Customer Reviews:
Very broad coverage (may be not too deep), good for beginners in this field .......2007-09-19
I found this to be a very good starting point for researching different types of bonds. It does cover in good detail about how the Bonds are brought to the market, the commission structure involved, also touches upon the documentation standard followed for indentures and bond insurances.
I found the coverage of Mortgage backed securities pretty good! Found interesting coverage on how to structure CMOs, how different tranches and different types of bonds (e.g. non-sticky Jump Z Bonds) could be created based on the payments received on the mortgage pools.
All in all I found this book pretty good, definitely worth the money (especially when borrowed from the library) and time. I would not treat it as a reference for taxation information, also while on the topic of taxation, the Munis deserved a more extensive coverage.
A Solid Foundation - Not Too Dry.......2003-02-08
If you've read any number of books on investing, you know they can be tedious. But this book is relatively crisp and to the point. When the details of a subject are beyond the scope of a 200 page read, the book says so. If you are doing anything related to bond investing (even programming!) you should get started with this book.
Very Helpful.......2001-02-08
As a person studying for the Series 7 examination, this document was extremely helpful in understanding the test preparation material. Other people may say there are errors in the document, well, if that is true, then the test-prep books, and the test itself is wrong.
This is a good book people. It can tell you lots of things. Its only downside is that it needs more numerical examples and more mathematical examples to show the concepts behind yield to mature data.
Good starting point for research on this topic.......1999-12-11
I found this book to be very helpful in understaning this topic. I would recommend it to people new to the industry as a good starting point to learn about the bond market.
Disappointing and of Questionable Reliability.......1999-09-25
I found the book disappointing and I question its reliability.
The following quote is taken directly from page 58 of "How the Bond Market Works", by Robert Zipf:
"However, the Tennessee Valley Authority frequently borrows money from the public. Its securities are not guaranteed by the United States Government, and are not generally exempt from state income taxes.
The following quote is taken directly from the "Tax Matters" section of bond offering circulars issued by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
"A U.S. beneficial owner is subject to federal income taxation on income on a Bond. The Act, however, provides that bonds issued by TVA are exempt both as to principal and interest from all taxation now or hereafter imposed by any state or local taxing authority except estate, inheritance and gift taxes."
(If you care to check it out for yourself, Tennessee Valley Authority offering circulars dating back to 1989 are available online, in PDF format, at the TVA web site.)

Book Description
The sequence of antagonistic "'revolutions" and counter-revolutions' between Keynesian and Classical Economics was in the end quite sterile. Fostering a dialogical conception of economics argument, we reconstruct the Pigouvian analytical "node" and the debate unfolding between Keynes and Pigou. The Cambridge "Keynesians" Joan Robinson and Richard Kahn broke that fledging dialogue and ungracefully abandoned a number of Keynes'--and also some of their own--central conceptions. Re-thinking this dialogue leads to new analytical paradigms and perspectives.

Ambrosi fails to incorporate Keynes's D-Z model in his book.......2004-10-17
Ambrosi(A)correctly returns to chapters 8-10 of Part II of Pigou's 1933 masterpiece,The Theory of Unemployment(TU),published in 1933,in order to rediscover what it was that set off the Keynesian revolution.A wastes a good deal of the reader's time in reconstructing the microfoundations of Pigou's macro analysis.Seymour E. Harris,in an article published in the May,1935 issue of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, had already provided a complete micro exposition of Pigou's macro model.A correctly shows that Richard Kahn,Joan Robinson and Austin Robinson were not able to follow the technical, theoretical argument made by Pigou ,that the private sector would always self adjust its allocation of resources over time so as to maintain itself on the boundary of the(PPF) Production Possibilities Frontier(static and dynamic) as long as there was "free competition"(pure competition)and no government interference in the form of tariffs, unemployment compensation ,social security, minimum wages or unions. It is precisely this conclusion of Pigou's theory that Keynes sought to demonstrate ,through a theoretical, mathematical argument, was a special case of a much more general case. However, since, as A demonstrates, Joan Robinson,Richard Kahn and Austin Robinson were unable to follow Pigou's technical analysis, they attempted to reinterpret Keynes's General Theory(GT) argument, which they were never able to grasp at anytime during their lifetimes ,as being that the cause of involuntary unemployment was ultimately due to imperfect competition.Of course, imperfect competition was exactly what Kahn and the Robinsons had specialized in during the time Keynes was writing the GT.