Book Description
Although the potential for immunomodulation has been recognized for many years there has been an explosion of data in this field with relevance especially to the treatment of chronic airway diseases. Most of the work in this field has been conducted by Japanese investigators but in the last decade there has been a body of work outside of Japan that supports and enhances these findings. The book covers basic research like effects on bacteria, anti-inflammatory and mucoregulatory effects, but also clinical results with up-to-date information for the use of such medications to potentially treat diseases as diverse as chronic airway diseases, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer.
The volume is intended for pulmonary physicians, researchers in inflammation research, and pharmaceutical companies interested in the development of such agents. It provides background information for the clinician as well as in depth exploration of cutting edge science.

Book Description
This unique volume contains papers based on presentations and discussions at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Massive Rock Slope Failure; New Models for Hazard Assessment held in Celano, Italy in June 2002. 32 papers by 64 engineers, geologists, and geomorphologists from 16 countries address the issue of landslides from massive rock slope failure and associated phenomena (landslide tsunamis and landslide dams). Authors include some of the world’s leading authorities on the subject.
Amongst the thematic topics discussed are global frequency, impacts on society, analysis of initial rock slope failure, monitoring of rock slope movement, analysis and modeling of post-failure behaviour, volcanic landslides, and influences of massive rock slope failure on the geomorphological evolution of mountain regions. Regional contributions include reports on rockslides and rock avalanches in Norway, western Canada, the Andes of Argentina, the Karakoram Himalaya, the European Alps, the Appennines, and the mountains of Central Asia.
Rockslides and rock avalanches in the Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union are discussed in detail for the first time in an English-language book. These landslides include the 1911 Usoi rockslide, that dammed 75 km-long Lake Sarez, and the 1949 Khait rock avalanche that may have killed up to 28,000 people. Both landslides were earthquake-triggered and both are located in Tajikistan. An additional highlight is a detailed description and analysis of large-scale artificial rock avalanches triggered by underground nuclear explosions during the testing programme of the former Soviet Union.
The volume is a contribution to defining the state-of-the-art in hazard assessment for massive rock slope failure and to global knowledge of the occurrence of landslides from massive rock slope failure in time and space. It is dedicated to the memory of noted Italian engineering geologist Professor Edoardo Semenza (1927-2002).

Book Description
In recent years there have been exciting developments in techniques for producing multilayered structures of different materials, often with thicknesses as small as only a few atomic layers. These artificial structures, known as superlattices, can either be grown with the layers stacked in an alternating fashion (the periodic case) or according to some other well-defined mathematical rule (the quasiperiodic case). This book describes research on the excitations (or wave-like behavior) of these materials, with emphasis on how the material properties are coupled to photons (the quanta of the light or the electromagnetic radiation) to produce mixed waves called polaritons.
· Clear and comprehensive account of polaritons in multilayered structures
· Covers both periodic and quasiperiodic superlattices
· Careful attention to theoretical developments and tools
· Invaluable guide for researchers in this field
· Shows developments from the basics to advanced topics

