Making ArcMap easy!.......2007-05-04
As a beginner, I found this book to be extremely useful. When introducing the reader to a new function, the book will have a series of numbered steps. The step numbers are also displayed on the color screen shots. Following this book and then executing the same functions in ArcMap is easy. I highly recommend this book as a primer.
Adequate book for beginners.......2001-04-12
This text does a pretty good job at skimming the vast amount of options and features of ArcMap, but seldom gets into real detail. Because of this, the potential of this expensive software gets largely unused. On a whole, I think it's a small stepping stone towards helping users understand what ArcMap can really do. For such a large book, there doesn't seem to be much in it of serious value. If you're a first time user of Arc software and GIS, this might help. But if you're an experienced GIS user, it comes up way short.

Book Description
Absurdities of English law are illustrated in 66 satirical essays that are thought-provoking and amusing. Some of the cases presented, no matter how ridiculous, are still studied today. There is the famous case of Albert Haddock, who wrote out a check to the Collector of Taxes on a cow. Then there is the case of Mr. and Mrs. Pratt, who, although happily married, got divorced in order to pay less income tax. This book will teach more about legal proceedings than most lawyers know, provided the reader can stop laughing long enough to learn.

There are 18 volumes of Misleading Cases in the Common Law.......2000-04-15
I have been able to find only one volume by Herbert--it was published by Methuen in 1935, and republished in 1969. This author is exceptionally good, funny, and stimulating. Somebody should make all of his writing available.
Should be compulsory reading for lawyers/law students.......1998-09-21
This book is riotously funny for anyone with even a modicum of legal training. I recommend it to all of my students and peers.
The law and legalese taken to the absurd is really funny!.......1998-09-09
Is a flodded road a street or a waterway?? - Rumpelheimer v. Haddock -
Is marriage lawful or should it be considered kindred to (russian?) roulett or other games of chance and therefore be prohibited? - Marrowfat v. Marrowfat -
Is there a right of free speech or it true that the only freedom one has left e.g. on a public street is to pass at an even pace from ome end of it to another breathing unobtrusively through the nose and attracting no attention? - Engheim et.al. v. The King -
If these are the legal questions of everyday life or of eternal significance you would like to read about, then this book is for you.
Classic lampoons of judicial decisons from Punch........1997-12-08
Reissued in paperback in 1997, these knowing spoofs of British courts appeared 1940-1960. Madcap Englishmen litigate divorce, compulsory schooling, using a cow as a check, etc., before judges and law lords who are as idiosyncratic as the parties to the cases. (See Herbert's biography.)
Book Description

Don't judge a book by its cover!.......2000-08-16
Well, when the book first arrived, all I could think of were the types of books that were 'field guides to. . .' I actually considered sending it back as I thought it would be of little value--I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE MISTAKEN! While the book gives the appearance that it is pure textbook in style and format it was at least for me VERY informational, AND put together in a very readable format. There is an absolute wealth of technical information on berries and fruits but the book is also written so that even the most berry-less person (myself) can easily use the information. The book contains a great section on the care of berries and fruits with several chapters on pruning. It also lists the berries and fruits individually with a chapter devoted to each. The chapters all contain the same type of topics: overview, selection, care, disease, suggested cultivars for your zone, and anything unique about the cultivar. It is also very well photographed AND the illustrations are very helpful. I found it to be a valuable addition to my growing gardening library with a great deal of very practical advice!

Book Description
The Proterozoic Biosphere is the first major study of the paleobiology of the Proterozoic Earth. It is a multidisciplinary work dealing with the evolution of the Earth, the environment, and life during the forty percent of Earth's history that extends from the middle of the Precambrian Eon (2500 Ma) to the beginning of the Paleozoic Era (550 Ma.). The Proterozoic Biosphere includes a vast amount of new data on Proterozoic organisms and their modern analogs. Prepared by the Precambrian Paleobiology Research Group, a multidisciplinary consortium of forty-one scientists from eight countries, this monograph will serve as a benchmark in the development of the science of the biochemistry and the organic chemistry of Proterozoic sediments. The three main goals of this study are: (1) to amass, evaluate, and synthesize the large body of paleobiologic data available from previous studies, eliminating mistakes so that future investigations will not be encumbered by them; (2) to generate new data and new analyses based on the reexamination of previous studies and on new investigations within an interdisciplinary framework; (3) to build toward the future by placing special emphasis on new or relatively neglected aspects of paleobiologic study and by highlighting major unsolved problems in the field.

