Book Description
Revolutions, Institutions, Law brings together scholars representing a wide range of academic disciplines to examine and discuss the role of law as mediator between social revolutions of all kinds and ideally stable social institutions. Semiotics is the point of view and referent theory that binds contributors into common focus on this triadic, dynamic interplay. From this perspective law-as-mediator is transformed no less than the forces of revolution on the one hand, and the forces of institutional stability on the other hand.

A Dirty Job: A Novel
ASIN: 0945575513 |
Book Description
Kurt Clausen has worked as a salad girl, a porn salesman, and - prehaps most reluctantly - a journalist. In this "terminally irreverent" (Richmond News-Leader) novel, he finds himself taking on everyone from his editor and his girlfriend to the fundamentalists and vegetarians covered on his beat - and along the way, learns some surprising (and hilarious) lessons about life, love, and the press.
Welter's I Want to Buy a Vowel, also a Berkley Signature Edition, was named one of Booklist's Best Books of 1996.
Great reviews in the Berkley Signature Edition tradition.
The author has been compared to everyone from John Irving to Jonathan Swift, Frank Capra to Carl Hiaasen, John Kennedy Toole to Dave Barry.
Customer Reviews:
Very funny but ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-02-22
This is a more a book of one-liners than a novel. The author takes deserved shots at journalists and newspapers (I used to be a reporter and editor) and he's exactly right that reporters almost always do stories that the public does not read or care about. The writers are wasting whatever talents they have. If the stories were quirky and interesting, people would read them. Unfortunately, such reporters get fired, which is exactly what happens to Welter in this novel. This is a funny book, but not exactly a coherent novel. Welter covers too much ground. Not that that is a bad thing, but it reads more like a collection of skits and criticism than a novel. It is very funny, though, and I highly recommend. Just don't expect a satisfying ending in which all the strings are tied up.
Nobody loves a maverick.......2003-10-02
Some authors regard scatological jokes and lascivious one-liners as high humor.
Others rely on puerile quips and farces to bring in the laughs.
Not so John Welter's "Begin To Exit Here". Welter delivers this witty, intelligent and often heart-warming story with great aplomb.
The protagonist of this story is Kurt Clausen, an incorrigibly smart-alecky reporter looking for love and work. Having been fired from his previous job for being at loggerheads with the editors who disapprove of his journalistic style, Clausen stoops to working as a salad girl and a porn salesman before finally landing himself another newspaper job.
Clausen is at once humble yet overbearing; world-weary yet childlike; brilliant yet uninstructed in the ways of the world. His relationship with his new girlfriend, Janice, screams of insecurity on Clausen's part. However, Clausen is unselfconscious about his insecurity and his fear that Janice might leave him. He does not mask his dire neediness of her under a veneer of machismo the way many men do, but is candid and susceptible to tears where Janice is concerned.
For all his sarcasm, wit and penchant for Socratic irony, Clausen is very simply a man, formerly alcoholic, seeking meaning in an otherwise meaningless world. Clausen is only human, and seeks both the approval and love of kindhearted Janice, who does not withhold either from him even in his moments of astounding irresponsibility. Nothing is sacred to Clausen, you see, and his politically incorrect and socially irresponsible manner of reporting somber events gets him into trouble first with the public, then with the executive editor, and finally, with Janice herself. Employment and existence for Clausen ultimately becomes a battle between being true to himself and toeing the line along with the rest of the world that is intolerant of difference.
The highlights of this book include Clausen's reporting of a Ku Klux Klan parade and horrendously funny observations on journalism. The one-liners in this book startles and delights with their scathing and irreverent insight peculiar to iconoclasts. Clausen annoys you one moment with his suicide-like tendency to jeopardize his job and his relationship with Janice, yet in the next paragraph you are mollified and touched by his tenderness, his belief in a benevolent God, and his love of purity and truth.
Like Clausen, many of us have growing up to do, and this book is one that documents Clausen's journey with candor, love and understanding. A must-read for journalists, iconoclasts, alcoholics, the unemployed and the lonely. Which leaves very few of us out.
Very funny at times, ultimately overstays its welcome.......2003-01-01
Trying to depart from my usual fare of hard-boiled detective fiction, I gave this one a try in pursuit of light-hearted satire. This one takes on the press, as well as all kinds of male attitudes, fears and shortcomings in the dating game.
The book starts off promisingly enough, serving up a seemingly unending supply of one-liners. Along with that, the book satirizes religious and sexual angst with the unceasing preoccupation of a Woody Allen movie.
Unfortunately, about halfway through the recipe begins to falter and eventually, get stale. The protagonist sinks into a morass of self-pity, cynicism, wise-assery and descends from fashionably alienated urban male to self-centered, infantile bore. His relentless worship of his girlfriend and his codependent obsession with here make you hope that the author is not writing from personal experience. Ultimately, this is the stuff that turns lovers into stalkers.
All told, there's enough to like about this book to justifiy about one half of it. The parts I did enjoy would encourage me to read another Welter book of laugh-out-loud humor. Thus 2-3 stars seems a fair compromise.
Funny and poignant.......2001-07-17
I'd read one other book by Welter, I Want to Buy a Vowel, which I had enjoyed, so I decided to try this one. I haven't tried his Night of the Avenging Blowfish yet, but that's next.
I enjoyed this book also. The main character is a grumpy (although he's still very young), iconoclastic journalist by the name of Kurt, who despises the standard, boring reportage he feels most newspapers turn out. Some of the best parts of the book are when Kurt is ranting about what's wrong with modern-day journalism. For example, he remarks at one point that there is no story so exciting and vital that standard newspaper reportage can't turn it into just another bloodless, boring story. To Kurt, most newspapers are little better than straight-up fish-wrap.
Kurt doesn't want to be just another reporter cranking out the same tripe over and over, and that's where he gets into trouble. Kurt's witty, ironic, and irreverent approach causes him to continually run afoul of his chief editor, who doesn't understand why Kurt can't just write like everybody else and not make waves.
Welter's I Want to Buy a Vowel had a sweetly surrealistic quality reminiscent of a Frank Capra film (such as It's a Wonderful Life). And some of that quality is evident here also, especially in the dialog between Kurt and his girlfriend. Their relationship is well-developed and is a nice touch in the book, as they banter playfully back and forth, talking about life, love, and the trials and tribulations of the newspaper business, at which, as I mentioned before, Kurt levels some trenchant and funny broadsides.
I think you'll enjoy this book. You won't find it full of belly laughs like a Hiaasen or Chris Moore book, but Welter isn't really going for that sort of thing. Rather, his books have both a sweet and sad quality combined with an ironic wit that ranges from gentle to outright vicious. He has his own unique voice and is worth reading if only for that.
The ONLY way to make it through a night at Copy Club........2000-04-29
I didn't expect much from this book, but it has found itsway into my collection of favorites. The protagonist's angstregarding his love interest and his career were tempered by the author's wry sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed every page, and am on my way to the bookstore right now to pick up Welter's next two novels. END

