Customer Reviews:
Not for PHP programmers.......2006-05-11
"Core" PHP in the title, and Z.Suraski among the authors triggered my desire to acquire the book. Being a "hacker", fond of systems, C, C++ and Java, I was expecting a book from a PHP contributor to be plenty of useful tips, recommendations etc...
What a disappointment. This is an incomplete and disorganized self-congratulatory reference.
Authors, probably paid by the page, integrate useless data separated by numberous blank pages.
Just 2 examples:
- 7 pages of the result of the command "configure --help", without comments. Completely useless.
- 4 pages to talk one page of "PHP tags"! (you know the
< ?php >)
The description of the PHP functions is botched up and incomplete. Listings (samples) are numberous, but unfortunately they are rarely relevant for complex functions. Moreover the function title itself is only headed in "bold" while listings titles are bordered and shaded - it makes the whole hard to read/search.
Regarding the documentation of functions, when they're off the beaten track, usually the authors get their "joker"...
<
< A full discusion of xxx is beyond the scope of this book >> (e.g. see the shared memory). Being a system hacker, the book often gave me the impression that the author(s) don't master what they talk about.
Self-congratulation: if you contributed to the open-source PHP, first, congratulations! PHP is a wonderful language, easy to use, easy to debug, performing well ; his numberous authors around the world deserve a big "Congratulation!". However when it comes to program PHP, one need a serious book talking in details about what we need in our daily work, as programmers. In this book you'll find tons of self-congratulory references, naming lots of people, but not actual material to help your work as a programmer. Well, if this is your intention to know more about the history of PHP, or if you belong to the list of people, go for it, you will get your [free] refill of EGO if you need that.
So let's talk about the key to the book, its index:
Thus, if you are looking for ...
M.Adler, J.Ahto, C.Alexander, T.Arntzen, S.Bakken, H.Bergius, A.Black, M.Boeren, S.Caraveo, J.Clark, E.Dijkstra, D.Eriksson, J.Gaill, A.Gutmans, C.Hagenbuch, S.Hughes, A.Isaacs, A.Karajannis, K.Koehntopp, F.Kromann, M.Matsumoto, T.May, P.Melo, T.Nishimura, L.Philips, E.Raymond, M.Rodeh, S.Ruby, R.Schwartz, D.Stenberg, Z.Suraski, G.Thomson, A.Slooten, E.Warnke, J.Zitting, A.Zmievski...
... you are lucky! They're all in the book
However if you have to *work* with PHP, don't look for instance for these important keywords, they're *not* in this book index: global, Super..., header(), strpos(), lock()...
Actually, it was so irritating not to find what I was looking for that php.net became my reference...
Hard to believe that honest people, besides the ones that contributed to PHP itself, can give more than 2 stars to this book. I believe authors have many friends :)
a welcome addition.......2005-11-30
Leon has done it again... given us a book that developers need and will use. I own a lot of books on PHP. But I ALWAYS refer back to Leon' first Core PHP book when in the midst of creating the perfect solution. FYI: I did not find enough reasons to buy the second edition, covering PHP v4.x. True, there is little on each database. As it should be... one only needs to know how to use PHP with their RDBMS of choice. Which this book does well. I have created world class solutions, secure, money making web sites, and Leon's efforts have made it easier for me to get more done in less time. As one reviewer pointed out, this book may not be for everyone. As programmer of "C", Delphi/Pascal, Perl and tons of cgi-bin scripting, his approach is perfect for me.
The quality doesn't match the bulk........2005-07-15
Given the esteem with which the authors are held, one might expect a much better piece of work than this effort. The volume is huge, the coverage of topics much too broad, to warrant the name Core PHP Programming.XML and Generating Graphics are certainly not a core piece of any programming language. Core means syntax, grammar, concepts and the indispensable basics. A mere 100 pages covers eight (8) different databases. There are more than one thousand (1000+) pages in the book ! Database connectivity and processing is probably the single largest application of PHP. You won't learnd much here. The coverage of XML, for example, is similarly shallow. This is certainly not suitable as a textbook. A sad performance by two very important people in the PHP community. From him to whom is given, much is asked. Caveat Emptor.
A thorough text with lasting value.......2005-05-12
This was my second PHP book (after the Quickstart series) and it has proven to be one of the few coding books I can't live without. As an introduction to PHP language constructs, it covers enough to get you started with clear text and concise examples. As a reference, it's invaluable!! Good detail of functions and parameters... interesting stuff on design patterns. I wish there was more instruction on the PHP5 object model, but not enought of an issue to bring down the rating.
Overall, a very thorough, clear text.
