This is a fine book, it covers just about everything to do with the internet that you could want, it is concise and yet has excellent secret tips - I am talking about very rare and highly useful tidbits.

I've been using the net since '88 and this is the first book I've seen covering it all so very very neatly. The nitty gritty, behind the scenes and all in a very well organised, highly readable manner.

I believe even a complete beginner could learn a lot from this, although if you are a beginner you might be overwhelmed at first by the sheer volume of the whole book, you will find that you can take one relevant section at a time.

For experts, I am sure you will find something of value in every chapter, for us it is like a fascinating casual read, and may reveal things that have mystified you all these years.

Finally it is very up to date.

- TOTAL BEGINNER : good, but you might need some sort of visual guide first, or tutoring.

- BEGINNER and INTERMEDIATE : you will learn a lot from this book.

- EXPERIENCED : discover what has really been going on in the background all this time.

- EXPERT : probably do not NEED this book, probably know a lot already, but I think you will enjoy it nonetheless, and as it covers so many areas it might round you out in ways you did not expect.

- DEVELOPER : could provide inspirations, and you know what they're worth.

Can I say how much I loved this book? I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I am a big fan of stories that carry over from one book to the next, and in NGFF we get to hear all about Kirby Green, Jules Verne's best friend whom we first met in "American Idle" (another fabulous book!!).

Kirby is a tough girl. She has to be, considering that she works for a company that sells lingerie and sex toys, with a little whips and chains thrown in for a good measure! No shrinking violet, our Kirby, but it's exactly that devil-may-care," eat-sh**-and-die "attitude that gets her in hot water with her new boss when he calls her on the carpet for firing her entire marketing staff within the first couple of months of attaining the vice presidency position at W&L. It doesn't help that said boss is gorgeous, in a Hugh Jackman sort of way, so when he offers to make her a bet, Kirby is taken off guard and agrees. It doesn't seem too difficult, really. All he wants her to do is find ONE person to call her "nice"--ANY person--within the next four weeks and she can go on her trip to Italy, which she has been planning for months now, without any problem. If not, she has to stay and work on the new product line which is coming out at the end of the month. Of course Kirby balks so he ups the ante--he DOUBLE DOG DARES her. AND he raises the stakes to include her JOB. If Kirby can't find one person to call her "nice" in a month, not only will she lose her vacation, she will lose her job also! The problem is that her boss doesn't seemed to be very concerned about losing the bet, which makes Kirby start to doubt herself. Is she really THAT awful? Plus it doesn't help that her boss is pretty hot and she's having rather unprofessional thoughts about him, which is a strict "no-no" in her own code of ethics. Maybe she should let him fire her if she can get him instead! What's a girl to do?!

Meanwhile, Kirby's secretary, Brianna, is having her own problems. While Kirby is a bitch on wheels, Bree is still on training wheels! She is so nice that she would rather marry her over-bearing fiance than break up with him, because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings! What she really wants to do is be a professional opera singer, but everyone else in her life thinks she is silly and that it is just a passing fancey. However, when Bree's opera instructor manages to get her an audition for a position in the local opera company, Bree must choose what she really wants for herself. When she learns about the bet, Bree jumps to Kirby's defense, much to Kirby's surprise, and offers to help her learn to be "nice" if Kirby will help her learn how to stand up for herself. Together they set out to prove that "nice" doesn't have to mean "weak" and discover that they are a lot more alike than they would have ever guessed.

Alesia has a wonderful way with a story. She knows how to have her characters reach out to the reader, grab them by the hand and drag them head first into the story and keep them there, breathless with laughter, until the very end. I loved Kirby in "American Idle" and I was thrilled to get to read more about her in NGFF. This book had me laughing out loud (much to the consternation of my children and husband!) and I never had a slow moment thoughout. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sassy, well-written story. Alesia rocks!

Love Kirby's Style!.......2006-01-21

Kirby is a modern herione. She is a strong buisiness women with a flair for fashion. Just two problems...she works for a sex toy company and her sexy boss, Banning, thinks she is the devil. Before she can take her long awaited vacation to Italy, Kirby must get someone to call her nice...if she fails...she loses her high paying job! With that on her plate and juggling work with her new "Little Sister" found in the "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" organization, Kirby has a wild time with a few surprises on the way.

I loved AMERICAN IDLE, but didn't care much for the Kirby character. Kirby's the star in this book, and she won me over! Hilarious plot with fine writing--fantastic chick lit book. If you liked AMERICAN IDLE, you've gotta read NICE GIRLS FINISH FIRST. A winner!

Chicklit at its finest.......2005-08-14

Honestly, I kept laughing out oud and startling my family. This is a smart, funny, thoughtful story that really came as a surprise to me. It had come highly recommended, but I like to keep my expections in check....

You know that feeling you get, when your in the first couple of chapters of a book... and you suddenly realize that this might be a great book... but then you worry cause, you've never read the author before, and you'e too excited too early on and your worried that the author may not be able to deliver by the end? Well, around page 119... right around naked bungee jumping... I started to relax because I had read enough to know that I was in good hands with Ms. Holliday.

