from the content who was speaking. Granted, each chapter was labeled with a date and a name (Lacy or Charlie), but I still found the style confusing and annoying.
Nice book to spend a late evening or weekend with........2000-08-05
Very enjoyable and light ; the kind of book I wish there were more of just for a little enjoyment away from all the deep thoughts we have to indulge today. These characters became my friends as I read. I can't wait for Judy's next book and hope it will be just as enjoyable. Also hope she is working on a third novel.
Easy reading.......2000-05-09
This is an enjoyable book that is easy to read and relatively funny along the way, but the ending could have been dealt with better. This is a fun and light book to read if you have nothing better to do on a Sunday, but I certainly won't be running to the bookstore when this author publishes another book.

SR-71 REVEALED - The Inside Story.......2006-09-21
Wow! Now this is what I'm talking about! You don't know anything about the SR-71 program unless you flew the plane, served in the units, or read this book! OK, you may not be as knowledgable as the people who walked the walk, but at least this is the closest you'll ever come to it! This book is full of details about the plane, its technical details (almost 50 packed pages!), the missions, the life in the Squadron or at the Detachments, the people who flew it, you name it, you'll learn it from this book. Nowhere else you can learn the intricate details about the unstart/restart cycle, spike and inlet management, IGV shifts, manipulating the forward and aft bypass doors, ADS failure, DAFICS, bank angle management, etc. I'm telling you, this book is full of riveting information! I particularily liked the short stories contributed by other Habus, sharing their experiences, excitements, ups and downs, etc. Good job Colonel! The author skillfully conveys the shear professionalism of the SR-71 crews and support personnel, and shares many stories that will take you back to the haydays of the Blackbird. He shares the good, the bad, and the fantastic! I agree, it was a loss to lose the program in 1990, but time had changed and maybe the Cold War justified it but by the fall of the CCCP it became impossible to need 25 tankers for one SR-71 mission. The changing times passed by a Cold War giant, even if it could fly M3+ and equipped with SENIOR KING. Thanks for sharing the memories, I think I'll go back to page one and start reading again!
As much of the amazing story as we will probably ever know.......2001-11-18
For those who have never heard of the plane, this book would be merely interesting. To those with a healthy respect of the plane, its crews, and its mission, Col. Graham has written the book that beats all. This effort clearly covers the devlopment of the plane and its daily operations, all of which were cloaked in the highest secrecy of the Cold War. Graham, involved with the plane for most of his career, has a unique persepctive, and takes his reader through "the way it was."
I really loved this book and the stories involved. Thanks to the types of missions flown, it will be years before the full story come sout, but until then, read this book.
SR-71 Revealed.......2001-09-05
Appears to be Very Factual- My information was from a little bit
earlier period, 1975 to 1980. I Recognized and remembered many of the people right away. My Point of view was from the tankers that refueled the HABU pilots. Not really stressed was the fact that the SR-71 did go to far without a formation of tankers keeping it full of fuel. It's definietly a shame that some of the
higher up in SAC din't see the value of the program. Overall this was a really good book- hard to put down.
Great Book !!!.......2001-06-08
Having been to many of the places noted in the book and having followed the SR-71 from it's earlist days as a U.S.A.F flyer myself I couldn't put the book down until itwas finished. Another fine job Col.Graham.
Technical and Historical Aspects of the Plane.......2001-03-30
Wow is one of the many words that describe this book. It is a memoirs of the SR-71, told in a story-telling manner which won't allow you to put the book down. The level of detail Col. Graham goes into is spectacular. He tells of others many experiences of the SR-71 as well as his own. Like when traveling at mach 3, how a sunset would rise and when they slowed down it would set again. It makes one realize that the SR-71 is the Icon of American ingenuity as well as military might.

