    Book Description

Credit risk evaluation is as old as commerce itself.  Processes have been refined over centuries based on cumulative experience, judgment and learning.  The rapid development of financial markets however has tested the limits of the traditional approach as highly publicized credit losses and huge non-performing loans across the globe well document.  Distress among many credit professionals and regulators prevails.  This book describes a different and unemotional approach to credit risk evaluation.  Based on abstract and objective credit models, the concept of credit risk measurement is introduced through a range of theoretical and practical perspectives.

From making a case for credit risk measurement as a complement to the more traditional approaches to credit risk management, the book covers validation, applications and new areas of credit risk management.  Contributions by leading academics, practitioners and consultants provide for scholars and credit risk professionals but also less mathematically inclined readers or interested parties, a wide spectrum of ideas and concepts for developing and improving their own viewpoint, processes and approaches.  A demo-CD of one particular model is included for practical testing and playing with applied credit risk measurement concepts.

              Book Description

              Book Description

From Maggie Estep, heralded author of Diary of an Emotional Idiot, comes this darkly funny collection of inter-connected stories.

Jody Ray, a young psychiatrist, conceals her own nymphomania -- and a penchant for stiletto boots -- behind a conservative navy work suit. After Jody meets Rob and moves into his apartment, life for this nice, normal Jewish boy from Chicago will never be the same. Even without the speed she shoots to get through medical school, Jody's sexual and emotional demands would have pushed poor Rob to the suicide attempt that eventually turns him into one of her patients. Like Rob, the other men she meets cannot help but be caught and destroyed in the vortex she creates. Some flee to the relative safety of Jody's old acquaintance, Katie Murphy. Though a foul-mouthed former sex-phone operator, this lion tamer's daughter has come through life hopeful and intact.

Soft Maniacs traces the interwoven lives of these two women as they struggle to make their way in an erratic world they can't quite get a grasp on. Through sharp, vigorous prose, underlaid with a piercing wit, Maggie Estep leads us on a roller coaster tour of the underbelly of their psyches, surprising and delighting us at every turn. At once frightening and hilarious, heartbreaking and hopeful, Soft Maniacs is an unforgettable exploration of how people find one another in an accelerated world.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Short fiction revived?.......2002-09-09

Short fiction is hard to come by these days, But estep comes into the scene in full force. I am not sure how good her novels are, but her short works hold quite a few gems.

3 out of 5 stars Not genius but a good read.......2002-03-19

Ms. Estep has created an interesting, fast paced world here in her book Soft Maniacs. The books is well written, funny, sad, and at times a bit disturbing. I found it to be very similar to David Schickler's, "Kissing in Manhattan." The main difference is that the sexual deviance in this book seems to be a little more realistic and plausable.

The arc of stories follows a handful of characters and how their lives intertwine. For the most part the stories, while out there, were really good. My one problem with the book is that the characterization is a bit weak at times. The author is so driven by making these characters and plots meet at weird places and then bounce back into space that we're left with only a few real, three dimensional people. (The horse attendant with the bad back for example). At times the narrators seem to be capable of great introspection and insight, however the choices they have made in their lives contradict this intelligence.

I would say you should read this, its quick, fun, funny, and interesting. Not a great literary work, but not trash either.

              1 out of 5 stars False Maniacs.......2002-03-17

(My actual "Rating" would be "No Star", but the option doesn't exist in Amazon's form)

It's evident from the numbers of happy camper-readers
that this book describes for the suburban mall crowd the desperately colorful life of urban bohemians and artist wannabes.

By now, it's a tired strategy, the so-called book of "interlocking stories." When you read this description, read
"couldn't make a novel out of it, and the publisher wanted to be able to make money off republishing the stories."

The lady sure works hard at her prose. It shows, as it is
exhausting to read after a while. The interlocking stories are repetitive in their use of pseudo-tough tropes--but the kids will like that and feel real tough reading them in their dorm rooms. The titillation is really on the high-school gross-out level, with a bit of the required lesbian-voyeur-topless-dancing-ex-amateur-hooker thrown in. But no more so than you get on MTV Real World or a Saturday Night Live/Comedy Central Sketch.

So, though here and there these stories mock the middle-brow, they perfectly embody it. This work is just the "bohemian" brand of fake literature that's been spewing out of publishing houses (like "The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing") lately.

But the kids are buying it.

              4 out of 5 stars Waxing Circus-like.......2000-10-22

Soft Maniacs was difficult to get into, however personally, it didn't take me too long to adjust; it was real without being real. It was honest on the most perverted of levels; arousing and saddening. I discovered Maggie via Alan Wilder's spoiled brainchild, Recoil, to which she collaborated on Unsound Methods, which didin't hook me entirely until I listened to Love is a Dog from Hell. Maggie is itchy and unique, and definitely for those who veer toward the freakier side of fiction. I don't recommend her to all people, only those willing to recognise that perverse weirdness in us all.

