Innerfaith Ministries of Palm Springs.......2007-01-17
Thank you for asking. You know I sent for this book during a very busy time for the Post Office; yet I got the book quickly and in fine shape. I really needed it when I got it. I had to give an overview of church bookkeeping and accounting to my church last week. I used the book to outline my presentation to the Finance Committee! I was a hit, thanks to the book. They appointed me bookkeeper for the church. I told them that I could not accept the position on a permanant basis. I did accept it as a tempt until they get a permanent (younger person--I'm 76).
Since you have been sooooooo nice, could you recommend a Basic Accounting book that I could use as the church's bookkeepper? I would like to give our small church (300-350 people) some good accounting methods/principles.
The Basis Accounting book should be for just basic accounting, not church accounting or bookkeepping. I just got that from you. You're great.
Thank you sooooo much,
George Mucherson
church accounting.......2007-01-09
This truly is a basic book. It deals substantially with controls and not as much with accounting peculiar to churches, based on accepted accounting principles. Basic is the operative word. Not much help to someone having an understanding of for profit accounting and looking specifically for help with proper church accounting.
Basic Accounting for Churches.......2006-08-22
Basic to the point of 1 +1 = 2. Obsolete acounting, societal and theological principles. Written as if only males were to read it and only untrained, uneducated and uninspired male pastors would be reading the book. Needs thorough updating regarding software and computers, or better yet, to be removed from available references. A waste of money and overpriced for an older paperback.
Basic Accounting for Churches.......2006-08-04
This is a very basic manual. Especially good for those with little or no accounting or financial background.
Not very helpful.......2005-07-07
This was published in 1994 - it still talks about "dot matrix printers" and manual accounting...save your money and look at some other really terrific resources online (specifically by Zondervan - very good). Not helpful at all if you know even basic accounting.

Book Description
Deserts provide a seemingly hostile environment in which plants can, nevertheless, survive and grow. The book considers the ecological problems posed by the desert environment, and the varied physiological and ecological strategies adopted by desert succulents to overcome these problems.^L Much previously unpublished data on the physiological ecology of the succulent flora of southern Africa is presented--the results of more than ten years' work by the authors, both in the field and the laboratory. This new information forms the basis for a better understanding of the water relations and carbon balance of succulents during short and long term drought and leads the authors to a new definition of succulence as a tool for the temporary storage of water, essential for the conservation of physiological performance during times of drought. The authors conclude by providing a basic scheme in which the significant functional aspects of succulent life strategies are given, revealing the main trends in the biology of these fascinating plants.

Book Description
Itsy dreams about earth before it had an atmosphere. She watches as volcanos, sun, and weather create the atmosphere and the seeds of life. She sees life start in the seas from chemicals lightning created in the atmosphere. She learns about plants having to come first and put oxygen into the air before animals could live. Itsy observes as single cells become plants and slowly evolve into large animals. Upon awakening, she learns that her dream is just how scientists think life came about on earth.

Evolution and more.......2000-03-27
The kids loved it - Me, I'm so impressed that the author managed to tell about evolution in a way that avoids anything that offends any religion. How? Telling you would spoil the book because it has a surprise ending.
Oh, there is more than evolution here. It goes through what happened on earth to give it a carbon dioxide atmosphere, then oxygen, and rain to break rocks down into soil.
The earth had carbon dioxide before fossil fuels - how about that.
Any Kid Can Understand This.......2000-03-27
I've read all eight books in the "As Dreamed by Itsy" series to my 5 and 7 year olds. They're wonderful, all eight of them, so when you look at the others, you'll find this same review for all eight.
My kids loved them and wanted to hear them over an over. I noticed that with each reading, they comprehended a little more about the story. Even the first reading they loved and picked up a lot of information from, but they were so interested in the story to pay much attention to the concepts. After all, they didn't view the story as a lesson in science. On later readings they showed a great deal of interest and even awe at that the world really operates in such ways.
And me - I'm not a scientist, am even afraid of science, but this was easy. I picked up more from these stories than I learned in high school. Of course the kids asked questions I couldn't answer (but not too many), but they ask such questions every time we go to the park or the supermarket. I just passed off their questions in the usual way. Now when I someone says something about the Big Bang Theory, molecules or such, I feel well enough informed that I no longer quickly change the subject.
I recommend the books and hope the publisher adds more titles soon.