Comprehensive, boring, but needed reading for all scientists.......2005-01-08
Many phenomena that humans experience in everyday life are due to the polarization of atoms and aggregates of atoms. Some examples include dust sticking to surfaces, being able to look thru a window but not thru a wall, rainbows, static electricity, etc... These consequences of polarization are usually explained in separate texts on optics, surface science, electromagnetism, etc... This book explains all of these effects in one dedicated, mathematical and visual treatment of polarization. The science of polarization is extensively explained, both time dependent and independent. Ways to measure polarization, and methods of modeling it are also covered. The book also highlights areas in which knowledge is scarce and more research could be done. The text is tight, with short summaries and relevant equations in each section. The mathematics are quite advanced, requiring knowledge of linear algebra, PDE, and transforms to fully grasp it.
Overall, this book is a good reference, but a bare-bones textbook which would probably require a lot of supplemental material.
Book Description
Having grown up as the daughter of Madame Lucille, “Fortune Teller to the Stars,” traveling from town to town, wondering which of the many men her mother brought home would become her next stepfather, Maz Lombard just wants a nice, quiet life. But Maz’s soon-to-be-ex-husband, Lenny, recently left for Santa Fe after his very public affair with a fetching young day-care teacher imploded, and her daughter Hope is convinced she’s inherited the family “seeing” gene and is scaring her classmates with séances and dark prophecies.
When Lenny shows up wanting another chance, and Madame Lucille pulls into town with her newest husband, any hope Maz has for a simple, ordinary life goes out the window. But seeing her family in all its complicated, infuriating, and mystifying splendor might be just the thing to help Maz define herself on her own terms and live the life she’s always wanted. And what’s so crazy about that?
Includes a new essay by the author and a preview chapter of her terrific new novel, A Piece of Normal

“Funny, funny, funny, from page one. You can’t help but root for the lovable Maz Lombard, who’s surrounded by an eccentric mother, headstrong daughter, deadbeat husband, and way too much whole wheat flour. Sandi Kahn Shelton’s writing sparkles with humor and insight.” —Lolly Winston, author of Good Grief
“I loved What Comes After Crazy. Smart, warm, and hilarious!” —Jennifer Crusie, author of Bet Me and Faking It
“A book about slaying dragons (the ultimate toxic mother and lame estranged husband), What Comes After Crazy shows that a woman can be the hero of her own life. A comedy with all the avenging and day-saving you can handle, but without any messy bloodshed.” —Valerie Frankel, author of The Girlfriend and The Accidental Virgin
“[A] promising debut novel . . . [Shelton] has a good touch with mother/daughter conflicts and a strong sense of the ambiguities of friendships. Her Maz is a sympathetic character not in spite of but because of her self-acknowledged flaws. . . . Appealing and often very funny.” —Kirkus Reviews

