Book Description
Since the 19th Century, there has been an accepted distinction between financial systems that separate commercial and investment banking and those that do not. This comprehensive collection aims to establish how and why financial systems develop, and how knowledge of financial differentiation in the 19th Century may afford insight into the development of contemporary banking structure.
This book poses a systematic challenge to Alexander Gerschenkron's 1950s thesis on universal banks. With contributions from leading scholars such as Ranald Michie and Jaime Reis, this well written book provides solid and intriguing arguments throughout.

Book Description
This fifth volume in the Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Geography series describes in detail the way farming of both food and non-food crops is practiced throughout the world today, whether by peasant farmers or sharecroppers, state-run collective farms, or multinational agribusinesses. It
explores how technology can be applied to increase crop production, from the development of the plough in the earliest times to the latest genetically engineered seed strains, and explains why the immense gulf exists between the developing world, which lives with famine and malnutrition, and the
developed world, with its surplus supplies. The influence of natural factors such as climate, and of human ones such as government policy and market conditions, in determining what is grown where, are considered. A 32-page introductory section reviews current methods, achievements, and problems of
agriculture on a global level. Included are discussions of the origins and history of agriculture; the producers; consumers; and challenges for the future. Following are regional sections that examine the prevailing farming systems and crops, special problems, and innovations. Special features
take a closer look at a particular crop or aspect of farming in each region, for example, forestry and the logging industry in Canada; feedlot beef production in the United States; slash and burn agriculture in South America; private plots in the USSR; aquaculture in China; and small island
agriculture in Australia.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Textbook.......2007-03-25
Physical Geology: Earth Revealed, by Diane Carlson, is a very informative and complete geology textbook. The book is full of excellent photos that really bring the subject matter to the forefront. One of the books true hi-lights are the various "Reading Boxes" included with each chapter. These reading boxes take more in-depth looks at the various topics in the books. The textbook is well-written and somewhat enjoyable. It is organized in a very easy to follow manner.
A Wonderful Text.......2005-11-12
I used this text for my Geology 101 class. The testing your knowledge and the terms for each chapter help even the geologically challenged understand the material. The text is beautifully illustrated and will be the first college text I won't sell immediately after the semester ends.
Do not buy from this seller.......2005-09-27
It took me over 2 weeks to receive my purchase. I got an email 1 week and 1/2 after I purchased the item saying they had lost my mailing address. I didn't have my book for one of my test for college and received a poor grade do to it. I would recommend buying from this seller.

Book Description
Boro Harkless has devoted his life to the service of the Archonite Bureau of Security, the force tasked with keeping the peace among and within the city-states of Old Earth. He comes to the city of Sherit seeking the criminal, Luff Imbry. Luff Imbry has devoted his young life to the enjoyment of wealth. A gourmet, a charmer, and an ever-so-stylish fop, he has come to Sherit to pursue a new fortune. Not, mind you, his own, for Luff is also a mountebank, swindler, and forger of the first water. Yoked together by circumstance, they form an uneasy truce and discover a common goal: capturing the grandest con-man of them all, Horselan Gebbling. Gebbling, who made off with Imbry's previous fortune, is posing as Father Olwyn, Sacredotal Eminence of the Assembly of Tangible Unity, and now claims to cure the invariably fatal ailment known as the lassitude with Black Brillion. But the gemstone is a myth, as our heroes know.Filled with dollops of drollery and an ancient evil, Black Brillion is a science fantasy caper that grows into a metaphysical exploration of the human psyche. Matt Hughes has crossed Jack Vance with Carl Jung to come up with a bold new novel of life on an Earth grown older by millions of years.
Customer Reviews:
SciFi Mystery.......2007-02-17
This here's an odd little book. It's a rather mannered SciFi mystery told in old fashioned prose that's laced with a good bit of wit. As I was reading it, I kept thinking it would make a great movie if it was adapted by Tim Lebbon and directed by David Lynch. I understand it's supposed to be Jack Vance-like, but I've never read him, so I took this book on it's own merits, and I came away thinking it's ok, but I didn't love it, but I'd might consider reading more of Luff Imbry. He's an very memorable and entertaining charlatan.