Book Description
This is a new history of the Austro-Prussian-Italian War of 1866, which paved the way for German and Italian unification. Geoffrey Wawro describes Prussia's successful invasion of Habsburg Bohemia, and the wretched collapse of the Austrian army in July 1866. Blending military and social history, he describes the panic that overtook Austria's regiments in each clash with the Prussians. He reveals the blundering of the Austrian commandant who fumbled away key strategic advantages and ultimately lost a war--crucial to the fortunes of the Habsburg Monarchy--that most European pundits had predicted they would win.
Customer Reviews:
A gem.......2007-06-26
Taking a little-known topic like the Austro-Prussian (and Italian) War could have been just a futile academic exercise. Wawro turns this little book into a real treasure. Within just the first few pages he does a succinct and brilliant job of analyzing Clausewitz and Jomini and explaining the rise of Prussia to dominate Germany and Europe. The cover art doesn't do the book justice, but I'll be looking forward to Wawro's future work.
Illegible.......2006-11-21
I have no wish to criticise the writer- I moved on to this book after being very impressed by his work on the Franco-Prussian War, but I bought the paperback over the Internet and was shocked when it arrived- the print is very small and I had to struggle to read it with a magnifying glass. Cambridge should be ashamed of producing such a volume.
4 to 1 ratio of firepower; 4 to 1 ratio of casualties!.......2006-02-22
This is an outstanding book that is very well written. Although definitely Austro-Centric, it has superb use of sources and secondary works. Why the Austrians lost the war was due to many factors; not the least of which was firepower. The needle gun could deliver four times as many shots per minute as the Rifled muskets that the Austrians used. This was perhaps the deciding factor, as reflected in the casualty ratio of four to one in favor of the Prussians in every battle!
Although the Austrians had superior artillery, they could not quite use it decisively; perhaps because of their over-reliance on a combination of "strategic defense, tactical offense". The book has a vast number of examples of Austrian shortcomings; a better Austrian general or one of at least average competency would have made far better use of their "central position" when the clunky Prussian War Machine gave them openings.
The pathetic non-use of cavalry by both sides is surprising, considering how the role of cavalry had changed during the American Civil War. Each side should have made use of deep cavalry raids to attack their opponents lines of communication.
Think of what a competent Austrian general could have done with their superb cavalry if it had been properly employed in raids against the Prussian communications as they withdrew along their own railroads!
The only negative in this book is that the maps lack a kilometer scale, which prevents the reader from considering the distances of marches and the size of the battlefield.
Tour de Force!!.......2005-03-02
Geoffrey Wawro writes a fast paced, fact filled account of one of histories most analyzed conflicts. It is a Tour de Force from the very first page. In the ususal military style, the author, a Professor at the US Naval War College, writes a no -holds barred account that is a withering indictment of both the French and German Commanders. Despite Von Moltke's gift of military genius and improvisation his commanders nearly wrecked his best laid plans, and, the French Officers, regrettably, deserted there men and snatched defeat from the jaws of an almost victory. In comparison with Michael Howards book, Geoffrey is more blunt and has a slighly narrower focus on some of the key events that lead to war. In comparison with Michael Howard, his first three chapters are not as comprehensive, but compliment Sir Howards work. Never the less, the strategic and operational analysis that Wawro renders is first class, brutally frank and objective in the first degree. There are only two books that you will ever need on the Franco-Prussian War or to have as a reference on your book shelf; this one, and the one by Sir Michael Howard.
Good but biased work.......2004-12-06
This is overall a good, well written and serviceable book, but the parts devoted to the Austrian-Italian conflict leave much to be desired. Much of what the author writes about the structural flaws, drawbacks and defects of the newly born Italian army certainly hold broadly true. However his account of the 1866 campaign and the battle of Custoza relies heavily on Austrian material - obviously magnifying their troops' achievements as well as the Italian defeat - while Italian sources, albeit mentioned in the bibliography, seem to be discounted or rather neglected in the narration.
The truth about Custoza is that, and no offense meant to the widely acknowledged Austro-Hungarian bravery and toughness, it was an Italian self-defeat rather than an Austrian victory. The conduct of the battle on the part of the Italian army, army corps, and some division commanders was abysmally botched, an outright failure which led the troops on the field (and a few divisional commanders who fought very well) to lose a battle they had already won. In spite of the collapse of two Italian divisions (and another was badly mauled), the Austrians had achieved nothing when the battle reached its climax: on their right flank they had suffered so many casualties they could not move forward any further and were going to be attacked, in the center Italian counterattacks had bloodily pushed them back and their cavalry action on their left had gone nowhere. They were just ripe for destruction. The Italians still had several intact divisions ready for action and had those units been properly used, and had the Italian army had a leadership up to the challenge instead of the panicking or dull blockheads it had, the Austrians would surely have been crushed.
In the first phase of the battle, two Italian divisions with 16,000 fatigued, hungry and thirsty men caught by surprise in march order, held back 32,000 Austrians for hours inflicting heavy casualties. Those units eventually crumbled and some exhausted battalions broke and ran, but elements of the two divisions fought to the last and the Austrians had suffered so badly that they didn't push any further. Stating, as Wawro does, that "whole Italian divisions dissolved upon contact with the enemy" is an absurd exaggeration. During the battle an Austrian regiment, too, was routed, but this piece of news from the battlefield is apparently overlooked in the text.
Much is also made of the 3,500 or so Italian prisoners (a small fraction of the Italian force) taken by the Austrians, and the classic stereotyped portrayal of the "surrendering Italian" is unavoidably dished out to the reader, but out of the 2,800 Austrian MIA, 1,500 were captured by the Italians.
Readers interested in a fairer, less stereotype-fed account of the clash between Italy and Austria-Hungary in 1866 will have to look for less biased works.

