      Book Description

Ashdown analyzes some of the mainstream theories that policy makers and global leaders use as templates in understanding the international system and measures their effectiveness in explaining the policies of nation-states, particularly in regard to trade and power. Throughout, the United States is used as a case study to see how banking and central bank monetary policies affect international trade and investment. The study examines the banking history of the United States and how the corporate consolidation process was institutionalized with the creation of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. Ashdown concludes that current policies fail to support the national interest by creating policy that allows or ignores sustained trade deficits over consecutive years. He demonstrates how institutions can affect, or even constrain, the policies of nation-states, which is then theoretically generalized in demonstrating how other global actors are shaping the post-bipolar international power structure. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and policy makers involved with economic policy, finance, and international business.

        Book Description

Prominent attorneys debate web censorship and school vouchers in a compelling new book-and-CD series inspired by the popular National Public Radio program Justice Talking. The New Press is proud to announce a major new collaboration with the National Public Radio series Justice Talking, an acclaimed radio program that features leading attorneys debating controversial contemporary issues. In book-and-CD sets that include the complete audio recordings and transcripts of the Justice Talking shows, overviews of the legal and other arguments relating to each issue, and a variety of primary source materials, the Justice Talking series of publications are unparalleled introductions to the leading debates of our time.

One of President George W. Bush's priorities has been the expansion of the controversial school voucher program, which ostensibly gives children who attend failing public schools the ability to obtain a better, private education elsewhere. Denounced by its opponents as a thinly disguised attempt to fund parochial schools, the voucher program has become a flash point for anger over public education in general and for how students are being educationally shortchanged. In a fascinating overview of this roiling controversy, Barry Lynn of America's United for Separation of Church and State and Clint Bolick of the Institute for Justice debate the merits of school vouchers in the audio component of this innovative book-and-CD set. Originally aired on National Public Radio as part of the Justice Talking series, the recorded debate is presented here in its entirety. An accompanying book includes a complete transcription along with a summary of the pro and con arguments, both legal and educational, and a range of relevant primary source materials. An incomparable guide to a cutting-edge debate, Justice Talking: School Vouchers offers a roadmap for parents, teachers, community leaders, and others to a complicated yet crucial issue.

4 out of 5 stars makes me long for the simple life........1998-08-26

This book came to me just as I have been pondering moving to pennsylvania. This book allowed me to view how rustic her home and life is on the farm. It also appeared to be a guide of the do's and dont's of farm life. The chapter regarding basket weaving was one of my favorites, because I heard the rain and felt the twigs in my hand and fely\t as if I was on the porch wihtMs. Lennon. Her diary style writing even made it seem possible to live with no indoor plumbing.I will read this book again and again and hope there will be more from this author.

                Book Description

This book contains keynote lectures which have been delivered at the 3rd Porquerolles' School on Surface Science, SIR2000 (Surfaces-Interfaces-Relaxation). The aim of this school was to review the main concepts necessary to understand the role of interfacial stress, strain and relaxation in crystal growth by heteroepitaxy. By bringing together scientists from various fields (physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering) which daily use complementary methodological approaches (experiment, theory, modelization), the school allowed to offer 11 multidisciplinary courses. This book addresses the state of art of stress in epitaxial materials, it describes the various methods to measure the atomic displacement and stress fields, it reviews the spectroscopic methods necessary to map the interface chemistry, it details the theoretical methods and concepts which are needed to predict them and it questions the fact that stress and relaxation can induce specific properties in magnetism, catalysis, electron transport and so on.

The field of stress and strain in heteroepitaxy has know large developments during the last ten years. New techniques have been used to set up new devices in which functionalities are obtained through structuration at a nanometer scale. Large-scale integration and reduced dimensions are the key factors to optimize the achievements of these devices. Already used in industry (quantum wells, magnetic sensors), these devices are obtained by molecular beam epitaxy, sputtering or pulsed laser deposition. Their reduced dimensionality increased the number of surfaces and interfaces, the role of which has to be precised. Experimentalists try now to associate materials having very different crystal structure and chemical composition. The elastic stress stored in the device can induce various phenomena which have to be evaluated, understood and predicted. The book intends also to show that many questions are still in debate.

                  Book Description

There have been many books about Waterloo, but never one to rival this in scale or authority. The text, based upon extensive research, describes both the battle and the campaign that preceded it in detail, drawing upon the firsthand accounts of participants on all sides in order to give the reader a vivid feeling for the experiences of those who fought upon this most celebrated of all battlefields. The many full color maps, all specially commissioned for the book, and the numerous diagrams and photographs, the majority in color, as well as sixteen pages of original paintings, make the book a feast for the eyes and a collector's dream.

This is a great read - full of very interesting detail. If you aee interested in the Battle this is a great reference book to have.

                  5 out of 5 stars In a word...WOW!.......2006-05-09

I wish many other authors who understake the task of writing a "companion" book to a specific venture would first take a page from Mark Adkin. He has set about to compile a book FULL of information both relevant to the Battle of Waterloo itself as well as the necessary and informative background on several aspects related to the battle. He does this in a most readable format and writing style as well. I only wish I had purchased this book prior to reading Alessandro Barbero's The Battle: A New History of Waterloo. It would have really helped fill in the voids left by the lack of maps and information in that particular book.

