Book Description
The role of working memory in language processing has become the focus of contemporary debates in psycholinguistics. These debates concern which aspects of language processing are vulnerable to working memory limitations, how working memory is best measured, and whether compensatory processes can offset working memory limitations.
Age-comparative studies are particularly relevant to this debate for several reasons: difficulties with language and communication are frequently mentioned by older adults and signal the onset of Alzheimer's dementia and other pathologies associated with age; older adults commonly experience working memory limitations that affect their ability to perform everyday activities; the rapid aging of the United States population has forced psychologists and gerontologists to examine such effects of aging on cognition, drawing many investigators to the study of cognitive aging.
The chapters in
Constraints on Language: Aging, Memory and Grammar explore cognitive aging, working memory, and new models of grammar using a variety of methodological approaches including psycholinguistic investigations of comprehension and production, psychometric studies of reading and individual differences, neuroimaging studies of linguistic function, and neurolinguistic investigations of pathologies of language.

Book Description
Written by specialist and regional contributors, this invaluable book provides an integrated, up-to-date, geographical assessment of land degradation in the world's Mediterranean regions.
Land degradation is the alteration of the natural (or biophysical) environment by human actions, causing detrimental effects to the vegetation, soils, landforms, water and ecosystems. Part One of this book comprises a brief geography of the Mediterranean climate regions - the Mediterranean basin, California, central Chile, the Southwest Cape and Southern Australia, providing a context for Parts Two and Three. The second section discusses the nature, extent, history, causes and implications of land degradation in the regions. Major problems include soil, vegetation and water degradation, fire, drought, flooding and sedimentation. Historical and contemporary human responses to these problems are also considered and at times become part of the problem. Solutions - actual and potential - are evaluated in the third section and include those dealing with animals, cultivation, horticulture, engineering-type practices, agroforestry, whole farm planning, integrated catchment management and regional planning.
Throughout there is an emphasis on the distinctive nature of the Mediterranean-type environments - especially the seasonally, hot, dry climates, the species-rich and highly inflammable vegetation, steep topography and coastal orientations - and the ways in which these environments interact with human populations with their contrasting histories and cultures to result in a special set of environmental problems and response.

Book Description
Fiber Crystal Growth from the Melt reviews the growth, modelling, characterization and application of single crystal fibers are reviewed. Due to their very large length-to-diameter ratio together with perfect crystallographic structure and chemical homogeneity, such fibers have mechanical and physical properties that approach the theoretical values. Fukuda explains how their ultra-high strength enables their application as reinforcing agents in structural components. And he elucidates how and why fiber crystals are particularly well suited for wave guiding, tunable narrow-band filters and nonlinear optics and for the generation of green, blue and violet wavelenghts, and also as micro lasers and laser modulators. The book is suitable for specialists and students in the fields of materials science, crystal growth, physics, chemistry, crystallography, optics, mechanics and engineering.

Book Description
Bestselling author RonnElmore pens a powerful novel of a psychotherapist struggling to reconcile the memory of his deceased wife and their time together with the new doors God seems to be opening for his future. Thirty-something psychotherapist Dr.Dwayne Grandison is still recovering from the loss of his wife when ex-TV actress Nina Jordan enters his life. A former wild child, Nina is now a responsible parent and member of his brother's church. When Dwayne and Nina meet for the first time, there is an instant electricity, but Dwayne is still not ready to begin any kind of social life. So it is a big surprise toNina when Dwayne takes up with Minister Beverlyn Boudreaux, a superstar on the Evangelistic Performer's circuit. Then suddenly, as scandal rocks Dwayne's world, it is the faith of one of these women that opens his eyes and his heart.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, Entertaining and Insightful.......2007-02-27
Anointed therapist, author and inspirational speaker, Ronn Elmore gives readers a literary backstage pass to the world of the "business" of Christian concerts and mega conferences. One can't help but conjure images of real-life personalities when reading about the larger-than-life Beverlyn Bourdeaux, her self-serving uncle/business manager, L.W. and the child star turned ministry leader, Nina Jordan. Elmore has the artistic saavy not to lead readers down to happily-ever-afterville; instead he infused just enough drama with just enough joy to make the story one that readers can relate to, and be inspired by.