Great Reference/Tutorial Mixture.......2004-12-28
Now, understand I went into this book knowing NOTHING about PHP, but I did have a background in Perl, HTML, JavaScript, ASP, Visual Basic, C++, CSS, and QBasic. What's another language, right? It seems to me that all the (horribly) negative reviews for this book come from people that didn't understand it. Programming books are written for certain types of people, and most of the myriad of choices are valid for someone. If you do not know what "syntax" means, this book might not be for you.
I purchased this book because it had simple tutorials and a good index in the back. Because I knew nothing about PHP structurally speaking, I needed a few chapters of tutorials to figure out how to do this or that. From there, I relied on their reference for at-a-glance instructions on how to form arrays, or functions. Again, if you do not know what an array is or what a function is, this book is not for you.
When selecting a programming book, whether you have digital bytes running through your blood or just starting out, go to a freakin' book store and thumb through the resources on the shelf. See how they are written. See if they will teach you something productive. Many basic books fail to tell you the transitional steps to make your own code. Many "advanced" books are merely reference code, that are not a very good starting point for people, well, starting out. Some have illustrations. Some have CDs.
For me, this was the perfect guide. In conjunction with PHP.net, there is no task I cannot conquer with this language.

Book Description
This book presents a model which simulates the effects of financial reforms in transitional economies, which is then applied to Poland to assess the effectiveness of the policies analyzed.
Book Description
In this intimate portrait of an island lobstering community and an eccentric band of renegade biologists, journalist
Trevor Corson escorts the reader onto the slippery decks of fishing boats, through danger-filled scuba dives, and deep into the churning currents of the Gulf of Maine to learn about the secret undersea lives of lobsters.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Who Knew Lobsters Could Be So Entertaining?.......2007-10-08
This was an awesome read and was the book that began me interested in reading books about obscure animals. Since this book, I have read books about the platypus, coelacanth, and other wonderous creatures of the world. I learned alot about the lobster and the men that search for them as livelihood or scientific endeavor. This book willnot disappoint! Read it!
Self-imposed or Government-mandated regulation?.......2007-10-05
Trevor Corson does a great job of putting a face on the lobster fishery, including its past, its future, and of some of the people who participate in it. It also does a super job at opening the door so we can catch a glimpse of relationships between lobstermen, the scientific community, and government agencies that have connections to America's fisheries.
I am an invertebrate zoologist by training, and I teach courses in marine biology and invertebrate zoology. Even a of couple years after reading this book I refer to it in my classes. Corson provides some good summary information on the status of our understanding of the ecology and reproductive biology of the American lobster, as well as the status of the Maine lobster fishery.
If you are like me, you will be impressed by the self-regulating fisheries practices developed and used by lobstemen that have maintained the lobster fishery for many, many years. If the info in the book is accurate, it appears that problems crop up in the fishery most often when government agencies try to develop and impose their own regulations on lobstermen. That was an eye-opener.
Another delightful part of the book explored interactions between lobstermen and the scientific community. Their developing relationship appears to have potential to benefit both parties.
I found the book to be readable and enjoyable through and through.
5 stars for fun (and food)
Wow!.......2007-09-21
This was an absolutely fascinating book! Who knew lobsters were so interesting? Not me!
Must reading for lobster fans !!.......2007-09-09
This entertaining book provides many insights about the New England lobster and the lobster industry. Corson describes the adventurous lives of these tenacious relatives of the spider. Every year they walk miles from deep in the continental shelf to find the warm summer waters close to shore. There they lay their eggs, shed their shells, and occasionally find their way into lobster pots.
A lobsterman himself, Corson also shares his own experience as one of the last breed of seafaring "hunter-gatherers". Importantly, he also describes how the lobster industry has tried preserve the lobster population through scientifc research and restrictions on harvesting.
As one who grew up in a lobstering town, I found this book very informative and entertaining, with a great balance of marine biology, New England history and good old fashioned story-telling. It is a "must read" for anyone interested in knowing more about the coastal environment, the New England fishery--or that boiled red crustacean starring at the clambake.
The Intelligent Crustacean.......2007-07-23
I loved this book. I always thought that lobsters were pretty smart, but this peek into their private life below the waves is just great. The book is easy reading, and weaves lobster lore with scientific findings, and brings the reader into the life of Maine lobstermen and their familes, as well as the scientists who help the lobstermen sustain their industry.
You will not be disappointed. A quick read.
But Mr. Martin, why did you write a summary of the book instead of a review on what you thought of the book? After your review, what is left for the reader to uncover between the pages?

Book Description
A hilarious and irresistible new novel by Joe Coomer, whom The Washington Times calls "a marvelously creative comic writer"
It's where you sit down that determines everything in life.
