    Book Description

Century 21 Accounting Celebrates 95 Years of Excellence! South-Western's 95 years of accounting leadership is the culmination of generations of commitment to teacher and student needs. Why do thousands of teachers choose Century 21 Accounting each year?

Content The fundamental accounting content you've come to trust from South-Western remains in the Seventh Edition.

Illustration Placement Students often use the illustrations as the starting point for understanding accounting. To meet this need, our illustrations are consistently placed at the top of the page and include step-by-step instructions. The supporting text reinforces concepts presented in the illustrations for complete accounting instruction. South-Western is the only publisher that covers all three concepts of the accounting cycle. The Multicolumn Journal Approach starts with the traditional multicolumn journal through Cycle One and Two and moves into special journals in Cycle Three.

Individual Lessons Each chapter is divided into three or four lessons with corresponding assessment activities right at the point of use. These focused lessons improve student comprehension by providing immediate reinforcement of accounting concepts.

Automated Accounting in Every Chapter Computerized accounting is a reality in the workplace, and we've responded by moving Automated Accounting sections into every chapter. Students can immediately see the connection between accounting concepts and their automated applications.

Many Short Problems In addition to the new end-of-lesson problems, we have introduced several short application problems at the end of each chapter. Students have the opportunity to build their knowledge one step at a time before completing the longer mastery and challenge problems. Century 21 Accounting Multicolumn Journal Approach starts with the traditional multicolumn journal, then moves students into special journals in Cycle Three.

      Book Description

The 1980s have witnessed the mass migration of developing countries and the erstwhile socialist nations to market-based economic systems. The reality is that limited finance has been a formidable barrier to these countries' growth and development. Moreover, they need to rely on their internal sources as external funds are not easily forthcoming. This book identifies four sources of internal finance--tax policies, capital markets, specialized financial institutions (such as development banks), and privatization of the public sector. It examines the conceptual foundations, operating and theoretical issues, as well as strategic considerations relating to these sources. In Part I, Kumar surveys and synthesizes theories of economic development and growth. He concludes by pointing out that these theories have ignored the importance of financial factors, i.e. markets and institutions. Part II, which relates to the internal sources of development finance, begins by examining tax policies. The author surveys the conceptual foundations of financial intermediation and then examines the role of capital markets and specialized financial institutions. Finally, the privatization of the public sector is seen as a special case of intermediation. The book clearly identifies the interrelationships among the internal sources of finance. Efficient financial intermediation is seen as the key to the growth and development of these nations. Ideal as a required text in courses in development finance and economics, this book is an important resource for consultants, professionals in the field of development, and government officials.

          Book Description

Today's Europe is marked by an amazing pace of integration and major changes have taken place within a short period of the time. The European Union now consists of twenty-five member states, however, there is confusion and disagreement about the future design.

The European Union Polity investigates how the European Union should develop and organize itself and offers a reflexive approach to integration based on the theory of communicative action. The book conceives of the EU as a law based on supranational polity lacking the identity of a people as well as the coercive means of a state and argues that it is a polity with an organized capacity to act, but no sole apex of authority. Making an important contribution to the theoretical discussions on the EU, the contributors explore a range of issues including legitimacy, post-natural democracy and integration and provide in-depth analysis of social and tax foreign policy, identity formation, the reform process and the constitutional effects of enlargement.

This book will appeal to political scientists and particularly to students and researchers of European politics.

            Book Description

Law and Reflexive Politics argues against the dominant recent `republican' trend in legal and democratic theory that sees law as the prime vessel of political action, means of empowerment of civil society and guarantor of democratic politics. Against theorists as diverse as Dworkin, Habermas, Unger, Ackerman and others it argues that the law cannot, as these theorists would have it, contain the politics of civil society and exhaust what these politics are about. The first part of the book explores the recent trends in legal and political theory that suggest the internal linking of democracy and law. The second part is a critique of these positions through an application of systems theory, but one that offers an internal critique of systems theory itself as well as a study of the inter-relationships between law, politics and conflict. The final part advances a suggestion for a definition, or re-conceptualisation, of the political as `reflexive', that will re-politicise law's rendering of conflict, political action and identity. What is `stilled' by the law here becomes contested terrain again and, as such, political.