Commendable Effort.......2006-01-26
Psychotherapist Ronn Elmore normally uses his relationship counseling expertise to write bestselling non-fiction books (How to Love a Black Man and How to Love a Black Woman). However, with Mercy, Mercy Me he takes a leap of faith and delves into the fiction genre. Again, relying upon his professional knowledge, Elmore creates realistic fictional characters-- characters who are experiencing difficulty in their personal relationships.
A prime example is Dr. Dwayne Grandison, a successful psychologist in Los Angeles. Although his career is soaring to new heights, it's not a profession he necessarily wants. In fact, it's his wife who pushes him to pursue clinical psychology. Dwayne actually has a yearning to help people, perhaps by ministry, like his late father and his brother Lafayette. But when his wife and unborn child die in a tragic accident, Dwayne's career is the least of his worries as he mourns and wallows in uncertainty. Suddenly life brings new opportunities, but will they be blessings or burdens?
First, his brother asks him to run a new men's ministry program at church with the help of Nina Jordan, a former television actress. While everyone knows about her previous battle with drugs, she has a secret that has yet to be revealed. Then, there's mega-evangelist/singer Beverlyn Boudreaux, who hand picks Dwayne to host a talk show on her new network. Although he is not the type that enjoys being in the limelight, he accepts the job offer. In addition, he is committed to his practice and to volunteering with the men's ministry. Realizing there are not enough hours in the day for all three of his commitments, he is forced to make choice.
Meanwhile romantic sparks begin to fly and he finds himself attracted to both Nina and Beverlyn, but again, he has a choice to make. The decision is made easier when he gets caught in an ugly scandal and one woman remains by his side.
Elmore's fiction debut is commendable, but it is not quite worthy of a bestseller status. The story started with a powerful prologue full of suspense and intrigue, but the excitement was tapered off with slow, uneventful chapters. It took a while to get to the actual plot, which was your basic love triangle.
While the author perfected the main character, others such as Sean, Dwayne's best friend, were not developed well. Elmore gave readers a true sense of Dwayne's profession, but included far too much dialogue from patient sessions, which detracted from the story.
The most interesting aspect of the novel was the behind-the-scenes look at television evangelists and the realistic portrayal of the business side including the temptation of money, glitz and glamour. The author also successfully presented spiritual messages, without being preachy, which is a definite plus. All in all, I'm sure fans of Elmore will love Mercy, Mercy Me.
alright.......2005-03-15
Too many typo's. I thought they were supposed to have people edit these books. It's just ridiculous.
DISAPPOINTING.......2005-01-07
I waited and waited until I purchased this book to be certain that I wanted it because other reviews that I had read were not favorable, but like a fool, I purchased it anyhow. But thank goodness that I purchased it used or else I would have really been aggravated. Although the premise of the book was a good idea about people that allow their "material possessions" to take their focus off of important people and things, mainly GOD; the book was not good to me. After I got past all the typos (which were vast in number in the book with the black cover), then I was able to better understand the book. It also was boring for the first couple of chapters, as well as predictable. My mother and father were married for 45 years before he died and she did not allow her grieving to go on that long because she truly believed that "God heals all wounds", so his lamenting over a wife that only had $$$ signs in her eyes from the very beginning and only was out for herself was beyond my belief. I will not be recommending this book to anyone, and even my 17-year old daughter told me that she had NEVER seen me take longer than 1 or 2 days to read a book. But I refused to go on to another book until I read this one, which caused me to get 4 weeks behind in reading a really good book, which only took me a day after finishing this one. If you want to read this, borrow someone's, DO NOT PURCHASE IT!