(A) successfully shows that the condition Pigou arrived at to demonstrate a constant full employment level of output was simply the macroscopic analogue of the microeconomic condition for optimal resource allocation in the private sector.Pigou's condition was that ,in the aggregate,w/p=MPL,where w/p is the real wage,w is the money wage,p is the price level, and MPL is the marginal product of labor. It is at this point that A drops the ball and fumbles as he was approaching the goal line.A bases his entire analysis of Keynes's "model" on chapter 3 of the GT alone, which has only an introductory ,grammer school ,pre algebra statement of the problem of generalizing the formal neoclassical model presented by Pigou in 1933 so as to integrate the aggregate demand side into the analysis.Keynes's analysis of the formal model of his GT is contained in chapters 10(pp.114-117,p.126),20(pp.280-286), and 21(pp.304-306).Keynes then compares his formal model with Pigou's in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT on pp.271-278. A fails to present Keynes's generalization, which was that,in the aggregate, the condition for optimal resource allocation ,using the marginalist calculus of rational decision making of neoclassical economics,w/p=MPL/(MPC +MPI),where MPC=the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods and MPI=the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods(the factories, plants, equipment and machinery used to produce the consumption goods sold in the marketplace).Only in the special case where MPC+MPI=1 will the special neoclassical theory of Pigou be equivalent to the general theory of Keynes.Of course, this requires that, at the theoretical level ,the private sector of the economy is always operating on the boundary of its PPF.On the PPF,resource scarcity holds and there is an inverse relationship between consumption goods and investment goods.Only voluntary unemployment would occur. There would be zero involuntary unemployment.Inside the PPF,there is a positive relationship between consumption goods and investment goods.Resource scarcity does not hold and there is some level of involuntary unemployment present due to the failure of business decision makers to invest in maintaining an optimal,up to date, stock of capital goods intertemporally over time. This is a long run,not a short run, problem.A ignores all of Keynes's chapter 19 analysis and settles for the incomplete conclusion that Keynes simply disagreed with Pigou's conclusion. On the other hand,he correctly deduces that the Robinsons and Richard Kahn effectively sabotaged the Keynesian revolution with their gross errors of misinterpretation .This was most likely due to the severe lack of formal training in mathematics of the Robinsons.Kahn simply tagged alone due to his 50 year love affair with Joan Robinson.

Book Description
A modern Hamiltonian theory offering a unified treatment of all types of systems (i.e. finite, lattice, and field) is presented. Particular attention is paid to nonlinear systems that have more than one Hamiltonian formulation in a single coordinate system. As this property is closely related to integrability, this book presents an algebraic theory of integrable systems. The book is intended for scientists, lecturers, and students interested in the field.

Book Description
The Vietnam War was arguably the most important event, or series of events, of the "American Century." America entered the brutal conflict certain of its Cold War doctrines and certain of its moral mission to save the world from the advance of communism. As this book explains, however, the war was not at all what the United States expected. Outnumbered and outgunned the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces resorted to a guerrilla war based on the theories of Mao Zedong of China. This was war reduced to its most basic level - find the enemy and kill him.
Customer Reviews:
Good Insight Into A Sensitive Topic.......2006-10-30
The book is a fairly easy read and a good addition to Osprey's Essential Histories collection. It is well organized and mostly follows a chronological order. Although the battle coverage is somewhat superficial, the author does give sufficient attention to some of the main conflicts. Also, this coverage is given from both sides. For example, the author discusses U.S. offensive action at the battles of the Ia Drang Valley, Tet, and the secret campaign into Cambodia. He also discusses the North Vietnamese Easter Offensive and the final Ho Chi Minh Campaign.
This book, however, does more than just cover the war. The author adds value to the story by placing it in context with the counter culture and Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. In order for anyone to understand why America lost the Vietnam War, they must understand the domestic factors affecting U.S. policy. One chapter brings home this point by focusing on a specific conscientious objector.
