5 out of 5 stars one of my best references.......2003-04-17

this has honestly got to be one of the best vb references i have ever read. it has almost everything in vb that you could wish to do as well as some examples so that you are not typing and trying. i consider this my vb bible i read it all the time when i need help.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2002-06-01

The book makes a very good reference. That's about it. Don't rely on it as a tutorial because its not. There are not many sample problems to work on and most of them are very simple (not real world examples). One needs to have the full version of VB in order to build the ActiveX controls. The book serves as a good introduction, so you have to get a more advanced book (Visual Basic 6 from Scratch) to get some hands on, create useful applications, and really learn. The book had a few coding errors.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2001-10-27

This is a great beginners book. It's written in an easy to understand manner. It doesn't use the "I've been doing this type of thing for eons so I assume you have even though your a beginner" techno-geek speek. If your a beginner, get this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginners Book.......2000-04-07

This book is very good if you are just starting out. However, you'll quickly outgrow it and be looking for an intermediate book. It covers all the standard tools well and touches on ActiveX and database programming.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect "beginner book" !.......1999-08-04

I picked up the package and opened VB6 In Plain English at 6:00. It was 2:00 A.M. when I had to put it down. The title says it all - "...In Plain English..." I learned stuff I'd been fretting over for days !

Plan to keep it around for a long time.

Book Description

In Global Instability, internationally renowned contributors examine the key problems besetting the world economy in the era of globalization and outline possible solutions. They reject the current orthodoxy in mainstream economics, challenging the fatalistic belief that the new globalized economy resists any change of course.

        Book Description

This study gives valuable insights into the complex interaction between social security law and private tort law. It is based on reports from eleven European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and Sweden. Leading experts from these jurisdictions provide a concentrated overview of the social security systems in their countries and identify the important differences between social security and tort law compensation in the field of personal injuries. The interrelation between both branches of law is reviewed with respect, e.g., to accidents in the occupational sphere, contributory negligence, recourse actions and bulk agreements between public and private insurance schemes. An extensive comparative report highlights the European perspective and the general interplay between social security law and tort law. The legal perspective is supplemented by an economical analysis of both systems.

                Book Description

Historically, water has been treated as an inexhaustible resource. However, with the growth of population and development of industry and agriculture, freshwater demand has increased drastically, and its shortage felt in roughly 60% of the Earth. As early as 1931, renowned Russian scholar A.P. Karpansky wrote: "Water is not only a mineral resource, not only a means for developing agriculture. Water is a real culture bearer, it is a living blood, that creates life where there was none". Groundwater and the Environment: Remediation Applications and the Global Community covers one of the most important ecological problems - the impact on the environment of intensive groundwater pumping out. Drawing on more than a quarter century of study, Zektser analyses and makes conclusions about groundwater exploitation throughout the world. He focuses on the close connection of groundwater to the environment - its affect on surface water streams, reservoirs, seas, landscapes, and vegetation. The author demonstrates the importance of groundwater to the potable water supply, and its interaction with the environment. He stresses the significance of groundwater as a mineral resource. He provides techniques for assessing and mapping natural groundwater resources and develops these principles for studying water and hydrochemicals in coastal zones. In the last twenty years, the global awareness of groundwater as one of the most important natural resources has grown. Any changes in the groundwater causes changes in the environment. Groundwater and the Environment: Remediation Applications and the Global Community increases your ability to predict the possible changes to the environment and to follow the principle: "When using - protect, when protecting - use!"

