Book Description
The challenges and opportunities offered to British farming by the profound changes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries make these years of outstanding interest to the agricultural historian. These original essays are presented to Gordon Mingay, the most distinguished historian of the Agricultural Revolution, and reflect his own interests in three central themes; landownership and landed society; rural labour; and agriculture both as a business and as a way of life.
Book Description

Book Description
For nearly four decades the fictional spaceships of the "Star Trek" universe have been powered by antimatter. But antimatter is not science fiction, and neither is the idea of using it for space propulsion. In Mirror Matter: Pioneering Antimatter Physics, renowned physicist Dr. Robert L. Forward and science writer Joel Davis show why, and how.
Mirror Matter is the answer to the skeptics who say that using antimatter is too risky, too difficult, or too expensive. Forward and Davis describe how to make, capture, store, and use antimatter. Mirror Matter explains, step-by-step, how to greatly improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of antimatter production; how antimatter can be captured and safely stored until it is used; and how it can improve the propulsion capability of interplanetary rocket engines by one to two orders of magnitude.
If the solar system is to one day be our big backyard, it will come about using "mirror matter" for space propulsion.
Customer Reviews:
Matter Versus Anti-Matter.......2007-08-03
An intriguing concept that authors Forward and Davis have written in terms that a lay person can understand. Star Trek captured the imagination of millions of viewers and now they can find out what made
Star Trek tick with space propulsion. I highly recommend this book. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.

This is a great book and has changed my life you should try it.

Book Description
Nick Fashon is having a bad day. He's just found out his estranged grandfather has died mysteriously in the Arizona desert. Then he meets his potential father-in-law, who turns out to be an ex-cop with a screw loose and a penchant for bean dip. To top it off, he returns home to find his successful clothing shop has just burned to the ground and taken his upstairs apartment with it.
Love & Fashion was Nick Fashon and Vince Love's thriving clothing store until it went up in flames -- the work of an arsonist, police say. Suddenly Nick is homeless and disillusioned, and both the insurance investigators and the police want a word with him. Where can he turn for help? He's wearing out his welcome with his archaeologist girlfriend, Gretchen, who's developing her own suspicions about him. His business partner and best friend, Vince, isn't much help either, as Nick discovers more and more disturbing clues that point to Vince as the one who set the blaze.
Things begin to look up when Nick finds out his eccentric late grandfather has left him an unusual inheritance: a thriving pet-coffin business and a barn full of peculiar inventions, including one particularly interesting doohickey called the HandyMate. The HandyMate is the ultimate kitchen gadget -- a simple tool that can cut, core, chop, slice, and potentially transform the domestic world. Full of entrepreneurial zeal, Nick is determined to see one in every kitchen drawer in America.
But Nick isn't the only one planning to strike it rich with the HandyMate. Yola Fuentes, Nick's grandfather's irresistibly sexy business partner, is so determined to get the HandyMate that she makes Nick an offer he can't refuse. And Robo Fuentes, her jealous ex-husband, has a bullet with Nick's name on it if he takes her up on that offer. Nick quickly finds himself caught in a situation where a twisted thing of plastic might end up costing him his girlfriend, his self-respect -- and his life.
With the help of a cast of colorful characters, master storyteller Pete Hautman delivers a stylish and funny mystery with more twists and turns than the HandyMate itself.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging, funny, light-hearted, good local color.......2003-04-26
Nick Fashon, the young, handsome and charmingly vain co-owner of a clothing store called Love & Fashion, with his partner, Vince Love, finds himself sole heir to the estate of his barely-known grandfather, a desert rat whose invention, the doohickey of the title, may possibly be a money-maker. This drives a plot with wacky, funny, wise-cracking characters like an ambitious Latina TV cooking show hostess, an archaeologist girl-friend, a hick lawyer who is a wannabe dude, all in a mildly twisted mystery plot.
There is an awful lot of talk about mouth-watering food in the book and you'll find yourself inexplicably hungry throughout, hankering for menudo or huevos rancheros washed down with margaritas grandes. And you'll enjoy the well-described Tucson scene.
Not in the same league as mysterydom's big-hitters, but worth an evening's read nonetheless.
Scott Morrison
A Gaggle of Zany Characters.......2002-12-24
Pete Hautman is able to create distinctive, often loony, characters who drive an engaging plot that wraps up all of the loose ends by its conclusion. Nicholas Fashon, around which the plot revolves, has inherited the rights to his grandfather's all-purpose kitchen gadget the Handy Mate (one of many doohickey inventions the old man fiddled around with). Getting the Handy Mate manufactured and marketed is Fashon's goal to make it big, but there are many roadblocks in his way, including a violent loanshark, a sexy female chef, and the police who suspect Fashon of torching his apparel store for insurance money. The book's humor is derived from twists in the plot and nonsensical situations between Fashon and a number of secondary characters, in a similar vein to earlier Hautman books. It is highly enjoyable, and good for a laugh or two every few pages.
A Very Entertaining Read.......2002-12-03
Pete Hautman has a real knack for creating off-the-wall characters and great plots. Nick Fashon must deal sexy gals, a shady lawyer (of course!), a barrio thug, and friends who desert him in his time of need. The twists and turns of this novel will keep you reading (and chuckling) with every page. It has a similar comedic punch as Hautman's other fun read, Mrs. Million. Highly recommended!
what is a doohickey?.......2002-10-18
A doohickey is something hard to describe.
This book isn't bad, and it isn't great. This book isn't really a crime story. It isn't really a serious book. It isn't particularly funny. It doesn't really have a strong or surprising ending.
This book is a doohickey.
fun crime comedy.......2002-10-07
After years of having no financial security at all, Nick Fashon believes he's about to have it all. He and his friend Vince own a fashion store, Love & Fashion, a place that is very popular. Nick is seeing Gretchen, a beautiful offbeat woman he thinks he's in love with and she with him.
All Nick's dreams go up in smoke when the store is gutted by fire. Nick was living in the apartment above the store and lost everything because he didn't have renter's insurance. The store's insurance won't pay up until they're assured arson wasn't the cause of the fire. Nick becomes obsessed with producing, marketing and selling his late grandfather's kitchen gadget, the handy mate as a way of bringing in income to the point he might lose everything he holds dear including his life.
Pete Hauteman has carved out a very unique niche with this crime comedy. The author doesn't take himself to seriously so he allows his readers to have a good time while reading about characters that are funny because they get themselves into such ridiculous predicaments a la Abbot and Costello movie. DOOHICKEY is the perfect title for this special book.

