Amazon.com Reviews
T. Berry Brazelton is a knowledgeable physician with years of experience with thousands of children, and he brings that experience to bear on virtually every issue faced by families with kids, from birth through age 3. In this sterile age of managed care, Brazelton provides the kindly, reassuring approach of your own family physician--a physician living in your own home, on your own bookshelf. Touchpoints provides chronological accounts of the basic stages of early childhood, presents (in alphabetical reference form) the challenges to development, and explores the important role of each person--father, mother, caregiver--in a child's life.

Wise Words from a Sage Doctor.......2007-07-26
Of all the parenting books I have, this is the only one I return to again and again. It's excellent counsel through and through, and you can hear the relaxed wisdom from a doctor who has been around a long time. Dr. Brazelton understands the way young children think and learn, and that informs his approach to them- always respectful, yet firm, reasonable, and loving. He addresses every stage of development by the child's age/main doc visits, which is so great. The book helps me to think about why my daughter does what she does, not just trying to stop her. I highly recommend this as part of every parent's parenting library.
what would i do without this book?.......2007-05-27
indeed, essential reading!! for any parent who wants to understand their child (and most do), this is the book. it tackles this from a behavioral pov, and dr brazelton gives many, many examples found during his practice and clinical trials. very practical, and in many ways, comforting, becuase i go into parenthood feeling like i'm armed with much more understading of how my baby will develop, the touchpoints he/she will hit, why, and how they are best dealt with.
i love this book! it's my favorite of all the parenting books i've read.
Berry Brazelton is the Best!.......2007-03-17
Dr. Brazelton's books guided my through the first years of my son's life twenty-six years ago. His books continue to be my top choice as a gift for new moms. His advise is caring and practical and takes into account (broadly) the different types of personalities babies come with and how best to nurture and cope with the unique needs of each child.
Love it! .......2007-02-18
I just love brazelton & sears when it comes to parenting advice...those are the two best Docs out there!!! IMHO.
If you need some guidance in child rearing this book is for yoU!!!
Very helpful, especially with a difficult toddler.......2006-11-29
I bought this book along with a few others (what to expect when you're expecting, etc.) prior to having our first son. My wife and I have used it many times to help us out with difficult behaviors. When we reach a point with the kids where we're getting the same results no matter what we try -- we look it up in Touchpoints. In most cases, we've used the advice almost word for word (even the touchy-feely stuff) and the results have always been positive. The book always provides perspective from the child's point of view, which is very helpful. This one should be on the book shelf of any young child's parent.

Book Description
The knowledge economy conjures a world of smart people, in smart jobs, doing smart things, in smart ways, for smart money, a world increasingly open to all rather than a few. Glossy corporate brochures present a future in challenging, exciting and financially rewarding jobs for the winners in the competition for fast track management appointments. They also convey an image of enlightened employers actively seeking to diversify their talent pool, reflected in their approach to identifying, hiring and retaining outstanding talent. We are told that the challenge confronting governments around the world is to enhance the employability of the workforce. Every effort must be made to expand access to higher education, dismantle barriers to talent regardless of social circumstances, gender, or skin colour, and to harness human creativity and enterprise to meet the demands of the new economy. The Mismanagement of Talent comes to a different conclusion. Those leaving the world of mass higher education find themselves in a scramble for jobs with rising stakes for the winners and losers. The Mismanagement of Talent examines what determines the outcome of this race when a degree loses its badge of distinction. It shows how some graduates are playing 'the game' to win a competitive advantage and what really happens in the selection events of leading-edge employers. It also argues that talent is being mismanaged by employers that have yet to come to terms with the realities and possibilities of mass higher education. The Mismanagement of Talent will be thought-provoking and controversial reading for those involved in the recruitment of graduates, and those concerned with the way knowledge-based firms recruit and the impact of higher education policy: Professionals working in university careers services, HRM, training, or recruitment generally; Researchers, academics, or students of Business and Management, Human Resource Management, Public Policy, Education, or Sociology; and Job candidates themselves - the 'players' and 'purists' described in the book.