Ronn Elmore Did a Great Job!.......2004-03-15
Sucessful therapist Dwayne Grandison was still mourning the loss of his wife from a car accident when his brother, Pastor Lafayette Grandison approaches him about working with a new ministry at New Covenant Assembly. The position involves working closely with counselor Nina Jordan, an ex child star. Nina has successfully founded a female counseling program at the church and needs Dr. Grandison's expertise for the new male counseling program.
Approximately around the same time, Dr. Grandison is recruited by well-known evangelist Beverlyn Boudreaux for a talk show host position on her brand new Christian television network. Sparks fly as Dwayne works with both women in two very different atmospheres. Beverlyn's world is glitzy and glamorous, while working with Nina is more laid back and in the trenches of the church.
As the talk show becomes increasingly successful, Dwayne gets caught up in the traps of fame. He also grows closer to Beverlyn who reminds him more and more of his deceased wife. Unfortunately somebody very close to Beverylyn does not appreciate the budding relationship and proceeds to destroy Dr. Grandison's reputation with false rumors. Dr. Grandison will soon find which one of the two women will stand by his side as everything falls apart.
As the first novel by real-life therapist Ronn Elmore, this was a pretty good read. Dwayne's story felt authentic especially during the counseling sessions. Also while the mega minstry represented was fictional, the glimpse behind the scenes was informative. Even when doing God's work, people can easily get caught up along the wrong path --- the one leading to destruction.
Customer Reviews:
An Enchanting, Fun Read.......2004-01-24
In this delightful romp through the daily life of a small-town Southern woman, Margaret A. Graham gets a chance to have some fun with her characters while poking a bit of fun at the church --- something I happen to adore. Esmeralda is an immediately likable character, an older woman who does not abide nonsense and takes utter pleasure in dispensing her always practical advice to others, even those "others" she knows will never heed her counsel. Mainly, of course, church folk.
But, as Graham wisely knows, it's those very same church folk who will be the ones to rally to support people in need and distress, as the church's Willing Workers do throughout --- helping those who grieve, those who are saddled with overwhelming responsibilities, those who need a warm casserole as much as a warm hug. Esmeralda finds herself on the receiving end of their generous gifts of time and food when she assumes responsibility for a woman dying of AIDS.
Throughout the book, Esmeralda writes letters to her lifelong friend Beatrice, a literary device Graham uses skillfully. Through the letters back and forth, we gain greater insight into what makes Esmeralda tick, and through her friend we eventually see a flawed aspect of her nature.
Anyone who has lived in the South, the real South, is bound to be amused by Graham's ear for the "language" --- the way real Southerners express their thoughts, their choice of words, and their charming way of simply making up words. Thus Esmeralda advises Beatrice that the "onliest doctor" she needs is Dr. Scholl, seeks out a "notary republic", and quotes Charles "Splurgeon" throughout. The book also has some hilarious moments, as when Esmeralda must make up a name for the dying Hispanic woman and can only think of "Carmen Miranda" (which admittedly may not be funny to those too young to remember her), or when she tries to resolve an immigration problem, gets shuffled from one office to another in the courthouse, and finally takes it upon herself to enter a door marked Problem Resolution Office, only to discover 45 minutes later that it's an IRS office.
And Graham's use of imagery shines throughout the book: "Her pauses are like when the washing machine stops then starts up again," Esmeralda says about Beatrice. Graham has most assuredly done her share of laundry, because only someone who has listened out for the end of the cycle countless times can relate to the way those pauses sound like a person holding her breath. "If Clara can't climb down your family tree to the bare roots, you don't get no clean bill of health," she says of another church member.
But there are some missteps. Esmeralda uncharacteristically comments on the number of Christians killed and tortured around the world, something that doesn't sound like her but instead sounds like the author trying to educate her audience. Then there's the mandatory salvation scene, in which one character practically grills another to find out if she led a woman to the Lord in precisely the "right" way. That one really grated on me.
