Good book, but really OUTDATED!.......2007-07-09

This book is a good source for review and cheap! So it's great to brush up on all major concepts for the exam, but the copyright date is 1998, and the exam format has changed completely since then. The author reviews the actual exam format at length, and none of the information is valid anymore since the exam is now completely computerized and a totally different format.

Even the titles of the sections have changed somewhat, so this may be confusing to a recent graduate. Even so, the material itself is basically good and you can't beat the price-- the Wiley materials start at 55.00+ each and Becker is outrageous so this may be a good way to review for the exam without breaking your budget.

Helpful Exam Format to Practice!.......2003-10-02

I disagree with the previous reviewer's opinion. AICPA (The organization administering the CPA exam) announced to make the CPA exam a nondisclosed exam in 1996. That is what makes the last real exams even more valuable on the market. I personally called the Copyright Release Department of AICPA on 10/02/2003 to confirm this information is true. They say they release no more than 50 questions a year since 1997. The sample test given by all reviewing agencies now-a-days are derived from the Old test bank reformatted by applying new GAAP.

Yes, the exams in this book are out of date from 1995. However, Barron revised its old test answers to update with the current GAAP in the new edition. In addition, I personally find the tips given for writing short essays very very helpful. I think there are two essential factors to succeed in the CPA test. First, discipline studying. Second, try not to be anxious during the real test. I talked to lots people who studied and can¡¦t pass the test because of nervousness. I strongly encourage anyone who considers taking the test to do this two practice exams on two weekends. Get up in the morning get ready at the same time as if you were to take the real test. Take the practice exams the same schedule and pace as you would do the real CPA test. This is a great tool to kill the nervous cells during the exam. Most of us are just not familiar with the way the exam is structured, not the material of the exam itself.

Badly out of date.......2001-07-02

This book's review of CPA Exam review courses is badly out of date. Its preface says that it has 3 goals including "To provide CPA candidates with the information they need in order to make an informed choice about review program alternatives." Because the book is the 1998 edition it fails to meet this goal. It fails to mention a review course, CPAexcel, that first appeared in 1998 that is setting records for high pass rates and low required study hours of its users.

This book rightly points out that the biggest challenge to passing the Exam is for the candidate to use his/her time well. It says that "becoming a CPA is within the grasp of that average accounting graduate" -- and that the "discouraging passing rates are more a function of poor preparation than they are of inherent difficulty." But the book still steers its readers to the obsolete type of review courses that are a main cause of the "discouraging passing rates." It suggests that the use of software-based study programs is suitable "particularly as a supplemental study aid." To the contrary, candidates who use CPAexcel's software-based study program as their primary study tool find that they learn more per hour of study and, therefore, learn more of what they need to know to pass. Therefore, more of them pass.

The books emphasis on the need to employ time-saving techniques is right on. It needs to be updated to reflect the fact that there is at least one review course that actually delivers this critical benefit today.

Wanted to be a successful CPA?.......2000-06-02

The first step is to pass the examination, which may be pretty difficult. With the release of the book that you have found, you can feel more relaxed about THAT hard test...this book provides all the tools and advices for an excellent score. Try it and feel confident about your future!

I am a professor of finance and international business, and the Associate Dean, at Emory's Goizueta Business School. I found this little book to be a pretty enjoyable diversion. The only thing I would count as a negative would be all the self-help references; I understand why the authors included it, but not being a fan of self-help books and speakers, it was a little off-putting. But overall, I enjoyed the characters and the plot - finally a different angle on the "chick lit" scene.

I fell in love with this book!! It is a combination of Shopaholic and Motherhood with a twist. What a great idea!! The story and character lines were written so well, I felt like I was actually shopping along with them. I completely related to Kate, she is almost exactly like me. Great novel with a surprise twist ending that brings everything to a COMPLETE full circle and opens your eyes. This is a great book for the tired Mommies to treat themselves with!

I loved this book cover to cover --- Madeleine K. Jacob really nails it. This is a story about two women, Kate and Dani, who through a series of fortunate events end up in New York City with a million dollars to spend. They both have kids making demands on their time and energy and emotions, and even though both Kate and Dani love their families with all their hearts, they need a break --- what mother hasn't felt that way? I'm a mother of three and all my spare change seems to be spent on diapers and juice boxes, and sometimes I dream of having an extra twenty-dollars to spend on myself. A million would definitely work too. Yet in the end this book isn't really about the money or the Prada shoes or the spa treatments. It's about friendships, and the way women support each other, and the love of family and all the things that money can't buy. "The Mommy Fund" is sort of an escapist romp and a hilarious fantasy, on one hand, but it has a lot of heart too. When you read the scene, for example, where Kate and Dani try to have an elegant dinner party and the whole thing just disintegrates into chaos before their very eyes, you can't help but wish you could take them out and buy them coffee and tell them everything is going to be all right. By the end of the book, everything is, but not before Kate and Dani (and the reader) have all had a great time getting there. They believe in each other, and the reader believes in both of them as a result. I read this book in one sitting, and now my book group is going to read it. If you need a break and want to treat yourself a little bit, like the characters in "The Mommy Fund," then buy this book.