                  Book Description

The two-body system has played a major role in nuclear physics and still holds the stage. Over the past fifty years a steady flow of experimental and theoretical papers on deuteron photodisintegration and its inverse reaction demonstrates the continuing interest in this fundamental process. This book contains an almost exhaustive review of the theoretical approaches employed to evaluate two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at low and intermediate energies. Moreover, a critical survey of all the experiments concerning this process is given and the most accurate data are selected in order to compare the experimental results with the theoretical ones. Many information can be taken from this review, in particular that the current theory is able to describe the experimental data pretty well in the energy region below the pion production threshold, while more precise experimental data and improved theoretical calculations are needed in and above the delta-resonance region. Moreover, the role of meson exchange currents and isobar degrees of freedom is clearly seen in this process, the importance of different approximations in the calculations is clarified and the necessity of studying polarization observables is stressed.

4 out of 5 stars Very different from the movie, not in a bad way.......2007-05-19

I decided to read this book after watching the movie. There are couple of scenes that are in both, but I found the movie much funnier. The banter is missing between the siblings in the book, BUT this doesn't make the book a bad read. It's actually an enjoyable quick read. A passage from this book makes me want to stir some white wine into boxed mac and cheese. Apparently it's delicious.

5 out of 5 stars MUST LOVE DOGS.......2007-01-25

FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. IT WAS AWESOME. I WENT AND BOUGHT EVERY BOOK SHE WROTE AFTER READING THIS ONE BOOK. CLAIRE COOK IS THE BEST.

                  3 out of 5 stars A lonely kindergaten teacher.......2007-01-11

To some degree, a story of a woman contemplating her navel, her unusual family and her rather empty life. It was turned into a hilarious movie, while an obvious chick flick was considerably better than the novel, largely due to the extraordinarily pleasing leading characters and an improved story line.

3 out of 5 stars Patti Linnell got it covered; no need to reinvent the wheel........2006-09-09

Patti Linnell did such a nice job reviewing this book that I don't have much too add. This is not a boring look, the writing is fun and entertaining and occasionally even hilarious. The ending is weird and sort of unsatisfying, but I'm one who likes the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In spite of the chuckles and the strong characters (some, like Dottie, were over the top), it was a pleasant read, not memorable, so I'm going to have to go with 3.

                  I rate books as follows:
***** Fun and meaningful book, or changed/challenged me in a positive way.
****Really fun or meaningful; well worth the time.
***Pleasantly skimmed the surface; not memorable.
                  **Plodded through.
                  *Abandoned; very flawed.

3 out of 5 stars Claire Cook does have talent..........2006-07-08

I really don't like reading books that has a cover that features women's feet. Usually women's feet = dumb book. Must Love Dogs featured all the regular chick lit norms:

                  1) The conflict in the story must not be life threatening - no AIDS, cancer, etc. Or too serious, like terrorism or stock market crashes.
                  2) Another character has to be tall and thin and blonde to help point out how not tall, thin and blonde she is, BUT it must come out in the end that she was secretly jealous the whole time. Towards the end there has to be a speech of "I've always admired you and I thought you hated me!!"
                  3) The Heroine must have one really hip old person in her life, relative or not.
                  4) The Heroine cannot be married, she must be in love with: a) a guy who treats her like crap b) a guy who is either above or below her extremely on the social totem pole or c) a gay guy. Maybe all three?
                  5) Most of all, the heroine must never have any sort of strong political, religious or social views or think about any subject that might cause her to think more on any of these three subjects.

They thing that made me not hate this book (except for the weird sappy ending where they all come together like some odd Christmas special on that weird bus. The ending was like a strange dream sequence. I kept waiting for Neil Diamond or Tom Jones to appear to lead them all in a brilliant rendition of Auld Lang Syne.) was that Claire Cook does write very well and is very witty and warm. Oh Claire Cook! Write another book! Use your powers for good not evil!

                                  Book Description

The Crusaders that landed in the Middle East in the late-11th century brought with them their own traditions of military architecture, but it was not long before their defensive construction began to reflect a broad array of local influences. Most early Crusader structures were relatively small, and tended to increase the existing natural and defensive features of a site. The basic forms comprised freestanding towers, castra, and hilltop and spur-castles, but urban centres, religious sites and rural dwellings were also fortified. From the 1160s, bigger, stronger and more expensive castles began to appear, in response to developments in Islamic siege weaponry. This title examines the early fortifications erected by the Crusaders in modern-day Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and south-eastern Turkey.

