Book Description

Based on 40 years of research and the experience of hundreds of patients, this title offers the first effective protocol for reversing the auto-immune disorder fibromyalgia. The program treats the cause of the disease, not the symptoms, by using guiafenesin, a well-known over-the-counter medication. Guaifenesin has successfully treated 90% of the authors cases without side effects.

Download Description

Fibromyalgia is a painful disorder for which mainstream medicine has no solution other than heavy, and often ineffective, use of painkillers, along with lifestyle changes. It affects 20 million Americans, with high rates of occurrence in women. Related to rheumatoid arthritis, it too is an autoimmune disorder involving muscular pain, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, and depression. 'What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia' is the first book to offer a treatment program combining diet and exercise recommendations with the use of guaifenesin, a well-known medication available over the counter. A common ingredient in cough medicine, guaifenesin is so safe it is one of the few drugs in the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR) with no known side effects listed. Dr. St. Amand was inspired by his own fibromyalgia to research available treatments, and he developed this revolutionary program as a result. Over 4 decades of his research culminate in this program--which treats the causes of the condition, not just the symptoms. It has successfully eliminated symptoms in 80 percent of his patients' cases. Dr. St. Amand has discovered how to put fibromyalgia into remission so patients can return to their normal lives, and shares the secret for the first time in this book.

1 out of 5 stars This won't be the answer for everyone..........2007-10-16

Please keep in mind that not everyone who tries guaifenesin (which is the name of the drug in Mucinex) will be cured of Fibromyalgia. I wasn't, despite being super careful to avoid salicylates. My guess is that, since Fibro is a bit of a wastebasket diagnosis, this will help some forms of Fibro, but not others. Definitely try the method in this book if you've been diagnosed with Fibro, but try to get it second-hand or from your library in case it doesn't work for you. Good luck! We'll find a cure for all of us someday...

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2007-09-10

I go to the doctor who wrote this book for my Fibromyalgia, and I truly believe that there is no other treatment known or practiced right now that actually treats this disease; so how awesome is it that I have found the world's leading authority on Fibromyalgia who has written a comprehensive book and who I can go to for treatment! Read this book! whether you have Fibromyalgia or know someone who does, this will give you an incredible amount of information on everything from what the disease is and how it affects the body, to how to do the protocol and find support and help! I am 31 now and would probably be bed ridden hadn't I found out about the guaifenesin protocol that's written about in this book, and that I myself am on. It's true that it's not easy, especially in the beginning, but truthfully the alternative is horribly worse. Fibromyalgia will not get better or go away on it's own, baring a miracle, it continues to get worse over time, so if you have it and don't do something to treat it, you will get worse and worse until you will probably not be able to function whatsoever. Dr. St. Amand is currently doing a study on Fibromyalgia at the City of Hope in Duarte, California, which is a leading authority on cancer and other health issues. People come from all over the world to get treatment at City of Hope, and people also come from all over the world to see Dr. St. Amand. I am excited to see what the outcome of the study is and hope that the good doctor can help all of us with Fibromyalgia even more! Dr. St. Amand and his co-author Claudia are two of the most selfless and caring people; they have dedicated their lives to helping those with Fibromyalgia, and they both have Fibromyalgia themselves so they know first hand all about this disease! This is a must read and a must do protocol for anyone suffering with Fibromyalgia, it works! I am living proof of it, and thankful beyond words that I have hope of reversing this disease completely and getting a more active and healthy life again! You can do it too, and you are not alone, people all over the U.S. and the world are doing this guaifenesin protocol and reversing the disease and getting back to life!

5 out of 5 stars My wife cried as she read this book.......2007-06-16

Finally she wasn't alone. She wasn't crazy. It's a real disease.