Silly premise.......2005-02-09

Another book in the chick lit series. Featuring two women (one single, one married) who are tired of their lives and want to "live it up". Low and behold, one of them gets a cheque for one million dollars and they decide to go to New York to spend, spend, spend.

This book is average at best. There is one gigantic hole in the beginning. If my employer left a million dollar cheque for me on my desk, I would make darn sure that it wasn't a huge mistake.

My first thought when I was reading the book was that the person making out the cheque thought it was for $1,000.00. Through convoluted ways, we find out that yes, that was the case and that somebody else added a couple of zeros. No matter,it seems obvious to me that the main character would have had the brains to confirm the amount with her employer.

So, from there on, the book and the storyline fell apart for me.

As well, these two main characters are so incredibly childish that they were huge turn offs.

The writing style was also nothing to write home about.

This is a pass.

As a working mother who dreams, now and then, of taking a break from my busy life, I found The Mommy Fund to be the next best thing to a fabulous getaway. Reading this snappy, funny, fast-paced, and wildly entertaining book was satisfying in every way. Dani and Kate are sympathetic, recognizable, less-than-perfect, and completely engaging--the kind of women I'd love to invite to my house for coffee and hours of great conversation. When Dani and Kate come unexpectedly into a lot of money and head to New York for a week, I was right there with them, living out my most extravagant fantasies and enjoying every minute of it. And yet the book is much more than a fantasy, which is what separates it from other novels like it. Yes, the characters get to buy gorgeous new clothes, get glamorous makeovers, and go dancing in late-night clubs (hooray)--but throughout it all they grapple with very real problems of motherhood, marriage (or the lack of it), career, and personal fulfillment. There is unexpected depth to this story, an appeal to the heart that resonates beyond the fantasy fun. The story ends with a surprising twist that ties things up wonderfully and manages to combine both fantasy and reality: the perfect ending to a modern fairy tale. I can't wait to read this book again. My advice? Put the kids to bed, make some tea (or pour yourself a little wine!) and settle in bed with The Mommy Fund. This book is a real treat-- a gift to reading mothers everywhere.

The unknown author of these hundred short chapters has left a different and worthwhile contribution to military history. Sawyer, the modern commentator, has made it even more relevant to the contemporary reader.

Each chapter has three parts. The first is almost always a brief reference to Sun Tzu, Ssu-ma Fa, or some other classic of strategy and tactics. The second part reaches into China's long written history to find historical examples of each precept.

Although phrased as a commentary on older texts, the reader should remember the rigid social structure and respect for ancient wisdom common in the Ming dynasty (when this was written). New ideas were suspect, even irreverent to the extent that they challenged the classics. Instead, new ideas were concealed as commentaries on the established wisdom. One should not dismiss these commentaries as just a rehashing of texts that were a thousand years old even then.

The third part of each chapter is Sawyer's modern addition, sometimes longer than both traditional parts together. Sawyer uses these notes to explain historical content and to point out relevance to the modern world. The real value of Sawyer's commentary, however, is its extensive citation of other Chinese military classics. He will often provide the whole passage to which a chapter alludes, as well as related passages from other texts. I found this very helpful, especially when Sawyer quoted classics that are little-known or inaccessible to English speakers.

The indices are good, providing reference by topic, by proper names referenced, and by the eight classics references for which commentaty is provided. There was no bibliography, though, a real loss. I would very much like to read the Wu Tzu or other unfamiliar titles named, but I'll have to hunt those down on my own.

This shouldn't be your first book on classical Chinese strategy, but it will be a welcome addition to any serious collection.

Definite keeper, where's my Hardcover?!?!?!?.......2001-09-06

This book is fantastic. Each chapter is a stategy illustrated by historical examples, followed by authors comments. Sawyer does not ruin the historical accounts with his own take on the interpretation of the event. This is happily so unlike the myriad of crummy interpretations of 'Art of War' and 'Book of 5 Rings' available, polluted by the translators' opinions and biases. This is a testament to Sawyer as a scholar 1st and foremost.

He provides insight and opinions in his comments after the strategies and examples, but lets you draw your own conclusions about the relevence and applicability while you read each short strategy.

I have been able to apply these strategies to real life situations in dealing with individuals and groups. It has helped me in business and personal relationships by drawing parallels between the strategies and applying them figuratively. It has also helped me in a literal sense in mundane theaters like computer gaming as well.

I want this in hardcover!!! I will pay for it!!!

The book provides an interesting perspective into the many dimensions of strategy. It gives an introduction, a historical example, and discussion of each section. It is up to the flexibility and insight of the reader to make full use of the information provided.

100 enjoyable chapters on unconventional thinking.......2000-08-19

Concicise and entertaining, short one to two page essays. Each chapter has 1) a forword explaing the strategy, 2) a historical battle examples, 3) and a commentary on how to best apply the strategy. Easy to read, allowing you to enjoy one strategy at time without having to go back over previous chapters. This book reiterates in an entertaining way what B.H. Liddell Hart says in his classic book on military 'Strategy.' I recommened this book to everyone who wishes to view the world from an unconventional point of veiw.