3 out of 5 stars Fine castle book, but with flaws.......2006-04-26

David Nicolle has written many excellent books on medieval history for osprey publishing. This book however gives the impression that it is too quickly published. If the author and publisher had spend a little more time on it, removing the flaws, it could have received 5 stars.

The book covers interesting examples of crusading castles and fortifications in the middle east of 1097-1192, including the unknown (for me) cave-fortress of Ain al Habis (La cave de Sueth). Do not expect the well-known big crusader castles in this book (except saone), these are covered in his next book. The information makes the book well worth for anyone interested in castles and crusader history.

However, the flaws are many. The most annoying are the maps and drawings of Cave de Sueth. Why has the publisher placed an illegible picture (72 dpi or even lower) here? This is even more strange as the picture originates from another (scientific) manuscript of the author. He must have access to a good quality image (Due to this book, I now have a copy of this manuscript, which contains excellent pictures).

Other flaws of the book are:
                                  - Some of the color illustrations do show very little interesting parts of the castles (for instance The Hospitallers take over the castle of Turris Rubea in the 1190's).
                                  - Plans of castles do not appear at the place where they are described in the text. Other plans shown are not mentioned at all in the text, as well as descriptions of castle plans in the text have no image of the plan.
                                  - Some photographs show hardly any information.
                                  - Two maps showing the castles of the region are very detailed and in full color, whereas two maps other regions are crude and black and white.

                                  In conclusion:
If you want a general book on crusader castles, buy another book which is better presented. If you are a castle-enthousiast or interested in this period of history, this book is still worth your money.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2004-11-19

This book, another in the collection on Castles and architecture, focuses on the Castles in the area known as the Levant, or the Holy Land, built during the period of 1097-1192. The focus is on the castles that were in use or used by the Crusaders during the time of the Crusades.

This series of books, the Fortress books by Osprey, are some of the best tools that can be utilized by anyone who is doing research on the areas or time periods noted in the titles, and this book is no exception.

The book contains not only valuable information on the types and structures of Castles in the Holy Land, but the maps, timeline, drawings and photos, and basic history incorporated into these books make them a pleasure to read and excellent sources of information for anyone doing research or getting into the study of the Crusades.

First, let's look at the discussion of the castles. The book presents the layout of the land, the need for defenses, the types and styles of castles, from the freestanding towers to the hilltop fortifications to the man-made and enhanced cave-fortresses. While we are more familiar with the stone edifices, there were also wooden fortresses, and there is discussion on how and why for the building materials chosen. There is also discussion on the choices of structures and layouts.

The outline of the crusades is presented so that the reader becomes familiar with the place names, the route of the original crusades and the reason for placement of these castles. The book very effectively lays out the battle strategies, key placement of fortifications, and how they were, or were not, effective against the invasion and occupation of opposing forces.

What makes this book outstanding are the references to events, incidents and places all through the crusade story. Excellent reference maps make the progress of the crusaders and locations of key fortifications easy to visualize and follow. What had been lacking in many books on the crusades, visual aids to follow as well as a time line progression, is more than made up for in this book. There is even a chart for the names of the castles referenced in Medieval French or Latin, Arabic and Turkish or Hebrew. This is a fantastic reference for reading other histories of the crusades from various language sources.

There are also wonderful illustrations of what the castles looked like at the time they were built, giving some great layouts to better explain how a castle was put together and it's purposes, what the original plan was for protection and fortification, and how some of these castles appear today. Black and white photographs show how they have withstood the test of time and attack.

There are some lovely illustrations of constructions and use of these castles as well as illustrations involving battles at various castles. The historical detail of period clothing, machines, armor and weapons give the reader a very realistic visual of what life was like at that time.