Customer Reviews:
The book now reissued - retitled, and is it the same?.......2005-02-16
The new and warranted reinterest in World War II, and D-Day specifically has given this book new life. What I am wondering is whether or not the content has been changed, Not an easy read back in 1975 when Anthony Cave Brown first slogged through the newly declassified material which help to make this book fascinating, I am tempted to wager that some things have been re-written. Only a guess of course. This could also be a good thing, as in the case of Pearl Harbor, where after 1995 declassification documents were used to prove ("Day Of Deceit by Mr. Stinnett) that the attack was not, in fact, a complete suprise. Seeing that the original was out-of-print I suppose that this is a welcome development to have a new edition, retitled or no. 30 years is a good long time - and perhaps more information is included while staying true to the "old" edition.
Truth, in this case, is more than stranger than fiction.......2003-09-03
"Bodyguard Of Lies" is one of the most compelling and important reads out there. Lovers of Clancy novels should put them away for a year and concentrate on some of the most real bizarre, yet important, machinations of espionage and counter-espionage ever created and implemented. What gives this phenomenal work its incredible allure is the knowledge that these creations of historical intelligence import occored only a little more than a half-decade ago. The book takes its title from Winston Churchill's remark regarding the crucial role of good intelligence, where he stated, "In war-time, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." Using for his research information that had only been de-classified the previous year (1975), Anthony Cave Brown takes us through the minefield that was "Ultra", the Allies means of reading the secret ciphers of the Third Reich. "Ultra" was of such devastating importance that the entire city of Coventry was sacrificed in order to keep secret the fact that the Allies had, early on in the war, broken the German "Enigma" ciphers. This top secret cipher would time and time again put vital information directly into the hands of the Allies. It is safe to say that "Ultra" may have been the difference between victory and defeat. Brown also details what can only be referred to as the most convoluted espionage and counter-espionage schemes that only the minds of men at war for the highest stakes ever perceived could conceive of. In one instance, a false 'cadaver' was planted in an apparant shipwreck, replete with false identity papers, false obituary, false love letters, fake funeral, and, more importantly, false maps and information intended to persuade the enemy that they had stumbled upon ACTUAL information, and act accordingly. Brown relates other tales - some quite unsavory on both sides - for instance, Allied baiting of French resistance in order to convince the enemy of the plausibility of invasion (or non-invasion, as the case warrented) at a given place or time. Agents were sometimes dropped into situations where their 'handlers' knew that cover had been blown or compromised...all done to keep a certain game afloat or a certain secret intact. Perhaps the most interesting revelations, for me, in the book came from the 'dangling' of certain German Generals and Intelligence officials who were not simply sympathetic to the Allies, but in many cases actually working against Hitler and taking incredible, traitorous risks to help defeat him (the Schwarze Kapelle, or, in English, the Black Orchestra). Abwehr head Wilhelm Canaris is studied in depth, and his behavior, not to mention his persona alone may be one of the deepest level secrets of the Second World War. Churchill is again quoted at the start of the section on 'Special Means', "In the high ranges of Secret Service work the actual facts in many cases were in every respect equal to the most fantastic inventions of romance and melodrama. Tangle within tangle, plot and counter-plot, ruse and treachery, cross and double-cross, true agent, false agent, double agent...were interwoven in many a texture so intricate as to be incredible and yet true. The Chief and the High Officers of the Secret Service revelled in these subterranean labyrinths, and pursued their task with cold and silent passion." This book will leave you relieved that men like Churchill, Sir Stewart Menzies, Alan Turing and the like were on the side of the Allies. The book may also leave some disturbed concerning what deep levels of intregue - double, triple, even quadruple-cross - can be invoked when men, and women, are convinced that they are fighting on the side of right against what they are sure is the side of wrong.
Incredible, but true.......2003-06-27
An accumulation of some of the most stimulating and exhaustively-researched details on the intel and counter-intel during WWII, particualrly surrounding D-Day. Truly amazing events chronicled extremely well; even after these many years since the book was first published, Cove-Brown's work stands out.
The book on intelligence operations during World War II.......2002-09-26
This is an extremely detailed book on Allied (mainly British) deception operations during World War II. While it was written in 1976 it still hold up well, though some new information on the role of GCHQ and signals intelligence has been released since 1976. I am still amazed at the scope of operations the British ran during World War II. A very well written book, though it is by know means a quick read. It took me almost a month to get through it. If you are keenly interested in intelligence operations try to track down this book.
Bodyguard of Lies.......2002-09-17
One of the most fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of how the fate of World War II hung in the balance which was tipped ultimately by seemingly inconsequential actions. A real page turner of little known facts..................................the reader will have a hard time setting it down