Adkin breaks down the book and deals in detail with The Campaign, Orders of Battle, Command and Control, The Battlefield, The Infantry, The Calvary, The Artillery, Other Arms and Services (such as medical and engineering services), The Highlights and finally Myths and Controversies.

As each section is recorded, Adkin lays out the required information for a full grasp of the subject matter and how it relates to the strategy and tatics of the era as well as the specific battle itself. It is this "background" information that I personally found to be worth every penny of the price of the book. On many areas he delves into the debate of the times as to different views on several tatics (such as whether to slice or thrust with the sabres of the calvary). This is often complimented by actual first hand source material of the day.

The book shines in very unique way as well in that it contains many photographs of the actual physical battlefield onto which troop placement and movements have been superimpossed. This really allows the viewer as clear a picture of the battlefield area as one can possibly hope to get. Add in the many anecdotes for each section of the book and one cannot help but come away with a very clear picture of the battle and also the Napoleonic era itself.

If you are interested in this battle or of the Napoleonic Era itself, then I would say this a "must have" book for your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars The companion for the devoted student of Waterloo.......2006-02-19

"The Waterloo Companion" is rightly subtitled "the complete guide to history's most famous battle." Mark Atkin's superb collection of information is less a battlefield history than a sourcebook about the armies who fought at Waterloo, the battlefield itself, and the many backstories that provide depth and context to an understanding of Waterloo.

"The Waterloo Companion" is richly illustrated with maps, diagrams on the locations of units, charts of military formations, color plates of uniforms, timelines, and annotated photographs of the battlefield showing the locations of units. For readers who have previously had access only to narrative and black and white maps, this book will make clear how the terrain influenced events at Waterloo. Atkin's narrative is spare and to the point, and there is every indication that he has done his research on the battle. Atkin gives credit where rightly due to various units and in the process may clear up a few persistent misunderstandings. Visitors to the battlefield will find in this book explanations of the various monuments. Serious students of the battle may find especially interesting a chapter on the myths and controversies of the battle.

This book is highly recommended to serious students of the Battle of Waterloo as providing a major resource of information necessary for understanding the events of 18 June 1815.

                      Book Description

This book offers a convenient, cross-referenced guide for students of international relations, twentieth-century international history, and other related studies. It also provides a comprehensive reference book for the general reader interested in these subjects and the contemporary global order. In recent decades, this field has been studied in greatly increased depth and variety and a large number of terms have been added to the vocabulary. Much writing on international relations presumes understanding of a sophisticated terminology and comparison that are initially daunting. This books is a handy reference guide to this terminology. It will ease the student's task with both the theoretical and factal aspects of their study, providing helpful examples, elaborating context and guiding them to further study. Key entries recommend further reading, while maps and a general annotated bibliography provide additional guidance.

With the recent outbreak of anthrax, the use of daily germ warfare has come to the fore. The sober reality is that pathogens can adapt to every chemical that researchers develop-and the same science that is fighting these diseases can also have a hand in creating and adapting new ones. How germs affect the human body, how they are spread, and what science is doing to combat them is covered in this eye-opening collection from noted scientists in this field.

In 1969, U.S. Surgeon General William H. Stewart said that it was "time to close the book on infectious disease." But the enemy, and the power of natural selection, had been underestimated. The sober reality is that pathogens can adapt to every chemical researchers develop. And with the surge in global travel, these diseases can be spread as quickly as they are identified. But the same science that is fighting these diseases also has a hand in creating and adapting other pathogens. The use of deadly germs in warfare is nothing new but has recently come to the fore with the recent outbreak of anthrax.

UNDERSTANDING GERM WARFARE explores how germs affect the human body, how they are spread, and what science is doing to combat the germs that seem to be more dangerous by the day. With a foreword by Dr. Jack Brown, microbiologist and author of Don't Touch hat Doorknob: How Germs Can Zap You and How You Can Zap Them Back, this collection includes articles by noted scientists including William A. Haseltine, Chairman of Human Genome Sciences, Inc.; Randolph M. Nesse and George C. Williams , co-authors of Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine; and Stuart B Levy, the Director of the Center for Adaptation Genetics and Drug Resistance at Tufts University School of Medicine.

4 out of 5 stars This book is worth reading if you are interested in Biological warfare and germs.......2007-03-20

This book explains how germs become immune to different medicines. It gives many examples of diseases and many possibilities to what the future may have in store for us. Unfortunatly, everything in this book is true so all of the stories of diseases that killed thousands of people were not fiction. During the time of these diseases, the correct vaccines and antibiotics were unknown so many people and animals were killed because of them. Their are many countries working on developing biological weapons but only a few worry the united states because of their past relationship with the US. This book is definently worth reading if you are interested in this kind of stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Sadly, too relevant!.......2004-06-10

In many ways, it would be much better if this book was pure, speculative fiction. Unfortunately, after the terrorist events of 2001, including the anthrax releases, this book is all too timely.

The style of writing bears Scientific American's usual editorial skill, as applied to all the articles, written by experts in their fields. Topics discussed include how germs can attack humans, and the current precautions we can take. However, germs can evolve resistance, so we do not face a static picture.

Perhaps the scariest topics describe how a biolab can deliberately modify an existing bacteria or virus, to amplify its danger to us. Unlike nuclear proliferation, the technology required here is much less capital intensive and the knowledge base is far more widely dispersed.