A pleasant surprise..........2007-07-05
I am not a huge fan of chick lit, but "What Comes After Crazy" is a delightful read. It was recommended to me by someone who knows I love Anne Tyler. While this isn't in that same caliber (it's much less literary) I can see why a comparison might be made. Both authors provide domestic novels full of colorful, ramshackle lives. Once I knew it was about a fortune teller's daughter with an estranged husband who is a religious con man, I knew it was up my alley.
While I didn't love everything about it (I could have done without the overly ideal Dr. Dan), it is definitely a highlight of my reading so far this year. I look forward to the author's other books.
Fast, enjoyable read about a quirky family.......2006-09-01
This is the story of Maz, who has 2 children in Connecticut, a husband in Santa Fe, and a fortune-telling mother who just married her sixth husband.
I thought a couple of the reviews above were off. I didn't think the sex scenes were coarse, and I didn't think Maz was curmudgeonly. Maz is a likable woman whose life is a little out of control, but it's an exciting ride to read about.
When Maz's unreliable husband and crazy mother descend on her house in Connecticut, that's when the fun begins.
I don't want to give away too much about the plot, but if you like domestic fiction written by women, it's almost a sure bet that you'll enjoy this. It reminded me a bit of Anne Tyler, but slightly earthier and more dramatic.
Loved this book!.......2006-07-22
I absolutely loved "What Comes After Crazy". Sandi Kahn Shelton has created characters who you really care about, particularly Maz and her daughters. I even cared about her crazy mother, Lucille. These are all characters who you feel like you know, not just on the page, but in real life, because they are tangible in the way that characters in a book rarely are. I strongly recommend this book!
Everybody has a complicated life..........2006-05-25
I loved this book because of the way the main character, Maz, deals with her own complicated life with humor and love. She just keeps plugging along, even though she was raised by a less-than-adequate mom and has to learn how to cope as an adult. I even loved Madame Lucille, crazy and wacky as she is. All the characters came alive. I don't think this book is a farce at all! It has a lot to say about our own crazy lives and the people who drive us a little bit nuts and how we learn to love them when we can, but eventually to rely on ourselves. I thought it was a fun book and a good read.
Despite all the good reviews..........2006-05-06
...I just didn't like this book. I found it to be dull...there is so much farce that it becomes overloading. I wanted desperately to love it, but just couldn't seem to get past the ridiculous drama. I didn't find it to be a fun read; I found it be a stressful one.
There are some wonderful, fun books in this genre. This is just one that didn't resonate with me.
Book Description
The battles fought on the Eastern Front were decisive to the course of the First World War. As well as reconstructing these events, Norman Stone explores the factors that influenced their outcome and draws some unexpected conclusions. Dispelling the popular myth of an economically crippled Russia, he argues that the country was, in fact, going through a period of unprecedented economic growth. Tsarist Russia's weakness lay in its outdated administration, which resulted in war shortages and an inefficient army. In a fascinating reinterpretation of the connection between the war and the revolution that followed, he shows that although military events had almost ceased by the end of 1916, Russia was still in turmoil, undergoing a period of modernization that opened the way to revolution.
Customer Reviews:
Detailed, but not quite the book that I thought it would be.......2007-09-25
I bought this book believing it to be a concise, scholarly account of the combat on the Eastern Front during the Great War. If this is the type of book you are looking for, I suggest that you carefully read this and other reviews. The title of this book is somewhat misleading as this is really a book about the Russian war time economy, it's relationship to the fighting on the Eastern Front, and how military, political, and economic events lead to the collapse of the Russian army and the Revolution in 1917. Some of the other reviews explain this in more detail (I'm not going to repeat it), but check them out before you buy. If this is in fact what you are looking for, I would highly recommend this book. This is NOT a balanced account of the military campaigns of 1914-1917 in spite of the title. If you are looking for a general military history, keep searching. Stone has some surprising, but well documented, conclusions. His most important is, I believe, the fact that in economic terms, Russia was not the backward economy that is commonly believed. He also claims that, contrary to many Western observers at the time, there was no value to the notion that the West (i.e. Britain and France) could have more effectively utilized supplies wasted in the quagmire in France by shipping them to Russia. Russia's military problems in the Great War had less to do with purely economic issues like delivery of shells and rifles, but more with bureaucratic and political rivalries in the government and military that created inertia and needless internal competition. There is a great deal of information about the military campaings from the German/Austrian side, but this is definitely not the focus of the book. One thing really annoyed me about Stone's writing style. He tries to insult virtually every major participant on all sides. You'ld think after reading Stone's account that everyone (Germans included) were almost totally incompetent (maybe they were?). One final point, this is definitely a scholarly work, it is dense and filled with information. I can only recommend this to the most serious student of the era.
Disjointed To The Point of Utter Confusion.......2007-09-23
Indeed, as another reviewer points out, there are precious few books on the market today which deal with the largely unknown Eastern and Romanian Fronts of World War One.
This one is factual. But it is also monumentally confusing as it jumps back and forth within each chapter to battles past and not yet fought, and not always explaining the changes in army command for either side.
The War Maps are, generally speaking, well laid out and, for the most part, provide the names of army commanders. But it would have been nice, for example, to know the names of Corps commanders on the Lodz, 1914 and Carpathian Battle [early 1915] maps.
Also, the one depicting the "Central Powers' triple offensive of 1915 and the Russian retreat" leaves you guessing as to who was in charge of some their armies at that time, and absolutely nothing regarding those in charge of the retreating Russian Armies. Indeed, even what armies were involved.
For the Brusilov Campaign map we see that the First Austro-Hungarian Army was under the command of "Puhallo" - but there is nothing in the text to tell you that this is Major-General Paul Puhallo von Brlog.
First names and ranks of the senior general involved would also have been welcomed, as would a little more detail on the Romanian, Bulgarian, and Turkish commanders who led their armies/corps/divisions in the battle surrounding Romania [which was, after all, a major component of the Eastern Front].
brilliant and enjoyable........2007-04-02
This book is not recommended for readers seeking a straightforward account of the battles of the eastern front. While stone does depict these events the narrative is typically concerned with several different minutae of both the russian army and its relation to society at large. Stone looks at various aspects of the campaign and makes persuasive arguments to debunk various notions and myths which surround general accounts. The analysis is brilliant and gives the reader indepth evocative information about the chosen facets he wishes to illumnate. And that is the whole point. If one is well read in this area it serves as a cornerstone in their already voluminous library on the era. For a non academic like myself however it left me wanting more, primarily because it was so good.
Stylistically Poor, Muddled Narrative.......2006-05-22
Sadly there is some very good information in this book but trying to find it and consolidating it is almost impossible. The problem is that there is a lot of 'who and what' but very little 'how and why'.
For example, Stone does a great job of telling you who was involved in the Battle of the Masurian Lakes in 1915, and he'll make a statement that 100,000 men were lost. But since he's only told us the number of the armies or corps or divisions (and never the size in manpower), it's hard to tell whether the battle was even to start with or what. He will say that the terrain was poor but does little to describe it other that, muddy roads or icy bridges.
A battle description is they went to this city the enemy met them they retreated to this line to protect their flank. Doesn't tell you much. He needs to read a book by Shelby Foote or John Keegan to get an idea of how to deliver the details of an engagement. (Imagine the description of a wedding: the bride wore a dress, the groom a tux, they walked up to the minister who married them.)
Finally, why don't the maps have the towns mentioned in the narrative, marked on them. Half the time, the maps for one battle are in the middle of the description of another battle.
Very poorly edited and disappointing.
Oxbridge Common Room History.......2006-02-07
Having returned to this book after twenty-five years, I find it ought to lose some of its lustre.
It offers an analysis of Russian strategy on the Eastern Front, and of the resources available to wage this war, both material and human. However, as a military history it is hampered by its lack of maps and the inability of the author to describe the battles in any coherent way. I get the impression he was more interested in making snide remarks about personalities than in telling the reader what happened on the battlefield, a very Oxbridge Common Room approach to history, if one may indulge in a bit of it oneself.
It earns its third star by the fact of dealing with a subject poorly covered in English.
Within its limitations, it's a good book, but these limitations are significant.

