The Impact of Banking Policy on Trade and Global Stability
Neil H. Ashdown Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567205224 |
Book Description
Ashdown analyzes some of the mainstream theories that policy makers and global leaders use as templates in understanding the international system and measures their effectiveness in explaining the policies of nation-states, particularly in regard to trade and power. Throughout, the United States is used as a case study to see how banking and central bank monetary policies affect international trade and investment. The study examines the banking history of the United States and how the corporate consolidation process was institutionalized with the creation of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. Ashdown concludes that current policies fail to support the national interest by creating policy that allows or ignores sustained trade deficits over consecutive years. He demonstrates how institutions can affect, or even constrain, the policies of nation-states, which is then theoretically generalized in demonstrating how other global actors are shaping the post-bipolar international power structure. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and policy makers involved with economic policy, finance, and international business.

Justice Talking: School Vouchers: Leading Advocates Debate Today's Most Controversial Issues
Kathryn Kolbert Manufacturer: New Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1565847164 |
Book Description
Prominent attorneys debate web censorship and school vouchers in a compelling new book-and-CD series inspired by the popular National Public Radio program Justice Talking. The New Press is proud to announce a major new collaboration with the National Public Radio series Justice Talking, an acclaimed radio program that features leading attorneys debating controversial contemporary issues. In book-and-CD sets that include the complete audio recordings and transcripts of the Justice Talking shows, overviews of the legal and other arguments relating to each issue, and a variety of primary source materials, the Justice Talking series of publications are unparalleled introductions to the leading debates of our time. One of President George W. Bush's priorities has been the expansion of the controversial school voucher program, which ostensibly gives children who attend failing public schools the ability to obtain a better, private education elsewhere. Denounced by its opponents as a thinly disguised attempt to fund parochial schools, the voucher program has become a flash point for anger over public education in general and for how students are being educationally shortchanged. In a fascinating overview of this roiling controversy, Barry Lynn of America's United for Separation of Church and State and Clint Bolick of the Institute for Justice debate the merits of school vouchers in the audio component of this innovative book-and-CD set. Originally aired on National Public Radio as part of the Justice Talking series, the recorded debate is presented here in its entirety. An accompanying book includes a complete transcription along with a summary of the pro and con arguments, both legal and educational, and a range of relevant primary source materials. An incomparable guide to a cutting-edge debate, Justice Talking: School Vouchers offers a roadmap for parents, teachers, community leaders, and others to a complicated yet crucial issue.

Stress and Strain in Epitaxy: Theoretical Concepts, Measurements and Applications
J.-P. Deville , and M. Hanbücken Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0444508651 |
Book Description
This book contains keynote lectures which have been delivered at the 3rd Porquerolles' School on Surface Science, SIR2000 (Surfaces-Interfaces-Relaxation). The aim of this school was to review the main concepts necessary to understand the role of interfacial stress, strain and relaxation in crystal growth by heteroepitaxy. By bringing together scientists from various fields (physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering) which daily use complementary methodological approaches (experiment, theory, modelization), the school allowed to offer 11 multidisciplinary courses. This book addresses the state of art of stress in epitaxial materials, it describes the various methods to measure the atomic displacement and stress fields, it reviews the spectroscopic methods necessary to map the interface chemistry, it details the theoretical methods and concepts which are needed to predict them and it questions the fact that stress and relaxation can induce specific properties in magnetism, catalysis, electron transport and so on.

Understanding Germ Warfare (Science Made Accessible)
Scientific American Manufacturer: Grand Central Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0446679542 |
Book Description
With the recent outbreak of anthrax, the use of daily germ warfare has come to the fore. The sober reality is that pathogens can adapt to every chemical that researchers develop-and the same science that is fighting these diseases can also have a hand in creating and adapting new ones. How germs affect the human body, how they are spread, and what science is doing to combat them is covered in this eye-opening collection from noted scientists in this field.Download Description
In 1969, U.S. Surgeon General William H. Stewart said that it was "time to close the book on infectious disease." But the enemy, and the power of natural selection, had been underestimated. The sober reality is that pathogens can adapt to every chemical researchers develop. And with the surge in global travel, these diseases can be spread as quickly as they are identified. But the same science that is fighting these diseases also has a hand in creating and adapting other pathogens. The use of deadly germs in warfare is nothing new but has recently come to the fore with the recent outbreak of anthrax.UNDERSTANDING GERM WARFARE explores how germs affect the human body, how they are spread, and what science is doing to combat the germs that seem to be more dangerous by the day. With a foreword by Dr. Jack Brown, microbiologist and author of Don't Touch hat Doorknob: How Germs Can Zap You and How You Can Zap Them Back, this collection includes articles by noted scientists including William A. Haseltine, Chairman of Human Genome Sciences, Inc.; Randolph M. Nesse and George C. Williams , co-authors of Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine; and Stuart B Levy, the Director of the Center for Adaptation Genetics and Drug Resistance at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Customer Reviews:
This book is worth reading if you are interested in Biological warfare and germs.......2007-03-20
Sadly, too relevant!.......2004-06-10
The style of writing bears Scientific American's usual editorial skill, as applied to all the articles, written by experts in their fields. Topics discussed include how germs can attack humans, and the current precautions we can take. However, germs can evolve resistance, so we do not face a static picture.
Perhaps the scariest topics describe how a biolab can deliberately modify an existing bacteria or virus, to amplify its danger to us. Unlike nuclear proliferation, the technology required here is much less capital intensive and the knowledge base is far more widely dispersed.