Sarah's aunt Edna paints portraits of chairs. Not people in chairs, just chairs. The old house is filled with the paintings, and the chairs themselves surround her work-a silent yet vigilant audience. At the funeral of Grandma Hutton-whom Edna has cared for through an agonizingly long and vague illness-Sarah begins helping her aunt clean up the last of a life. This includes honoring Grandma's surprising wish to have her ashes scattered in Scotland.
"We were two fat women, eighteen years apart, a chair artist and a designer of Christmas ornaments, who only knew we had troubles and a hot summer to get through," says Sarah. But as it turns out, there is a great deal more to quirky Aunt Edna's troubles than Sarah could possibly imagine. As the novel turns from the hot, oppressive heat of Texas to the misty beauty of Scotland, she learns of her aunt's remarkable secret life and comes to fully understand the fragile business of living, and even of dying.
Praised for his richly drawn characters and as a master storyteller, Joe Coomer is at the height of his powers in One Vacant Chair.
Winner of the S. Mariella Gable Fiction Prize
Customer Reviews:
everything this fiction reader looks for.......2007-08-19
This story has everything I look for in a book: excellent characters who evolve; a good, strong plot; romance; and humor.
Sarah is a fourty-something mother whose husband has betrayed her and whose grandmother has just died. She takes refuge with and also takes care of her grieving Aunt Edna, grandmother's caretaker for the last 20 some years.
The cast of characters includes a blind black man who repairs the chairs that Edna endlessly paints, the rest of the family who are quite quirky and a southern baptist minister with a bad toupee.
There's old family squabbles, new acquaintance mystery. And most of all, there's a big old life lesson - what you see is not always what you get. It's all in what you choose to see.
This is not quite a light read; it's a lot thicker than that. But it is utterly lovely.

Pull up a chair and start reading! Coomer at his heart-warming best!.......2006-06-22
Since Joe Coomer and I are distant relatives (cousins by marriage), I've been reading his books for about four years. I started with KENTUCKY LOVE because that's where his ancestors and mine began. What a book that was!
Then I read three more, in no particular order, so I'm wandering helter-skelter through his writing career ... and enjoying every moment of these fine reads.
Each book I read is so unique from the other, but each has common threads: warmth, love of family and friends, love of life, life lessons, smooth reading, realistic characters, etc.
I really looooooove the concept of ONE VACANT CHAIR, and appreciate finely-drawn characters who have unusual jobs in life.
Go, Joe!!! (And congratulations on the movie deal on THE LOOP. Can't wait to see the movie!)
Pick a Chair.......2006-06-10
"We were two fat women, eighteen years apart, a chair artist and a designer of Christmas ornaments, who only knew we had troubles and a hot summer to get through," says Sarah. But as it turns out, there is a great deal more to quirky Aunt Edna's troubles than Sarah could possibly imagine. As the novel turns from the hot, oppressive heat of Texas to the misty beauty of Scotland, she learns of her aunt's remarkable secret life and comes to fully understand the fragile business of living, and even of dying.
My reviewing experience is minimal, but it would be remiss of me to not let you know how much I enjoyed this book. Joe Coomer's book "One Vacant Chair" is one of the most well-written stories that I have ever read. If you have the time this summer and you're looking for a great read, try this book. You won't be disappointed.
"It's where you sit down that determines everything in life."
Tell Your Friends.......2006-06-04
Friends and family have been phoned and emailed with the rave review I've given this book. Funny, touching, sweet, and spicy---it has everything you hope a book will have, and then some. Realistic characters, great dialog and a realistic plot kept me reading well into the night. Tell your friends...they'll thank you.
A Great Read.......2004-01-07
This book works on so many different levels. It's a great read that's hard to put down once you start. It has wonderfully fleshed out characters who come to life on the page. The themes are compelling, and Coomer handles them with a strong sense of humor and sensitivity. The discussion of art technique adds another interesting dimension. All in all, I loved this book!
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating and frightening!.......2007-05-27
Man's desire to be god will eventually lead him to the unltimate self-destruction and the demolition of the planet he inhabits. "Angels don't play this HAARP" is a book that must be read by every citizen who cares about the condition of this planet. It will help the reader learn about man's manipulation of mother earth, and the possibility of rendering this gift into ruin....
Angels Don't Play This Haarp.......2007-02-18
Got me started in the direction of Tesla. Didn't realize that Begich was so much of a Bush hater politically. Once detected political slant, I didn't trust further opinions.
Always Tesla .......2006-08-07
The printing is terribly small and bad quality. The contents, although repetitive, are of upmost interest and raise a lot of questions specially about the weather changes that we are being confronted with daily. It seems to be an honest description. Of course that when you're dealing with state secrecy - i.e. disinformation, counter information, etc - it is always very difficult to go any further than that.
Angels don't play.......2005-08-13
Since I am a rank beginner to the topic of HAARP, I found the book helpful.