somewhat thin soup.......2005-08-22
Michael Kihntopf's Handcuffed To A Corpse is a thin, 113-page volume examining Imperial Germany's direct intervention in a few specific military campaigns and battles on behalf of her lame and basically useless ally, Austria-Hungary. Although the book's subtitle suggests that this covers operations in the Balkans and Galicia "1914-1917," in point of fact it ends with the campaign Mackensen ran effectively removing Romania from the war in late 1916.
There isn't a whole lot of anything new here. The occasionally irritating misspellings or inaccuracies give one the impression that this could have been some college history paper. The military detail is of interest, but seems incomplete, and the book itself picks only a few of the campaigns, leaving out other important developments (especially considering Germany's decisive campaigns in the east in 1917 are not even referred to). I read the book as essentially a lengthy opinion piece, rather than a work of significant research (new or otherwise).
Kihntopf starts with a good chapter on the goals, ambitions and capabilities of the main combatants in the theater, going into some detail regarding training and equipping of the various forces, and giving his opinion on just how realistic some of these policies were. He then gets to the meat of the book, which is a narrative account of the progress, and often direct German involvement in, several battles (Lemberg) or campaigns (Serbia 1914-1915, Romania 1916). Kihntopf's main theme is that Austria-Hungary's army and leadership was so inept and incompetent that frankly they were more of a liability to the German war effort than a help, and he shows how the Austrians were repeatedly bested by two otherwise mediocre armies, Russia's and Serbia's, until German leadership and well-trained and motivated troops were sent to fix things. Germany's poor choice of allies is made worse by adding the shortsighted and greedy Bulgarians, disinterested in helping the war effort once their own specific war aims (Serbia's Macedonia and Romania's Dobruja regions) were achieved, and Ottoman Turkey, who once brought on board had to be supplied and armed (causing the Germans to have to take care of the Serbs once and for all, in order to use their slice of the Berlin/Constantinople railway).
Kihntopf's conclusion, an appraisal of the general strategic situation in the east as of 1/1/1917, is that Serbia and Romania objectively had ceased to exist territorially and had thus failed in their strategic objectives; that Russia was seriously on the ropes due to massive losses in manpower and irreplaceable arms; but that the seemingly ascendant Central Powers Austria and Bulgaria were also in general trouble, strained to the limit. Only Germany could be said to have achieved all of its strategic goals: removing the danger to the German eastern regions from the Russians, dominating the Balkans entirely, and keeping the rail line open to Turkey.
The book is, in its limited way, okay. It does include some maps, but these are poorly done, and the reader would benefit from a much better and more detailed set. Likewise, the photos included could have been from anywhere, and there are far superior examples available in many other books. At $25 it is overpriced for what you get; there are many other books for less which cover the war in the east far more exhaustively and reliably.
A Book to Avoid!!.......2005-05-14
The author makes a cottage industry of WW I East Front books it appears. None of any quality or scholarship. This is a book - like his others - to avoid.
this is a better book than the first reviewer thought.......2004-02-21
The long awaited follow up to the author's first book, this volume illuminates the war in the Balkans, a much ignored but very important part of the war. I hope he keeps the outstanding work coming.
Save your money.......2002-09-30
Michael Kihntopf's "Handcuffed to a Corpse" purports to be a history of Germany's intervention on behalf of the Austro-Hungarian empire during the First World War. The author asserts that "few historians have recorded the events of the World War I's [sic] Balkan and Galician Fronts." Perhaps, although Norman Stone's book on the Eastern Front is still available, and remains a solid, informative work. This, on the other hand, is not.
Kihntopf's account is, above all, superficial: the book has a mere 113 pages of text -- with fairly large type -- and there is really nothing new here. Indeed, the author has failed to consult any non-English language sources, an unforgivable failing for someone who is attempting to give a history of the German and Austro-Hungarian side of the war. Not that the author's command of English is too steady: the frequent grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors lead me to conclude that no one ever bothered to edit this book. More importantly, the author makes frequent, careless factual errors: the military governor of Bosnia was Oskar Potiorek, not "Potinorek;" the Belgian monarch was King Albert, not "Prince Albert." Finally, the book ends in 1917 -- not with the Russian Revolution (which would have made some sense), but on New Year's Day -- as if that date had any military or political significance. Perhaps the author could have justified this incomprehensible choice, but he seems to have omitted any conclusion from his final chapter.
On the plus side, there are complete organizational tables for the German and Russian armies as they stood at the outbreak of the war, although these are readily available in other books (as is the Austro-Hungarian -- it is baffling why this was omitted here). The maps are marginally useful, and the photographs are interesting. In sum, the information here is available in other books, at better prices, and with a better chance of reliability. I recommend the aforementioned book by Norman Stone or Holger Herwig's book on the German and Austro-Hungarian war efforts. Also, Spencer Tucker's short volume on the war does a better job of covering the Eastern Front than most other general histories, and is highly recommended.