There is a timeline at the beginning of the book that places events, battles and even natural disasters into perspective as you follow the history of the crusades. This is a key piece of information that makes this book very easy to follow.

The material is well researched, well thought out as far as how to include the most amount of information in the space provided. While the focus is not the Crusades itself but rather the military aspect of the crusades in relation to battles and defenses, it can not help but include key events, military groups, religious centers and the general story of the Crusades.

This book can augment any other reference you will be looking at, whether a school project or just curious reading. For the maps and time line alone it is a valuable resource. Include the look at the military strategies, the culture and the life style of the time, and it is probably one of the best resources for the price point as well as ease of reading and understanding. No college degree required here.

The book has a good outline in the table of contents, a bibliography (Further Reading), a glossary of terms that you will not encounter elsewhere, and an index that makes for easy reference.

A great reference tool, one that will surly find it's way into school libraries as well as home libraries for it's value as a well done, well researched and easy to understand book. medievalcrusadesbabe

With a title inspired as much by Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series as Einstein, The Theory of Everything delivers almost as much as it promises. Transcribed from Stephen Hawking's Cambridge Lectures, the slim volume may not present a single theory unifying gravity with the other fundamental forces, but it does carefully explain the state of late 20th-century physics with the great scientist's characteristic humility and charm. Explicitly shunning math, Hawking explains the fruits of 100 years of heavy thinking with metaphors that are simple but never condescending--he compares the settling of the newborn universe into symmetry to the formation of ice crystals in a glass of water, for example. While he explores his own work (especially when speaking about black holes), he also discusses the important milestones achieved by others like Richard Feynman. Though occasionally an impenetrably obscure phrase does slip by, the reader will find the bulk of the text enlightening and engaging. The material, from the nature of time to the possibility that the universe has no beginning or end, is rich and deep and inevitably ignites metaphysical thinking. After all, Hawking is famous for his "we would know the mind of God" remark, which ends the final lecture herein. --Rob Lightner

                                                      Book Description

Based on a series of lectures given at Cambridge University, Professor Hawking's work introduced "the history of ideas about the universe" as well as today's most important scientific theories about time, space, and the cosmos in a clear, easy-to-understand way.

Even if this product is unofficial, and unsanctioned by Stephen Hawking himself, I have to say I enjoyed it.
I liked how its topics were so clearly delineated into thematically cohesive lectures, I liked that the author read them himself using a computer, and I loved the clear and organized way that Hawking laid out topics as complex and unfathomable as black holes and time and the beginning of the universe.
Don't buy this, I suppose, since it's really not sanctioned by Hawking himself, but do buy his other work that basically repeats this same material.
Do buy this, though, if you're a Hawking completist, already have all his other books, and are looking for just a little bit more.
                                                      I loved it.

When Phoenix did a crummy job on their audio book production of A Brief History of Time, I thought "that seems kind of disrespectful, doing a hack job like that just so they can make money off of a famous book."

It has come to our attention that the book "The Theory of Everything: The Origin and Fate of the Universe" has been published. Professor Hawking would like to make it clear that he has not endorsed this book. The text was written by him many years ago, however the material has already been published in books such as 'A Brief History of Time'. A complaint was made to the Federal Trade Commission in the US in the hope that they would prevent the publication. We would urge you not to purchase this book in the belief that Professor Hawking was involved in its creation.

In physicist Stephan Hawking's brilliant opus, A Brief History Of Time, he presented us with a bold new look at our universe, how it began, and how our old views of physics and tired theories about the creation of the universe were no longer relevant. In other words, Hawking gave us a new look at our world, our universe, and ourselves.

Now, available for the first time in a deluxe full-color edition with never-before-seen photos and illustrations, Hawking presents an even more comprehensive look at our universe, its creation, and how we see ourselves within it. Imagine sitting in a comfortable room listening to Hawking discuss his latest theories and place them in historical context with science's other great achievements-it would be like hearing Christopher Columbus deliver the news about the new world.