                Book Description

Biotechnology offers great potential to contribute to sustainable agricultural growth, food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries. Yet there are economic and institutional constraints at national and international levels that inhibit the poor people's access to appropriate biotechnological innovations. Agricultural Biotechnology in Developing Countries: Towards Optimizing the Benefits for the Poor addresses the major constraints. Twenty-three chapters, written by a wide range of scholars and stake-holders, provide an up-to-date analysis of agricultural biotechnology developments in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Besides the expected economic and social impacts, the challenges for an adjustment of the international research structure are discussed, with a special focus on intellectual property rights and the roles of the main research organizations. Harnessing the comparative advantages of the public and private sectors through innovative partnerships is the only way forward to optimize the benefits of biotechnology for the poor. The book will be an invaluable resource for both academics and policy-makers concerned with agricultural biotechnology in context of developing-countries.

                    Book Description

In this book, H. S. Green, a former student of Max Born and well known as an author in physics and in philosophy of science, presents an individual and modern approach to theoretical physics and related fundamental problems. Starting from first principles, the links between physics and information science are unveiled step by step: modern information theory and the classical theory of the Turing machine are combined to create a new interpretation of quantum computability, which is then applied to field theory, gravitation and submicroscopic measurement theory and culminates in a detailed examination of the role of the conscious observer in physical measurements. The result is a highly readable book that unifies a wide range of scientific knowledge and is essential reading for all scientists and philosophers of science interested in the interpretation and the implications of the interaction between information science and basic physical theories.

                    5 out of 5 stars A deeper understanding!.......2003-08-12

It started with Alan Turing and John von Neumann: Classical computation follows the model of A. Turing,-- strings of bits, i.e., 0s and 1s; a mathematical model, now called the Turing mashine. Why not two-level quantum systems? The thought was long in coming: From Bohr and Heisenberg to Feynman! The bright idea finally arrived, and with vengeance. An model for computation based on two-level quantum systems was suggested in the 1980ties by R.P. Feynman and D. Deutsch. Then another wait: It wasn't until Peter Shor's qubit-factoring algorithm in the mid 1990ties that the subject really took off, and really caught the attention of the math community. The 'unbreakable' codes might be breakable afterall! The fact that Shor found
a polynomial factoring algorithm naturally shook up the encryption community as well; and for obvious reasons. New elements of thinking in the quantum realm, and not part
of the classical frame of mind, include the basics of quantum theory: superposition of (quantum) states, uncertainty, and
(quantum) coherence. Although these concepts are at the foundation of quantum theory, they make a drastic change in the whole theoretical framework for computation: Now when one passes from the classical notion of bit-registers to
that of qubit-registers, the laws of quantum mechanics take over; and exclude the traditional cloning principle of error correction. Something different must take its place: A new theory! Mathematical physicist and computer scientists must revisit Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg, Pauli, and Dirac. In passing from logic gates to quantum gates(unitary matrices), the
concept of switching-networks from computer science changes drastically. It introduces new challenges, and new truely exciting opportunities. It is not easy for authors who break with tradition to make everyone happy;-- this is especially so in a new field,--one which has grabbed headlines, and one which
is at the same time interdisiplinary. -- This intriguing book covers several of the appropriate areas of physics (quantum theory, (some) experiment...), of artificial intelligence, of philosophy, of computer science (the mathematical physics side of the subject), and of math (operators in Hilbert space, and the theory of algorithms). In my opinion, the author did a great job. The level of the book is suitable for grad students in math, in CS, and in physics: It could perhaps have used some more worked examples and exercises. (Fortunately they can be found in other books on quantum computation, such as the Nielsen-Chuang book.) This book is timeless,-- and I expect it will also be popular ten years from now.

