The New Everyday Science Explained updates Curt Suplee's coffee table classic with 21st-century answers to many of the most common science questions, and quite a few uncommon ones. Why is the sky blue? How can we get rid of body fat? Why do we get sunburned? Is light a wave or a particle? Organized around general principles such as "Matter and Motion" and "The Chemistry of Life," this is an ideal family reference book, genuinely appropriate for both adults and children. And because it's from National Geographic, it's full of amazing photographs--a tightrope walker, red blood cells killed by malaria protozoans, a monstrous traffic jam--chosen to help explain scientific fundamentals. Within each larger chapter are 15 or more two-page spreads focused on a single idea. With just two to four paragraphs per topic, Suplee manages to clearly communicate the facts in a chunk that's easily digestible, even for science-phobes. For parents who want to be able to help with the homework, students who need a quick reference, and browsers who love National Geographic-caliber knowledge and photos, The New Everyday Science Explained is a delight. --Therese LittletonCustomer Reviews:

In Pursuit of Equity: Women, Men, and the Quest for Economic Citizenship in Twentieth-Century America
Alice Kessler-Harris Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195038355 |
Book Description
Few historians have contributed more to our understanding of the history of women, and women's effect on history, than Alice Kessler-Harris. Author of the classic Out to Work, she is one of the country's leading scholars of gender, the economy, and public policy. In this volume, Kessler-Harris pierces the skin of arguments and legislation to grasp the preconceptions that have shaped the experience of women: a "gendered imagination" that has defined what men and women alike think of as fair and desirable. In this brilliant account that traces social policy from the New Deal to the 1970s, she shows how a deeply embedded set of beliefs has distorted seemingly neutral social legislation to further limit the freedom and equality of women. Government rules generally sought to protect women from exploitation, even from employment itself; but at the same time, they attached the most important benefits to wage work. To be a real citizen, one must earn--and most policymakers (even female ones) assumed from the beginning that women were not, and should not be breadwinners. Kessler-Harris traces the impact of this gender bias in the New Deal programs of Social Security, unemployment insurance, and fair labor standards, in Federal income tax policy, and the new discussion of women's rights that emerged after World War II. "For generations," she writes, "American women lacked not merely the practice, but frequently the idea of individual economic freedom." Only in the 1960s and '70s did old assumptions begin to break down--yet the process is far from complete. Even today, with women closer to full economic citizenship than ever before, Kessler-Harris's insights offer a keen new understanding of the issues that dominate the headlines, from the marriage penalty in the tax code to the glass ceiling in corporate America.

Offensive Films: Toward an Anthropology of Cinema Vomitif (Contributions to the Study of Science Fiction and Fantasy)
Mikita Brottman Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 031330033X |
Book Description
The films discussed in this book have been labeled cinema vomitif because they induce a visceral response in their audience. They are an underground hybrid of slasher movies, exploitation films, and shock-u-mentaries. Taking a serious look at a taboo subject, Brottman argues that these scandalous films are of far more substance than has been previously assumed. Their consistent appeal to our repressed appetites, libidinal instincts, and fascination with flesh and death has much to tell us about the human condition. Films analyzed include the voyeuristic Freaks (1932), the traumatic psychodrama The Tingler (1959), the succes de scandale The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1976), the Italian shocker Cannibal Holocaust (1983), and two recent series of "live death" shock-u-mentaries, Death Scenes and Faces of Death (1989-1994). These movies, shunned from mainstream cinema because they are too offensive, obscene, marginal or bizarre, are considered here for the first time as an important part of the cinematic canon.Customer Reviews:

Roswell, High Times - An Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide
Keith Topping Manufacturer: Virgin Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Mass Market Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0753506300 |
Book Description
Roswell - a small town in New Mexico where nothing remarkable ever happened. Until 1947 that is, when a seemingly spectacular crash became the most famous alien encounter ever. Max, Isabel and Michael are not from 'around here'. Abandoned on Earth, they now live in Roswell as everyday teenagers. Forming an unlikely alliance with Liz, Maria and Alex, they have to outwit their families, friends and the local sheriff to keep their secret safe. In this handy, but fun episode-by-episdode guide to the first two seasons. Keith Topping explores their world, encompassing interview extracts, cast and crew biographies, series fandom on the Internet and, of course, the highlights of the show. Written by the author of the bestselling, acclaimed Buffy and Angel Fan Guides, this book fully does justice to the second-highest rated new show on any network in the 1999-2000 season in the US.Customer Reviews:
Good guide for first two seasons, wish it had third.......2005-07-12
Another Topping show guide.........2003-06-28
This guide covers all the essentials of Roswell including:
**cast bios
**list of episodes
**episode description including- synopsis, quotes, guest appearances, errors
**internet (Roswell is the one show where fans really made a difference, saving it from cancellation time and again, and sparking the creative tobasco mail in)
**novels (few know that Roswell was based on teen novels)
The only reason I gave this 4 stars was that it didn't cover the other seasons- with Roswell off the air (hope to see a movie!) , the author should update his guide to cover the entire series. (of course, after he writes the updated Buffy guide to cover all 7 seasons of BtVS--why are all the good shows leaving???)
Good but not great.......2002-12-23

Adobe InDesign 2.0 Classroom in a Book

If you're looking for thorough, at-home training in any Adobe application, the Classroom in a Book series is a good choice. Slow, deliberate pacing is a hallmark of these well-written books. Readers work through a wide variety of projects using professional-quality graphics and fonts (supplied on a companion CD-ROM). Rather than the personal "avoid-the-mistakes-I-made" quality of many how-tos, the series employs a more serious tone befitting books that are recognized as part of the official Adobe certification training.Readers begin with a Quick Tour tutorial that briefly covers all of the basics--working with tools and palettes, placing graphics and text. It's a great first dip in the water for those coming from QuarkXPress. From there, the lessons focus in more depth on specific areas: the work environment, setting up a new document with master pages, working with colors and gradients, importing and linking graphics, drawing with vectors, adjusting typography and editing text, creating tables, working with XML, exporting to PDF, color management, and much more. The lessons work best when followed sequentially; each includes many smaller tips that become helpful in later lessons. Sidebars feature handy information from the user's guide. (Although a trial version of the application does not come on the CD-ROM, it's available for download at Adobe.com.)
It's the Photoshop- and Illustrator-type features within InDesign that make it so much more fun to use than rival Quark. This book shows you how to do cool things with transparencies, blending modes, feathered edges, and drop shadows, a lot of which is new to version 2.0. There are also exercises that cover less wow-inducing (but just as time-saving) tools for creating indexes and making tables.
Frequent illustrations and screen shots help readers monitor their progress. Chapter summaries and review questions let beginners test their confidence in the material before moving on, and allow experienced users to skip material they already know.
The book has a few minor errors, a couple of which might just be platform related. Despite these, Adobe InDesign 2.0 Classroom in a Book is the best way to learn a powerful application that makes print design a breeze. --Angelynn Grant

Nero's Killing Machine: The True Story of Rome's Remarkable 14th Legion
Stephen Dando-Collins Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471675016 |
Book Description
The glorious saga of the most celebrated legion of the early Roman EmpireIn Nero's Killing Machine, the second in the author's definitive histories of the legions of ancient Rome, Stephen Dando-Collins brings the 14th Legion to vivid life. Drawing upon thirty-two years of research, he traces the legion's steps as they were wiped out while in the army of Julius Caesar, then reformed only to be savaged again. For decades the men of the 14th would struggle to regain their lost status, slowly climbing back to glory and eventually making a legendary stand against Britain's Queen Boudicca, vastly outnumbered but determined to go down fighting with honor. Uncovering new information about the legionnaires' lives and Roman military practices, Nero's Killing Machine is military history at its finest.
Praise for Caesar's Legion
"A unique and splendidly researched story, following the trials and triumphs of Julius Caesar's Legio X--arguably the most famous legion of its day--from its activation to the slogging battle of Munda and from Thapsus, Caesar's tactical masterpiece, to the grim siege of the Jewish fortress of Masada. More than a mere unit account, it incorporates the history of Rome and the Roman army at the height of their power and gory glory. Many military historians consider Caesar's legions the world's most efficient infantry before the arrival of gunpowder. This book shows why. Written in readable, popular style, Caesar's Legion is a must for military buffs and anyone interested in Roman history at a critical point in European civilization."