A History of Keyboard Literature: Music for the Piano and Its Forerunners presents a comprehensive and easily accessible history of literature for all stringed keyboard instruments.
Customer Reviews:
The Key to Keyboard Literature.......2000-03-27
Gordon's "History of Keyboard Literature" sits next to Grout/Palisca's "History of Western Music" on my shelf. As a student studying piano and a future educator, I have found the book to be a great resource. One who sits at the either the piano, organ, or harpsichord must be familiar with the vast history and repertoire written for keyboard instruments. The book is organized chronilogically. It begins with a very satisfying history of the development and construction of early keyboard instruments as well as a thourough overview of the role of the keyboard up to the end of the Renaissance. After this it takes a composer by composer approach chronilogically starting with Bach and Handel. Published in 1996, this book is very up to date and provides many names, especially twentieth century composers. Like any history book, this is not the final word on the subject of keyboard music, but it is an excellent first stop for whatever research one is up to. A must for any pianists shelf.

Dan Gookin's C for Dummies is a two-volume tutorial for beginner C programmers that looks at the basics of programming from the ground up. It moves at a slow, but very logical, pace. If you've ever found traditional C programming books too hard, these two books might be worth a look. The author takes great care in presenting the basics of programming from the ground up and avoids complicated math and syntax wherever possible. The first volume covers the fundamentals of the language, such as basic language constructs, variable types, functions, program logic, looping, and simple console I/O. The second half presents more ANSI C functions, arrays, and strings. Only then does the author take on the difficulties of C pointers. The tutorial closes with some file I/O and the basics of using multi-file projects. Throughout these two books, the author succeeds in making programming fun with a lot of humor (including comics) and as little jargon as possible. The technical information is in there too, between the lines, in separate sections. Each chapter ends with a quiz to make sure you are getting all the basics of programming in C (answers are included at the end of volume two). Plenty of source code is provided for all examples. All in all, this set provides a really successful introduction to C programming, which can succeed where other tutorials fail. If you've been stumped by other introduction to C texts, check out these two books.
Book Description
Dan Gookin loves a challenge. He must, otherwise he wouldn't have taken on so daunting a topic as the C programming language. And as you can see from C For Dummies, Volume One, Gookin was definitely up to the task: Right off the bat, this plain-English guide to programming in one of the most widely accepted computer languages can have you coding in C just like a pro. Using your C compiler of choice -- whether it's Borland C++, Turbo C, Microsoft Visual C++, or some other -- you'll get the hang of the basic building blocks of C programs, from printf to scanf. You'll master the C way of doing math and making decisions, as well as declaring and using all types of variables. Best of all, you can count on C For Dummies, Volume One (along with C For Dummies, Volume Two) to provide the best possible foundation as you advance to the latest stage of C evolution, C++
Customer Reviews:
Programming and humor. Two things that have never met until this book........2005-07-15
Dan Gookin makes learning C fun & easy with a bunch of humor. This book is STRONGLY recommended for professionals & beginners. You haven't read a book about C until you've read 'C for Dummies'.
How I got started.......2005-02-27
C for dummies was the first book I purchased (several years ago) to teach myself something about programming a computer. Dan Gookin is a great writer and he even took the time to help with some questions via email as I went through the book.
This book is light weight in tone but a solid heavy weight in content and is a fun read. But don't underestimate this book. If you want to know the basics and have a sold understanding of the basics then this is the book for you. One of the most important things a beginning book must have is lots of "fully coded" examples. Many books will give you a snip-it of code that does't help a beginning programmer. It was great fun, I learned alot and what I learned from Dan Gookin I was able to apply towards learning C++ and Visual Basic.
I would suggest working through this book, practice practice and practice some more. The key is to apply yourself. I worked every project and even combined them. Adding my own twists here and there to make up my own little programs as I worked through this book. When you finish, start working through C for Dummies 2 as it picks up right where the first book ends. Sadly, I had to wait for the second book to be written!! It was worth the wait.
It is all about the desire to learn, no matter how great a book is, without the desire to apply yourself you will not learn. Dan helps break down the resistance barrier and you will find yourself laughing and learning and wanting to learn more the Wambooli way.