Book Description
This is an updated version of the book published in 1985. QCD-motivated, it gives a detailed description of hadron structure and soft interactions in the additive quark model, where hadrons are regarded as composite systems of dressed quarks.
In the past decade it has become clear that nonperturbative QCD, responsible for soft hadronic processes, may differ rather drastically from perturbative QCD. The understanding of nonperturbative QCD requires a detailed investigation of the experiments and the theoretical approaches. Bearing this in mind, the book has been rewritten paying special attention to the interplay of soft hadronic collisions and the quark model. It is at the crossroads of these domains that peculiar features of strong QCD reveal themselves.
The book discusses constituent quarks, diquarks, the massive effective gluons and the problem of scalar isoscalar mesons. The quark-gluonium classification of meson states is also given. Experimentally observed properties of hadrons are presented together with the corresponding theoretical interpretation in the framework of the composite hadron structure.
The text includes a large theoretical part, which shows how to treat composite systems (including relativistic ones) with a technique based on spectral integration. This technique provides the possibility of handling hadrons as weakly bound systems of quarks and, at the same time, takes into account confinement.
Attention is focused on the composite structure revealing itself in high energy hadron collisions. Fields of applicability of the additive quark model are discussed, as is colour screening in hadronic collisions at high and superhigh energies. Along with a detailed presentation of hadron-hadron collisions, a description of hadron-nucleus collisions is given.

Then the news comes from the East Coast. Alvin's younger brother Jimmy has vanished from the midst of a Canada Day crowd in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Is he dead? Sleuthing irritably about Sydney on Alvin's behalf, Camilla manages to make the usual quota of people froth at the mouth, including Jimmy's frantic family and forlorn friends. Customer Reviews:
A Bump In The Road.......2003-02-19
I really enjoyed the first two Camilla MacPhee stories. So, I was really looking forward to this third adventure. I must say that I was very disappointed. I found that the "bad guy" was identified early on in the story. I found many of the new characters flat and wooden, while the supporting characters did grow a little. I think the thing that I disliked the most was that the author allowed her politics to enter the story. Sorry, but I'm not interested. A mystery should allow me to get away from politics, not find them. I understand that a new Camilla MacPhee story is due in 2003. I can only hope that this was just a bump on the road, rather than the future direction.
A Hiccup on the road to Sydney.......2003-02-19
I really enjoyed Mary Jane Maffini's first two Camilla MacPhee stories. So, I was really looking forward to this one. I'm afraid I was truly disappointed. I found that I knew the identity of the "bad guy" very early on. The story took several predictable twists as it moved along. But, I think the thing that I disliked the most was that the author allowed her politics to enter the story. Sorry, but I'm not interested. There is slated to be a fourth Camilla MacPhee mystery dues in 2003. Hopefully, this will have just been a poor outing.
Camilla's Cross-Country Capers.......2002-08-11
The third entry in the Camilla MacPhee series finds the feisty Ottawa victims' advocate looking forward to life without her bete noire assistant, the annoying Alvin Ferguson, who has secured a job at an upscale local gallery. Just before Camilla can hoist a cold one in celebration, word comes from Alvin's family in Sidney, Nova Scotia, that his vulnerable younger brother has disappeared. The usually acerbic Alvin is paralysed with grief, but Camilla comes to the rescue, along with the martial strategy of the venerable Violet Parnell. In a borrowed Buick, they make a whirlwind trip to the Maritimes in search of clues to the boy's sudden vanishing. Brain-damaged by a tragic accident years ago, is he the angelic innocent he seems, or does his naivete mask a darker side? Is his quirky family a loyal team, or do they have something to hide, too? What are the police concealing in their Young Offender files?
Maffini keeps the plot boiling as Alvin and Camilla comb alleys and interview a chip stand owner to trace Jimmy's last hours, stirring up old sins which threaten to destroy guarded lives. As usual, her trademark tongue-in-cheek humour provides a counterfoil to serious events: "You don't hear a slogan that says 'See Canada by Dark,' and for good reason." The redoubtable Mrs. Parnell plans World War II strategy as their unlikely squad, fuelled by Tim Horton doughnuts, speeds across provinces. Gussie the dog provides flatulent companionship and readers discover a touching new side to the cats-eye-glassed Alvin. Serving as an attractive and compelling frame is the famed Ottawa Bluesfest, a music festival which may be playing Camilla's swan song.