Book Description
The only thing Shane cares about is leaving: Usually on a Greyhound bus, and right before his life falls apart again. Just like he planned. But this time its complicated: theres a sadistic corporate climber who thinks shes his girlfriend, a rent-subsidized affair with his landlords wife, and the bizarrely appealing deaf assistant to Shanes cosmically unstable dentist. When one of the women is murdered, and Shane is the only suspect who doesnt care enough to act like he didnt do it, the question becomes just how hell clear the good name he never had and doesnt particularly want: his own.
Customer Reviews:
A funny book and great time waster.......2007-10-09
I actually picked this book up at the local bookstore. I read about 2/3 of it and was well on my way to finish the book inside the store. However I liked the book so much that I bought it to encourage the writer.
This book is an interesting novel on the slacker life. Of course much of it is about nothing as some previous reviewer already stated. However it is really entertaining. The book is not trying to teach or preach something, it's main purpose is to entertain you through a smoke mirror of the main character. In that respect it is wildly successful. Since nowadays movies cost $10, this is definitely more than worth the price.
A Hilarious Debut Novel.......2007-09-16
If you were born to Generation X, and you're tired of the everyday banality of modern life, get this book. If you hate corporate culture and their misguided stupidly evil empire imposed on your life, get this book. If you feel a twinge of guilt looking at a childhood photograph, realizing you failed all the hopes and dreams of the bright-eyed kid looking back at you, get this book. If you need something to read after your fourth scotch and water, get this book.
If you hate the way things are but are too lazy to change them, get this book.
Exuberance in Apathy.......2007-09-09
To give this book anything less than 5 stars is nothing short of a travesty. While Neilan does share some similarities to Chuck Palahniuk, Neilan's work is by no means unoriginal (as other reviews may lead you to believe). "Apathy" is an absolute work of genius. Those who say differently are simply not able to comprehend the brilliant humor that resides in one of the greatest comedic works of the last 5 years, but one can not blame the naysayers. They have just trusted Oprah too long as a credible source of literary critique.
Aptly Titled.......2007-09-06
Memo to Paul:
When writing a book, it is fundamentally essential for the author to make his/her protagonist at least superficially likeable--or interesting. No need to thank me.
Reading APATHY AND OTHER SMALL VICTORIES is akin to swallowing air. Nada. Granted, Neilan's bizarre musings make for some eyebrow-raising passages, and much of the story is funny, but at the end of the day I walked away from this book feeling completely underwhelmed. A story about a chronic underachiever who cares about nothing and lives for nothing ultimately comes to the grand total of: Nothing.
Neilan has talent, to be sure, and I hope he takes that talent to the next level by creating a solid, edgy comedy that makes the reader crave for more. But APATHY. . .I started this book with giddy high hopes. . .and finished it feeling as passionless as I've ever felt about a book in all my days. And that, my friends, that is apathy.
--D. Mikels, Author, Walk-On
Hilarious.......2007-08-20
This is a great book. The story is put together as you experience the protagonist's attitude towards life. This main character, Shane, is refreshingly honest. The author condenses Shane's views on life into great statements, musings, descriptions, and actions. There are interesting characters and plotlines. I laughed aloud often while reading this book, & I couldn't put it down until I finished it.
Customer Reviews:
A hilarious yet touching debut..........2007-07-13
...and one that'll hit far too close to home for anyone who's got an unsatisfying office job. The cover quote puts this quirky little tome somewhere between 'A Confederacy of Dunces' and the screenplay for 'Office Space,' and that's really not far off the mark. It may seem like territory that's already been well-trodden by that movie (not to mention Dilbert and an uncountable number of sitcoms). But Neilan handles it with the perfect jaded cynicism to suit the title, the brilliant feel for humorous exaggeration that David Sedaris has never found, and a cast of unstable neurotics (just believable enough to be spooky) that could have come from Chuck Palahniuk's leftovers.
Underneath everything there's a bittersweet humanity that could only be shown in such sharp relief from a protagonist that's completely unemotional. (Angry female: "You pretend to care about other people but you don't." Shane: "I never pretended to care.") Shane really isn't a likable guy, but he's juuuuust easy enough to identify with that he becomes the most sympathetic element in an environment of sadists and drones. The plot is a doozy - part cynical commentary, part murder mystery, part bizarro freakshow - but believability really isn't the biggest thing when there are such insightful laughs on every page.
So yeah - this is a fun read. True, it's overpriced for how short it is and it could have used proofreading by someone who knows how to use commas. (And occasionally grammar. "We laid on the bed"? Somebody wasn't doing their job.) But still, it's worth the time if this description above appeals to you. Here's hoping Neilan gets even better with the next one.