Book Description
How were the notoriously violent Pukhtun converted to an ethic of nonviolence? The Pukhtun (Pathan) of the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan are regarded as a warrior people. Yet in the years between the world wars there arose a Muslim movement, the Khudai Khidmatgar (Servants of God) that was inspired by Gandhian principles of nonviolent action and dedicated to Indian nationalism rather than communal separatism. This book is the first account of rank-and-file members of the Khudai Khidmatgar, describing why they joined, what they did, and how they perceived the ethics and aims of the movement.
Book Description
This is the foremost work on the social and political history of the Pathans, from 550 BC to AD 1957. It includes an epilogue written, just before the author's death, in the light of recent events in Afghanistan.
Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2004-08-15
This is a good read notwithstanding the sometimes academic treatment of the topic which at best is boring and long winded. Having said as much, the author does a pretty through job of addressing the various aspects of Pathan history which departs quite significantly from the common understanding of the average Pathan of himself and his heritage.
I for one was quite amazed to see the argument posed by the author and the facts laid therein to substantiate his proposition. However, by and large it is a book worth reading given the subject of Pathan history is something that can not be fully understood from a single read.
Great book on the charcter of the Afghans/Pakhtoon.......2002-04-14
If you are not a Sindi, Punjabi, Hazara, Tajik or other enemies of the Afghans/Pakhtoon, this is a must reading for you.
Very valuable but somewhat misleading.......2000-08-18
This book is an extremely useful work for historical reference, perhaps the only one in its category extant. It can be called a magnum opus. The narrative of its writer is, of course, tinted heavily with his own emotion--and he has pointed this out to the reader himself when describing the nature of his book--therefore this aspect of the book may also be taken as a "historical reference", to its VIP author's attitudes, but otherwise has no value and is sincere, but very harmfully misleading to the unacquainted reader, about the true nature of the evil Pathan society and its ways, in the present time especially. The Pathans/Pakhtuns/Afghans were always a backward, turbulent society with a criminal culture, but they have changed drastically for the worse in the 44 years since this book was first written, mostly in the last 20 years or so.
Get to know the Afghans (Pathans) of the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan........2000-06-22
This is one of the most comprehensive books on the subject of the Pathans (Pukhtoon or Pushtoon. Written by the last British Governor of the North West Frontier Province, this book traces the geneaology of this unusual race. Recently the Readers Digest (July 2000) wrote a story on the connection with Alexander the Great. This is a scholary work so if you are looking for light reading this is not for you. At one time Afghan and Pathan or Pukhtoon/Pushtoon were synonymous. It was the fear of the Pathans of Pakistan joining with the Pathans of Afghanistan that led Pakistan to deny naming the province "Pashtunistan" (Land of the Pashtuns)for fear of lending legitimacy to their desire for independence. Winston Churchill fought here. So did Sherlock Holmes' friend Dr. Watson. The general fascination with this area can be gauged by the number of National Geographic articles about it. This book brings these people to life and gives them the honorable treatment they have earned. I should know, I am a Pukhtoon of the Yousafzai (Joseph's Children) tribe.