Discovering the Mysteries of Ancient America: Lost History And Legends, Unearthed And Explored
ASIN: 0917054199 |
Book Description
Reinoud de Jonge (a Dutch chemist) and Jay Wakefield (an American biologist) have specialized in the study of megalithic culture. They present their analysis of a dozen archaeological sites, showing how many petroglyphs are geographic maps. They show how megalithic monuments provide numerical data revealing megalithic religion and ancient sailing discoveries in the Atlantic. For example, numeric picture writing at Loughcrew, Ireland, deciphered by the authors, reveals that these people gave up their efforts to cross the Ocean west of Greenland in 3200 BC. However, decipherment of the petroglyphs at Dissignac, France, shows that they next explored the earth to the east, where they discovered Australia and Alaska. Subsequently, they found routes across the Atlantic, and built Stonehenge, the monument for the discovery of America.
These decipherments shed light on a number of mysteries in American prehistory, such as the origin of the Olmec civilization, the Michigan copper mines, and the stone chambers of New England. This is the only book providing solid evidence, reasonable explanations, and comprehensive dating for megalithic petroglyphs and monuments. The authored illustrate the predictive power of these decipherments in several instances. This book will fascinate anyone interested in old religions, little-known petroglyphs, ancient seafaring, voyages of discovery, and the prehistory of Europe and America.

