Understand the history and shortcomings of COSO.......2003-08-15

Great overview of its history, and other frameworks for internal control evaluations. Clearly the author has major misgivings with COSO, and describes why the shortcomings reflect the biases of the authors, which is the public accounting firms. Excellent overview of other frameworks, and why they might be superior. With the passage of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, this understanding might seem more important, but likely many organizations will struggle just to do COSO. An important addition to any research on COSO.

Anyone who read this book when it was first published in 1998 needs to re-read it in the context of the Enron revelations. It is amazing how Steven J. Root's examination and explanation of what internal control is, how it should be implemented and what it can and cannot accomplish is exactly on-point vis-à-vis the break downs in corporate governance at Enron, Global Crossing and others of their ilk. Anyone from business student to congressional overseer, who wants the proper framework for understanding and explaining these crises should carefully study this book.

Beyond COSO is probably one of the best, complete and most recent books on (internal) control. What interested me a great deal was that Root behind the masks of the committee of sponsoring organisations looks, metaphorically speaking. It helped me a great deal on writing a graduation paper on this topic.

Excellent coverage of the history of internal control issues. Good analysis of weaknesses/strengths of COSO and the strengths of other control related models. Good explanation of a broader management approach to internal control that the author advocates. Good suggestions for implementing the broader approach in a company and the roles of the Board, Senior Managment and Internal Audit. The author is obviously quite knowledgeable about these issues and the book is easy to read and is very interesting. People interested in developing their knowledge about this subject or concerned about good business and control practices and ways to enhance the likelihood of success for their company will find this book very valuable.

I read this book five years ago and it still remains my favorite. It's so very extremely precious to me. If you have an open mind to endless possibilities that need no explaination... if you want to read a book that comes from a pure place and travels beyond the norm of the collective imagination... if you LOVE Andy Kaufman for ALL he did and ALL he was in ALL of his myriad dimensions then you MUST read this book! Andy lives on and I feel less alone.

The book is unedited and Andy wasn't known for his literary skill, so it's not exactly polished. There are numerous spelling errors and the prose isn't beautifully composed and the book isn't finished, but the ideas and twists within are amazing.

It starts off a bit confusing, then it seems like a sweet little personal story and then it becomes increasingly more bizarre with every page. The progression seems natural though, so no matter how bizarre it gets, it all seems perfectly logical.

Overview Compilation.......2007-05-31

A compilation of contemporaneous stories about pirates, which was compiled in the early 1800s. It is a very, and I want to stress very, general overview on pirate lives. It sounded to me like a good compilation of stories when I received the book however; it seemed to be information obtained for a child's use. This is not a scholarly type of source in the least and should not be read as such. It is however, a good general overview of the basic biography of major/famous pirates.

I liked this book BECAUSE it tells the story of various pirates in history in their own words. Also the diversity of the featured pirates was interesting. This book takes you into their world, paints you a vivid picture of the places they roamed, their adventures, and their downfalls. I recommend this book to anyone intrigued by pirates.

Semi-Narrative History.......2002-09-18

After you've read a few dozen books on pirates and piracy, you start to notice that they, mostly, repeat the same stuff over and over again. There IS material in here that I have not seen in other books; however, a good portion is rewritten from Captain Charles Johnson's A General History of Pirates.

The book is reprinted from the 1837 version and an entertaining read. It is not generally a children's book. As to the factual nature of the narratives, it's hard to say. Like several of the other pirate books I have reviewed, this one is an important part of balanced view of what piracy is really about. P-)

A Classic on Piracy of all Times, and in the Seven Seas..........2000-11-26

"The Pirates Own Book" is written in old, Nineteenth Century English, which provides the reader with an archaic atmosphere that allows a better undestanding of the characters and their times. Its illustrations are worth mentioning because they are beautiful and imaginative engravings that have been reproduced in some of the most important works on Piracy. The book covers a wide period in History: from the Medieval Norman and Danish Sea Robbers to the cases of piracy in the first half of the Nineteenth Century. Even though, it lacks to mention the ancient Mediterranean Piracy in the times of Alexander and, later on, in the Roman Times. Something really interesting of this book is that it includes narrations of pirates from all five continents, demonstrating that piracy has existed in all the seas since Maritime Commerce was applied. The lives of some of the least known pirates, such as the Chilean Vincent Benavides and the Spanish Benito de Soto are covered in this volume. "The Pirates Own Book" is highly recommendable for all readers interested in piracy, for it is mentioned as first hand source in many works.

A good book...but beware!.......1999-01-05

This is a good read, but you better be ready for the original 18th and 19th century language. It is authentic, and is often more disturbing than romantic (as we've come to expect of pirate books).

Informative, but not a stand-alone volume.......2007-07-16

There is much information here specific to the amazing variety of birds to be seen at the bizarre world of the Salton Sea in Southern California. It is a very detailed volume, listing actual occurrence dates of some of the rarer species, along with specific locations, and times of year to be spotted. The main problem though, is the lack of plates. There are just 71 total plates, all black and white photographs- very poor ones at that. In other words, you need to bring along another guidebook if you are not completely familiar with all 400 plus species that may be found there!

The book does have a nice general background of the area and how it was formed, along with a great section chronicling the biogeography of the land. A few pages are dedicated to the controversies surrounding the ecological management of the area, which has burdened local politics for nearly a century.