I enjoyed this book. I passed it on to my teenager for his first programming book. This book is great for learning the fundamentals of progamming and believe me they apply to all programming languages.
Good for people who "just want to learn C AND ONLY C"... .......2005-01-22
I got this book back in 1998 but had no time to learn it until 2004 fall. -.-'
I had covered vol 1 and is reading vol 2 now and had browsed over the 2nd edition and the all-in-one companion in Borders. The comments are made after my browsing on ALL 3 BOOKS.
Gookin has a way to teach newbies on "hard stuff" but there are good and bad about the book:-
1. Readablity:
The good:- Fun and easy. Definitely a good book for those that feels programming is hard and boring. Dan makes it really enjoyable.
The bad:- Too drag and like some of the reviews had said, waste of time when something that could be explain in 1 page he used 6-8 pages (and more in some topics) to talk it out. Beginners != Idiots.
2. Assumption:
Not good but not very bad either... below satisfatory?:- The author had over assuming about the reader. The book stated that it is a beginner to intermediate level book. When I first open the book, I realised that I have to have a C/C++ compiler readily installed in the computer. Damn! I wouldn't know what a C/C++ compiler if I am a total noob! I ended up spending time finding out what is a compiler and where to get one before I really start learning from the book.
I suggest that a section be devoted to telling where to get a C/C++ compiler will be good. I am currently using Bloodshed's Dev-C++ compiler for Windows. I am learning Linux now and naturely it comes with a C/C++ compiler.
3. Coverage on different Operating Systems:
Bad:- It covers programming in DOS prompt only. Forget about programming in Windows environment, Mac, UNIX and Linux. I got to know how to compile the source codes in Linux in another C programming book (don't bother to ask about that book. That sucks even more!).
Perhaps Dan was devoted to focus on teaching C only but the truth is that some of the examples (those that called for BIOS functions) could not be compile in WinXP environment. I tried on Linux but in Linux, it does not have conio.h and linux.h file. So then again, what are the alternative header files are we going to use if we are Linux O/S users?
Even if Dan is limited by the pages he is allocated to write the book or by whatsoever limitation for not explaining C programming for Windows. I think an introductory lesson should be taught and then recommand the users to read more by buying other books on Win Programming. He did the latter but flopped the formal.
I am currently at a bottle neck of my learning of C due to the BIOS function thing and have to get another book on programming C for windows to continue my learning on C. Kind of suck! I hope I can find a good book. -.-'
Waste of time.......2004-02-28
This book was a complete waste of time for me. It barely teaches you anything after reading the first volume. What took 1000 pages in this book I can learn in in 100 pages of another book. The author uses so much humor in this book that it gets extremely frustrating. For example, in the quizes after each section he gives a question with multiple choice answers. There are amazingly stupid answers to choose from leaving you with only one logical answer. He might as well just give you the answer rather than writing down bs. He repeats each example over and over again which makes it frustrating. I found myself repeating the same things withouth learning anything new. The only time I would recommend this book if you were some moron who has an iq of 90 and can barely read or if you're a 10 year old and doesn't know what you're doing. It's ridiculous how simple it is he teaches you. It takes the author 20 pages to teach you something you can easily learn in anotehr book in 1 page. I recommend C Primer Plus by Stephen Prata rather than this piece of garbage.
Invaluable for 1st and 2nd year CS majors.......2004-02-19
I'm a 2nd year computer science major and we use K&R (The C Programming Language 2nd Edition ANSI version) in class. I find it incredibly dry and boring, although I suppose it's terse and to the point. C for Dummies can be repetitious at times but I find that I need and appreciate that. And yeah, the quizzes are dumb but who's taking them anyway? I get enough in class. :) The sections on pointers or structures alone are well worth the price of admission. The index is especially well done. It's easy to jump around, scan and use the book as a reference guide. I also like the "cheat sheet" containing hints and tips that you can rip out and keep by your computer.