The Truth.......2005-12-14
I know this is rather cruel but I will say it anyway. Matthew Hughes is no Jack Vance. Maybe 60% but still a fair way to go.
A good read, if not flawless. 3.7 stars.......2005-11-25
_____________________________________________
BLACK BRILLION is the third novel set in Hughes' Archonate/Old Earth universe, but is definitely a standalone, and quite a good one, though not without flaws.
The story opens strongly, with probationary policeman Baro Harkless hot on the trail of the notorious con-man Luff Imbry. Harkless gets his man, and a promotion too, but with a surprising twist: Harkless finds himself teamed with Imbry to track yet another con-man, the even-more notorious Horslan Gebbling. Gebbling, masquerading as Father Olwyn, Sacredotal Eminence, is organizing a landship cruise across the great plain of the Swept, presumably to fleece the passengers....
Here the action bogs down a bit, with the introduction of a noosphere subplot, some sort of collective race-memory, featuring Jungian archetype dream-sequence setpieces, a sure-fire recipe for eyeglaze, at least for me. And Harkless is just too naive and innocent to become a believable character. Really, none of the characters are developed much beyond sketches. And the "Black Brillion" maguffin turns out to be a red herring (but I love the name).
After more eyeglaze Jungstuff, the book gets back on track with dramatic revelations of greed, murder, treason and the resurrection of one of humanity's ancient enemies, and the novel comes to a rousing and satisfactory ending, with all biters well-bit.
The cover art for BLACK BRILLION, by Tom Kidd, is appropriate, atmospheric and, really, quite lovely -- as you can see.
I'm very fond of Hughes' short stories, especially his current
"Hengis Hapthorn" humorous shorts, which are set in a similar universe and appear regularly in F&SF magazine. A number of these are collected in _The Gist Hunter and other stories_, which is on my to-read list.
Happy reading--
Pete Tillman
Flawed, but still very worth a look!.......2005-04-19
I think this book has some flaws but it is still a very worthy read for SF/F fans. I know Matthew Hughes' work mostly from the short stories he has published in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION. My favorite stories from that mag involve the noonaut Guth Bandar, a scholar who travels the Commons---the dreamscape of all human achetypes and experiences. (Think Carl Jung's collective unconscious).
I have not read the two novels that precede BLACK BRILLION, but I am familiar with the Old Earth universe via the Guth Bandar short stories. I have to admit that I did not get into this book at all until about 50 pages in or so, when Guth Bandar shows up and throws a monkey wrench in the main character's undercover police operation. When Bandar and the Commons become involved in the story, it gets a lot more interesting. And the last 100 pages are a total page-turner---I stayed up late to finish the book. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the ending---it seemed a little too tacked-on for such a complex narrative.
Still, I am glad I read this book. I think Matt Hughes is a very talented writer we should see a lot more of, and that this book is well worth purchasing in hardcover.
BTW, I am no relation to Matt Hughes. Just a coincidence that we have the same last name.
An Homage to Vance.......2005-03-28
Matt Hughes has been writing stories of the Archonate for Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine for a couple of years now. We were first introduced to "Old Earth" in two now out of print books, "Fool Errant" and "Fool Me Twice".
This book is NOT a sequel, though it is set in the same universe. And what a universe it is. If you are a Jack Vance "Dying Earth" fan, who loves such stories as "Cugel the Clever", you will enjoy "Black Brillion" a lot. Imagine our Earth in the far future, when the sun is dying, and a bizarre combination of magic and techology intermingle. Now, go back from that time a couple of thousand years, when the Earth is old, old, but there isn't the feeling of ending in the atmosphere, as there is in the Dying Earth books. This is the world of the Archonate.
You will see in the other reviews a bit of what the story is about, but that won't give you the taste of this book. Matt Hughes comes as close to channelling Jack Vance as anyone ever has, and for those who love the language, and story-telling of Vance, they will be in for a treat if they read "Black Brillion", or anything else by Mr. Hughes.

