Thought provoking and a joy to read.......2005-04-30

Nicolas Bouleau's book is a very good read. I dare say there are very few books on Finance like this, on this side of the pond. It is not surprising that the original French version of the book won the "Best financial economics book" prize in 1999.

As Bouleau states in the introduction - this is "..the observations of a mathematics professor from an engineering college, who has worked with banks on new financial products". He starts with the question - Is it really possible to make money in the financial markets ?
Bouleau charts concisely the evolution of Finance and acknowledges the new ideas that allowed the development of the derivatives markets, and which are application of advanced mathematics, appeared in the United States in the 1970s. It was only in the mid 1980s that bankers and mathematicians started coming together in France.
Bouleau then concisely takes the reader through an exposition of the stock market and probability, martingales, Brownian motion and Ito calculus and Hedging.He states - "the way we have approached finance following the mathematical path gives a new perspective, and allows a more open discourse".

With less than 150 pages, including a glossary and bibliography - this is not a text book - but a wonderful set of observations and insights.

The rare earth elements form a fascinating group, resembling each other very closely in both physical and chemical properties. The close similarity of the behaviour of the elements led to difficulties in isolation of the elements in a state of high purity. Now that the separation and purification of these elements have been achieved, the chemistry and the industrial applications of the rare earth elements are drawing the attention of many scientists in the world, especially countries which possess vast reserves of rare earth minerals. Some of the applications of mixed rare earths are as metallurgical additives for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, fluid cracking catalysts, lighter flints, polishing compounds in glasses, carbon arc cores for lighting and hydrogen absorbing alloys for rechargeable batteries. Some of the salient applications of high-purity rare earth elements are cathode ray tubes, automotive catalytic converters, permanent magnets in computer technology and sound systems, lasers, phosphors, electric motors, optical fibres, and possible future applications such as in coloured pigments for plastics and paints, new catalysts, refrigeration systems and solid oxide fuel cells.

In order to use rare earths successfully in various applications, a good understanding of the chemistry of these elements is of paramount importance. Nearly three to four decades have passed since titles such as The Rare Earths edited by F.H. Spedding and A.H. Daane, The chemistry of the Rare Earth Elements by N.E. Topp and Complexes of the Rare Earths by S.P. Sinha were published. There have been many international conferences and symposia on rare earths, as well as the series of volumes entitled Handbook of Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths edited by K.A. Gschneidner and L. Eyring. Thus, there is a need for a new title covering modern aspects of rare earth complexes along with the applications.

The present title consists of twelve chapters. The first chapter is an introduction covering definition, classification, properties, world reserves, methods of processing from ores, methods of separation both classical and modern, and analytical chemistry of rare earths, including classical and modern methods.

The second chapter deals with quantum chemical considerations, s, p, d and f orbitals, electronic configurations, Pauli's principle, spin-orbit coupling and levels, energy level diagrams, Hund's rules, Racah parameters, oxidation states, HSAB principle, coordination number, lanthanide contraction, interconfiguration fluctuations. This is followed by a chapter dealing with methods of determination of stability constants, stability constants of complexes, thermodynamic consideration, double-double effect, inclined w plot, applications of stability constant data.

The fourth chapter deals with complexes of rare earth elements with a variety of complexing agents, such as monocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, polycarboxylic acids like citric, nitrilotriacetic, ethylenediamine tetraacetic; beta diketones, ligands with nitrogen donors, macrocyclic ligands, ligands with sulphur donors, phosphines, cyanate, thiocyanate, selenocyanate, perchlorate, decaborates, acyclic and macrocyclic Schiff's bases, carboranes, selenides and tellurides.

Structural chemistry of lanthanide complexes dealing with low coordination numbers, 6-, -7 and -8 coordination, dodecahedra, square antiprisms, hexagonal bipyramids, cubes and other structures, 9-coordination, high coordination numbers and organometallic structures is discussed in the fifth chapter.