SIDE NOTES: Even as a neophyte programmer, I was able to jump pretty much straight into Vol. 2, having only a year of Java experience previously. Also, we use unix gcc at the university and Gookin uses Borland C++ and Microsoft Visual C++ to compile. An earlier reviewer seemed to think that excluding gcc was wrong but I don't think it makes much of a difference -- the fundamental concepts and implementations are the same. The header files Gookin uses are the same as the ones we use in class with unix, too. All in all, Gookin's Vol. 2 is a great book. I haven't looked at Vol. 1 at all but I have no regrets buying the 2-volume set.
Book Description
As we near the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the Third Reich, its repressive regime and the catastrophic war it spawned continue to fascinate and horrify the public's imagination. Interrogations: The Nazi Elite in Allied Hands, 1945 fills a gap in the history of the Second World War, allowing us for the first time to witness the initial interrogations of the German high command in the summer of 1945 by the American, British, and Russian allies. It was in these crucial early interviews that the Allies first learned the true nature of the Third Reich and discovered the dimensions of the Nazis' Final Solution.
Acclaimed British historian Richard Overy makes brilliant use of the interrogation transcripts to re-create a picture of Germany in its lowest hour, with snapshot portraits of Göring, Speer, von Ribbentrop, and Hess in their own words.
Through Interrogations, the reader comes face-to-face with a regime in its death throes and with a world struggling to understand what had really been perpetrated within the gigantic fortress of Hitler's reich.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Confronting.......2007-10-09
It's a good read as history and for the legal intrigues but I wasn't warned about the macabre photos. Nonetheless it's well written and good reference material documenting that part of history.
Insight Into Terror.......2007-01-17
While at times overwhelming in both size and scope, "Interrogations: The Nazi Elite in Allied Hands, 1945" is a necessary addition to works about the Holocaust. Richard Overy has done a tremendous job at organizing and summarizing the transcripts taken from Nazi war criminals during the Nuremberg trials. In Part One he clarifies history and sets the stage for Part Two, where the words of the guilty speak for themselves.
To even conceive of a trial of Nazi war criminals was a tremendous undertaking that faced the Allies towards the end of WWII. Knowing that Hitler and his ministers of evil would take the stand in court, they feared that his charisma could sway opinion and break through the flimsy-seeming charges. Perhaps the world was spared this circus event through the cowardice of Hitler and others of his entourage who took their own lives at war's end, but one has to wonder what it would have been like.
The Allies were able to cooperate and create a tribunal to try these war criminals, and spent hours interrogating them to find out their exact knowledge of Hitler and his plans. The flimsiest part of the charge was that of conspiracy to wage aggressive war - there were no documents to support any conspiracy charge, which intelligent and adept Nazi members in prison knew. Yet the Allies pressed ahead, knowing that some men would deny any knowledge, or blame everything upon Hitler or his other dead officers, and in at least one case, feign amnesia to disrupt the interrogations.
What comes across in Part Two of Overy's book is the brazen attitude of all of the men who were tried during this tribunal. Overwhelmingly, these men either denied their roles or took resolute pride in what they accomplished, downplaying the death figures or depicting themselves as turncoats trapped under Hitler's sway with no exit. It is chilling and insightful at the same time to read the testimony of these men, men who murdered millions nonchalantly and knew Hitler intimately. And even though the majority of these men were convicted and executed, it still feels as if justice has not been achieved for the terror that they perpetrated.
Mentality of Atrocity.......2005-09-10
I guess most people ask themselves at some time, how do rational, seemingly decent human beings come to the point of sanctioning, organising and then carrying out the systematic destruction of around 11 million people, (give or take), with 6 million of them being Jewish? It is a tough one, and it is even tougher to understand, should one even want to try understanding it.
"Interrogations" by Richard Overy goes some way into seeing how those brought to trial at Nuremberg dealt with the reality of what they had done and how they tried to explain it. The book gives some background information on the charges brought against them, the people carrying out the interrogations and so on. There are a couple of chapters on individuals such as Goering, Hess and Von Papen. Other chapters are based on topical issues, like genocide, Hitler himself, and so on.