A definitive account of Hitler's private army, and the most objective ever written, Williamson's lavishly illustrated The SS: Hitler's Instrument of Terror follows the organization from its inception in the 1920s to its demise in 1945. The author, an ace writer on German military history, delves into the SS's origins and makeup, its role in the concentration camps and race policy, key figures in the field and in the Nazis' internal affairs, and details of weapons, creeds, and oaths of allegiance.
Customer Reviews:
Very good. Great photos, tons of information, apolitical........2007-09-09
Very much enjoyed this book. Loaded with fascinating pictures and images. Stays out of political opinions or posturing. Highly recommended.
Excellent companion to any WWII History book.......2007-05-30
Comprehensive, profusely illustrated, reader-friendly, concise, nice size edition and clear in its exposition. In about 250 pages Mr. Williamson covers the whole history of these special troops, in all their aspects. Reviewing all its divisions, commanders, foreign nationalities that were incorporated into them, the weapons, the battles, their most talented fighters, etc and without losing the thread of his story: a most remarkable thing. Of course this is no eulogy of the SS, it tells of the barbarities committed as well as the acts of true heroism in battle by some of their soldiers. This is a great history. One can follow their main divisions from their inception long before the war, and how they grew in size and experience parallel to the national circumstances of Germany herself.
The role played by Himmler's crackpot ethnic theories were debunked by sheer necessity of man force: many of its finest soldiers were indeed non-Germans. One feels compelled to read more about this ignominiuos personage, Himmler, as he really was a weird (and evil) guy. On the positive side are outstanding acts of sheer valor and heroism of some soldiers who really deserve to remain in any military history of this war. Some passages of course overlap with the Wehrmacht, since they fought side by side many times, but both the detailed analysis and the wider scope of the SS role are present in this book. Nothing relevant is missing here. A great history book and an engrossing read.
What do you wish to know about the SS?.......2006-05-07
This book broadly covers the organization and History of Hitler's elite enforces providing the reader with great amounts of information on this subject. It hides nothing especially the attrocities.
A must read for those interested in this subject.
An Outstanding Third Reich Source.......2005-03-01
This book is an awesome collection of written material along with rare, powerful photos and diagrams. A standout feature, and my personal favorites, were the illustrations of particular uniforms, medlas, ceremonial decorations, propaganda posters, and weaponry that you don't find in alot of WWII references. Overall, this a great book and a must for WWII enthusiasts.
The Schutzstaffel with an emphasis on the Waffen-SS.......2004-06-15
Many good things can be said about this book. I sought out this book after reading the `Complete Idiot's Guide to Nazi Germany' and found that it had very little information on the SS. I was surprised at the number of photos and pictures in this book. That was the aspect I liked the most. The overall layout of the book was nice with detailed information on the formation of the SS, day to day tasks, subdivisions of the organization, equipment, atrocities on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, and the foreign legions. However, I feel the book could have used more information on the Gestapo, the SD, and the Einsatzgruppen. The Waffen-SS was given plenty of coverage in regards to its individual divisions and campaigns on the two fronts. I would have to say too much information considering that this was supposed to be a book about the entire SS. The sections on the Waffen SS were excellent, without a doubt. The book should have been given a different title which stresses this fact. Overall, the book was easy to read and flowed well with plenty of fascinating information. The author seemed a bit quick to defend the Waffen SS and some of the atrocities it is accused of, constantly stressing the fact that on the whole they were soldiers like those in the Wehrmacht. Though this may or may not have been true, opinions like this should have been kept to a minimum. The book would have been better if the information was just presented and then proceeded to let the reader decide for him or herself.

worldviews from earlier ages.......2007-03-10
The editors provide an ecletic array of source documents. These are sometimes deliberately jarring to the modern reader. But they let us garner some insight into the world views of earlier ages. As in Copernicus diffidently explaining his astronomical deductions, while trying to avoid the ire of the Catholic Church. Closer to our times is a description of work in the factories of Britain early in the 19th century. Showing the appalling conditions under which people had to labour, just to survive.
Sometimes the excerpts seem too short. Especially when the student has to answer questions based on those.
