Reclaimed Land: Hong Kong in Transition
David Clarke Manufacturer: Hong Kong University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9622095763 |
Book Description
At midnight on 30 June 1997 Hong Kong ceased to be a British colony and became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Instead of gaining independence, this most capitalist of cities was absorbed within the world's largest communist state. Reclaimed Land offers an analysis in words and images of Hong Kong's colonial transition, focusing not on the much-documented ceremonies which surrounded the handover of sovereignty itself but on the longer term process of transformation of which the events of mid-1997 were but one part.Using images selected from an archive of photographs taken by David Clarke on a daily basis between the end of 1994 and the beginning of 2001, this innovatively conceived book offers a personal and critical perspective on the life of one of the world's most vibrant cities during a time of great change and self-questioining.

Sisters in the Resistance: How Women Fought to Free France, 1940-1945
Margaret Collins Weitz Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471126764 |
Book Description
SISTERS in the RESISTANCE"I was in my early twenties when the Germans invaded our country. To this day, when I read about a rape trial, I am reminded of the Occupation. This was really violation—violation of my country. It was impossible to remain passive." —Lucienne Guezennec
In Sisters in the Resistance, noted scholar and historian Margaret Collins Weitz weaves a remarkable collection of first-person interviews into a unique oral history of the women who fought for the French Resistance. The result is a vivid portrait of defiance and endurance that captures the unsung heroism, quiet courage, and ultimate triumph of the women in "the army of the shadows." Candidly, calmly, and modestly, the women speak—many for the first time—about the driving forces behind their struggle, the ideals that motivated them, and the daily hardships and bitter realities of life in occupied France.
It was a life of unimagined privations in which food, fuel, clothes, and other daily necessities were both scarce and rationed. Newspapers became precious insulation against the cold, and posters appeared on city streets warning the population about the dangers of eating rats. Yet, despite the exigencies of day-to-day existence, the women persevered, serving as couriers, translators, and medics, and they proved indispensable to the creation and distribution of the Resistance's most effective weapon: the underground press.
Sisters in the Resistance also reveals how and why women operatives often had a decided advantage over their male counterparts in clandestine operations.
As the war intensified, the stakes grew higher, the risks greater. Living with the constant danger of discovery, there was no margin of error for the résistantes. Relentlessly pursued by the Gestapo and their collaborators, a slight lapse in judgment could lead to imprisonment, torture . . . or even death.
During her research, Margaret Collins Weitz was given unprecedented access to volumes of previously classified materials and memoirs. As a result, Sisters in the Resistance offers fresh insights into the social and cultural fabric of occupied France, revealing the stifling paternalism and patriotic obsessions that would relegate these women's contributions to the back pages of history for decades. It is a haunting, dramatic, and long overdue addition to the written history of the Second World War.
Advance praise for Margaret Collins Weitz's Sisters in the Resistance
"Women in the French Resistance is a key subject. Margaret Weitz has gathered personal testimonies that are often moving, occasionally funny, and always fascinating. She has set them in an intelligible context that helps us understand how all French people—men and women—experienced the Nazi occupation." —Robert Paxton, Mellon Professor of Social Sciences, Columbia University, and author of Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, 1940 - 1944
"Balancing absorbing narrative and astute analysis, Margaret Collins Weitz has integrated the unsung achievements of women into the history of the French Resistance." —Carole Fink, Professor of History, The Ohio State University, and author of Marc Bloch: A Life in History
"Fifty years after the end of World War II, Sisters in the Resistance renders homage to the courageous women of the French Resistance. It is high time for their contributions to be fully acknowledged, and fortunate indeed that they have found such a sympathetic, scholarly, and lucid chronicler in Margaret Collins Weitz." —Marilyn Yalom, author of Blood Sisters: The French Revolution in Women's Memory
Customer Reviews:
A great compilation of oral histories, but bad conclusions........1999-03-18
For the most part Weitz is willing to let her interviews speak for her, with informative results. Her own analysis and conclusions show feminist leanings, and are far from objective. The concluding chapter digresses into a barrage of stereotypes and gender comparison.
Still, if one ignores the author's own remarks and concentrates on the primary sources, this is a worthwhile book.