Book Description
Since earliest days, humans have found it impossible to resist the allure of the unknown. The reasons are as different as the people are. Here, in one volume, Explorations captures in photographs and interviews the expeditions and emotions of some of the most daring adventurers of the last century.
Organized according to geographical region, and accompanied by essays by such famous names as Wilfred Thesiger, Richard Leakey, and Edmund Hillary, the photographs offer a fascinating glimpse of the world's varied landscapes and habitats, its peoples, and ways of life. Some of the pictures recall historic moments in time--Scott finding Amundsen's empty tent at the South Pole, Tenzing Norgay photographed by Hillary on the peak of Everest, the ferryman who took David Livingstone across the river on the last day of his life. Other pictures are remarkable as records of vanished or vanishing peoples, or simply as beautiful pieces of art.
The history of the Royal Geographic Society and that of photography were born in the same decade. The invention of photography became an indispensable tool for explorers and travelers, enabling them to make a visual record of what they saw. Many of the photographs they took have found their way into the society's priceless photographic collection and form the basis of this stunning book.

Book Description
This is an introduction to the theory and applications of modern geometry. It differs from other books in its field in its emphasis on applications and its discussion of Special Relativity as a major example of a non-Euclidean geometry. Besides Special Relativity, it covers two other important ares of non-Euclidean goemetry: spherical geometry (used in navigation and astronomy) and projective geometry (used in art). In addition, it reviews many useful topics from Euclidean geometry, emphasizing transformations, and includes a chapter on conics and planetary orbits. Applications are stressed throughout the book. Every topic is motivated by an application and many additional applications are given in the exercises. The book would be an excellent introduction to higher geometry for those students, especially prospective mathematics and teachers, who need to know how geometry is used in addition to its formal theory.
Customer Reviews:
Amateurish.......2007-03-21
Chapter 1 on Euclidean geometry displays the author's poor taste as well as his profound misconception of what it means to prove something. We learn on page 19 that the area of a triangle is (1/2)(base)(height). The only justification for this is that it is "often" clear by cutting and pasting. Fine. We don't have to prove every little thing. But then there follows a "proposition 1.8.1" in which Jennings supposedly "proves", by using this formula, that moving the tip of a triangle along a line parallel to the base doesn't change its area. Jennings is also very fond of isometries and use them to "prove" SAS congruence. Since the discussion of isometries is purely descriptive, with no claims to axiomatic status, this essentially amounts to saying that "the triangles are congruent because I say so", no matter how much it is padded with fancy language (let T be the isometry such that this-and-that, etc.). Although this proof is questionable, at least here Jennings is in the company of Euclid (I.4). But Jennings quickly proves himself unworthy of such dignified company by proving SSS using the cosine theorem, which is certainly not Euclid's proof (I.8). Some other parts of the book are less disastrous, especially when Jennings borrows lots of material from Courant & Robbins and Hilbert & Cohn-Vossen. Still, Jennings almost manages to destroy even these beautiful things through thoroughly tasteless exposition; the proofs typically consist of elaborate justifications of trivial details by mountains of useless symbolism while the key ideas are not addressed at all ("It is important to note that [something completely trivial]: this is because blah, blah, blah, define L(z_4*), blah, blah, blah. It is clear that [important step], so we're done."). It is also ridiculous to claim that "projective geometry blossomed during the eighteenth [century]" (p. 115).
Excellent elementary introduction to modern geometry.......2004-03-10
I am a Ph.D student in the field of symplectic geometry and topology. This book introduces the foundations of modern geometry in a beautiful and a very clear way,and I am saying this having some experience with geometry and topology books. If you are a skilled high school student or an under graduate student for mathematics or related area, this is a good book to start with in understanding what is modern geometry. The level of the book is about undergraduate level using very elementary notions. The content of the book is: Euclidean geometry and its logical foundations(so one could understand the motivation of the other geometries), Sphirical geometry, conic sections,Projective geometry, and the ending chapter is about the geometrical foundations of special relativity. The approach is not theorem-proof style but rather a more intuitive approch!. This is a recommended book.
