The Bank for International Settlements is only 1-2 years away from effectively requiring all major financial institutions in the world to use a sophisticated credit models. The most widely used model is based on the 1974 Merton model of risky debt. A more recent extension of the Merton model of risky debt is the Shimko, Tejima and van Deventer (1993) model, which allows for simultaneous analysis of credit risk and interest rate risk.

Increasingly, however, bankers are turning to a newer class of models called "reduced form credit models" because of their analytical power for both complex derivatives like credit derivatives and the mark to market of loans on a credit adjusted basis.

The Basel Capital Accords place a heavy emphasis on financial institutions' ability to assess credit risk. In this book, two of the world's best-known risk management experts assess both the Merton model and reduced form credit models and show exactly how to measure model performance as the Basel Accords require. They use the same tests to assess the likely effectiveness of the Basel Capital Accords in measuring the safety and soundness of financial institutions.

The authors go into great detail in assessing the ability of leading credit models to evaluate collateralized debt obligations, loan commitments, collateralized loans, as well as retail and small business loan portfolios.

Credit Risk Models and the Basel Accords reviews the objectives of the credit risk management process, introduces the theory of the Merton and reduced form credit models, shows how the models can be used in practice, and then examines a wide range of historical data to show the relative performance of the models in practice.

This book offers a balanced review of the newer reduced form models and the older Merton model. John Whalley describes and uses a numerical general equilibrium model of world trade to explore issues in the area of trade liberalization among major world trading areas - the European Economic Community, the United States, Japan, and developing countries. His book is unique both in using this framework to analyze world trading patterns, and in considering a number of trading areas simultaneously within the same model. It is able to quantify the merits of alternative actions in international trade policy, the ways that the interests of the EEC, the United States, and Japan are similar and ways in which they differ, and show how the interests of less developed countries are affected by various trade liberalization initiatives.

Part I provides a description of the model, data sources and adjustments to basic data, and methods for specification and solution of the model. Part II presents results from model applications along with policy conclusions. Applications include analysis of tariff cutting formulae in the Toyko Round, an evaluation of the Tokyo Round trade agreement, examination of incentives for a retaliatory trade protection 'war' between world trade blocs, and analysis of the impact of protectionist policies on North-South trade.

Deeper than you ever thought..........2005-04-16

I highly recommend this book for a number of reasons.
If you are just starting to delve into the knowledge about Guatemala's tragic civil war this is the place to start. What this is is an abridged version of the Human Rights report on the atrocities committed by the Guatemalan army. This book is made up of two things: analysis and then personal testimonies from the victims.

What it does for you is reveal that these crimes committed against the indigenous population went far beyond simply stated genocide and ethnic cleansing. There was far more to the army's tactics than massacre and physical torture.

The crimes against the Mayas were highly psychological and I think that this report reveals that and puts it clearly. This book takes what you might already know about the horror and brings you in deeper. By the time you're done you will have a more clear, more concise, more accurate picture of what was done by the army to not only affect these people but to also keep them in silence about a war that not too many people know about.

It also shows why Guatemala is still so devastated by this war, and what it's going to take to ensure that this history doesn't repeat itself. It's difficult in some places to read, but I think you need to. As you sit in your comfortable house reading it, I think it will change your perception on life. It did mine anyway.

Factually Honest and Well Researched.......2000-08-30

This book is a summarization of a human rights report presented in Guatemala in 1998. Through eye-witness testimony, it outlines the military atrocities committed during Guatemala's Civil War and the effect the war has had on Guatemala's indigenous population.

This edition has been edited from the original lengthy report but retains important testimony in smaller quotes where relevant and offers the reader stark evidence of the massive violence as well as the psychological warfare that was perpetrated on the citizens of Guatemala.

The author of this report was killed two days after it was published. His assailant has not yet been brought to justice. This report is a must read for anyone interested in Human Rights, Native cultures, or the history of Guatemala.

A Classic Handbook on Global Warming and our Earth's Environment.......2006-09-27

This book is a classic on the subjects of the environment and global warming and is written in easy-to-understand language for the lay person. Reading or re-reading this 1991 book now, in 2006, is like finding a time capsule that predicted the future. There are sections on practical political actions to take and a rudimentary explaination of the political process to change. A great read that really makes you think about where we have been and where we are going in the care and well-being of our home planet. I recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about global warming and our environment.

A must have for any environmental books collection.

It's time to act NOW.......1998-09-08

Every once in a while you hear something about the environment, namely the ways in which we're destroying our world - global warming, ozone depletion, toxic waste, etc. Then you nod and say: "Oh yes, it's very important, something has to be done", but you just go on with your life doing absolutely nothing. This book is out to change that. It will give you a new way of looking at the world - and you won't like what you see. This book isn't just excellent - it's a "must". Through flowing style and easily understood points, the two grand masters of science fiction give us their most important work ever - and this book is all REAL. Written a year before Asimov's death, it's not only an account of the "maladies and cures", but also a loud wake-up call for every one of us to get up and ACT. Even if the political- and activist-oriented sections are somewhat schematic, the book's importance is in it's true power to influence people. I know that at least for me, "Our Angry Earth" was the beginning of a new stage of life. Asimov and Pohl, who wrote about a great future for humanity, are asking us not let our race finish itself off just when we were getting started. We just can't go down like that. It's time for YOU to read this book and look out your window. Can you smell the smog? It's going to kill your children if you don't do something about it.

A Disappointed Reader.......1997-08-20

I picked this book up because it was (co)authored by Isaac Asimov. But even though it is published under the names of Asimov and Pohl, the book definitely does NOT read in the style of Asimov. It is a disappointment for those looking for the usual `wit and charm' of the old Doctor. `Our Angry Earth' lacks emotion as the author(s) dryly present point after point on the diverse ways in which we are abusing our planet (i.e., toxic emissions, acid rain, deforestation, global warming, etc.). Hence, the title. Though much of the content may be (and probably is) accurate from a scientific perspective, the authors present it in such a way that you can't help but feel you're listening to a street-corner doomsday prophet. Very unconvincing. Finally, in the early sections of the book, we are lead to believe the authors will propose `workable' solutions to our environmental ills. Yet, by the end of the book, we are presented with solutions that are nothing new and questionably workable (writing letters, forming environmental clubs, getting involved in politics). Are we polluting our planet? Unquestionably, yes. Have the authors galvanized us to action? Unfortunately, no