I finished the book with a satisfied smile, and a feeling of regret that the ride was over so soon. But then I perked up thinking about American Idle. I'm going to get that as soon as possible, let me tell you.

Can you be too naughty or too nice?.......2005-08-08

Having previously read and laughed my head off with American Idle by Holliday, I looked forward to Nice Girls Finish First. Kirby had been a great secondary character in Idle, and I looked forward to HER story. I wasn't disappointed! Kirby isn't what anyone would call nice...especially the three employees she just fired. Her assistant Brianna, is too nice...wipe-your-feet-on-your-way-out nice. When Kirby finds herself in trouble at work and needing to find someone to call her 'nice' and quick, Brianna steps in offering her services. As long as Kirby teaches Brianna to quit letting people walk all over her. The result is hilarious! Both women work to discover who they really are, who they really want to be, and who they want to be it with. There are a ton of laughs, a few tears, and a whole lot of fun in this book. You'll love the characters in Nice Girls, so pick it up and hit the beach, for a great read!

A friend gave me this book because I am originally from South Bend and like to cheer for ND, but I am not what you would call a sports fan. I know next to nothing about basketball. I found this book to be very inspiring and heartwarming. Anyone participating on or coaching a team of young people would love it. It profiles each player, but emphasizes that each player coming together as a team is what is important.

Great story lost in poor writing.......2005-01-06

The book is illogically split up, causing confusion, repetition, and destroying any suspense. The writing is often, at best, cheesy.

Most frustrating of all is the presence editing errors on almost every page, including obvious misspellings, such as the "Big Eat" Conference, "Stoors, Connecticut," and "Diana Taurisi."

This story is about the 2001 Final Four Champions; however, the writing would have been knocked out of the first round of the NIT.

Cheer Cheer for old Notre Dame!

This is a very uplifting book that will keep you turning the pages and leaving you with a wonderful feeling as you do.

It's a great story that everyone should read. It's a story of true student athletes that live in non- athletic dormitories and must attend class.

Notre Dames 2nd trip to the Final Four under Coach McGraw, the first trip was in 1997 with 7 healthy players. With a healthy team for this trip, she vows that the results would be different!

Mark and Muffet did a great job of giving us a real feeling of being there for that wonderful ride to the top. This is a story about a team that comes together for one unbelievable run to the title. A point guard who is granted a 5th year, an academic All-American at center whose talent is only surpassed by her brains on and off the court , and maybe the best 3 point shooter of all time whose talent is accentuated by this team, and the daughter of a NFL linebacker who has tremendous strength and quickness. It is a story of a true team where everyone understands that team goals come first. Finally a Coach who has the vision to see this teams strengths and puts together an offense and defense to make them almost unstoppable.

Coach McGraw maximized her teams strength with the precision of a surgeon making the right adjustments at every turn and keeping this juggernaut going. What comes across in that she has a wonderful and caring relationship with her players and truly cares for them as if she was their mother.

The story on Ratay, the best 3 point shooter in America, getting ready for the UCONN game at Notre Dame is priceless.

The story finishes with Ruth Riley hitting 2 free throws to win the game as Purdues final shot falls short. It was just like Hoosiers when Ollie needed to hit 2 free throws to win the game for Hickory. Only three weeks earlier Riley missed one free throw against UCONN in the Big East Championship and vowed that it would never happen again.

Niele Ivey in her career at Notre Dame suffered through two knee surgeries and could not understand why her basketball career had seemingly gone so far of course. In Gods plan Niele was granted a fifth year of eligibility which allowed her to play for the National Championship in her town of ST. Louis, there is always a plan.

Imani Dumbar was all set to attend a small college when a very late call came from Notre Dame. If only she know what the future would hold for her. She was the ultimate team player.

I liked the story of Murphy, Muffets son going home with his dad after they arrived back with the team from St. Louis and having his dad stop the car on the way home to be sure that Grace Hall had the #1 lit up to celebrate the National Champs.

As Purdue final shot falls short, and the buzzer sounds chaos takes over and Nice girls finish first. Relive the final buzzer and Father Malloy hugging the winning Coach, this book tells a great story. When you finish reading this book you will feel the urge to sing "CHEER CHEER FOR OLD NOTRE DAME"!

A MUST for women's b-ball fans!.......2002-11-17

We're just beginning to see books about women's basketball, and this is one that should not be missed. Nice Girls Finish First is the story Notre Dame's championship year.
As the title hints, Notre Dame attracts athletes who are all-around people. Everybody goes to class and many athletes take a full, demanding schedule. One athlete chooses Notre Dame because "it's even better on the inside" than its shiny image on the outside.

The team consists of hardworking over-achiever. Like most basketball players, many girls came from difficult homes and overcame obstacles to get to college, let alone play on a championship team.

These books are way better than Canfield's, and
have way less errors. And they include the Italian
rifles and the ones a guy is likely to actually GET,
too, and in MUCH MORE detail.