Book Description
In April 1291, a Mamluk army laid siege to Acre, the last great Crusader fortress in the Holy Land. For six weeks, the siege dragged on until the Mamluks took the outer wall, which had been breached in several places. The Military Orders drove back the Mamluks temporarily, but three days later the inner wall was breached. King Henry escaped, but the bulk of the defenders and most of the citizens perished in the fighting or were sold into slavery. The surviving knights fell back to their fortress, resisting for ten days, until the Mamluks broke through. This book depicts the dramatic collapse of this great fortress, whose demise marked the end of the Crusades in the Holy Land.
Customer Reviews:
Good summary but no new content.......2006-08-21
Good book for those looking for an introduction to the history of the end of the Crusader states. Much of it is spent reviewing the previous 100 year history of the Crusader states and there is very little new content on the Fall of Acre.
A Good Story Despite The Chaos.......2006-04-27
For the most part, this book is written at the usual high standard that one expects from Osprey books. Unfortunately, there are a few exceptions. First, the maps are disappointing. The font is so small that the reader will need to break out a magnifying glass. This font size was probably selected so that a ton of information could be placed on the map. The sad part is that much of this information is unnecessary. The legends are so full of data as to make the map confusing and thus, practically useless. When Pope Nicholas IV dies in Rome, there is no need to put a marker on the map of Italy to show where the city is located. In addition, some maps contain a chaotic mixture of both troop movements and political movements. The publisher would have been better off to eliminate the irrelevant information and make the map easier to read.
The maps are not the only confusing aspect of this book. The siege of Acre contains several notable characters who are clearly relevant. Unfortunately, they are conspicuously absent in the chapter on Opposing Commanders. The confusion is made worse by the fact that their titles have only subtle differences. For example, the Commanders chapter describes the Grand Master of the Hospitallers. He is subsequently wounded and evacuated by sea. The text of the battle describes the valiant death of the Hospitaller Matthew de Clermont. Unless the reader is paying attention, there is confusion over whether this person died or was evacuated. Only by going back through the text can one clarify that de Clermont was a Marshal and not the Grand Master (i.e.: two different people). The text of the book is consistent. The problem is that there are numerous people of significance discussed in the text but not all of them are noted in the "Opposing Commanders" chapter at the beginning of the book.
Despite these two confusing traits, the rest of the book is clearly well done. The 3-D bird's eye view maps are excellent and the full color battle scenes are superb. The text not only describes the siege of Acre, but also the fall of Tripoli and other significant events during this time. It is a good overview of this battle. Unfortunately, the chaos that took hold of the city during its final moments appears to have traveled through time and influenced some of the writing. Despite the confusing maps and names, it is still a good little read.
Introductory book on the siege of Acre.......2005-10-02
I found David Nicolle's book on the siege of Acre to be pretty informative considering that there isn't much written about this siege and the fall of the major Crusader city which signaled the end of the Latin kingdom forever. In a typical Osprey Campaign series, the book basically summarized the entire war the Malmuk wages against the their neigbors during the last few years leading up to the fall of Acre. The primary sources were probably too few to provide a lot of details but it also prevent massive information overload as well.
I read the previous written review and thought the writer there expected too much from such a short book. But he does have certain points which Mr. Nicolle should have included, an order of battle, a good clear 3D map of Acre with scales in a single page instead of the map being compromised by a page divider. But that previous reviewer is wrong on one thing, Mr. Nicolle does give a clear reasons why the fortress city fell. Morale failure was key factor and despite of the questionable number of 15,000 defenders, there weren't too many real warriors among that questionable number. The city defense seem to be centered around the military orders and they don't seem to be in high numbers. Advanced mining and siege artillery did most of the damages. I think the lack of primary sources here is responsible for the lack of number tally.
While the book wasn't as totally detail or totally informative as I liked, it was still pretty good reading and gives any readers who are not total experts on this field a nice summarized account of the fall of Acre and the events that led up to it.
More Art History than Military History.......2005-09-30
Dr. David Nicolle has proven in his numerous works that he is an expert on Medieval Mideastern history; however, his efforts in the Osprey Campaign series are written more from the cultural perspective than as military history. In Acre 1291, Campaign #154, Dr. Nicolle says a great deal about Muslim politics and culture in the 13th Century, but very little about the actual siege - less than 14 pages. I realize that Medieval sources limit the detail available, but Nicolle makes no effort to outline order of battle for either side and his tactical maps do not even have scale markers. The lead-up to the siege is particularly rambling and unfocused, including a pointless diversion to discuss Mamluke campaigns against the Nubians. Readers who enjoy art and cultural history may enjoy this volume, but readers looking for military history will be sadly disappointed.
Dr. Nicolle's opening introduction is actually quite good in summarizing this era, particularly in noting the impact of Mongol invasions on Islamic society (making it more inward-looking, less progressive) and the fact that Sunni leaders revived the concept of Jihad - not just against Western Crusaders, but Shia as well. Modern readers interested in the modern Mideast may note some interesting and incisive comments in this section. The section on opposing commanders provides no real insight on the leadership abilities of either and the section on Opposing armies is particularly weak. Dr. Nicolle provides very little information on the organization or tactics of the Mamluks and he makes only the most general estimates about the relative size of the opposing forces (about 15,000 Christian troops versus lots and lots of Muslims). Since Nicolle does note that the Mamluk Army was not particularly large, it is not clear to me after reading this account why they won at all. Dr. Nicolle's maps also do not support the narrative very well, with the 2-D maps `zoomed out' too far (sometimes hard to even spot Acre without a magnifying glass) and the 3-D BEV maps - while pretty - actually don't say very much. Most of the BEV legends depict dispositions, rather than actions and I found it amazing that these maps lacked scales. Looking at a modern 1:50,000-scale map of Acre, it is clear that the wall facing the landside was only about 800 meters long. Given that Christian naval superiority prevented any Muslim attack from seaward, this would mean that the Christians could have had up to ten men defending EACH METER of wall, while keeping a 30% reserve (assuming 20% of the troops were sick or non-operational). Even though these numbers are generalized, it seems clear that the Crusaders had plenty of troops to man the while - and Nicolle admits that they had enough left over to mount frequent raids on the Muslim army - so why did they lose? Given that both sides had similar weapons and the Mamluks probably had no more than 3-1 numerical superiority (which was balanced by the fortifications), it seems that this siege was far from a foregone conclusion. However, this author sheds very little light on the military aspects of the siege, other than noting the activities of several siege engines and a few sorties. Dr. Nicolle does note that a collapse in morale had a major impact upon the Crusaders, but this does not seem to follow from the relatively light losses described.