5 out of 5 stars Maggie Does it Again!.......2000-08-31

Maggie fans will not be let down by her latest book, "Soft Maniacs." It is a collection of short stories with characters that cross over from story to story. Most of the stories are about 20-30 somethings in New York City; however, Maggie does branch out into carnival workers. As with her previous book, "Diary of an Emotional Idiot," Maggie's recent work is full of unusual people described with Maggie's irrististable wit. Fans of Maggie's earlier work will likely notice a hint of maturity which only serves to strengthen her latest work.

              Book Description

Spanning over a thousand years and an immense geographical area, the Roman Empire was the greatest in world history. At its most powerful, the Empire cast a shadow across the known world, and its legacy continues to influence politics, art and culture around the world today. Rome’s power was won on the battlefield, and the greatness of the Empire is reflected in the warlike reputations of the enemies it subdued. Hannibal, the Carthaginians, Mithridates, the Gauls, the Sassanid Persians and the infamous Goths are amongst the forces that battled the might of Rome. Rome and Her Enemies juxtaposes the society and military structure of each of these peoples with those of the contemporary Roman army. Using previously published Osprey material, this book is divided into four chronological sections focusing on major wars and battles, is lavishly illustrated throughout, and colour photographs, artwork and maps support the text to provide a comprehensive introduction to the rise and fall of an empire created and destroyed by war. Introduction by Tom Holland, bestselling author of ‘Persian Fire’ and ‘Rubicon’.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Rome and Her Enemies.......2007-09-25

This book appears to be written by 2 groups of authors (Note: Jane Penrose is listed as editor not author). 1 group are the standard Osprey history writers. The other group appears to standard journalist(s).
The sections written by the Osprey writers are objective and informative. For example there are sections detailing the training and fighting methods of the Roman Army, Gallic Army, Celtiberian tribes and several other armies. Most of the sidebars in the book are objective and give interesting informatiuon such as explaining the Roman road sytem in Britian. Also the maps and the drawings in this book are clear, colorful and informative.
The sections of the book written by the journalist(s) are based on political correctness. For example, the writer criticizes the portrayal of Attila the Hun as a menace to society stating "his "greatest crime was to be different, in physical appearance, cultural background and attitude towards urban civilisation." However, in reference to China's belief the Huns were a menace to their civilization the journalist(s) claims that those were different Huns.
The journalist written sections also claim during Partia's existence "Rome - apart from a few fleeting successes - had been held as bay for 3 centuries." However, in the chapter concerning Persia's overrunning of Parthia and challenging Rome, the journalist(s) state "The change was significant since the Romans had generally dominated the Parthians and indeed repeated Roman successes had contributed to undermining royal prestige.." This may be 2 politically correct journalist not coordinating their political correctness.
The journalist(s) also blame Rome for causing the Punic Wars stating "the Romans saw an opportunity to advantage themselves" and that Roman expansion was "unconstrained". While there is some truth to these statements Roman expansion was not the sole cause of the wars. Carthage's goal of controlling all of the western Mediterranean (including Sicily) and limiting Roman influence to the Italian peninsula was the other major cause of the Punic Wars.
There are other examples of political correctness throughout this book.
Rome and Her Enemies could have been a very good book but political correctness ruined it.
Hopefully, in the future, Osprey will stick with its standard history writers rather than using journalists otherwise, in my opinion, it could mean the decline and fall of Osprey.

Christopher Hill, the peerless people's historian of the 17th century, has written a book that challenges the common history of liberty and the birth of liberal politics. While historians from Lord Acton to J. H. Hexter have written histories in which property-holding men figure as the champions of liberal freedom, Professor Hill deftly illustrates the manner in which enclosure laws and claims to property were used to deny the traditional rights of the common folk of 17th-century England. Drawing evidence from popular ballads, plays, and his extensive knowledge of the period's literature, Professor Hill demonstrates that the supposed "dawn" of liberal rights and freedoms brought economic dependence, penal punishment, and the loss of freedom for the rural poor and artisan classes who were being swiftly enveloped in a burgeoning commercial society.

              Book Description

In the plays and popular folklore of the 17th and 18th centuries are many expressions of liberty against the law: there are the colorful beggars of "The Jovial Crew" who are no worse than the eminent politicians; the ballads of Robin Hood personify the opposition between the freedom of the outlaw in the woods and the status constraints on the society man. Christopher Hill considers how the peasantry was effected by enclosures, the loss of many traditional rights, and draconian punishments for minor transgressions. These expressions of contempt for the law challenge the equation of law with property and begin to pose the question, "Freedom for Whom?" Wrote Keith Thomas in The Guardian, "Hill must have read more of the literature written in and about 17-century England than anyone who has ever lived. He misses nothing."

4 out of 5 stars A LITERARY LOOK AT THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.......2007-09-10

The late pre-eminent historian of the under classes of the English Revolution, Christopher Hill, has taken the myriad literary and cultural ideas, serious and zany, that surfaced during the period between 1620-1720, the heart of the conversion of England from an agricultural to an embryonic capitalist economy, and given us his take on some previously understudied and misunderstood notions, many that have not made the conventional history books. I note that he uses as his endpoint John Gay's Beggar's Opera, a work later adapted for the stage by Bertolt Brecht, and that I have reviewed elsewhere in this space (see September 2007 archives). One of the points discussed in that review is whether the figure of one MacHealth the central figure of the work, former imperial soldier and leader of a profitable criminal gang is an incipient capitalist or the relic of an earlier age. Professor Hill's book would seem to provide ammunition for the proposition that Mac Health, like the legendary Robin Hood, was a representative figure of `freedom' from the imperatives of capitalist contract, routine and law and harked back to the values of the old pastoral society.