Organometallic complexes such as tris, bis and monocylopentadienyl complexes, cyclooctatetraenyl complexes, cyclopentadienyl-cyclooctatetraenyl complexes, indenyl complexes, fluorenyl complexes, complexes with other aromatic _ ligands, callixerene complexes, NMR spectroscopy of organometallic complexes, vibrational spectra, and catalytic applications form the theme of the sixth chapter.

Kinetics and mechanisms complex formation involving rate expressions, rate laws, dissociative and associative pathways, techniques used in probing reaction mechanisms, crystal field effects are discussed in the following chapter.

Crystal field theory, intensities of 4f-4f transitions, Judd-Ofelt theory of electric-dipole transitions, covalency model of hypersensitivity, dynamic coupling mechanism, solution spectra, spectral data for complexes, solvent effects, fluorescence and photochemistry of lanthanide complexes are dealt with in spectroscopy of lanthanide complexes.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of rare earths involving typical spectra, core levels, splitting due to exchange, spin-orbit coupling, binding energies, states arising due to ionization of fn configuration, interconfiguration fluctuation and surface oxidation phenomena are discussed in the next chapter. The following chapter deals with the important topic of lanthanide NMR shift reagents and their applications in elucidating structures. The penultimate topic deals with ecological, physiological and environmental aspects along with some interesting biological applications.

In the final chapter, applications such as in metallurgy of steels, corrosion inhibition, catalysis, paints, cinema arc carbon and search light electrodes, polishing powders in optics, permanent magnets, ceramic superconductors, lasers, garnet films for magnetic bubble memory applications, nuclear applications, x-ray phosphors for medical radiology, fiber optics, photonics, electronics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) high-tech applications and fuel cells are elucidated.

The authors studied in schools headed by pioneers in rare earth chemistry, have a combined experience of one hundred and fifty years in inorganic chemistry, rare earth complex chemistry, nuclear and radiochemistry of rare earths and supramolecular chemistry. The present monograph is a product of this rich experience.

I Had Such Fun Reading This!.......2004-06-22

What a wonderful find! Very witty with great characters. She had me laughing from the first paragraph -- seriously! I outright roared at the origami exhibit, winced in L.A., gulped when....well, I won't spoil it. Jill is a talented storyteller who will keep you in stitches with her sarcastic one-twos. Much like her other writing, this book puts you right there with the characters, almost as one of them, rather than as a spectator.

The story rolled so well I felt I was watching her share her story, complete with the usual side comments and brief histories that pepper animated conversations. This novel is also visually provocative, but not blatantly so, which would have been dreadful. I read this book in two evenings, with young boys charging about, even, because I didn't want to put it down.

Keely is a character that you want to "wahoo!" for, as she attempts to gracefully glide through such difficult times. The allusions to the time and place of her youth are, trust me, dead-on, another reason I really like this book. The other characters are rife with mannerisms and idiosyncracies enough to fill a Bob-Lo boat.

While I've never actually been there yet, the descriptions in "Flip-Flopped" led me into what I imagine would be real-world Hawaii, off the beaten resort path. Who needs Fabio?! Kam in his surf duds, with the descriptions of this clever authoress, does it for me.

Now, where did I put that Hawaiian music CD? We're having pineapple chicken tonight, btw.

This is a fast, fun, novel that would be perfect anytime you are looking for that somewhat mindless read (vacation, sick in bed, etc). You will laugh guaranteed, and if you are of an age to have any lingering romantic memories about Davy Jones of the Monkees, you will love it.

I bought this book for an easy summer read and ended up finishing the almost 300 page book in 3 days. The characters are great and so realistic you want to keep reading just to know what they do next. I wish this book was just 1 in a series of many.

A pithy little book.......2006-10-06

If you've ever run out of elevation adjustment on your scope at 600 yards, this book is for you. Noblitt and Gabrilska have put together a cogent (pithy) text on taking your heavy-barreled bolt gun, chambered in a suitable long-range cartridge with appropriate optics and getting on paper at 600, 800, or 1000 yards.