Finally, the book provides unique insight into the collapse of South Vietnam by looking at economic factors. Most books will talk about a corrupt and ineffective government as a leading cause for their defeat. The author shows true brilliance by showing that nothing is ever quite that simple. He discusses how the loss of US monetary aid caused massive inflation. When the United States withdrew its forces, it left South Vietnam with a technologically superior and battle tested, one million man military. Unfortunately, U.S. economic policy ensured that the South Vietnamese Government would not be able to maintain this army. The loss of US aid meant that this formidable fighting force was short of such essentials as fuel and ammunition.
Because the book is a quick overview of the conflict, it cannot cover everything. For example, it does not discuss the fact that the U.S. broke its promise to defend South Vietnam as a condition of the Paris Peace Accord. Nevertheless, it does cover the main events of the war and place them in the context of the times. The information on the Civil Rights movement and US economic policy adds true value to this book. The author is able to show that despite the fact that the US won every major battle and then left behind a vastly superior ARVN military, the war was lost due to political and economic factors. In essence, the U.S. was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The reader can only hope that we do not repeat ourselves in the ongoing war on terror.
'Cliff's notes" version of history.......2006-07-04
This is a excellent concise history of the worse 'war' in the 20th century. It covers the transition of powers from various peoples such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and various factions of Vietnamese. For novice, this will get you up to speed and even comments on the current Iraq 'war'. Two chapters are personal commentaries from a veteran and a conscientious objector. The latter seem not to flow with the book and could be left for larger works.
Exactly what I Needed for 96 pages!.......2006-02-23
Concise, to the point, balanced, well written, with all the main facts chronologically, different points of views and different theatres (Vietnam/America) of the conflict.
Excelent maps and sufficient pictures.
The book is one of the best (or even the best) of the Essential Histories Series by Osprey.
It is just the short and precise military history of the entire conflict that I wanted to read.
Also: a neat and well-organised book.
A clear, concise overview of the Vietnam War.......2005-03-23
This book is written in a clear style, with plenty of maps and pictures. It gives a concise overview of the Vitenam War in all of its major aspects. It doesn't limit itself to the war's military operations, but delves into the broader issues.
For example, the book examines the causes and development of the anti-war movement in the US and its relationship with the civil-rights movement. The book also surveys the consequences of the Vietnam War until the present, both in SE Asia and in the US.
This is a clear and concise book, and I highly recommend it. Being only 25 years old and not an American citizen, I had only a very sketchy knowledge of the Vietnam War. This book served as a very nice introduction.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2004-10-21
If one was prone to purchase Cliff Notes in college to avoid reading the whole book, then this book may have been written for you. It lacks detail and covers a purported 19-year history in 96 pages (which is more like 86). I am still reading the book, but am very disappointed in its overall content and depth. It appears to be slanted towards a one-sided view from the author's perspective and opinions. Parts are poorly written and several misspellings. If you are not of the Vietnam generation and want to get a full understanding of the Vietnam era, then I recommend that your money be spent on a more thoroughly written history. However, it is published on quality paper, and the photos and maps are of excellent quality.

Book Description
Based on Vietnamese, Chinese, American and British sources-many only recently made available-this work examines Sino-Vietnamese relations in the early stages of the second Indochina conflict. The progression of the Vietnamese Communists' goals from primarily political to essentially military is traced. The book shows that the Hanoi government was remarkably in control of its own decision-making.
Book Description
"THE GREEN BERET . . . A SYMBOL OF EXCELLENCE,
A MARK OF DISTINCTION, AND
A BADGE OF COURAGE."
Though engaged in the United States' longest and most controversial military action, the Green Berets rose above the fray to establish an awesome reputation based on their extraordinary skill, discipline, bravery, and sacrifice. Now, with access to information declassified for the very first time, Shelby Stanton--author, military historian, Green Beret, and Vietnam vet--presents the first and most authoritative, comprehensive, and detailed battlefield history of Special Forces in the Vietnam War.
Making use of firsthand combat interviews, original records, and his own Special Forces experience, Stanton presents a vivid, unvarnished, and thoroughly researched account of one of the best and most highly decorated special-operations units ever. Here are the real stories behind the legends of combat valor and battlefield success forged by U.S. Army Special Forces during more than a decade of fighting in the tropical swamps and deep jungles of Southeast Asia.
