Product Description
From the unique perspective of partial differential equations (PDE), this self-contained book presents a systematic, advanced introduction to the BlackScholesMertons option pricing theory. A unified approach is used to model various types of option pricing as PDE problems, to derive pricing formulas as their solutions, and to design efficient algorithms from the numerical calculation of PDEs. In particular, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of American option pricing is treated based on free boundary problems, and the implied volatility as an inverse problem is solved in the optimal control framework of parabolic equations.

From a non-lawyer type..........2007-04-05
Being an architect, I thought this book about the legal profession just had to be dull, dry and just not interesting. I was wrong...I really enjoyed the personal stories of young men struggling in a profession and being mentored, and then mentoring others, which is typical of any true profession. I enjoyed the Tampa and Florida historical insights, the business aspects of the book, and the humor of Mr Jamieson. I couldn't put the book down...which really amazed this non-lawyer!
An insiders look at changing face of Tampa.......2006-12-19
Very few books illuminate the tremendous changes in Tampa over the last 40 years. If you are doing business in Tampa, this book is a must read to understand how Tampa business and politics work and why.
A great read for lawyers, Floridians and Tampans.......2006-07-23
This worthwhile book details many facts about the lives of former lawyer, Floridian and leader Chesterfield Smith and his long-time associate (and the book's author) Mike Jamieson. It is a terrific memory-jogger for this native Floridian and Tampa resident who is familiar with many of the events, issues and people mentioned in the book. Anyone who has witnessed the growth of the Tampa Bay area during the last 40 years will enjoy it - especially if you knew some of the people described.
Persona of "America's Lawyer".......2005-09-26
This memoir of Chesterfield Smith, a distinguished and revered lawyer dating back to Watergate days, is a study of his accomplishments, his law firm of Holland & Knight, and recollections by his protege and friend, Michael Jamieson. An interestng read by anybody in the legal profession, and even those of us who aren't.

Book Description
This book addresses the responses of plants to salinity. Although salinity is a common environmental factor for marine organisms, for the majority of land plants high soil salinity is an environmental constraint that limits growth, productivity, and normal plant functions. Salinity is particularly widespread in arid/semiarid climates where crop production depends on irrigation.
A comprehensive approach is taken in this book. After discussing salinity as an environmental soil factor and its global impact on ecosystems, plant responses are covered from the whole-plant level through metabolic changes to the underlying molecular and genetic mechanisms. In contrast to other books in this subject area, which focus on certain aspects of plant responses to salinity or are conference proceedings, this is the only comprehensive new book on this subject, written by experts in the field. The intended level of readership is graduate students and advanced researchers interested in environmental biology and specifically in the area of mechanisms of environment-plant interactions.

Russell's Intraoprative Monitorin Book.......2000-07-04
This is a technical book with appeal to intraoperative neurophysiologists and surgeons. It is a collection of articles from several authors. Most of the writing represents the group at Hershey Pennsylvania. It is a well written and balanced efrort on a difficult topic. It is among the most recent works on the topic and therefore among the most up-to-date. It does not give enought of the background and theory to be called a "primer", but it is a valuable text for anyone who has a serious interest in intaoperative neurophysiologic monitoring in the operating room. It would also be of value to those who are studying for one of the certification examinations in this clinical area.

Book Description
Scientific inference aims to understand the external world and the influence of our actions on it, and arises as an interaction of hypothesis, observation and inferential procedures. Of these, only the observations originate in the external world, although even they are the perceptions of the observer.
/
Nonuniqueness is a great problem to objective scientific inference. This book discusses the causes of nonuniqueness and suggests that they are not entirely removable. It argues that truth is not manifest and that progress in science is not sequential but is achieved by tentative theorization and systematic error elimination.