Finally, toward the end of the book, Esmeralda convinces a godly man named Carl that he should cut what she calls his "pigtail" (a ponytail, maybe?) because no woman would want a man with hair like that, and, as she tells him, "it don't look right for a Christian man to go around looking like a leftover hippie." Here's a kind, godly man, but he isn't quite up to snuff as a Christian example because he wears his hair wrong? I hope not. And I suspect there are plenty of women out there, even Esmeralda's age, who would gladly accept a ponytail on a thoughtful, caring man.
Despite those and other minor flaws, what it all comes down to is this: MERCY ME is an enchanting, fun read, and Graham is an author to watch. Let's hope she has more in mind for Esmeralda.
Try again........2003-12-28
I'm sorry but I got the feeling that this book was a rip-off of Ann B. Ross's Miss Julia stories. Both Esmerelda and Miss Julia are southern matrons with the conviction that they know what is best for all they meet. Both are basically good at heart but Esmerelda comes out on the short end of any comparison I can think of with Miss Julia. I can usually trust a consensus of Amazon reviews but this time I was mistaken.
A Delightful Book.......2003-12-10
This book was such a fun book to read. Esmeralda was an elderly character with a lot of spunk, who also went through some rough times with her husband when he came back from the war. It was so easy to love her. There was a lot of humor in this book--the church ladies following Horace to make sure the mule got a proper burial, Esmeralda giving dating advice to her friend, Beatrice, the church ladies all picking out a casket together, Maria's fake name. But with the humor, I saw a lot of "what would Jesus do" stuff spread throughout the book in a very subtle manner--Esmeralda taking in Maria when she was so sick, Esmeralda telling Beatrice to go out of her way to be friendly to her obnoxious neighbors, Esmeralda telling Beatrice to make sure that Carl is a godly man, Esmeralda being so kind to Horace when he was so spiteful towards her in the beginning of the book.
You will love this book and the characters.
Enjoyed the book.......2003-11-04
I found Mercy Me to be a delightful, engaging tale that was hard to put down. The characters were well developed and the story interesting. Not the best book I have read this year, but worth reading.
Excellent!.......2003-05-23
I "enjoyed meeting" all the characters, they were very real, interesting and most of them were quite likable! I don't believe Esmeralda will ever allow her life to become boring. She may be a widow living alone but she does not allow herself to become "self-absorbed." I am hoping for a sequel or maybe even a series. I didn't really want to put the book down until I finished it. The author gives you a sense that "something is going to happen" but I was still surprised at what transpired in this quaint little southern town. A great book!
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive.......2007-08-26
In the beginning, the book started off written in a conversational mode... you follow this college girl faced with an impending draft, and the questions she asks and those brought up by the professor and students in her class on the subject.
I had the impression that the whole book would follow this method, which is not all that bad (see "Why Don't We Go To War" by Susan Landis), but after the intro and chapter one it dealves off into a comprehensive explanation on just-unjust war terminology/history. The final chapters review the peace movement by various spanish monks/priests that spoke out against slavery and American conquest: This seems to be the only part of the book that is not fluid with everything else, it's great to know, and does belong in the "Total War" section as he rightly placed it, but unlike the masterful transition he maintains throughout the book this topic seems a bit more abrupt.
The conclusion is a very good recap with up to date peace roles in the world currently facing the threat of terrorism.
His discussion on peace and war movements in the Middle Ages come a close second to that of Ronald Musto's "The Catholic Peace Tradition". The section is very readable and enlightening and pretty much makes the book. A very good explanation of Just War, Holy War and Total War entwines successfully with this part. The Total War section is so eerily familiar with today's "War on Terror", and the pitfalls are made clear in a historical, rational and Biblical sense (what a great combo eh?).
Let's say you are interested in studies on nonviolence or biblical pacifism, this book would probably not make a good primer, for that I suggest various readings from Bainton, Wink or McSorley... instead here you will find greater depth on the subject without getting in too much detail. It's a nice size being under 200 pages, with enough info for writing any report or making good conversation with others.