Fascinating.......2004-09-29
GREAT READ - While reading this is I had the image of Nichola Tesla sitting by one of his inventions calmly reading a book with his longish hair standing out on edge due to static electricity. PBS has a wonderful special on him that is worth adding to your library.
That said, this is a frightening book if even a small part of it is authentic. It makes some very good arguements for being "off the grid" and out in the country. In an age where people are concerned about global warming this is a very interesting concept - some of the HAARP technology can be used to heat up the ionosphere in order to bounce lasers off of it and back to earth. Some of the other applications being considered are also surprising. The should be a wildly read and circulated book. I am not a scientist and I imagine that some of what is contained here is probably hotly debated. Some of the work contained in this book and also Tesla have been written about in the science journal Nexxus.
Book Description
"...provides the best account now available in English." -- Journal of the American Oriental Society
Gerald Hawtings book has long been acknowledged as the standard introductory survey of this complex period in Arab and Islamic history. Now it is once more made available, with the addition of a new Introduction by the author which examines recent significant contributions to scholarship in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Readable introduction.......2004-03-15
Hawting's history of the Ummayad Caliphate is quite readable -- and straightens out lots of questions I had about the replacement of the Ummayads by the Abbasid dynasty (I had never understood that the jostling went on for so much of the late Ummayad period). Hawting is also helpful on understanding how much Arabisation and Islamisation went hand in hand AND were resisted by the Caliphate for tax-base-preservation reasons (among others).
The book is reasonably transparent to the non-specialist. The glossary is useful and he explains most terms both in the text and in the glossary (though there are a few misfires on that score).
I've given it 4 rather than 5 stars for the non-specialist reader because it's also SHORT! Those of us who want to know about the early Caliphate without reading, say, reading Madelung's 400-pager on the succession to Muhammad are grateful for a 141-page introduction.

Best book ever YeeeHaaaa.......2005-10-24
This book was amazing and I had so much fun reading it. You would never guess that this book would be this good. It has everything you would ever need to win at Science Fair. O my god I must be stoned.
Did the author really try these experiments ?.......2002-04-08
I agree with Cynthia A Albano from Wood-Ridge, New Jersey United States. My daughter and I tried the Springing Spring Project and it DID NOT work. Now, she needs to talk to her teacher about changing the experiment. I recommended to her to show that the author is wrong and how the experiment should work.
100 First Prize Make it Yourself Science Fair Projects.......2002-02-05
Unfortunately, the first project my son attempted was on electromagnetism --- and it didnt work!!! We checked, double-checked, and triple-checked his set-up and it was exact - but no way could we make this project work! Now he's forced to go back to his teacher, hope she allows him to revise the project which she'd already approved, and start all over. This time, at least - we'll make sure he tries the project out before he submits his ideas to the teacher for approval!
Interesting Demonstrations, but not really for science fairs.......2001-11-13
The author obviously put alot of work into thinking up some of the projects, but they are like projects from out school lab book that "demonstrate" certain scientific principles, they don't actualy work as "science fair projects" because they
don't set out to solve a question. Its like "build tornado" or "build this" or "build that" but they are not sceice fair prjects. I think its a good curiosity book to have around if you're into tinkering with stuff, but I dont think its good for coming up with a science fair project.
The easyest book out there.......2000-12-07
If you need a book to do a sciend fair project it easy it tells you everything you need to know!

Book Description
Some of the largest and biologically richest tropical forests remaining in the world are found among the 600 islands of Papua New Guinea. These forests support a diverse bat fauna, with 91 native species ranging from the greater flying fox, with a wingspan of 1.6 meters, to the tiny, 2.5-gram lesser sheath-tailed bat. Nineteen of Papua New Guinea's bat species are found nowhere else on Earth.
Bats of Papua New Guinea is a handy, portable field guide to these fascinating flying mammals, which play crucial ecological roles as pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect predators. Accessible to amateur naturalists and scientists alike, this guide contains more than 60 color illustrations, line drawings, and maps. Detailed descriptions for each species provide information on field identification, geographic range, natural history (ecology, behavior, physiology), and conservation status. Each entry also gives a complete list of the places where the bat has been found in Papua New Guinea, as well as a list of the bats examined by the author and standard measurements recorded from them.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and practical guide........2001-10-01
I have found this book very useful both in the field and in the museum. It represents an excellent feat of practical scholarship by Bonaccorso, with good keys, locality information (with maps), reference to specific museum specimens, and external measurements for all species from PNG, including the provinces in the Bismarcks and northern Solomons. It is not only a terrific synthesis of what is known of bat biology in the country, but also offers a large store of new information. Also extremely handy are the comprehensive gazetteer at the end with lat/long coordinates and the good bibliography. Fiona Reid's excellent color illustrations round out the guide.