Best and the easiest to read and understand.......2002-08-03

These are the best of the M1 books, the easiest to read and
understand, with the detail laid out in a way that anybody can
understand. And the guns he shows look like the real thing.

The notes on the gun confiscation movement and local politics bring this World War II veteran rifle into modern context, and make it very obvious what the motiviations of the antigunners really are.

Scholarly without being pretentious, I found myself absorbing techniques and information without even noticing it.
And I did most of his maintenance stuff, and it all worked. With the trouble shooting information in Thompson's other book, THE COMPLETE M1 GARAND, the books have saved me thousands of dollars and lots of hours.

He goes beyond other researchers, who seem to dig up all their stuff at the armories, the factories, and from dry delivery records, and who pay no attention to the reports of veterans and actual units in the field. This makes his work very practical. He also puts holes in some of the "stand operating b.s." and lies of the past, which someone out there is surely going to find troubling, but what he says, I found out, works, makes sense, and is the truth. He has spent a lot of time getting this stuff from gunsmiths and armorers, and a lot of it I had heard previously but discarded because it wasn't in the dry books of other authors. It seems he is right on virtually every score, and much of the "official" stuff is smokescreen. My gunsmith (who built M1's during World War II, and wound up carrying one in Korea) loves the M1, and says Thompson obviously listened to "the right guys"... He also affirms Thompson's data and analysis of the gas traps and their performance, and that everything else in the book is obviously the way it really was.

Save money, trouble, aggravations.......2002-07-25

The COMPLETE M1 GARAND and THE CLASSIC M1 GARAND are a pair of the most practical and straightforward firearms books I have ever read or seen. Most important, they saved me money, trouble, and thumbs. This writer does not fool around! Rather than elaborate charts of which 99% are useless to the typical gunnie, this guy gets to the meat, and in a hurry. And yet, the material is easy to handle.

He even covers and shows fake and real and rare and common parts, the way they ACTUALLY look, instead of all fancified and restored. I had lots of trouble with other books, where the parts arrays were new or better-than-new, and didn't seem even similar to mine.

I invested, I think, %45.00 in these books. Dollarwise, I have saved maybe $2000 or more, and a lot of problems. This guy knows the gun, knows the market, knows the parts, and tells you what you need to know, in practical, plain English, not mumbo-jumbo garbage.

I got all the M1 books. This one is the easiest to use, and makes more sense than all the others together.

Classic ? Hardly...................2002-06-17

While the M1 Garand is certainly a classic american rifle this book hardly rates in the same catagory.

As a new M1 owner I was looking for a book full of technical information on operation and maintenance along with some history. This book is short on all of the above but very long on attitude. Mr. Thompson makes his opinions clear on everything from his local police department to the general state of world affairs. I do not dispute the validity, or factuality, of Mr. Thompsons statements. I would be more than willing to sit down and discuss them. I do not, however, enjoy spending my hard earned money on a book entitled "The Classic M1 Garand" which is overly rife with page upon page of geo-political posturing.

The book is actually pretty scant on technical data and most of the photos are too dark and unfocused to be of any real value. This book is simply too full of useless information. I had intended to purchase Mr. Thompsons previous book, The Complete M1 Garand. Since I don't believe in throwing good money after bad I think I'll pass.

I suggest that you do the same.

A Wonderful Book About a Beautiful Rifle........2002-05-27

Between the covers of "The Classic M1 Garand" by Jim Thompson, lies the intertwined stories of many whose lives have been touched by the legacy of this beautiful rifle. The opening pages tell the sensitive, true story of two men touched by time and linked by family, who had lived through two different wars. They grew to discover another thing which they had in common was their respect for the M1 Garand, a weapon that for each of them served to retain the memories of a time and place too horrible to remember...... and too much a part of what they were as men, to forget.
I am not a gun collector or a shooter. I am merely a woman who has had the incredible luck to browse through this excellently composed book which is full of history. The descriptions of the birth and re birth of the M1 are perfect in their detail and interesting in that the author weaves anecdotes and personal stories into the factual data. This is a wonderful way to keep the reader's attention riveted. It is apparant that this weapon has been around the world in it's various incarnations, each of them given ample space for photographs and exacting descriptions. And , speaking of photographs, this book is full of them. Many more so than I would have thought to find. There are photos of the various parts, markings and accessories to the gun and many pictures dedicated to the beauty of the rifle itself. Believe me, it is a wonderful machine with it's clean lines and spare design. Gorgeous wood and shining metal. This M1 Garand is a beautiful piece of art. It is no wonder that the M1 Garand is sought after by collectors the world over! The author, Jim Thompson, is credited with several of the photographs and appears in some as well. He is as capable an artist with the camera as he is with the pen. I enjoyed reading and looking through "The Classic M1 Garand", and will keep it visible to all who come to my home. It has become my newest and most treasured coffee table book. Thank you Mr. Thompson. Please write more books......for a long time to come.