Stephen E. Ambrose combines history and journalism to describe how American GIs battled their way to the Rhineland. He focuses on the combat experiences of ordinary soldiers, as opposed to the generals who led them, and offers a series of compelling vignettes that read like an enterprising reporter's dispatches from the front lines. The book presents just enough contextual material to help readers understand the big picture, and includes memorable accounts of the Battle of the Bulge and other events as seen through the weary eyes of the men who fought in the foxholes. Highly recommended for fans of Ambrose, as well as all readers interested in understanding the life of a 1940s army grunt. A sort of sequel to Ambrose's bestselling 1994 book D-Day, Citizen Soldiers is more than capable of standing on its own.
Book Description
Citizen Soldiers opens on June 7, 1944, on the Normandy beaches, and ends on May 7, 1945. From the high command (including Eisenhower, Bradley, and Patton) on down to the enlisted men, Stephen E. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides who were there. He recreates the experiences of the individuals who fought the battles, the women who served, and the Germans who fought against us.
Ambrose reveals the learning process of a great army -- how to cross rivers, how to fight in snow or hedgerows, how to fight in cities, how to coordinate air and ground campaigns, how to fight in winter and on the defensive, how citizens become soldiers in the best army in the world -- all from the point of view of the men.
A masterful biography of the U.S. Army in the European Theater Of Operations, Citizen Soldiers provides a compelling account of the extraordinary stories of ordinary men in their fight for democracy.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Oral History of the GI in Europe.......2007-10-16
Ambrose's book takes up where his prequel left off - the battle of Normandy. He continues their saga as they battle their way into the heartland of Germany. Especially riveting are the conditions under which the GIs fought during the battle of the Bulge. Also, what makes this a riveting read is that he uses oral histories of the GIs, both American and German. Secondly, Ambrose does not belittle the German effort as he did in his June 6, 1944 book. In Citizen Soldiers, he gives the Germans their rightly due as fighting soldiers and indicates they had it just as rough in the field as the Americans.
It was also interesting to read how the Germans believed they should have been fighting with the Americans instead of against them - and that they should have focused together on the Russians. Ambrose made clear, which I had never really thought about, was that the Germans should have been placing all their men on the Eastern front and should have reduced their efforts in the West.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book as much as his other books. I believe you can read this one and his June 6 book in any order. A must for any library.
My Dad's War.......2007-08-21
This was my dad's war. He was drafted. I was too young for Vietnam. The stopped drafting the year before I was eligible.
My dad doesn't talk about it much. I have a 7 year old, my dad was 80 when he was born. When a war movie comes on, I tell my son, "your granddad was a brave soldier". Once when we were at his house, my son said to my dad, "granddad, you were a brave soldier". My dad turned to me and said, "I was scared to death the whole time I was over there". I replied, "yeah, dad, but you did it. You were in those battles and fought as scared as you may have been".
This is their story. They weren't the enlisted men like today. These kids were drafted. I can't imagine to be so young and to see so much death.
This is a very good book that tells the story of the scared, but brave men who put their lives on the line because they had to. They did it and they won.
God bless all our soldiers!
I had no idea..........2007-06-13
...that the winter of 1944-1945 was so horrific for the average G.I. on the front. A truly excellent read. The fact that Ambrose really admired and respected the "Greatest Generation" is clear from this book - and highlights why we must respect and admire them as well.
I especially appreciated his defense of the 1950's "Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" towards the end of the book. The so-called conformity of the 1950's wasn't a weakness or fault. It was a societal strength. I have always suspected this, but didn't know why. Ambrose explains it.
God Bless the World War II vets - among whom was my own father.
An entertaining and highly informative read.......2007-05-13
This illuminating book covers the WWII European Theatre from the top down, from FDR, Churchill, Stalin & Hitler to Ike, Monty, Patton & the German High Command to the grunts in the foxholes on both sides of the line. Very interesting & well written with both facts and anecdodtal stories.
Ambrose: Right on The Money Again.......2007-04-07
Once again, Ambrose captures our attention on the subject of World War II. For this particular book, Ambrose doesn't focus on one unit, like Band Of Brothers, instead he focuses on all members of the United States Armed Forces that participated in the European Theater of Operations. Aptly titled, Citizen Soldiers. This book gives a very full insight to the behavior and feelings of the various people in various units as the the Allied forces pushed their way from Normandy to Germany. Vivid details of random battles, and a lot of information about the regular every day soldier who carries out orders, not the generals that give them. Nice change of pace. I recommend this book to anybody seeking more information on World War II, or any military history buff. Because of language, I would only recommend this to a mature 13-16 year old.