Solid introductory text.......1997-08-20

Given the raft of weirdos who over the years have chosen Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) for their subject, it is a welcome addition to have a serious book by a real scientist who has actually excavated at the site for several years. Tiwanaku is a favorite focus for loonies ranging from the Von Daniken "extra terrestrials are responsible for all the great human achievements of the past" school to the New Age mystic Shirley Maclain's Out on a Limb [Out of your mind!] school. While not explicitly addressing the wacko theories, Kolata's book shows how, contrary to their implicit racism, the indigenous people of the Titicaca basin were more than ingenious enough to come up with ways to contruct major monuments, carve incredible fantastic stone sculptures, and make the high arid plain of the altiplano bloom with potatoes, tubers and quinoa. These people had indoor plumbing and public sewage systems 1500 years ago! The Tiwanaku is a bit simplistic and general for the Andean or archaeological specialist; it is more appropriate for the first year University student or educated layman. Nonetheless, it brings together the current general state of knowledge about this important civilization in a highly readable fashion.

Great book; great for teachers as well.......2000-04-18

This is a readable, but thorough survey of the biology of aging. I teach in this field, and I'm sorry it took me a few years to run across this book. (Finally, courtesy the "related books" feature of Amazon.) In addition to being a very good book on aging (and there are several out there for the general reader), this book is chock full of great color photographs and clear, colorful graphs.

Wonderful place to start for anyone who has ever wondered why we age and how. Evolutionary treatment is solid. I bought this one to keep.

This book is an excellent resource and an easy read for anyone with a senior dog. It brings to an owner's attention many areas of aging in a pet similar to human aging. It also gives good advice on dealing with problems encountered with an aging pet.

Wonderful book!.......2005-04-19

This book just won a 2004 Maxwell award from the Dog Writers Association of America in the Book: care and health category, and with good cause. McCullough knows what she's talking about. She covers nutrition, exercise, health cost, typical diseases, what to expect, and - of course - a discussion on when is the best time to let your friend go. Housebreaking can be a problem for some seniors, and McCullough recommends bringing out the crate. Certain problems that seniors are prone to, such as going blind or deaf, are discussed, as well as how to help your dog cope. Her practicality and compassionate approach to canine senior citizens, who deserve to lounge about in the sunshine, comes through clearly. Much of what she says is common sense, but if you haven't experienced what happens to a senior dog, this book will really help you prepare, understand what is happening, and what you can do about it.

This is a great resource! I have a 9 year old Sheltie with some health issues and I found this book to have terrific information specific to older dogs. It's a good read straight through or as a reference if you're just looking for information on a particular subject.

This is a wonderful book to have even if your four-pawed friend is just a youngster, as well as being a good guide if you have an older cat, and you need help taking care of all the changes that can take place quite rapidly as an animal ages.
Among the many instructive chapters, the one on health care is detailed and extensive, covering all the common ailments, with useful diagrams and treatment solutions.
There's also a chapter on home care, with good tips on how to administer medication, flea control, and how to take care of emergencies such as burns, choking, etc.

Chapter 5, "Physical, Mental, and Emotional Well Being" is a short but valuable one. It will tell you how to deal with the stressful situations in a cat's life, like moving, travel, and the introduction of a new pet into the family.

Being a "cat person", I much appreciate the care and research that went into this book. The layout is excellent, with several nice b&w photos, easy to read print, "Veterinary Tips" at the end of each chapter from veterinarians across the country, and an occasional side-bar with highlighted and very helpful information.
This is an intelligent, well written book that will serve your cat well and keep it purring from youth to old age.

Decent Little Book.......2007-08-13

It is a Good intro, but It does have some problems. It is missing a bit of coverage on Costal Geology, Sustainability in Coastal Engineering, and it has MUCH MUCH to much emphasis on sand coasts.

This book provides an integrated approach to coastal dynamics and shoreline protection, aided by the use of specific case studies. It was developed from lecture notes for a course in Coastal Dynamics and Shoreline Protection addressed to students of Environmental Sciences, and for this reason it is organized in such a way as to introduce the reader to the fundamental principles of the topics discussed in each chapter. The text introduces both undergraduate and graduate engineering students, as well as practicing engineers, to the different meteo-marine factors that influence coastal dynamics. Using practical and theoretical application, this book explores factors such as winds, sea level variations, offshore waves (predicted and measured, regular and random), wave transformation and breaking as well as topics of sediment transport computation, beach profile and shoreline modeling and coastal protection systems. Some of the topics discussed are as follows: coastal remediation and management; mechanisms of sediment transport such as linear and higher order waves, random waves and spectra, wave transformation in the coastal zone, water levels, short-term and long-term wave prediction, sediment transport, shoreline and beach profile modeling; alternative protection systems; basic elements of hydraulic and structural design for both rigid structures and beach fills.
