Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2005-09-11
It's a text book with lots of great examples of business challenges. I was required to purchase this book for my class but I also enjoy reading it (as much as I could any textbook) because the concepts are pretty easy to understand. There are also a lot of internet resources to enhance understanding of the concepts.
>Government,
.......2003-11-05
This book concentrates on govermental accounting, and really only has two chapters that specifically apply to non-profit accounting.
Introduction to Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting.......2000-08-31
I would rate this book very highly for the non-accounting professional. The book takes the high level of technical terms and reduces it so that it is user friendly for all groups of business professionals.
I would strongly recommend this book to those readers who have a basic understanding of governmental accounting.

Description:
Agri-environment measures cover at least 20% of the EU's farmland, a proportion rising to approximately 30% in Ireland. A study, investigating effects on biodiversity of Ireland's Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS) is described. Field margin flora and Carabidae (ground beetle) fauna were surveyed on 60 paired agreement and non-agreement farms. Greater variation was observed amongst surveyed non-agreement farms: the most species-rich and species-poor farms were all non-agreement. On surveyed grassland farms, average plant species richness was significantly higher on non-agreement than on agreement farms. Otherwise, few differences between average species richness and abundance on agreement and non-agreement farms were revealed. In ordination analysis of the flora and carabidae data factors largely independent of recent management, such as hedge age and gappiness, were most important in explaining observed variation. The study concluded that the scheme has not significantly benefited the groups surveyed, and suggests that the generic measures in such horizontal schemes may be better suited to addressing landscape-level issues such as water pollution, with biodiversity objectives for high nature value areas being more effectively achieved by targeted zonal schemes. Baseline data and long-term monitoring of measurable objectives are essential for effective evaluation, both to better tailor these innovative schemes to their aims, and to clearly demonstrate their benefits.

Book Description
Over the last half of century interferon (IFN), originally discovered as an antiviral protein, has developed from an inhibitor of viral replication to a major force in the antiviral response. Initially studied only by few virologists, IFN was generally considered as a poorly defined protein of limited importance. The development of molecular techniques lead to the identification of a family of IFN genes and has shown an unexpected complexity of type I IFN genes and their expression. Presently, some aspects of the of the pathogen mediated induction of IFN gene expression are understood at molecular level, while others are still at the stage of description. Both Toll like receptors and cytoplasmic RNA helicases were shown to recognize viral nucleic acids and the basis of a distinct recognition of viral nucleic acids from the cellular ones are emerging. Important insights on the virus recognition entity, leading to the expression of interferon and interferon induced genes, have been made in the recent year, which are challenging the accepted concept of the critical role of dsRNA in IFN induction. The availability of genetically modified mice that are lacking either essential components of the interferon inducing pathway, or interferon signaling pathway fully confirmed the original idea, made soon after its discovery, that interferon is the first cellular defense against viral infection.

Book Description
Surface Science is understood as a relatively young scientific discipline, concerned with the physical and chemical properties of phenomena on clean and covered solid surfaces, studied under a variety of conditions. The adsorption of atoms and molecules on solid surfaces is, for example, such a condition, connected with more or less drastic changes of all surface properties. An adsorption event is frequently observed in nature and found to be of technical importance in many industrial processes. For this reason, Surface Science is interdisciplinary by its very nature, and as such an important intermediary between fundamental and applied research.

Book Description
The first textbook on Bose-Einstein correlations and their applications, an interdisciplinary topic bridging particle physics and quantum physics, and currently the centre of considerable interest in high energy physics. Besides its fundamental importance for particle physics, this phenomenon constitutes the main tool for the determination of sizes and lifetimes of particle sources.
The contents of this book are divided into the following chapters, each of which concludes with exercises designed to test the reader's understanding of the concepts and theories included therein:
The Foundations; Hadron Interferometry; Currents; Sources; Applications to Ultrarelativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions; Correlations and Multiplicity Distributions; Photos versus Hadrons.
It provides the first systematic analysis and comparison of the different theoretical approaches to the subject and will be invaluable to theorists and experimentalists in particle and nuclear physics, quantum optics and astrophysics.