The protocol is sound, and it works. It all depends on an over-the-counter medication most of us have used at one time or another and avoiding some topical ingrediants found in lotions, makeup, etc. It's not hard to do. As the body begins to heal, it does cause bad days. Everyone responds differently, but in the end my wife has gone from being almost incapacitated to having more good days than bad. Not bad for a $10 book and some medication we can buy for maybe $15/month. (I checked prices here, and they're much higher--sorry, Amazon.)

You can't go wrong with this book. If you try it and nothing happens, try something else. Maybe you have a different condition. If you try it and the next day you feel like you were hit by a truck, believe it or not, you're on the way to much better days. But don't do it alone. Go to the web site in the book and join the online support group. Ask questions. They'll be happy to help you through it.

5 out of 5 stars This book can change your life.......2007-06-08

My husband led me to this book five years ago. I studied the book and on-line support group plus website and began the protocol. My fibromyalgia has reversed to its level of about 25 years ago and my life is so much better. If you decide to do this you must do it exactly but if you do you can regain the life you once knew. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my mother .......2007-03-28

I bought this book for a friend who was recently diagnosed with FM. Almost 3 years ago, I bought this same book for my mother and she praises it everyday since. Fibro had taken over her life: she couldn't walk the mall, crochet any blankets or booties, or even pick-up her grandchildren for big hugs. My mother was only 52 years old at the time and her body made her act like she was 82 years old. One week after reading the book and starting the guai-protocol, she already felt better. The pain was passing with each and every day. Some weeks, she would "cycle", just like the book said, but she was crocheting again and enjoying her grandchildren.......she even chased my 1 year old around. This book literally saved her life. I recommend reading it to anyone who feels like fibro has punched them in the stomach.
I'm anxious for my dear friend to read and start this protocol, so she can regain her life as well.

          Book Description

Children's work is on the increase in all parts of the world, including the affluent countries of Europe and North America, and is closely linked with the processes of globalization. It can take on widely differing forms and can harm children, but also benefit them. This book's approach is distinctive: it endeavors to understand working children, and their ways of living and acting, from their own perspective. It is interested in the children's own experiences and hopes, especially their attempts to speak out in public and to fight together against exploitation and discrimination. It shows that children frequently see and evaluate their work differently from adults, and that measures directed against children's work are not always in the interests of the children. It argues for a new, subject-oriented approach in dealing with children's work, which takes account of socio-cultural contexts, both in theory and practice.

Another story of a brilliant man who forged through life starting as the underdog and ending up at the top of his game only to throw it all away because of ego and needing to be in total control of everything and everybody. The end of this story is not in the book but on Court TV and coming to a close soon. What a waste of talent.

4 out of 5 stars A Talented But Tragic Figure In The Music Biz.......2003-10-29

Phil Spector is an enigma: A pop music icon who has obviously danced with his demons on many occasions. Richard Williams' book does a fine job of detailing Spector's upbringing, his early career, his domination of the charts with his Philles label, his years spent "in hiding", and his past attempts to stage a "come back." Very little about Spector's current legal woes is included, but it is touched upon. The book is filled with first-hand accounts from Spector's friends and colleagues (yes, according to these sources, Spector pulled a gun on several musicians, including Stevie Wonder). If you want to know what it was like working with him, this book paints the picture masterfully. He may have been very talented, but after reading this book, I'm glad I was never stuck in a studio with him!

New Woman Hybridities explores the diversity of meanings ascribed to the turn-of-the-century New Woman in the context of cultural debates conducted within and across a wide range of national frameworks. Individual chapters by international scholars scrutinize the flow of ideas, images and textual parameters of New Woman discourses in the UK, North America, Europe, and Japan, elucidating the national and ethnic hybridity of the 'modern woman' by locating this figure within both international consumer culture and feminist writing.

These papers from the 30th University of Manchester International Broadcasting Symposium feature contributions from major figures in the worlds of broadcasting and academia. They explore the proliferation of new, supposedly unregulated media like the Internet; the opening up of broadcasting through digital technology; and the increasingly international nature of the broadcasting medium itself. The legal, economic, and technological issues that now take precedence are detailed.

