Thomson's collection of essays on natural science (from "American Scientist") are contemplative, and conversational, cerebral without being difficult, and concerned with ideas, philosophy and language.

Organized in three sections, "The Uses of Diversity," "On Being a Scientist" and "The Future of Evolution," the collection takes a broad perspective.

In the title essay he extrapolates from the pair of loons on his summer lake to the character of a place where loons live, their dwindling numbers and what that could mean to humans, practically and aesthetically. On a drive from Kennedy airport, he muses on our attitude toward land. Two other essays explore the perspectives of earlier scientists.

In the second section he captures the thrill of discovering how sharks swim and dissects the polarizing effect of "reductionism," the practice of ignoring outside influences in scientific disciplines.

Reflections on evolution lead him to explore matters as apparently diverse as the origin of tetrapods and the link between Newton and Darwin.

Excellent work as usual by McManus. Buy two, so when you wear the first one out, or a family member sneaks it out of the house...you'll still have a copy.

'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09

I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.

However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.

By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

McManus Indeed Strikes Again.......2003-02-04

This is the eighth time that Mr. McManus has put together a collection of his humorous experiences from childhood, through his early days as a manipulator of truth at a public relations agency, and of course more recent forays as the intrepid guide and indomitable leader of a variety of outings. This is the fourth collection of his stories that I have read, and I believe that leaves me with 8 to still enjoy. One of the remaining books is done with his sister who is generally known in these books as the, "Troll", and that volume is to have dozens of variations for recipes on, "whatchucalit stew".

It would be unfair to say that there is no familiarity in these stories as I read the 4th collection. There is a great difference between familiarity and repetition, and the author is not guilty of the latter. What is becoming familiar are the friends of his childhood through to the present day with names that would make Dickens proud were he alive and writing in 20th Century Idaho. These characters are based upon real people that he has mercifully disguised, as how many people would want the moniker Rancid Crabtree, with all the attendant implications?

These stories are innocent, honest, and without anything that would keep them on a coffee table for any member of household to read. Even his first kiss in the back of a friend's car, that is a stretch to call a kiss, would be comfortable in a G rated Disney film. His stories may primarily take place in his, "Gothic Idaho", and other states in the West and Pacific Northwest, but they translate to everyone's childhood to some degree, and are pure reading enjoyment, completely without pretense or prevarication.

tasteful, and completely obnoxious. Out of the four books of his that I have read [ The night the bear ate goombaw, they shoot canoes... Fine and pleasant... and this one] This is the funniest one in my opinion. If you liked any of his other books, You gotta like this one. They are all a collection of the same kind of stories, except his latest book. They are all short and simple and run along the same lines. Male stupidity, outdoor troubles, childhood memories of embarassment and goofy adventures. If you grew up in the country especially, you will probably slap your knee after every paragraph. Pat McManus is the Diabolical genius of humorous writing. This guy ruins me for anybody else who writes something with only the intention of being funny. And I don't mind at all. I'm willing to be spoiled by such great writing. Anybody who knows a troop of crazy eccentric characters from their own childhood or right now, will identify with crazy eddie muldoon and Melba Peachbottom. Yeah that's right, Melba.... Peach... Bottom. I'm sure he changes the names with names like that and His friends girlfriend Velveeta.

The best part of his writing is letting him rope you in to actually believing a conversation or interaction and then realizing that you just even if only for a second bought into the most ridiculous thing, and he knew you would all along. Feeling stupid and flat out tricked is the funniest part of reading these books. Some of the people and thoughts, couldn't even be made up by THIS guy, so you have to believe some of it. And once you believe some of it, he's got you set up right where he wants you, IT'S GREAT. If you appreciate good humor and take things all in fun, or need a laugh after a horrifying camping trip, you should definetely buy this book or any other Pat book. You can just expect the same hilarious thing with most of the other ones, because they're all short funny stories. My cheeks hurt from smiling and my ''Funnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!'' muscle hurts from laughing. Get it.

Warning!!! This book could cause divorce!! I was reading in bed with my wife trying to sleap and while holding in the laughter the bed was shaking so hard the neighbors gave me a wink and told my wife she looked like she needed rest..... If you enjoy/endure the outdoors you can relate to this book and will not be able to put it down.