True, the book does not represent Hawking's latest views, but for those wishing to wade into the shallow end of Hawking's writing this is not bad.

Coming in at a short 112 pages, this heavily illustrated book gives one a opportunity to at least familiarize themselves with issues that Hawking gives much more detailed treatment to in his other works: A brief history of time, Black holes and Baby Universes and On the Shoulders of Giants.

One good for instance is his chapter on the arrow of time. In it Hawking observes that there is not only one but several arrows of time. Though he only talks about cosmic expansion, gravitation and the perceptual arrows of time (and not Kaon decay or the quantum arrow of time which may be the master arrow), one still gets the idea that there are physical reasons for why time assumes a directionality.

Another example is his final chapter on the quest for a theory of everything. Though now -- particularly with waning enthusiasm for string theory -- there is reasoned speculation that maybe there may never be a theory of everything, his chapter stills reflects how many view still view the search.

And finally, his chapter on black hole radiation harkens back to the research that originally put him on the map, his 1974 finding that black holes do indeed radiate and even given enough time will decay.

All together, Hawking's book shows the lucid explanatory power of one who both knows and knows how to explain.

So yes, by all means, read this book, but don't stop here and read the rest of his books too.

The general consensus is that the three greatest physicists of all time are Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Unfortunately, Hawking is often known more for his lack of physical prowess than for his prowess in physics. He possesses a brilliant mind, and is also very effective at the writing of popular science. Hawking has an uncanny ability to make the incredibly complex ideas of astrophysics understandable to people who have difficulty balancing an algebraic equation.
Hawking is once again at the top of his game with this book. It is a collection of the seven popular lectures that he presented to the public. Their titles are:

                                                      *) Ideas about the universe
                                                      *) The expanding universe
                                                      *) Black holes
*) Black holes ain't so black
*) The origin and fate of the universe
                                                      *) The direction of time
                                                      *) The theory of everything

Each is fairly short; the ideas are explained without the reference to equations. There are many illustrations that give a visual explanation of concepts such as the curvature of space, the expansion and contraction of the universe and the direction of time.
If you have an interest in the fate of the universe but always felt that advanced astrophysics was beyond you, then this is the book for you. It doesn't explain everything, but it does show you the best current theories of how the universe started, how it is constructed and how it appears that it will end.

On his website, http://www.hawking.org.uk/info/iindex.html, Hawking says that he wrote this years ago, it does not reflect his latest views (contrary to the cover blurb), and that he did not endorse its publication. I just wanted to pass this information along. There's a lot more reviews mentioning this for an earlier edition of this book, without "illustrated" in the title, so if you want to buy the book look at those first. Setting aside the misinformation in the advertising (for which I'm giving it one star), and the change in Hawking's views, it's a reasonable book.

This book is easy to comprehend and makes you think about "what if's", and "could this really be". Sort of like X-files meets reality. A must have for any one who believs in an outer existence.

From the Publisher The Theory Of Everything is a unique opportunity to explore the cosmos with the greatest mind since Einstein. Based on a series of lectures given at Cambridge University, Professor Hawking introduces "the history of ideas about the universe" as well as today's most important scientific theories about time, space, and the cosmos in a clear, easy-to-understand way. Professor Hawking transformed our view of the universe in his landmark bestselling book A Brief History of Time and most recently in the bestselling Universe in a Nutshell. Here he reviews ideas about the universe from Aristotle to Newton and Einstein, applying the principle of quantum mechanics to the big bang, black holes, and the universe's ultimate fate. He goes on to advance a "no boundary" theory of time and space that could lead to one unified theory and a true understanding of our universe. The Theory Of Everything presents the most complex theories, both past and present, of physics; yet it remains clear and accessible. It will enlighten readers and expose them to the rich history of scientific thought and the complexities of the universe in which we live.
