Lotus Domino offers fantastic power to organizations that want to manage communication so that news and ideas get to the people who need them with minimal hassle, both in terms of user trouble and administrator effort. Lotus Domino Administration in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference is designed to ease the Notes administrator's job even further, by providing a concise list of tools and procedures that come into play during the setup and day-to-day operation of a Notes environment. This book won't be much help to you if you're completely new to Notes, but it may well save your day if you work with multiple groupware environments (perhaps as a consultant) or if you've been called on to make a structural change in a Notes installation that's gone generally untouched for some time. It'll also back you up if you're fresh from Notes training and need help on the job.
This book excels in its documentation of command-line utilities and the entries that appear in the NOTES.INI file. The latter occupies nearly a third of this book, which lists every possible entry that the NOTES.INI parser understands. Each entry appears with its proper syntax, as well as its legal values. You'll find well-reasoned descriptions of each entry as well, along with references to related entries. Documentation of utilities (which are categorized by functional unit such as mail) is similar. --David Wall
Topics covered: The tools and settings with which administrators of Lotus Notes need to be familiar. Sections explain the Notes database infrastructure, its methods of routing and tracking mail, and its performance-monitoring utilities. More focused sections show how Notes works with the Domino environment, Domino Enterprise Connection Services (DECS), and Internet Cluster Manager (ICM). A long section documents NOTES.INI values.
Book Description
Domino is one of the most effective platforms for developing and deploying e-business applications, allowing new communities of developers to enjoy its collaborative capabilities. With over 55 million seats worldwide, Domino already provided a strong foundation for messaging and web applications, and the release of R5 builds on that to make Domino easier to use than ever before. For example, Lotus Domino R5 has been expanded to interact with most browsers and other non-Notes clients, so developers can choose their favorite language to design web applications. With R5, administrators can centrally modify client configurations instead of hopping from one terminal to the next throughout the company. The new Domino interface allows administrators to visually monitor the health and status of the Domino servers in a network from a single screen. All this capability implies complexity, and it's easy to forget which menu to go to. Here's where Lotus Domino Administration in a Nutshell can help. It's a quick reference that will come in handy again and again for finding solutions to administrative problems. This book covers:
- Domino architecture and key concepts
- R5 administration tools
- Domino directory and console commands
- Database properties and Access Control
- Configuring Domino Enterprise Connection Services (DECS)
- Supporting the Notes client
- Domino for IIS
Whether the task is messaging servers, modifying administration tasks to a simpler and more efficient level, or ensuring the security and flexibility of a web application server, Lotus Domino Administration in a Nutshell is the reference developers need to make the most of this reliable and scalable integrated server platform.

A must have book.......2003-07-25
Always keep this book within arms reach. Not for the inexperienced. If you know Domino Administration and know how to use this book, it can be your bible. Everyone on my team has one on their bookshelf.
Needs editing. Rough draft quality. Painfull to read........2001-07-04
This book needs editing. Much more akin to a first rough draft than a finished version ready for print. Painfull to read, it definetely does not live up to the high standards of other O'REILLY books I've read. The book covers a lot of information in a condensed format but unfortunetly has the following shortcomings (listed in order of seriousness):
1) the author often uses very poor sentence structure making absorbing the information difficult. I found myself editing the book so that the meaning would be clearer.
2) many of the screenshots in the book are illegible. There are techniques and tricks for making screenshots high enough quality for print. The screenshots in the book are low quality.
3) the author on occasion uses terms & acronyms before defining them. Sometimes they are not defined.
The best book i have ever seen.......2001-01-06
This is not a book for beginners. With a bit of Notes experience, this book gives me what i need. This book is a MUST for all administrators.
Good Reference.......2000-08-26
This is a good book for the experienced and inexperienced Notes administrator. The author, Greg Neilson, obviously has experience in large Lotus/Domino installations, where Lotus-invented procedures frequently break down.
The book is geared towards R5, so it's handy for 4.5/4.6 admins who are making the transition. Many screen captures, lots of tables and tips. [...]

The Barter Bible: A Guide to Increase Your Cash Flow Using Barter
ASIN: 0262133997 |
Book Description
Difficulties in contract enforcement impede international transactions in the world economy and domestic transactions in transition economies. In Contracts in Trade and Transition, Dalia Marin and Monika Schnitzer explain how barter as an economic institution can facilitate contract enforcement across national borders in international trade and within borders in transition countries. The authors show that international countertrade--tying an export to an import--emerged in the 1980s in response to the international debt crisis when Western creditors refused to finance imports to developing countries and Eastern Europe. Barter--the exchange of goods without the use of money--reemerged in transition economies in the 1990s in response to a domestic debt crisis when banks in transition countries were reluctant to provide finance to firms. Countertrade and barter introduce a deal-specific form of collateral that addresses the lack of creditworthiness of countries and firms.
Drawing on contract theory, the authors argue that parties might want to pay in goods rather than cash or link an export with an import as in countertrade to solve incentive problems that otherwise would prevent any trade from taking place. The incentive problems they discuss are the technology transfer problem to developing countries and the "lack of trust" problem in the former Soviet Union.

Book Description
Traditionally the province of chemists, the problem of environmental pollution is increasingly being tackled using methodologies which have a biological basis. This volume provides a range of examples of how biotechnology can offer sensitive and ecologically-relevant new ways of monitoring the presence of biohazards in our environment and, once detected, how these biohazards can be removed in an ecologically safe way through bioremediation. Additional chapters on economic, legislative and policy aspects set the topic in its social context, resulting in a broad-ranging volume of value to all those concerned with the science of ecologically effective environmental protection and management.