Book Description
(Prof. Dr. O. Marti, Universität Ulm, Deutschland) / "...The style of the book is exquisitely didactic. The basic laws and rules are explained concisely, usually rigorously proved,...The organization of the text ensures its flexibility when used as a textbook; the complicated examples and difficult exercises can be skirted in the basic course but they are shedding much light on the theory and will certainly be enjoyed by more curious students...To conclude, the book can be strongly recommended to undergraduate students of mechanics for its truly modern conception, instructive presentation and, most of all, for its excellent demonstration and examples. It can be expected that a pleasure from them will be shared by graduate students, too..." (Saxl, MATHEMATICA BOHEMICA) / "...To summarise, this is a splendid and stimulating book, which should be a great asset to students and to secondary school teachers of both physics and engineering." (G.L. Sewell, Queen Mary and Westfield College, London, UK)

This book was unique!!.......2001-10-18
This book was really different. Once Mr. Goldman got into med school he just wanted everything to happen at once. Mr. Goldman, soon to be Dr. Goldman, wanted his M.D., his family to be proud of him, and he wanted to have Cheryl as a girlfriend so that he could go on living a happy life. Then he was always complaining on how difficult he had it through med school, while I thought they had it pretty easy. The hospital should have made the time the students were working there more complicated for them and caused them to have more problems so that they would be able to make up their minds easier or harder about what divison or what field the med students would want to go in to. Then once he got out of med school he wanted to be recognized by everyone of the doctors and family members.
This book is unique because it tells about a person that went through med school and how it happened, and it was written by a doctor himself. He let the reader know how difficult it was to get through med school.
In summary, this book was very different while always letting you want to know more about what happens next, therefore this is a very funny book.

Customer Reviews:
A Fine Objective Study of Cu Chi.......2004-10-13
I purchased "Tunnels" to serve as historical background reading for a recent trip to Cu Chi, and was suprised to find such an informative source. Mangold and Penycate refrain from the usual Western bias that often plagues the Vietnam paperback genere and instead have created a very well researched and objective study of Cu Chi province and its unique history.
Most of the research is composed of countless interviews with American military personel, coupled with very enlightening interviews with NLF leaders and guerrillas. Aside from simply providing military analysis, the authors dig into the history, culture and society of Vietnam, which lends to an interesting "sociological and historical context" to the creation of the Cu Chi Tunnels and the incrediable endurance of the Vietnamese people.
Most interesting were the views of the Vietnamese fighting and surviving in the tunnels - enduring the full wrath of American military might being unleashed a few shallow meters above their heads. Vietnam was a brutal event from a Western perspective, but actually hearing tales from the NLF side makes the conflict seem all the more horrible. Mangold and Penycate give a face to the elusive Viet Cong, and the reader discovers names, histories and lives to accompany those Vietnamese faces.
Aside from strictly discussing the tunnels, the authors cover the whole of Cu Chi Province and its seemingly everpresent role in the numerous Indochina wars. Being close to Saigon, Cu Chi was a major hub for NLF activity and for the first years of the Second Indochina war, served as a nearly impenatarble Viet Cong stronghold. However, as American tactics evolved and mobility became a key aspect of American strategy, Cu Chi became a prime target for American search and destroy missions and massive B-52 strikes - essentially making Cu Chi one of the most heavily bombed areas in the Vietnamese theatre.
Still, once the bombs ceased to fall, and the end of the war came to bear, the people returned to Cu Chi and once again rebuilt their lives, just as they had with the Japanese, then the French, and ultimately the Americans.
I am very torn!.......2004-04-28
I have to say that this book is a necessary read, but mainly because it is the only one written on the subject. It is well written and very descriptive but I fear the area it is most descriptive about is not what the title implied. I thought this was going to be a history of the tunnel rats when in fact that was only a small part. There is much more praise and accolation for the communist defenders than there is for the rats. I have to say, right up front, that as an American this can be a painful book to read. There are no holds barred when discussing the tunnel defenders point of view...you will hear many stories of Americans being killed ruthlessly. For those who have not come to grip with this war the book may be too much. Some say this account is simply unbiased but I feel that is not true. There seems an subtle leaning towards the american side being 100% in the wrong and the brave tunnel fighters being the heroes...that was disturbing. Maybe this book was necessary as most of those I read are written from the opposite bias but it is disturbing none-the-less. I got the same sort of feeling when I read Chester Wilmots 'struggle for europe', another british history that seemed like it was unfairly taking jabs at America and her soldiers. In summary I feel it is necessary to read this account, since it is the only history of these amazing soldiers, but please go into it knowing you will be disturbed by many things you read.
i write the review with tears in my eyes.......2004-01-06
The book is for me a followup on a long term interest. I was active in the anti-war movement in highschool and was in the US Army when the war ended in 1975. My uncle fought there for 3 years and i remember well his envelopes with the 'free' in the postage field. My father and i fought bitterly over the war and never mentioned it after i left home. But my memories can be only a dim shadow of those who were there, and it is to those to whom this book is addressed.
It doesn't glorify war. Yet i come away from reading it with the firm conviction i felt when reading the _Pentagon Papers_ that the US had supported the wrong side in a civil war. The heroism of the tunnel dwellers is obvious from the facts. The book is organized by topic: women, doctors, American tunnel rats etc. It is not meant to be a complete story but a narrative to tell a story with a moral. The very ground sheltered the VietNamese in their war against: the Japanese, the French and lastly the Americans.
It is not an earthshaking must read like _Hell in a very small place_ nor as complete as Stanley Karnow _Vietnam_