For bitter idiots.......2004-12-27
You people who wrote good reviews here for this book are too easily amused. A casual acquantaince I know bought this book thinking she'd get revenge on a guy that hurt her. I was really interested in her. But she's obsessed with this stupid book. I finally realized how bitter and idiotic she was when I picked up the book and read the moronic tripe in it. This author is an evil fool, playing on the hurt and vulnerable of the world, giving them a false sense of power, and worst yet keeping them down by prolonging whatever sense of injuring they have been dealt or think they have endured. The last draw came when she wanted to implement me in her scheme for revenge. I wish her well, but she's in this deep now and quite frankly not worth it. I still subscribe that the best revenge is living well! Why make the insult you might have had the center of your life by making revenge such a goal? Seriously, what the hell does that do? Usually stupid, indiffernt, hurtful people fall flat on their faces sooner or later. Where do you want to be when you see that? In a better place or finding out you've become them in character as well? Robert Adams has only contributed to the all too hight level of stupidity in this world. Go read some Vincent Peale for positive thinking instead. You'll be much more emotionally happier. I'm a firm believer in Karma. It definitely goes around and comes around eventually! Remember, sometimes unfortunately bad things happen to good people. Just don't become a bad person because of it! But bad revisits evil orders of magnitude higher. Evil only attracts itself. Peace be with you always!
No need to read beyond the title.......2004-11-25
very short book... not even funny author rants about getting back at people who wrong you but without any substance or story.. he siply places the how to in the chapter line and then talks about how they will squirm from your revenge... This is a pointless book like a joke without a punch line don't waste your money and disregard the pre-canned reviews above.
Revenge can be fun.......2004-10-10
Has someone ever taken advantage of you? Has someone used you without so much as a backward glance? Are you tired of this treatment? Robert D. Adams presents a satirical look at extracting revenge on those who spitefully misuse you in HOW TO GET REVENGE AND LOVE IT. Although the book carries a warning that it is for adult entertainment only, the humorous look at getting revenge hits pretty close to home in many instances. The reader is presented with twenty-two chapters, some of which are comically named such as chapter ten, "How To Drive A Selfish Woman Crazy, And Make her Love Your Last Year's Dirty Drawers." Each chapter covers a different scenario in which revenge should be sought and the step-by-step instructions on how to go about doing it.
Although very funny and entertaining, Adams's message is clear: do not let people use you. There is no reason for you to accept it. Get yours and feel good doing it. His revenge schemes were often things we think about doing, but may fail to put into action. One such plot was his advice in "How To Break It Off When The Love Smells Stinky," which calls for failing to attend to domestic issues in order to get the object of the revenge to leave. I actually found myself laughing out loud at some of the schemes, while a few others took me down memory lane. As entertaining as I found the book, it could have benefited from some additional editing and I found that some of the language could be construed as offensive. Despite that, for an enlightening and humorous ride, pick up a copy of this book, but pay careful attention to the warning on the front cover. (3.5 Rating)