The Struggle for Mastery: The Penguin History of Britain 1066-1284
David Carpenter Manufacturer: Penguin (Non-Classics) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0140148248 Release Date: 2005-03-29 |
Book Description
Drawing upon vast amounts of fresh research, David CarpenterÂ's remarkable new book brings to life medieval Britain in the tumultuous period between the Norman conquest of England and the English conquest of Wales under Edward I. This epoch saw a profound reshaping of Britain, as Norman and Anglo-Saxon peoples were molded together into a new identity, and the development of a powerful parliamentary tax-based state enabled England to dominate the rest of Britain at the end of the thirteenth century. Yet as CarpenterÂ's wide-ranging narrative makes clear, during this time England was also linked in an entirely new way to continental Europe, leaving plenty of space for the ambitions of BritainÂ's other rulers, namely the princes of Wales and the king of Scots, to emerge.Customer Reviews:

The Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science
John Dupré Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0674212614 |
Book Description
The great dream of philosophers and scientists for millennia has been to give us a complete account of the order of things. A powerful articulation of such a dream in this century has been found in the idea of a unity of science. With this manifesto, John Dupré systematically attacks the ideal of scientific unity by showing how its underlying assumptions are at odds with the central conclusions of science itself. In its stead, the author gives us a metaphysics much more in keeping with what science tells us about the world. Elegantly written and compellingly argued, this provocative book will be important reading for all philosophers and scholars of science.

European Union Spatial Policy and Planning
D Williams Manufacturer: Sage Publications Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1853963054 |
Book Description
This is a book about the place of spatial policy within an integrated Europe. It takes the perspective 'lâEurope mon pays', rather than a specifically national view. It deals with the institutions, policy instruments and spatial planning, at the scale of Europe as a whole and of that of the European Union, and explains the logic behind them.EU policies and programmes are already a familiar part of the working environment for professional planners and local planning authorities; for example the directive on the environmental assessment of projects, or the need to identify partners in other member states; or to join networks in order to participate in EU programmes; or to develop projects which qualify for ERDF or ESF grants. The Commission is increasingly recognized as part of the structure of government and network of government contacts, in the same way as national government departments.
To operate professionally in this context, to â~think Europeanâ and to understand the implications of this policy context, as well as the continental spatial scale, presents a major challenge to all planners, students and planning educators. This book is written for those who need to know more about this new context. It is the product of the authorâs several yearsâ experience of teaching EU spatial policy and the institutions responsible, to senior undergraduates and postgraduates.
The book is divided into four parts: Part One explains the powers and institutional structure of the EU. Part Two traces the emergence of a Europe-wide spatial policy, and describes the EUâs role in regional, environmental, transport, and urban planning. Part Three deals with the practical aspects of operating professionally in Europe and Part Four reviews the prospects for further policy development in the context of the 1996 IGC.

Spatial Economics and Ecosystems: The Interaction between Economics and the Natural Environment (Advances in Ecological Sciences)
Manufacturer: Computational Mechanics, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1853125636 |
Book Description
A collection of research papers (theory, methodology, applications and experiments), from a broad range of disciplines and countries, on the interaction between "Homo Economicus" and Nature. The study of a complex phenomenon like the interaction between "homo economicus" and Nature requires interdisciplinary research. The usual critical survey which concludes that not enough and sufficiently interdisciplinary research takes place does not go further than producing long essays full of wishes that interdisciplinary research were the rule rather than the exception. In this collection of research articles, we have working on this fascinating topic. We agree that all of us, interested in environmental issues should try to understand our colleagues from other disciplines, but rigorous research can only be undertaken by experts in one (or hopefully, more) fields. Philosophy, psychology, statistics, economics and management (not to mention politics and law) is too large a list of disciplines for anyone of us to be an expert in.