I would say that this book is very good. I would like to point out to some of the other reviewers that Delta Force is not a separate Special Force but rather a detachment of the First Special Forces Group. Hence the name First Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta. This is probably why the unit did not get it's own chapter in the book.

I disagree with a previous post claiming this book is a classic. It is not, but that doesn't make it a bad book either. To the contrary, I found this book provided good info on the various special operations forces it covered. I too was disappointed though to find Delta was not covered in this book. And the fact that the Pentagon still doesn't acknowledge them is a joke, everyone knows they exist, and there's plenty of pictures available of them and their gear so thats no excuse to exclude them. The author's portayal of those branches covered however was very good, making this book a mixed bag rating-wise.

I agree that is an informative book, and I also agree that it has the best photographs of any book on this subject. However, the photos are where I was a bit disappointed. I received the book in the mail and as soon as I saw the cover my heart sank. Having been in the military, the first thing that I noticed was the blank adapters on the weapons of the troops. Now, maybe I was deluding myself, but I was not prepaired for that. After going through the book, it seemed that all of the photos were of various stages of training in the special ops schools. Eventually, this bothered me less because, thinking realistically, how would they get photos of actuall missions and if they did, we would definitely never see them.

Overall, I recommend this book. The content is decent and the picutres are brilliant, I just had to prepare readers as picky as I am.

Great Book About America's Special Forces.......2003-06-14

I've read this book recently and I think that it's a great book detailing the history, training, missions and weapons of America's special forces.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to know about the special forces and what they're all about.

To Lucky13, the info is straight from a textbook? What textbook on special forces do you know of? This book IS the textbook. As for your claim of several missing units, the only one missing is delta.
Delta is a very secretive unit, no photos of their operators are allowed, and the unit itself is not publicly acknowleged by the DOD. If you want a book about delta, check out "Weapons of Delta Force" by Fred Pushies. It's got about all the info that there is about the unit. It also has photos of the equipment and gear that delta uses(being used in the photos by SF, Rangers, and SEALs).
"America's Special Forces" is by far the best book available on the subject of US Special Operations units. A true classic.

General rules and measures from 1970 onwards have resulted in a distinct improvement of surface water quality (mainly related to oxygen conditions), after a long period of severe water pollution in The Netherlands. However, because of intensification of uses of our environment, with often contradicting interests, severe environmental problems became more visible, such as eutrophication, acidification, desiccation, fragmentation, and recently also effects of climate change. Restoration and rehabilitation measures started around 1990 in the province of Friesland, related to functions of water systems. A limited number of projects in nature reserves have been realised, triggered by governmental subsidies and from the principle, first come, first served. However, nowadays a more well-considered setting of priorities is needed. In this paper, two examples will be presented of methods used by setting priorities (in time) between areas, and three examples by making choices between measures within a limited area. One of these pilots is a cost-effectiveness study, showing an approach needed according to the EU Water Framework Directive. Some specifically developed, decision support systems (DSS) are presented, while the cost-effectiveness system uses (inter)national developed frames. It is concluded that there is neither a clear policy in using DSS in regional water management, nor a set of standardised instruments for preparing weighted decisions for wetland restoration. Research and development of simple, easily applicable DSS for regional water management is urgently needed.

Riparian zones are known to function as buffers, reducing non-point source pollution from agricultural land to streams. In the Netherlands, riparian zones are subject to high nitrogen inputs. We combined hydrological, chemical and soil profile data with groundwater modelling to evaluate whether chronically N loaded riparian zones were still mitigating diffuse nitrate fluxes. Hydraulic parameters and water quality were monitored over 2years in 50piezometres in a forested and grassland riparian zone. Average nitrate loadings were high in the forested zone with 87g NO"3^--N m^-^2 y^-^1 and significantly lower in the grassland zone with 15g NO"3^--N m^-^2 y^-^1. Groundwater from a second aquifer diluted the nitrate loaded agricultural runoff. Biological N removal however occurred in both riparian zones, the grassland zone removed about 63% of the incoming nitrate load, whereas in the forested zone clear symptoms of saturation were visible and only 38% of the nitrate load was removed.