Good History.......2007-06-20
This Book Shows How Unready, We Were For WW2. How Soldiers Couldn't Speak With Air Cover Or Tanks In Combat Not Because Of The Technology Wasn't There,Just Wasn't Thought Out. How The Men On The Ground Had To Figure Out How To Attack. Germany Had The Best Leadership At The Time. What Won The War For The Allies Was Mass Amounts Of Equipment,We Could Bring To The Fight. And The American And Canadain Soldiers That Used Common Since Learned On The Farms and Streets Of NY. That Turned The Nazi Tide. Not One Man. Not Patton, Not Ike, Not Churchhill, But The Boys That Became Men.

A nice balance of the big picture and the nitty gritty.......2004-12-20
This is a series of anecdotes about soldiers' lives. The author keeps his narrative moving and provides a nice mix of the big picture and vivid snippets. He generally lets the facts speak for themselves. It's a story of regular guys accomplishing something spectacular in a horrible situation. As a baby boomer, it is hard to imagine what WWII was like. This book helps me begin to appreciate the "greatest generation." The narration is excellent. The maps that come with the CDs are much too small. You will want to access to a good WWII atlas.
My Introduction to World War II.......2003-11-10
I happened upon this book at work over seven years ago and started it for lack of reading material. This book started my education into the world of the World War II. Ambrose not only tells you what happened in a time line that is easy to follow, he tells you about life for the average infantryman in the war. It is a must read for anyone studying the war, or a soldiers life in any war, for a hobby or for education. I have given this book as a gift to friends and family members who show an interest in World War II, and I consider it the best World War II book I have read to date after now reading over a hundred other books on this war and soldier's lives in battle. This book and Band of Brothers are by far my favorite two books on the subject.
Ambrose phones in another one.......2003-07-05
The scandal regarding Ambroses's plagiarism come home to roost in this mediocre effort. The "book" is actually a collection of thinly related anecdotes, many less than a paragraph in length, haphazardly pasted together between the bindings. In fact, Ambrose in places plagiarized himself, cutting and pasting passages from his other publications. Moreover, it is apparent from the uneven editing and shifting writing styles that several authors were at work here, at least two of whom lack basic english skills. Themeless, incoherent, cursory, and on occasion simply wrong historically, this publication hardly merits the effort to turn the pages. In essence, while many of the little stories are interesting, the book fails on all levels. It is too cursory to be regarded as a serious history, yet lacks the coherence necessary to stand as a survey of the last ten months of the war. The writing style is too sophomoric to qualify as a "young adult" work, much less as "adult." Both the writing style and the depth of analysis are appropriate for preteens, but many of the anecdotes are too graphic and much of the language too salty for its inadvertently intended audience. It must be regarded a shame that those who purportedly heaped praise upon the work couldn't be bothered to read it first. Apart from several alleged quotations, there is nothing here that a college freshman couldn't accumulate by spending a few days in any decent university library.
Brilliant Writing!.......2000-03-29
As a budding World War II scholar, I found this book to be one of the best I've ever read. Stephen Ambrose captures the imagination with cold, hard facts. He makes you feel what it was really like in the cold trenches of the Bulge, the frustration of the Hedgerows in Normandy, and the exuberance of rolling past the Siegfried Line and into the heart of Germany. A must read and a true companion to 'D-Day'.
Very awesome book.......2000-01-27
I have always loved war novels and movies, however, I failed to ever learn about the facts of what really happened. All I ever learned was fiction. When I started reading this book, I found myself shocked, proud, disturbed, but moved. It takes you from the foxholes of the Bulge to the doctors in the field hospitals. Filled with first person accounts and photographs, Citizen Soldiers portrays life for the average soldier. It is also filled with intersting tidbits. Although it is a history book, it doesn't read like a textbook as Ambrose is a brilliant writer and historian. Even if you do not like history or war, I think you will find yourself intrigued. Thank you for reading my review. :-)

An amazing book - Best Coffee Table books you can get.......2007-04-30
I purchased this book last year.
The book is comprehensive and covers the past century of India from the Tata company's perspective. It has a collection of rare and beautiful photographs capturing important moments in India and Tata' history. The quality of the Hardbound book was exceptional. I gave this book as a present to my Mom, and boy she was happy!
If you are a Tata employee or an Indian or a honest entrepreneur, this book is sure to enthrall you for quite some time.
Thanks,