It is interesting the way which legal implications of the trials developed. One example is the way in which organisations themselves were deemed "criminal" and then anyone associated with them was open to arrest. The Nazi prisoners protested the move, of course.
Of the individuals, I found Goering the most fascinating, in the sense that he did not seem to attempt any avoidance of responsibility. Others tried to distance themselves, or in the case of Speer, tried to show himself as a neutral civil servant. Goering never seemed to do that, and just accepted his part in it.
People interested in the Nazi phenomena and the Holocaust of the Jews and other victims of the Nazi death camps, "Interrogations" is "essential reading", as another reviewer stated. Thoroughly engrossing and thoroughly recommended.
Essential reading .......2004-12-02
This book is essential reading for those who have read much of the European theatre of World War II and even more particularly of the Hitler regime. The transcripts of the interrogations and the submitted writings of Albert Speer alone make this book a must read- if you have read enough on these subjects you will recognize the source material the historians have relied upon, including Kershaw's excellent two volume biography of Hitler.
This book covers the gap between the end of WWII in Europe, with Nazi leaders either on the run or committing suicide, and the commencement of the Nuremberg trials. During this interim, a number of interrogations occurred with the principals determined to be culpable and subject to trial. It was very interesting to read the words of those closest to Hitler- Speer, Ribbentrop, Guderian, etc. Ribbentrop, especially, confirms his incompetence during questioning and it is not beyond belief that his defense of ignorance may in fact be true.
But it is Speer to whom the reader will recognize as the most intelligent and competent of the captured. He could not gain closer access to Hitler due to Boerrman in the later years and this may have proved to be a great tragedy for Germany. I will next read his "Inside the Third Reich" given this book.
Overall, an excellent contribution to the history of the Third Reich and highly recommended.
Chilling, insightful.......2004-07-31
There has been much analysis of the deeds, motives and consequences of Germany's Nazis, some of it brilliant, some of it rubbish, much in between. But there is simply no substitute for their actual words.
Thanks to the exhaustive interviews conducted by the allies prepatory to the Nuremberg trials and the organizing and editing skills of Richard Overy, today's readers have easy access to many of those words.
"Interrogations" lays bare the banality of evil, the chilling hate and the mindless obedience of Nazi war criminals. They also present a comprehensive account of the workings of Nazi Germany, including the leadership of Adolph Hitler. More so then in his own writings, Hitler's architect, Albert Speer provides a richly detailed account of his and Hitler's activities and mindset.
Indeed the mindset of the various interviewees is compelling subject matter to ponder. Many seem to realize in retrospect what a terrible mistake they had made. They practically seem to be speaking of someone else as they openly discuss their participation in the horrors of the Nazi regime. The detestable Herman Goring is an exception suggesting no regrets about actions or beliefs.
The book is divided by subject matter, including genocide, perspectives on Hitler, the waging of War and Rudolph Hess. Those interrogated include Speer, Goering, Joachin von Ribbentorp and Alfred Jodl.
Overy does a masterful job of introducing the topics and the people, providing background and perspectives.
"Interrogations" is an important addition to the library of any student of World War II and of the Holocaust. It also stands well by itself as a fascinating study of human nature at its most destructive.

The author of Two Against Hitler, Dippel follows the lives of six relatively prominent German Jews from January 30, 1933, when Hitler became Chancellor, until late 1938. The six are Hans-Joachim Schoeps, the leader of an extreme right-wing group; Nobel prize-winning chemist Richard Wilstatter; banker Max Warburg; Leo Baeck, who was Berlin's chief rabbi; columnist Bella Fromm; and journalist and editor Robert Weltsch. The thread that ties the six together is their decision to remain in Germany during the Nazi era.
Customer Reviews:
good representation of a concerned Jewish community.......2000-05-17
This book gives a good representation of what happened in the Jewish community as Hitler grew in power. This shows the transformation from a community that had little regard for a Jewish identity to being bonded together by that mere fact alone. Dippel shows the unfortunate internal struggles that prevented any full Jewish unity (from assimilation, emigration, & fighting back to denial and prejdice). It allows you to see just what was felt during a confusing time in Germany & what was being done about it.