Book Description
The largest tribal society remaining in the world lives along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, in the area surrounding the Khyber Pass. The guiding force for its twelve million members is 'Pukhtunwali', The Way of the Pathans. The principal tribes and their characteristics, their austere and beautiful land, their turbulent history, and daily lives are presented concisely and systematically; as are the fiery sweetness of Pathan poetry, the murky violence of tribal feuds over zar, zan, and zamin, (gold, women, and land), and the perennial intrigue among the tribes and the Great Powers which has continued since Kipling first wrote of The Great Game.
Customer Reviews:
The Pathans are also known as Pashtun, Afghan & Pukhtun!.......2003-05-09
Highly readable. Insightful.
The reference to Rudyard Kiplings "Ballad of the East and West" is appropriate, because most people know the phrase "East is East and West is West...." but hardly anyone knows that this is just one line from this ballad about the gallantry of the Pashtun.
The book title refers to "Pukhtunwali", the way of the Pathans, and from the point of view of this Pashtun, the author treats the subject with exceptional empathy and understanding. For lay readers I would also suggest "The Pathans" by Olaf Caroe, who deals with the subject with greater inside information, having been the last British Governor of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP).
The Pashtuns live in two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. World events and super power interests have prevented them from uniting. These same people played a MAJOR role in the demise of the Soviet Union.
The US supplied them Stinger missiles, the Pashtun gave up their lives. The combination brought the USSR to its economic knees. But like Kiplings' Ballad, few know about this "fateful pebble".
Highly recommended.
Superb Read.......1999-08-13
The represented view of the author displays a patwah usually reserved for Latif Khan. Consequently, this is a superb peice and a great insight to many kimbo nam, humana humana.
Customer Reviews:
a timeless work.......2002-11-11
Fredrik Barth's Political Leadership Among Swat Pathans is one of the most beautiful ethnographies I have ever read. He presents a unique and interesting case about the ways in which 'khans' of the Pakhtun lineage play(ed) their roles as the leaders in the Swat valley (now in Pakistan). Barth carefully examins the relationships between the leaders and their subjects who jointly participate in the defence of their resources (the land). The book also gives us a vivid picuture of the adaptive strategies followed by Pathans, which are embedded with their kinship stuructures and occupational divisions.
Unlike the prevalent anthropological tradition of the time, Barth has emphasized the consequences of individual decisions for the larger social structure of the Usufzai Pathans. He touches every aspect of the Pathan society -from family structure to the social history -while explaining the contexts in which power is excercised by the 'khans'through both coercion and consensus.
Barth has focused more on description which eliminates possible humor one would expect on such kind of writing. The description of so many interesting events and incidents are sometimes bogged down by too much 'information'. On the whole, the book is a landmark in the history of social anthropology, and deserves the minds and shelves of those who are interested in the discipline of anthropology and/or political science.

Book Description
Introduced more than a decade ago, the first edition of D.V. Bugg's Electronics: Circuits, Amplifiers and Gates became widely popular for its comprehensive yet concise coverage of all the major introductory topics in electronics. Today, semiconductor chips and integrated circuits are used universally. This second edition was revised and streamlined to focus on the basic principles required to apply this extensive technology. Electronics: Circuits, Amplifiers and Gates, Second Edition offers a complete introduction to the fundamentals of AC and DC circuits along with complex numbers, bandwidth, and operational amplifiers. It includes a description of the working principles of transistors, outlining doping and the operation of the diode, bipolar transistor, and field effect transistor. The book also features a section on digital logic and concludes with more advanced chapters describing resonance and transients and their relation through Fourier analysis. Updated to reflect advances in the field over the past decade, Electronics: Circuits, Amplifiers and Gates, Second Edition is fully illustrated throughout with numerous worked examples and sample problems.