The concept of this book that ancient petroglyphs and monoliths like Stonehenge are actually ancient nautical references is actually supported by other archaeologists from different perspectives, which makes this book even more compelling. I believe the authors are on to something here. When I finished this book, I felt like I had begun to just glimpse what the mindset of ancient people must have been. [...] This is supporting evidence for the spread of the SunGod religion. Also check out The Calendar Of Coligny as a Druidic reference to that age before the coming of Rome. It seems that before the modern age of common written languages, there was another age of the language of numbers that were encoded by the ancients into the stones, and other artifacts, as mnemonics to aid in maintaining their level of commerce and standards of living.
This is a mind-bender but I must recommend it if only for the reason that I believe there will be a lot more attention given to this concept in the coming years.
Review, "How the SunGod Reached America".......2002-06-24
Authors Reinoud de Jonge, a Dutch physical chemist, and Jay Wakefield, an American biologist, share a passion for megalithic culture and ancient seafaring history. For this collaboration, four years in the making, they visited and/or analysed over a dozen archaeological sites in Europe and North America containing megalithic stones bearing inscriptions, purposefully positioned menhirs and astronomically aligned shafts, mounds and circles.
The authors are convinced that many of the inscriptions, or petroglyphs, are geographic maps showing discoveries of islands and continents across the oceans, as well as being navigational charts with information about latitude and longitude, sailing directions, currents and winds. The earliest of these, found near the Mediterranean between southern Italy and Gibraltar, are dated to the beginning of Neolithic times, c. 6000 BC.
Applying the "de Jonge rules of decipherment", they deduce that it took about 4,000 years for the world to be explored and charted. The discovery of the Cape Verde islands they see recorded in the tumulus of Kercado in Brittany, circa 4500 BC; of Madeira, on a tablet in Galicia, c. 4100 BC; and of Iceland and Greenland, in petroglyphs at a cairn in Loughcrew, Ireland, c. 3200 BC.
They believe the discovery of America and Australia is shown in a map at Dissignac, Brittany, c. 2600 BC; and that America is part of the Stonehenge code, c. 2000 BC (and even had its own Stonehenge nautical centre in North Salem, c. 2200 BC). The most recent petroglyph, inscribed in a tablet on Long Island and dated to 850 BC, shows an Egyptian expedition to America.
These astounding decodings may well help solve many unexplained aspects of late prehistory--from the prevalence of a Sun God religion and the origin of the Olmecs, to the identity of the New England stone chamber builders and the first mappers of Antarctica....

Book Description
This book covers three key subjects: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Taking a well-balanced approach, the authors clearly demonstrate the connections among the three interrelated subjects. Because of the consistent terminology and continuity, readers will find it easier to learn the three subjects. Instructors will also find it easier to refer to material covered earlier (e.g. thermodynamic laws as applied in fluid mechanics and heat transfer). The book has a design emphasis and provides the appropriate amount of material for non-mechanical engineering students. Addressing various levels of difficulty, the authors provide a wealth of examples and exercises, including synthesis problems and design problems.

Perfect for introduction to thermal systems.......2005-12-05
This book is written by the leaders in each of the three areas of thermal systems engineering and it really shows. Keep in mind this is an introductory book and does not cover every part of each topic, but for an introductory class it is perfect! Concepts are easy to understand with very good supporting examples. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing a brush up or a good introduction to thermal systems.

A Students View........2000-03-09
Its not that its a bad book, but that it was certainly not a book that I feel makes the subject easy to understand or comprehend. I feel that there must be other books, such as those in similar fields by Cengal and Boles.
If its prescribed for a paper I would reckomend getting it out from the library rather than buying it. I had to buy it for an open book exam, and am now having trouble selling it, no one wants it!
If you want a book to read to learn about thermodynamics try other titles, this one wont do your effort justice.
(I got a B in the paper anyways)