In this expansively footnoted book Mr. Hill, as he has done elsewhere, connects the dramatic break-up of traditional agrarian English society; the resulting vast increase of 'masterless' men not bound to traditional authority and potentially receptive to new ideas; the widespread availability of the protestant Bible brought about by the revolution in printing and thus permitting widespread distribution to the masses; the effects of the Protestant Reformation on individual responsibility; the discrediting of the theology of the divine right of kings; the role of the priesthood of all believers that foreshadow a very modern concept of the validity of individual religious expression; radical interpretations of equality and primitive communism, particularly the work of Gerrard Winstanley ; the Puritan ethic and many more subjects of interests to bring to life what the common people who hitherto had barely entered the stage of history were reading, watching, thinking and doing.

Professor Hill as well, using the extensive prose and poetic literature of the age as a guide, gives us a rudimentary cultural tour of how the under classes responded to the break down of their tradition agrarian lives (and the generally brutal reply of the ruling classes). Elsewhere he has discussed `masterless' men driven out of the villages, forests and fens by the enclosures of the land in the interest of capitalist agricultural production for the market. Here he discusses the literature developed around those men (and women). He tackles, for those who know his work, the now familiar themes of Robin Hood, highwaymen, vagrants, beggars and the like. He moreover, as always, connects trends in biblical interpretation with their effect on the on-going social changes. Furthermore he does an extensive study of the literature of English imperialist expansion during the period connecting up such subjects as the `noble savage', `going native' and the effects of imperial expansion on both the oppressed and the oppressor. While he brings in his usual cast of characters like the Seekers, Ranters and Quakers and individuals like Abiezer Coppe and others they are more background figures in this exposition. I would suggest that before one tackles this work that a reading of Professor Hill's The World Turned Upside Down is in order.

5 out of 5 stars Indigenous Land Rights in England.......1998-08-11

Christopher Hill analyses the most traumatic event in English history - the loss of Land Rights by a large part of the English population around the seventeenth century. Under the Enclosures and other related Acts, large landowners seized land hitherto under common ownership, forcing the villagers to migrate to shanty towns on the edges of cities, to wait, handily, as a pool of cheap labour for the burgeoning industrial capitalist economy, a picture now all too readily associated with the third world in this century.

The results were very similar to those found today in third world countries where indigenous peoples are deprived of their cultural heritage and their physical means of survival, by the seizing of their garden, grazing, and hunting lands, and Hill follows - as well as the cargo cults of the time - the libertarian reactions to this dispossession: the Diggers, Levellers, pirates (research Burroughs must have drawn on for his fine last book "Ghost of! Chance"), and the very considerable literary rebellion against the beginnings of what, with the final flowering of agribusiness, is today referred to as "The Killing of the Countryside" (Graham Harvey, Cape.)

This reminder of the depth and strength of the English libertarian tradition is extremely timely in a world that again gives us the poor dispossessed and legislated against under Globalisation - the expropriated Third World not just in Bougainville or the Amazon, but in James Kelman's Glasgow or Loach's Liverpool. It is small wonder that we are again seeing Levellers and Diggers. They belong to a long and deeply ingrained English tradition, as does Christopher Hill and his considerable body of work on this period, of which this book is a brilliant, readable and heartfelt synthesis.

                4 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-06-10

I have enjoyed using this labbook all year. It comes up with very creative ways of exploring all aspects of marine biology, including chemical and physical background. Sumich goes through many different phyla, allowing for an in-depth analysis of groups as varied as Echinodermata, Cnideria, and Mammalia. The one thing missing is a Teacher's Guide- it's not always easy to know what answers the book is thinking of when you go through the labs.

I've particularly enjoyed that all the labs are broken up into multiple sections, and subsections. This allows someone with a multitude of resources to do many different types of analysis. A lot of the lab can be followed with some simple specimen collection from the surrounding coast. The lab is also great for someone like myself, teaching in a 2/3rds World school with limited resources, to pick out the parts that are actually possible do do. And there are many parts of the lab that are accessible to the resource challenged.

                              Book Description

Forests throughout India are under threat from modern enterprises such as logging, dams, mines and irrigation schemes, and also from a breakdown in traditional forest-protection systems. Local communities, traditionally dependent on forests, find their livelihoods under chronic strain. This book tells the story of a forest-protection movement, Friends of Trees and Living Beings, in the state of Orissa, which has grown from spontaneous local action in the mid-1970s into a network of forest-management organizations with respected expertise and widespread influence. The authors analyze the successes and weaknesses of the movement, setting its achievements in the context of national, legal, and policy frameworks, and drawing on candid interviews with villagers, activists, staff and forestry officials. They consider the cultural, ethical, and political dimensions of the movement, the tensions inherent in its expansion, and the lessons to be learned by policy makers and funders.