Not a good defense of the pacifist paradigm.......2006-06-29
Overall this book does a good job at examining different ways of looking
at armed conflict within the context of Christianity and the general
human condition. The method the author uses to describe varying points
of view is useful, thought provoking and provides some insights that
perhaps would be new to most readers.
However, the author's biases are very apparent in the construction and
content of the book. As an example, when the author talks about the
biblical support for Just War Theory, he shows both pro and con sides of
the applicable Biblical interpretations. However, when addressing the
Pacifist model he does not give the same care.
In short, this book is a call to the pacifist model of conflict
resolution.
However, it does not adequately defend the pacifist paradigm. In order
to make a solid argument, the book should have addressed the key topic
of pacifism's difficulty in providing tangible results in relieving the
affliction of others. (Rare example - ending Apartheid in South
Africa).
This topic is especially relevant today when looking at the situation in
Darfur.
Easy to Understand and Follow.......2006-04-11
This book is easy to understand and will make you second guess whether or not War is always the answer. As a student this book helped make reading easy and allowed me to understand some of the deeper and more involved concepts. You won't find yourself bored or struggling to get through the pages. The book flows so well from one chapter to another. As a student I must say this isn't my particular field of interest, yet I had to read the entire book and I am glad I did. This book opened my eyes to war and the Christian Conscience. I believe this book can make even the most pro-war advocates consider other options and methods to solve disputes. Dr. Fahey is brilliant. Just as a side note, his personal demeanor is as gentle and kind as the underlying message behind his book.
Great Book for Anyone Who Cares about War and Peace.......2006-02-24
I now understand why the question of war and the Christian conscience has been and is such a struggle. Even though I converted from hawk to dove during the Vietnam War, I never knew all the history and implications of the church's varied positions on this issue.
I'm now using this book as a resource at workshops I conduct about my own book, "Patriotism, Peace and Vietnam: A Memoir."
Thank you, Dr. Fahey, for an important, informative, yet easy book to read and digest!
Finest Resource on War and Conscience.......2006-02-20
Joseph Fahey has written perhaps the most useful resource for students, teachers and parents as they grapple with the demands of Christian conscience on matters of war, peace and military service in the 21st century.
Far from being a dry, scholarly study of historical approaches to Christian conscience and war, Fahey presents an imaginary "case study," with the U.S. president calling for a resumption of mandatory conscription (the draft), with no exemptions: women as well as men will be called up for duty, as will all college students when they turn 19 years old.
One student, "Nicole," serves as the central character facing the questions that are raised as she contemplates, for the first time in her life, possible service in the armed forces. An initial discussion in the classroom leads to several perspectives upon which to base one's moral consideration of military service: Culture; Duty; Egoism; Gender; Religion; Science; and Utilitarianism. This leads to an exploration of how these perspectives contribute to the formation of conscience. The class then -- throughout the remainder of the book -- examines four approaches to war that have developed over the centuries as Christians considered what to do: Pacifism or Nonviolence; Just or Limited War; Total or Holy War; World Community or Global Citizenship.
Fahey does a masterful job of exploring the rich traditions of pacifism and just/unjust war, along with the less-discussed "tradition" of holy war or Crusade. His consideration of the new category, World Community, is particularly relevant in our interconnected, globalized world --a world increasingly familiar to young people.
Each chapter reviews biblical, historical, philosophical and actual practice of each tradition, with a neat summary of major points of the chapter at the end, followed by an "assignment" to write a letter to "Nicole" in an ongoing "conversation" with her about what is being learned. Each chapter ends with a set of recommended readings for further research. The book will enable young people (or not-so-young people) to decide "where do you stand?" regarding war in this new century.
Perhaps the only thing lacking in the book is an easily accessible list of websites of organizations that could provide up-to-date information on the draft and conscientious objection. With the knowledge and familiarity of today's youth with search engines on the Internet, however, this should not prove to be much of a stumbling block!
Finally, although the content of the book is perhaps most useful for young Catholics, all Christians and people of other religious traditions will also find this publication helpful in wrestling with the common issues of conscience and war.