With photos, maps, charts, and special sections on Congressional Medal of Honor winners and MIAs

Detailed review of Special Forces 1956-1975.......2004-03-06
This is a volume that gives details and a lot of names of individuals who served in Special Forces from 1956 to 1975.
Vietnam is covered in some detail. There are chapters on SF in Okinawa, Laos, including the White Star operation, The Montagnards, operation Switchback, the LLDB, Tet, The Green Beret Navy, the Mike Forces, CIDG program.
There are maps showing where the SF operatied, including Laos and Thailand.
There are sections also on the SF MIA's and on the Medal of Honor Winners.
This is a good book for anyone wanting to know about the SF in the years covered.
Most comprehensive record of SF operations in SE Asia.......2001-02-04
I made the decision to join Special Forces in 1987 after reading this book. It is by far the most detailed and comprehensive account of Special Forces units and missions in Southeast Asia. There are plenty of "There I was ....." books written by SF men who fought there, and these are great reads and definitely of great historical importance, but this one puts all of it into chronological order. The book begins with the activation of 1st Special Forces Group in 1957 and ends with the final missions of the early 70s. All major operations and facets of SF participation are covered, to include MACV-SOG, CIDG, LLDB, and the Mike Force units. I give this book 5 stars in spite of the fact that the author has failed to respond to allegations in the book "Stolen Valor," which maintains that the author lied about participating in combat missions as well as being wounded in Laos, and used thousands of stolen unit records to write this and other historical works. These accusations do not detract from the book's quality, but if they are true I give the author zero stars for integrity.
Excellent overview of Special Forces in Southeast Asia.......2000-01-20
Stanton's book traces the evolution of US Army Special Forces in Southeast Asia from 1956-1975. He addresses the varied programs and missions that were conducted under Special Forces auspices during the period of American military involvement in Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam. His use of official records coupled with interviews with many of the participants provides an insight that all serious students of Speicial Forces will appreciate. The book includes maps of operational areas and provides a listing of Special Forces personnel classified as missing in action as well as Special Forces recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Excellent summary of Special Forces operations in SE Asia.......1998-01-06
Mr. Santon presents an excellent and authorative review of Special Forces (Green Berets) overt, covert and clandestine special warfare operations in Southeast Asia from 1956 through 1975. I was especially pleased to see some of the photos that I took while serving in B36, Third Mobile Strike Force, from 1969-1970 in War Zone D. Good Job! The text is a must for every Green Beret's library. I sincerely want to locate a copy for my Special Forces / Special Operations library.

Author's Comments.......2005-03-18
After reading the review by Dr. Roger Launis, I felt I had to respond. When I wrote this book in the mid-1980s, my intent was not to tell the story of tactical airlift, but to describe the troop carrier/tactical airlift mission as it was performed by C-130 crews. My desire for a title was either "The Green Garbage Can" or "Trash Haulers" but the marketing department at TAB/Aero deemed otherwise and came up with the one with which the book was saddled. Much of the book deals with the role of C-130 troop carrier/tactical airlifters in Vietnam because, frankly, that is where the modern C-130 mission developed and was the Herk's "finest hour."
Regarding my so-called anti-MAC bias, let me point out that I spent twelve years in the United States Air Force, seven of which was in C-130s in Tactical Air Command and PACAF, and five of which was in Military Airlift Command. I am well familiar with MAC and how it operated, and I am also well-versed in the intense rivalry, sometimes hatred, between the two and of the political manuevering carried out by MATS officers in the 1950s, including putting out news releases blowing the horn for MATS accomplishments, often, actually usually, when they were far less than those of non-MAC transports involved in the same operations. Since Dr. Launis is former chief historian for the Military Airlift Command, I understand his own bias toward the military airlift establishment as it has existed since 1974 when all C-130s went to MAC.
As for the book, looking back twenty years I recognize a few things that I would do differently if writing today. But it is still the only book ever published that covers the role of the C-130 troop carrier/tactical airlift crews and more than likely will remain so since few writers are interested in anything other than fighters and bombers, or in the case of "historians," of following the Status Quo.