                      Book Description

Fixed Effects Regression Methods for Longitudinal Data Using SAS is an invaluable resource for all researchers interested in adding fixed effects regression methods to their tool kit of statistical techniques. First introduced by economists, fixed effects methods are gaining widespread use throughout the social sciences. Designed to eliminate major biases from regression models with multiple observations (usually longitudinal) for each subject (usually a person), fixed effects methods essentially offer control for all stable characteristics of the subjects, even characteristics that are difficult or impossible to measure. This straightforward and thorough text shows you how to estimate fixed effects models with several SAS procedures that are appropriate for different kinds of outcome variables. The theoretical background of each model is explained, and the models are then illustrated with detailed examples using real data. The book contains thorough discussions of the following uses of SAS procedures: PROC GLM for estimating fixed effects linear models for quantitative outcomes, PROC LOGISTIC for estimating fixed effects logistic regression models, PROC PHREG for estimating fixed effects Cox regression models for repeated event data, PROC GENMOD for estimating fixed effects Poisson regression models for count data, PROC CALIS for estimating fixed effects structural equation models. To gain the most benefit from this book, readers should be familiar with multiple linear regression, have practical experience using multiple regression on real data, and be comfortable interpreting the output from a regression analysis. An understanding of logistic regression and Poisson regression is a plus. Some experience with SAS is helpful, but not required.

"Limerick is one of the most engaging historians writing today."—Richard White

The "settling" of the American West has been perceived throughout the world as a series of quaint, violent, and romantic adventures. But in fact, Patricia Nelson Limerick argues, the West has a history grounded primarily in economic reality—in hardheaded questions of profit, loss, competition, and consolidation. Here she interprets the stories and the characters in a new way: the trappers, traders, Indians, farmers, oilmen, cowboys, and sheriffs of the Old West "meant business" in more ways than one, and their descendents mean business today. 28 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Social & Intellectual History.......2006-11-03

Limerick's text is quite simply the most important work in social and intellectual history of the American West of the past several decades. Scholarly yet readable, the appropriately documented text includes historic photographs as well. The final chapter, "The Burdens of Western American History," is commonly and effectively used in college classes in history, American Studies, environmental ethics, and other areas. A GREAT text to give to the child or nephew/niece going off to college because it introduces the reader to such a wide, interdisciplinary context of understanding.

Limerick jumps from decade to decade in this book. I would not suggest this book to anyone. I had to just make myself finish it it was horrible.