But introvert Valerie Longstreet's pretend vamp -- aka Miss Scarlet -- doesn't seem to be having much success luring the local hottie P.I., Jack Harrison. Even dangling the temptation of cross-promotion between her mystery theater and his investigation business isn't having the desired effect.

Only when she becomes embroiled in a real whodunit does his interest pique. Even then, Jack insists on looking behind the diva to the nice-girl Val. That will never do.

Trouble is, will Miss Scarlet be able to keep up the mystery -- when it's Val who wants to play under the covers?

Eight years as a Chicago cop and now a private investigator have not prepared Jack Harrison to deal with Valerie Longstreet, owner of a mystery theater. While she vamps him in an effort to form a partnership where she would pay him among other incentives to serve as a consultant to her guests, he hides his attraction to her behind a scowl and refuses her tantalizing offer. When he receives a note announcing her murder, he rushes across the street, sees her on the floor, and panics as he thinks she is dead. When he realizes she is performing, Jack angrily accuses her of crossing the line. Valerie reminds him that she has been in his face with different offerings so why would she use the not so subtle writing histrionics.

Jack admits to himself he likes the outrageous Miss Scarlet as she calls herself and the even kookier Aunt Lillian who insists they have three ghosts residing in the theater including a kleptomaniac spirit. When Val becomes involved in a real case, Jack gets involved in more than just the case as he tries to keep her safe, but his fee is that Miss Scarlet is his alone as he loves Val.

SEEKING MISS SCARLET is an amusing private investigative romance with a touch of the paranormal that will keep the audience laughing yet has a serious mystery to liven the plot. The story line is character driven especially when Val vamps her neighbor, which she does all the time as she knows Jack desires her. Her aunt and the ghosts along with the who-done-it add depth to a fine funny tale.

I think this was a fascinating book related to the mysterious Montauk experiments.

Some people question the story of secret government paranormal experiments using children but I have heard about such things in other sources including but not limited to America's Keenest City by Mongo.

It makes me wonder if there is any truth to it? I sure don't put it past the government with all the things they have been up to.

They do seem to have common elements.

                        One gets breathless reading, for what could well be, a well-written science fiction story: an episode of THE OUTER LIMITS; One then wonders-chicken or egg? Did these events inspire fiction as they leaked out, or did the TV show inspire the author. Written in such a matter-of-fact style, that one is easily sucked into the proceedings... Totally fraudulant fiction, or secret research on the edge of forever...? Next to the PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT, the MONTAUK PROJECT is fast becoming as well known, and even if partly true, is bone chilling;

                            Book Description

This book looks at the role of Methodism in the Revolutionary and early national South. When the Methodists first arrived in the South, Lyerly argues, they were critics of the social order. By advocating values traditionally deemed "feminine," treating white women and African Americans with considerable equality, and preaching against wealth and slavery, Methodism challenged Southern secular mores. For this reason, Methodism evoked sustained opposition, especially from elite white men. Lyerly analyzes the public denunciations, domestic assaults on Methodist women and children, and mob violence against black Methodists. These attacks, Lyerly argues, served to bind Methodists more closely to one another; they were sustained by the belief that suffering was salutary and that persecution was a mark of true faith.

                                      Book Description

Famines, droughts, and the depletion of natural resources--all are serious environmental issues facing Somalia and other nations on the horn of Africa. To date, governments and international agencies have been largely ineffective in dealing with these problems. In this important volume, a stellar cast of contributors offers a fresh look at these issues and provides new approaches to solving them. Topics explored include food security, fresh water sources, soil erosion, locust invasions, animal diseases and pastoralism, as well as related infrastructural, financial, and political problems. Traditional ways of cooperating over environmental problems are examined, and development and security aspects are related to famine and political postures.
