More of a Primer than a guide on How-To.......2006-05-14

Based on the editorial reviews I had high hopes for this book. However it is more of a primer discussing some of the issues that surround the topic of shared services than how-to. The really tough decisions involving shared services are how to evaluate the potential programs to take on, how to integrate and manage the portfolio across the functional silos (i.e., finance, HR, real estate, supply chain, and IT), how to govern the shared services organization, and how to balance customer satisfaction with cost efficiencies. Unfortunately this book is not helpful in dealing with these issues.

So if you are a newbie trying to find out what shared services is all about you may find this book helpful. But if you are a manager who has been charged with implimenting a shared services function, there isn't much help here.

Good overview of business models.......2003-11-07

I'm an MBA student and picked up this book to learn more about shared services. Turns out there's a lot to know. But what I came away with was a better appreciation for the varioius business models out there. The book does a good job of comparing and contrasting the various centralized and decentralized ways of conducting business in corporate america, using real-world companies as examples. In short, I was pleasantly surprised. It'll stay on my bookshelf.

The objective in initiating this series in 1980 was to provide an in-depth review of advances made in the understanding key aspects of surface chemistry and physics through the application of new techniques to the study of well-defined surfaces. Since then the field of surface science has greatly matured, and further important techniques, particularly scanning probe microscopies, have been successfully assimilated into the applications armoury of the surface scientist.

The present volume is a series of timely reviews by many of the current experts in the field of phase transitions and adsorbate-induced surface restructuring. No aspect of the science of solid surfaces can be fully understood without accounting for the structural diversity of surfaces, now revealed in atomic detail by techniques based on diffraction and scanning probe microscopies. For example, it is now clear to those working in heterogeneous catalysis that adsorbate-induced restructuring of surfaces can play a critical role in phenomena such as bistability, kinetic oscillations, and promotion and poisoning. Structural transitions at surfaces can also play a key role in determining the electronic properties of surfaces, reviewed in volume 5.

Office Life.......2005-09-06

This book very accurately covers that 'life's a routine' phase that every office worker hits at some point (normally in their 30's). This is the perfect brother of a book to 'You Are Here (Steve Horsfall), encapsulating that moment when we wonder where life is taking us. Set in a London Law firm but it could be anywhere and any profession (it's a world away from John Grisham). Loved the relaying of a drinking and girl chasing existance. The writing is fresh and quirky too.

pelton is at times redundant, but the book moves along w/ just the right momentum to keep your attention. before his book, i had never even heard of Bougainville. this is a good read to store more detailed info. on the 3 places explored by pelton. at the very least, you'll feel smarter than you did before you picked up this book.

Good book but..........2006-12-27

where are the pictures? He goes to all these places, meets all these different personalities, admits that he has a camera and where are they? Now I don't need pictures in a book for me to read it but his stories I think would be enhanced with photos of his journeys.

The book is good and is part adventure/travel/survival/third world political science. In his travels, Mr. Pelton does not seem to take any easy route to go anywhere. He gets smuggled into Chechnya and tracks down a rebel leader on his own choice. The rebels who are known for kidnapping foriegners and journalists are meanwhile being tracked and bombed by the Russian military. He goes to Bougainville when everyone including the people that live there tell him not too. Why? I think because as he feels that there is a story to tell and it usually is not the "popular" one fed to most news agencies. Case in point is his Chechnya visit, where again he chooses to go to the "terrorists", not to give them a voice, but to get the unpopular side of the story (especially when considering the lack of freedom of the press in Russia). It is an objective look at the history of the Chechnya/Russian relationship and the situation where atrocities are seem to be committed by both sides. He even "interviews" a captured Russian soldier whose handlers casually tell Mr. Pelton he will most likely be executed the next day. The part on Sierra Leone is equally impressive, probably because there has been more press about the atrocities and violence there.

So as long as Mr. Pelton feels the need to travel to different "worlds gone mad", writing the about the lesser known histories and/or conflicts, he will most likely have me as a reader of his books.

A must of the armchair traveller...........2004-03-27

Not exactly LP, but it tells stories of two places that been
extremely dangerous and one that still is.in SL conflict(the hunter) was fuelled by greed, diamonds made many Lebanese come to SL and
the become rich on trading, MEA (middle east airlines) flew
in several of their big passenger planes to rescue it's citizens, SL
isn't a tourist resort nowadays like The Gambia today, but
still not extremely dangerous.
Bougainville (the Heaven) was Oz mining company property until the fighting

drove them of the island, PNG gov tried to recruit SA mercs to
"conquer" the island and start mining again, but it failed badly.
Chechenya (the Hammer) was also about greed, in this case oil-pipelines from
Azerbadjian. The late Chechen leader Dubajev was a former Soviet
airforce general that was married to an Estonian lady, he stopped
a carnage in the Baltic states planned by hard-liners. The Russians was later upset by the Estonians because the gave away
3 plane loads of roubles to the Chechens (arranged by Georgia) that the Russians refused to take as payment for oil deliveries, the money came when Estonia changed currency from the Soviet rouble to the Estonian Kroon.
3 stories about where everything gone haywire, but in two cases
the violence have halted, at least temporary...

In 1942, while living in Mexico City, the cosmopolite and Austrian expatriate Wolfgang Paalen (1905â€“1959) founded a new periodical devoted to the arts, which he named DYN (greek), â€œthe possibleâ€. Paalen invited writers AnaÃ¯s Nin and Henry Miller, photographers Manuel Alvarez Bravo and Eva Sulzer, anthropologists and ethnologists Alfonso Caso and Miguel Covarrubias, and artists Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Robert Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock to contribute. Articles by Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell, AndrÃ© Breton, Octavio Paz, and Gordon Onslow Ford also appeared in subsequent issues of DYN. Only five issues of DYN were published before the periodical came to an abrupt end in 1944. These journals have since served as inspiration to a small yet influential group of modern artists and thinkers. This facsimile reprint presents exact reproductions of all five issues of DYN in one compact volume.