4 out of 5 stars while a bit pessimistic it has its good points.......2002-05-25

In The Legacy of Conquest, Patricia Nelson Limerick puts forth her thesis that the conquest of the Trans-Mississippi West is an ongoing economically driven process. Focusing on the West as a physical place rather than a mythic ideal, the author demonstrates how the frontier never closed and that the conquest continues to this day. The book looks at the conquerors of the West and the obstacles they face from Native peoples, westward expansion, immigration, and government interference or the lack thereof. Those coming west did not come with the idea of destroying the land or the Indians, but with the hope of economic improvement and opportunity.
Few people coming west concerned themselves with the Native Americans whose land they began to occupy. Farmers, ranchers, and miners seeking wealth worried more about their own survival than the survival of Indians. Many pioneers portrayed themselves as victims when their dreams of wealth came face to face with the reality of grasshopper plagues, overgrazed ranges, and barren mines. This self-victimization continues to this day with these same groups decrying government waste while asking for subsidies. However, some who came to the west did become true victims.
Some of those who came west in an attempt to make their fortune mining ended up working in the mines of large companies or working other low paying jobs. Those who worked in the mines put themselves in grave danger everyday. With no safety regulations and labor laws that blamed workers for their injuries, mining was one of the deadliest occupations. Attempts to unionize Mineworkers led to mine owners using violence and murder to dissuade union membership. Many who worked the mines immigrated from England and Ireland. These European immigrants, while low on the class scale, were not as low as those who came from a different ethnic background.
Non-white immigrants all faced similar experiences. Chinese immigrants, hoping to improve their lives, faced hostility from all sides. Local and state governments barred them from living in certain areas, bringing over their families, and working in all but the most menial and dangerous of occupations. Mexicans and Latinos who came to work in agriculture faced constant harassment and persecution that continues to this day. The idea that an immigrant is taking a job from an American plays a large part in anti-immigration movements to this day. Unfortunately, most who oppose immigration refuse to realize that the jobs immigrants perform are ones that most Americans consider to menial or low paying to perform. Limerick's weaving of the past and present together shows how the problems of the Old West are still with us today.
The author does an excellent job of examining the past problems of the West and showing how they are unresolved. Arguments between ranchers and the federal government persist over grazing fees. Farmers receive payments for not growing certain crops. Mining laws allow companies to buy land for a shockingly low price and strip it of its mineral worth and beauty. Native Americans, pushed onto reservations, are now suing for the enforcement of past treaties. Limerick shows the irony of the attitude of the West in pushing the federal government away with one hand while reaching for a handout with the other.
While The Legacy of Conquest is highly recommended to students of American history, it does have its flaws. The author overuses metaphor in the early chapters of the book, making it read more like an opinion piece than a historical one. The author's inclusion of the Mormon Church's problems seems forced and does not belong in a book about the economically driven conquest of the American West. Limerick also uses a non-chronological approach that may bother some readers. However, the author does an excellent job at combining primary and secondary sources into an interesting book. Despite some minor problems, Limerick shows that while the appearance of the West changes the conquest of the West continues.

                      3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2002-04-27

Considering that "Legacy of Conquest" is one of those touchstone must reads for anyone in "New Western History" this book was a disappointmememt. Limerick continuously shifts from the present to the past and back again the book becomes quite disjointed and sometimes confusing.

After reading the book I now know how a graduate course I took on the American West was structured. The professor had to be a disciple of Limerick's thesis.

I do agree that the West has constantly portrayed itself as victim, whether being victimized by Indians, railroads or mining, oil and timber interests or the federal government. During boom times Westerners strut and show off their rugged individualism; but when the bust comes and it always does, they are the first with their hand out for help. Western states are the first to complain when cities like New York ask for aid to fund mass transit, but raise their grazing fees or irrigation costs they scream that big government is taking advantage of them.

If Limerick had chosen either the present day West or the West of the 19th century and stuck to one or the other the book would have been more enjoyable. Despite my misgivings anyone interested in New Western History should read the book, however anyone else who takes a different view of this current philosophy in vogue of western history should be prepared for disappointment.

                      1 out of 5 stars Grossly overrated.......2001-08-09

While making a big case of the worst, this book simply overlooks the masses of positive influences that came from Westward Expansion. Sure any author has a right to present a thesis; 1st Amendment, academic freedom, etc., etc. Yet any reader should temper the modern "politically correct," hate America, opression studies 101 type of materials with other views like Ray Allen Billington, Walter Prescott Webb, or Frederick Jackson Turner.

                      4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2003-06-23

This book is the fourth volume in the wonderful Illustrated History of the World Series. Focusing exclusively on the west, this volume covers the Middle East from the Sassasnid Empire through the spread of Islam and on to the rise of the Ottoman Empire. Then, Eastern Europe is examined through the development of the Byzantine Empire, and its influences to the north on Russia and Eastern Europe. Finally, Western Europe is covered, from about 1000 A.D. to the flowering of Medieval Europe. Along the way, the reader is treated to many colorful maps and pictures, and interesting sidebars.

This book is another very good, which continues the quality one expects from this series. This is quite an interesting look at an interesting time. I highly recommend this book.