The solutions are surprising. Not glass-bedding, not cryo-treatment, not moly coated bullets, not (name the fad), but rather some simple and elegant recommendations to create a long-range system--an adequate rifle, the right cartridge, the right scope, the right bases and rings, the right zero or zeros. It's amazing what you can do even with a 1MOA rig, if all these factors are working together. I've discovered some of these techniques after much money and time at the high-power range and in open country. If I'd only known about this book 10 years ago.

The data tables in the back are worth every penny. They are generally reliable. Of course, you'll need to create/tailor your own tables using your field trajectory data, but that's the joy of shooting and discovering how your rifle and cartridge perform under different environmental conditions.

Almost half of this book is balistics tables, probably for cartridge and bullet combinations you are not shooting.

The rest of the book is mostly geared to the beginning shooter, but the information is not very good. For instance, the authors suggest using scope bases with the built in windage adjustments. The authors must have about zero experience with these bases, which are known for unintentionally allowing your zero to shift. I don't know of any military or lawenforcment tactical shooter, or any civilian long range shooter using the scope bases and rings suggested in the book. The best shooters are using solid steel bases secured to the rifle with over sized screws.

Also, there is no up to date information on long range rifles, gunsmithing, or modern cartridge and bullet design.

A waste of time and money.

Jim has (almost) hit the nail on the head - for the "not so experienced" long range shooter there are however one or two pearls contained in the text. Would I buy this again? maybe, but not at this price.

I have to agree with Mr. Sonnenberg's review of this book. I think it's geared mainly for the beginner shooter. I also think it's over-priced since half the book consists of ballistic tables that I will never use. A serious shooter other than a beginner should already have their own ballistic charts for their rifles.

An essential reference on European Royal lines of descent........2000-12-08

This book is very unique. It combines history, geneology and heraldry. Historically each royal family is described country by country. It is probably the only book published that combines individual coats of arms-beginning in the 11th century-with the geneology of the royal houses of Europe. The 150 tables combine these two elements showing the hearldic shields in full color of many of the family members. The book covers the past 1000 years of the royal families of Europe descent and makes some references to earlier time and leaders, such as the Franks and Charlemagne. The book has been a great help to my research on the European Royal Houses, and helps indicate the inter-relatedness of the princely families of Europe. It has some tables showing such relationships and connections between the noble families. It has impressive detail considering the extensive scope of the book and serves as an excellent base for more detailed and extensive research on particular individuals and families. It is a well developed book and useful to quickly trace the descent and hearldry of the European Royals.

Not just another royalty book.......2003-01-01

"The Royal 100: A Who's Who of the First 100 People in Line of Succession to the British Throne" combines a text by Alan Hamilton with many, many photographs. The book's subtitle pretty much describes it perfectly. The book is divided into five sections that reflect the genealogical interconnections of the British royal family. The sections cover the House of Windsor and its descendants; the Norwegian royal house (yes, one of them could inherit the British crown if some massive disaster wiped out all the Windsors and descendants); the Romanian royal family; the Yugoslavian royal family; and the Russian imperial family.

The interesting introduction has an overview of the British royal family and the principles of royal succession. The text overall is both informative and entertining. I loved the many pictures of the royals and their relatives: at work, at play, in formal looking poses, etc. There are wedding pics, baby pics, and pics of royals in the fancy military uniforms that seem to never go out of fashion. Mini-biographies (very brief for the more obscure individuals) accompany the pictures. Along the way are some marvelous images and curious (occasionally even scandalous!) facts.

This book isn't going to change your life but it's an interesting and easy read. The kind of book you can pick up and read again and again. It's funny. I liked it. A good book to give to an questioning teenager. Can cows walk down stairs is a shelf filler, but it's interesting.

Not all the facts are, well..facts. It claims that ducks have no echo, but any Mythbusters fan would know that's not true. It does have an echo, however it's so silent that human ears cannot hear it. And I would claim that the buyers of this book would probably also be interested in Mythbusters!