Servicable History, at Best.......2004-05-23
There are few more significant types of military airlift planes in terms of number manufactured, diversity of mission, and familiarity to the aviation enthusiast than the C-130 "Hercules." In this book Sam McGowan, a former C-130 mechanic and loadmaster, has attempted the history of this airplane's operations in the United States Air Force. His efforts reveal a wealth of firsthand knowledge about the airplane and its employment.
McGowan begins his book with a brief discussion of tactical airlift--the air movement of troops and cargo over intra-theater distances and often in a combat environment--prior to the procurement of the C-130. Thereafter he begins an involved recitation of the aircraft's use in the Tactical Air Command (TAC) and the two theater major air commands, the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF).
When discussing the C-130 in the late 1950s, McGowan devotes a few pages to the Lebanon crisis, to the Taiwan Straits emergency, and to operations in the Arctic. For the early 1960s he includes discussions of the Congo crisis, operations in India and Southwest Asia, and an overview of the several C-130 variants and units that flew them. From this short commentary of less than fifty pages, the author launches into a lengthy discussion of the use of the C-130 in Vietnam between 1964 and 1975. Most of the rest of the book is concerned with C-130 airlift operations during the war. He ends with a section on the 1974-75 transfer of the tactical airlift mission from TAC and the theater air components to the Military Airlift Command (MAC), thus centralizing in a single organization all responsibility and resources for the airlift mission in the Air Force.
While there is much positive that can be said for the book, The C-130 Hercules lacks the analysis that makes effective history. McGowan claims his book is designed for the aviation enthusiast rather than the academic historian, but that is no excuse these shortcomings. The Time-Life books on a wide range of historical subjects are beautifully illustrated and packaged to grab and hold the attention of enthusiasts, but many of them are also first rate in terms of research, writing, and insight into the nuances of their subjects. These characteristics of well-prepared historical study are lacking for the most part in McGowan's book. I will deal only with a two of the book's weak points.
For example, I question the perspective the reader receives of tactical airlift from McGowan, focusing as he does exclusively on the C-130. The author gives the impression that all USAF tactical airlift in Vietnam, or anywhere else, was provided entirely by C-130s. This creates a misperception about tactical airlift and of the aircraft, crews, and organizations that handled the mission. The author draws extensively upon Ray L. Bowers' superb "Tactical Airlift" (1983) volume in the official history of USAF in Southeast Asia series as a source, but nowhere does he demonstrate Bowers' understanding for the totality of the airlift system.
In addition, McGowan creates false impressions with frequent misstatements or incomplete discussions. For example, he has an irritating and unexplained grudge against the Military Airlift Command, the USAF organization that during the Vietnam era was responsible for the strategic airlift mission--airlift over intercontinental distances usually in non-combat environments--and that acquired the tactical airlift mission in 1974-75. Repeatedly, and for no demonstrated reason, McGowan belittles MAC. He grouses that "There was a good deal of friction between MATS MAC's predecessor and TAC troop-carrier crews because MATS was very publicity-conscious and took every opportunity to blow their own horn, while TAC crews rarely got credit for anything" (p. 60). Whether true or not, and I doubt publicity-seeking was any more true of MAC than other USAF major commands, McGowan never misses an opportunity to take a shot at the command. Even when harsh judgments might be appropriate, his other overstatements, biases, and sometimes incorrect assessments of MAC's role in various airlift missions weaken them. It would have been more appropriate if McGowan had remembered that one of the historian's primary goals is to understand actions in the past and to explain them for the present-day reader.
Air power history very much needs an in-depth study of military airlift. No use of American military power has more flexibility and application in diverse situations and regions than airlift: it is used almost daily for the execution of United States foreign policy objectives in periods of peace, war, and international tension. The C-130 has been actively involved in these operations since it entered the USAF inventory and it deserves a complete, carefully-drawn explanation of how it has been used as an important tool of national policy. McGowan's work has presented a portion of how the C-130 has been used operationally, but we await a full-fledged study free from the bias and incompleteness that flaws this book. For an author interested in pursuing such a study, the opportunity is still present.