A meticulous study of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the principal architect of victory in the Pacific during World War II.
Customer Reviews:
The Story of America's Greatest Admiral and his Men.......2005-02-24
After the Pearl Harbor disaster, President Roosevelt decided to relieve Admiral Husband Kimmel of his Pacific Fleet command. Many thought that Kimmel was made out to be a scapegoat and did not deserve to be relieved, but Roosevelt felt that a new commander was needed to lift America out of the ashes of Pearl harbor and begin the road to ultimate victory. The man chosen for the task was Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.
Nimitz was chosen over many higher-ranking officers, but in the end, Nimitz proved to be the perfect choice to lead the American Navy. Blessed with a keen sense of fairness to his fellow man, this fine book examines Nimitz and his admirals and how they ultimately won the war in the Pacific.
Although Nimitz was considered a "calm tower of strength" and the principal architect of victory in the Pacific, he could not have accomplished this feat alone. His choices of supporting staff members and Admirals are the ones who, in the end, helped win the war for the United States.
This book examines many of Nimitz' Admirals, but four really stand out above the rest: Ray Spruance, Bill Halsey, Kelly Turner, and Marc Mitscher. Halsey was the fire and brimstone commander who fearlessly took on the Japanese in the early days of the war. He also said that after he was finished, the only place where the Japanese language would be spoken was in hell. Spruance was the antithesis of Halsey. Calm and cerebral, Spruance endeared himself to Nimitz with his careful consideration of the task at hand. It was said that Halsey could win a battle, but Spruance could win a campaign. Turner was cut from the same mold as Halsey. Fearless and intimidating, even to a fault, Turner was the architect of the brilliant amphibious landings of the war. Meanwhile, Mitscher was in charge of the fast carriers and endeared himself to his fliers by lighting up his entire force's lights to help bring the boys home after a nighttime raid against the Japanese. In the end, it was Nimitz' use of these important men that ultimately won the war for the United States.
This book, written by historian Edwin P. Hoyt, does a fine job of explaining the transition of the U.S. Navy from a weakened and busted fleet early in the war to the offensive juggernaut that it became by the time of Japan's surrender. Each important naval battle is discussed, and the role of Nimitz and his commanders is explained. Form the dark days of January 1942 to the ultimate victory in September 1945, Nimitz' navy fought the Japanese tooth and nail, and, more often than not, came out on top. The book also discusses the inter-service rivalries that existed between the Army and Navy, as well as the rise of the "young turks", or the Naval Aviator Flag Officers. I recommend this book very highly. It does a very good job of explaining Nimitz' role in the Pacific war, as well as that of his commanders. Read it and learn about one of the greatest commanders and leaders our country has ever had.
How They Won the War in the Pacific, Hoyt.......2003-01-18
Outstanding history of the war in the Pacific. Great profiles of Nimitz, Fletcher, Halsey, Spruance, and others. Easy to read. I hated to finish it!
Not very informative.......2002-03-11
The U.S. command in the pacific theater is one of the most underreported of the war. And yet this command was the most innovative of any command of any power in WWII. They invented a totally new type of warfare and quickly learned to execute it exceptionally well.
And they also made do with so little, winning Midway and holding Guadacanal by the skin of their teeth. The ability to know exactly where to fight and how is an incredible story.
Does this book get that? Yes, some of it. But for a book that revolves around this, it gets suprisingly little. The U.S. submarine fleet sunk half the Japanese ships and basically isolated Japan from it's raw material sources. Yet it's not mentioned in this book.
Add to that no real mention of how the Navy learned to develop amphibious warfare and to combine that with strong carrier support. And what you are left with is another book that just goes through the main battles of the pacific war, with a bit more emphasis on the admirals in charge.
Nimitz and his admirals.......2001-01-09
Excellent detailed review of WW II in the Pacific with all the personalities and "backstabbing" of the commanders that went on.Much of the details were not released to the media at the time. Many of the leaders mentioned went on to become the Chief of Naval Operations later on. I had the privelege of calling on Nimitz and his wife in 1963 and he related the story of his ship grounding detailled in the book. This book was "released" in 1970. Why is it so late (2000) in being published? Would loved to have read it before meeting Nimitz and his son.Could have used more maps of some of the places being discussed.

Book Description
Campbell presents a study of the lives and experiences of Europeans and Americans in the age of early industrial overseas expansions, who became detatched from their own societies and lived, sometimes for many years, among Pacific Islanders as integrated members of their communities, often with little hope of returning home and frequently with no wish to do so. As engaging as primitivism was to European philosophers, the realities of contact between seafarers and islanders who faced previously unimagined technological and human marvels were much more pragmatic. Jealousy, ethnocentrism, and violence on both sides competed with humanitarian interests and indigenous hospitality to shape the emerging pattern of relationships. At first, Europeans crossed the oceans only for compelling reasons: the passion for scientific research, the dedication to Christian evangelism, or the uncompromising profit motive. Later, settlers and government officials followed in the wake of these early explorers. Scattered in the interstices of contact relationships were large numbers of men whose interest was not in changing native society or profiting from it, but in experiencing primitive life and simply surviving itself. These men included castaways and deserters, some abandoned by their captains and others kidnapped by the islanders. Their prospects depended on their successful integration into Polynesian society--and in making themselves useful by applying European knowledge and skills to local situations and by mediating between islanders and their insistent visitors.