In October 1917, an invasion force of some 25,000 German soldiers, accompanied by a flotilla of 10 dreadnoughts, 350 other vessels, a half-dozen zeppelins, and 80 aircraft, attacked the Baltic islands of Dago, Osel, and Moon at the head of the Gulf of Riga. It proved to be the most successful amphibious operation of World War I. The three islands fell, the Gulf was opened to German warships and was now a threat to Russian naval bases in the Gulf of Finland, and 20,000 Russians were captured. The invasion proved to be the last major operation in the East. Although the invasion had achieved its objectives and placed the Germans in an excellent position for the resumption of warfare in the spring, within three weeks of the operation, the Bolsheviks took power in Russia (November 7, 1917) and Albion faded into obscurity as the war in the East came to a slow end.

Book Description
Unless action is taken, the developing world will face recurrent problems of food security and conflict. This volume provides a summary and perspective of the field of land resources and suggests improvements needed to conserve resources for future generations. Coverage provides an authoritative review of the resources of soils, water, climate, forests and pastures on which agriculture depends. It assesses the interactions between land resources and wider aspects of development, including population and poverty. It provides a strong critique of current methods of assessing land degradation and placing an economic value on land. It should be read by all involved in rural development, including scientists, economists, geographers, sociologists, planners, and students of development studies.