The Rise of Islam, The Byzentine Empire, and the Beginnings of Modern Europe

The Age of Diverging Traditions is volume four of a ten volume series called The Illustrated History of the World. The first volume covered the origins of the human race through the first civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. The second volume in the series reviewed the early cultures of India and China and then moved on to discuss Greek civilization. The third volume covered the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, from 800 BCE to 600 CE. This fourth volume surveys the rise of Islam, the Arab empires, the decline of the Byzentine Empire, and the beginnings of modern Europe.

The book is filled with beautiful color illustrations. Every page has at least one and most are photographs of artifacts, art works, or scenes. The text is well written and emphasizes brief summaries rather than scholarly examination. This makes it a good basic introduction and outline, but may be less useful to someone who wants to look at these subjects in greater depth. The lack of any bibliography of further readings is also a drawback for those wanting to seek more information. A two-page time chart of the period helps to put events in perspective. The chapter contents are confusingly placed at the end of the book, but they are well done and helpful for getting an overview of the author's approach. A two page listing of all the books in the series with their section and chapter titles helps to put the material into the broader view of all world history.

If you want an entertaining introduction to the beginnings of Islam, the early Arabic empires, the decline and end of the Byzentine empire, the Mongolian empire of Chingis Khan, the rise of the Ottaman Turks, and the beginnings of Western Europe, this is a great book to read. Surprisingly, you will have to read volume five for an introduction to the Crusades since Roberts only devotes one page to them in this volume. The beginnings of Islam is well treated, even though Muhammad himself is only mentioned in passing. Byzantium's history and influence are well documented and an explanation of the Iconoclasm dispute is well done. The last section on the formation of modern Europe through the rise of Charlemagne, and the increasing influence of the papacy is the most detailed account in the volume.

The type face is large and the lines are amply spaced. Couple this with the copious illustrations and the book is actually a very quick read for its size and length. It is a few steps above the approach of Dorling Kindersley books that are predominately illustrations with supporting text. With Roberts, the text is the major part, but the illustrations are definitely more than an after thought. This is a good introduction for the general reader. It is not going to be a lasting reference book that you will turn to again and again. Read it once and move on.

                              1 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2005-03-21

This is not a very good textbook and should not be considered if you desire to learn chemistry. The text is not understandable even though I have a masters in chemistry from CalTech.

The organization is not well structured and it's hard to believe that people actually like this book. The writers of this book try to "cram" as much information as possible in each chapter which is NOT necessary. It could be sucessfuly done if they spread out the information and concepts.

HOWEVER, he book problems are excellent. I'll give them that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of first year chemistry.......2003-06-01

This book is very well written, with helpful diagrams and detailed examples. It is easy to understand and text and with this book it is truly not hard to understand chemistry and do well. I easily got an A in Chemistry I and I believe that everyone who failed the class simply didn't look over the book or their notes after class. It certainly wasn't the fault of the professor or the text- both explained chemistry very well.

                              5 out of 5 stars From D to B+.......2003-04-10

I had difficulties solving chemistry problems I also bought many books but when I found this one in My local library I was extremely happy with the simplicity of the text problem examples
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK FOR CHEMISTRY CLASS EVER ....I HAD A D IN MY FIRST CHEMISTRY CLASS NOW I AM GETTING As AND Bs Every household should have one .... The best book by far

                              5 out of 5 stars Chemistry - A Study in Life.......2000-12-05

This book is a leader in the chemistry field, superior to any I've seen. Its explanations are thorough, yet concise. If you are a student, and you have any doubts about the effectiveness of this book, expel them from your mind. This is a book for autonomous thinkers, as it gives you a strong footing in intermediate Chemistry, allowing you to think for yourself. The media companion is also helpful. It brings the book to life, helping those students who work best with visual stimulus. Perhaps you do not have a computer in your home, but take the time to use this tool at your school. As for the teachers, you may have my assurance that my time spent as a student using this book was made more complete only by my professor's lectures. Please consider this book a valuable addition to your Chemistry library.

                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-11-20

This book was more helpful for me than my professors' lectures! It is very helpful for all general chem students, including those who hate chemistry (I do not).