A MOST IMPORTANT BOOK FOR MANKIND.......2007-01-10
I first read this book while on a teaching assignment in Taiwan and I have since re-read the work more than once. As a student of philosophy I find it a brilliant study of the history of science and epistemology. Berman backs his work with hundreds of references to ancient texts and modern works on psychology from some of the foremost thinkers in their fields and ties his narrative together with interesting historical anecdotes that you hardly believe (For instance, that Isaac Newton started his career as an alchemist). In "The Reenchantment of the World" Morris lays out his theories of how our understanding of the world in Western Civilization has changed from one of a participating consciousness to hollow detachment and some of the undesirable consequences that have come about as a result.
The Reenchantment is the first book in a marvelous trilogy I would recommend to anyone interested in the cutting edges of philosophy, psychology and ethics today. Never before or since have I read such a compelling call to change in the way civilization is evolving and the only criticism I may make of this work is that it doesn't lay out clearly enough in practical terms the steps that we can take to correct our course and avert a disater for humanity, perhaps because this may not be possible given our current state of affairs.
Heaven on Earth.......2003-07-15
An examination of how science is predatory of other cosmologies. Ever wonder how and why we subordinate all other modes of knowing to the scientific mode? How we expect science to solve all the problems created by our misuse of science? How the natural world was purged of "God?" Read this book.
Interesting from a Historical Perspective.......2001-12-22
This is the first "New Age" book I read - in 1990 or so - so alot of the concepts were new to me then. I would recommend this book if you are interested in the history of ideas, since Berman paints a pretty stark picture of the world as a machine versus the world as a organisms, or something alive. I particularly enjoyed reading about Newton's role as an alchemist. There are some streches here, but even if you don't "buy into" those stretches it still makes compelling reading. The book is well illustrated. The cover of the first edition paperback, by the way, is much more interesting than the new cover.

Excellent work, highly recommended........2001-06-18
Far from being antiscientific, with definitive precision Berman demonstrates the neurotic distortions that the Cartesian paradigm has set in motion, revealing his visionary comprehension of the human experience and his insight into the entire Man, mind, body and soul.
He treats Newton with all fairness, unmoved by the applause of the sterile masses of University elite which have elevated the man to Godhood throughout the centuries. As the psalmist says, "What is Man but a breath that passes?...Where were you when I laid the foundations of the deep?"
Any world veiw that forgets this human composition must necessarily lead to severe disruption of the human family. Science, divorced from reason, wisdom tradition, and high theology, and the objective methods upon which it was founded, will lead to an impoverishing rationalism that starves the soul. It will become a sort of false magic entrancing men with debasing theories, desecting Man into a mere biologic product. Hence the rise of mass genocides in the 20th century.
This was an excellent read which deeply effected the course of my studies for years.

Avihu Zakai analyzes Jonathan Edwards's redemptive mode of historical thought in the context of the Enlightenment. As theologian and philosopher, Edwards has long been a towering figure in American intellectual history. Nevertheless, and despite Edwards's intense engagement with the nature of time and the meaning of history, there has been no serious attempt to explore his philosophy of history. Offering the first such exploration, Zakai considers Edwards's historical thought as a reaction, in part, to the varieties of Enlightenment historical narratives and their growing disregard for theistic considerations.
Zakai analyzes the ideological origins of Edwards's insistence that the process of history depends solely on God's redemptive activity in time as manifested in a series of revivals throughout history, reading this doctrine as an answer to the threat posed to the Christian theological teleology of history by the early modern emergence of a secular conception of history and the modern legitimation of historical time. In response to the Enlightenment refashioning of secular, historical time and its growing emphasis on human agency, Edwards strove to re-establish God's preeminence within the order of time. Against the de-Christianization of history and removal of divine power from the historical process, he sought to re-enthrone God as the author and lord of history--and thus to re-enchant the historical world.
Placing Edwards's historical thought in its broadest context, this book will be welcomed by those who study early modern history, American history, or religious culture and experience in America.
Customer Reviews:
Most persuasive argument.......2003-04-25
The author clearly situates Edwards in his historical and intellectual context. He shows where Edwards comes from, what traditions he confronts, and the dialectic between his history and providentialism. Very intelligent, very readable. A superb history.