Not your typical war book. I loved the fact that it tells both sides also. There are also a lot of suprises in the book where you almost find it hard to believe. like where they find a tunnel that goes up into a tree for VC snipers. Also has lots of maps and photographs.great book read it twice so far.
Book Description
At the height of the Vietnam conflict, a complex system of secret underground tunnels sprawled from Cu Chi Province to the edge of Saigon. In these burrows, the Viet Cong cached their weapons, tended their wounded, and prepared to strike. They had only one enemy: U.S. soldiers small and wiry enough to maneuver through the guerrillas’ narrow domain.
The brave souls who descended into these hellholes were known as “tunnel rats.” Armed with only pistols and K-bar knives, these men inched their way through the steamy darkness where any number of horrors could be awaiting them–bullets, booby traps, a tossed grenade. Using firsthand accounts from men and women on both sides who fought and killed in these underground battles, authors Tom Mangold and John Penycate provide a gripping inside look at this fearsome combat. The Tunnels of Cu Chi is a war classic of unbearable tension and unforgettable heroes.
Customer Reviews:
finally made up my mind.......2007-07-25
I went to Viet Nam last year, and bought this book from a street kid outside the former US Embassy, now a museum, with a decidedly different perspective from the US's. The book was a xeroxed version of the real thing.
The book, in combination with seeing the tunnels themselves (and reading another book "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places"), gave me great insight into the problems we faced there, and how we might actually have come out on top, and why we didn't.
It's a well written, exciting book. It focuses some on the strategies and problems surrounding the tunnels, but mostly on the tunnels themselves, and those that fought the wars in the tunnels.
Seeing the tunnels is surreal. There is an AK47 shooting range nearby where the Vietnamese can relive moments of former glory, and as you visit, you can hear shots ringing out. They are proud of their victory, but in some ways look up to America, or at least want to have certain things America has.
I've heard so many arguments on Viet Nam. We could have won.. we never could have won. Through this book and some other data points, I learned for the first time the military issues involved(not just political science stuff.) I learned how the tunnels were key in launching the Tet offensive, which broke us politically, although according to this book, and the Vets on the trip, not militarily. Our failure to properly understand the people and their use of these tunnels cost us dearly.
A good read.......2007-05-21
This is a very educational book on the Vietnam war - a topic most people have at best a fuzzy understanding of. The American tunnel rats were incredibly brave (and at least a tad crazy), fighting against the clever and dedicated Viet Cong enemy on their own turf - actually, under their turf, in tunnels rigged with booby traps and other dangers. I learned a lot about the war with perspectives from both sides of the conflict.
Into the Real Heart of Darkness :Vietnam's Cu Chi Tunnels.......2007-05-01
This is one of the finest books concerning the Vietnam war history. How could you fight an enemy that could not be seen? Western cartographers neglected the terra incognita tunnels of Cu Chi.I thought how clever the terricolous Vietnamese farm-peasants were to use 'Nature' for their advantage and with 'succes fou'.They used organic and herbal medicines and devices, rather than waiting for the man-made shipments to arrive. For example, the Viet surgeons would distill honey and use this as a antiseptic remedy. The teret tunnel systems stretched for vast miles. The fetid labyrinthine network was filled with pesky bugs and dung-smeared rattan spikes.Only the advanced subterranean diggers knew how to subtefugate and how to avoid sepulcherment from the serpiginous 'Tunnel Rats'.The suffusion of tear gas and flame-throwers were futile to the tenacious Viet Cong.Petrol was becoming a precious resource, that was later diverted more towards vehicular use.If the American soldiers were properly supplied and re-equipped,the victories would be in their favor.Even the goal of achieving some final Pyrrhic victory, was still sliding further down the slippery money pit and out of reach. The ready venturesome 'Tunnel Rats' could no longer play on terra firma, and now had to face the vermiculating serpentine mazes below them. This is one of the great stories about America's swathering attempt to control the natural course of Vietnamese politics.
viet nam vets must-read.......2006-09-30
Vets often wonder what was REALLY going on during their tour of duty. This book gives the pictiure from both sides, written by two British Broadcasting Corporation writers.
This book answered questions I had about what was going on; about who was doing what and how. It shows how the two countries' policies were worked out in the lives of their soldiers.
The authors stick to stories of fighters, American and Vietnamese, and they present them as everyday people fighting through a tough situation in a taxing environment.
As things go in all wars, both sides have reason to be proud of their efforts, and both sides' fighters paid a big price.
If you liked the movie "The Siege of Firebase Gloria", you'll like this book.
Vets, read this book and get a realistic picture of what that young American -YOU- were a part of, 30 or 40 years ago.
You won't forget it, and you'll want to share it with others.