Book Description
This is the incredible story of one manÂ's vision of world commerce. William Paterson was a businessman and economic thinker far ahead of his time, whose place in history is assured. He founded the Bank of England, he helped broker the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England and, above all else, he envisaged a world where nations could trade unencumbered by monopolies and restrictive practices, and companies could be funded with international investment. All more than 300 years ago. In an attempt to realise his dream he set off on a daring voyage across half the globe to establish a trading emporium for the world at Darien, Panama. In the tradition of Longitude, The Man Who Saw the Future is the exciting story of buccaneers, political intrigue, economic vision, failed dreams, warring countries and dogged determination in the face of adversity.

Book Description
The rate at which the planet is losing its biodiversity, the implications of this loss, and possible remedies are the subject of much public and academic debate. This book shows how biodiversity can be protected through the involvement of local communities. The authors suggest that strict protection of threatened areas must be combined with involvement by local economies and societies. The book examines the experience of regions around the world where this approach has been tried, drawing upon the insights of political scientists, economists and social psychologists.

Biodiversity is the key indicator of a healthy planet and healthy society. Losses of biodiversity have now become widespread and current rates are potentially catastrophic for species and habitat integrity. Biodiversity, Sustainability and Human Communities advocates both the preservation of the best remaining habitats and the enhancement of new biodiverse habitats to ensure that they cope with human impact, climate change and alien species invasion. The authors argue that these aims can be achieved by a mix of strict protection, inclusive involvement of people inside and adjacent to reserves, and by combining livelihoods and social well-being in all future biodiversity management. Case studies from regions around the world, including Europe, the United States, Latin America and Africa are examined and discussed, and the contributors include political scientists, economists and ecologists.