First hand experience with the Cu Chi Tunnels.......2007-09-18
A very well written book about the problems the US Army faced in the tunnels of Cu Chi. I was on Advisory Team 77 at the Trung Lap Ranger Training Center near Cu Chi in 1963. We knew the tunnels were there but not the extent of them. We could not figure out how the VC escaped from us when we encountered them on our patrols. We never ventured down the holes as our job was to train and advise the ARVN.
I enjoyed reading it very much.

Europe in the New Century is a brilliant work. Never have I read a volume that encompasses so many aspects of the EU. It is fascinating how the author has combined such a varied group of voices and prespectives on the future of this supranational organisation. From Christopher Patten to Solange Villes, they are all here voicing their opinion on the future of European integration. The multitude of statistics provide a tangible understanding to the reader of just how powerful the EU is becoming. The format is wonderful, especially in the later sections as we are given insight from the youth of all 15 member states. Europe in the new Century reads like a dream and spares you from the complicated technicalites of academic literature. This is the first book about the EU that lays things out and explains the organisation in simple terms. I greatly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in European affairs. Kudos to Mr. Guttman for assembling such a fine piece of literature.

Book Description
One of the first books to challenge the conventional HIV/AIDS hypothesis. While some of the research behind this book has since been updated, the underlying theme is still valid: the evidence for HIV causation of AIDS is slim if it exists at all.

Groundbreaking work!.......2000-02-28
One of the first books to challenge the conventional HIV/AIDS hypothesis. Some of the research is a bit dated but the underlying theme is still valid: the evidence for HIV causation of AIDs is slim if it exists at all.
More recent books challenging the HIV/AIDS theory such as Rethinking AIDS are more relevant than AIDS and Syphillis but it's still an excellent book.
Shockingly ignorant.......1998-02-16
The data and analysis are outdated and, more importantly, dangerous!
I question the value of having this 11 year old book still in print, when we have made leaps and bounds in the search of the cause and cure of HIV/AIDS since then.