Book Description
The sisters at the Good Shepherd Convent in Dublin's North Wall don't quite know what to make of their newest refugee. Philo announces herself at their door one Sunday evening with the words, God pointed me here. A large presence, weighing 240 pounds and bearing tattoos on her arm, Philo smokes, swears, and loves to eat. She is also a mother of five and in flight from her abusive husband, Tommo. In no time at all, Philo has made herself indispensable. At the senior Daycare Center, she gets the old folks talking to one another, singing old favorites, and playing bingo again. And with all the love she's got to give, it's only natural that she helps Cap and Dinatwo people at the Center long separated by a bitter feudcome together again. By turns comical and tender, Peter Sheridan's novel is a beautifully written portrait of an unforgettable woman who touches everyone she meets through the sheer force of being herself.

Every Inch of Her.......2005-08-20
Light read, not very believable nor well-written. Should go back to reading Maeve Binchy.....the ultimate writer of Irish women.
A beautifully written, humorous tale of overcoming the past.......2004-10-02
Philomena Nolan is an abused housewife and mother living among Ireland's working class in Peter Sheridan's EVERY INCH OF HER. The highlight of this novel is Philo and what makes her tick. She's one of those characters who will warm a person's heart, leaving an impression upon the reader and making her very unlikely to forget.
Her circumstances in life are not great. She has just run away from her husband and children to seek comfort at a convent, pretending to be a single woman without children. She tries to talk her way into the convent by claiming she has always wanted to be a nun. The tattoos on her body as well as her large size and gruff attitude make them a little nervous at first, but the nuns take her in, at least temporarily.
Appearances are often deceiving, and it is so with Philo. Her outward appearance may be that of a tough, crude woman, but in reality she has a heart of gold. Despite her personal problems, Philo finds ways to make others happy. She's a wonderful nurturer, and although not all of the nuns at the convent warm up to her right away, she eventually finds her way into everyone's heart --- at the convent and anywhere she goes.
Philo has many vices. She's a chain smoker, and living at the convent means that no smoking is allowed. She sneaks the cigarettes with the help of Sister Rosaleen, a nun who takes Philo under her wing, despite the disapproval of some of the other nuns. Philo and Sister Rosaleen bond and become good friends and co-conspirators at the convent, making for some very funny scenes throughout the novel.
Philo's other vice is food. Her mother has taught her that eating will always make her feel better. So if she's unhappy, she eats --- and she eats a lot. As Philo's weight approaches three hundred pounds, it is safe to say that food is always on her mind. Sneaking in bacon and eggs in the middle of the night while the rest of the world sleeps, or eating a handful of candy bars to pass the time, is a daily occurrence. She eats all she can during the wee hours of the morning, and then sleeps the food off in the morning. It is her way of coping with the many worries of her world.
Her main source of concern is her husband Tommo. He constantly berates her in front of the children, and has given her a black eye or two. Yet, when Philo runs away from him and the family, he always comes back to her, begging her to return, telling her that he's lonely and needs her. When Philo runs away this time, she refuses to return, despite the fact that Tommo has gotten rid of the children and placed them in an orphanage. Philo knows that the children are better off without their parents, yet she misses them so much. However, she thinks it's best that she stay in the convent to keep her children and herself safe from Tommo.
In the meantime, Philo's life is now centered on the convent. During the day she helps out at a senior citizens center, where she and the nuns help prepare food. With love and inspiration, Philo performs miracles at the center, creating new life and energy among the elderly, giving them newfound happiness. She gets them involved in Bingo, with the help of Sister Rosaleen, as well as a crazy game called Blind Date. From here, a subplot emerges --- that of the love story of two elderly persons at the center, Cap Coyle and Dina Sugrue, who have known each other for decades but have been sworn enemies due to a history that involves Cap's best friend Gerry, who later became Dina's husband.
Philo's life takes on new meaning as she helps out at the Senior Center, visits her children when she can, and plays matchmaker with Cap and Dina. But once again, Tommo reappears in her life, and it's not good.
One cannot say enough about EVERY INCH OF HER. It is beautifully written, told with a touch of humor. Sheridan does a good job at describing life in the North Wall, which can be hard, but there are plenty of friends and family to help one get through the day. It is a tale of one person's desire to survive, to find happiness, and to overcome insecurities and demons from the past. Highly recommended.

EVERY INCH OF HER by Peter Sheridan
September 24, 2004
Here is a wonderful tale of a survivor, Philo Dolan, and her story is told in EVERY INCH OF HER. Peter Sheridan creates a lovable character in Philo, who despite all her problems, makes sure that everyone around her is happy and being taken care of.
In the first chapter, Philo arrives at a local convent, seeking a place to stay. She has left her husband and children, but does not tell this to the nuns. She lets them believe she's a single woman wanting to become one of them. The nuns, however, find it hard to believe, especially by looking at Philo's huge body covered with tattoos, and hearing that between every few sentences are uttered a foul word. Philo keeps forgetting that nuns do not swear.
She also forgets that nuns do not smoke, and Philo is a chain smoker. She is also a compulsive eater, and at close to 250 pounds, she still cannot seem to stop. She eats to help forget her own problems, that of her abusive husband, the children she has left behind, and her past, which she wishes no one to find out about.
Philo is not one to give up, however. She always makes the best of a situation, and now that she lives at the convent, she does her best to fit in by helping out. Her crowning achievement is helping out at the senior citizen's center, and between herself and her new best friend Sister Rosaleen, they get the seniors blood stirring with a few rowdy games of bingo and a game of BLIND DATE.
All good things do come to an end and Tommo, Philo's husband, tracks her down at the convent. Does Philo return to him and her children, or will she stand up to him and stay with the nuns?
EVERY INCH OF HER was a delight to read. Philo was a character that was easy to love, and it was fun to read about her antics. She's quite a personality, with her faults and vices but yet written in such a fashion that one cannot help but want to meet her. Sheridan also did a good job at painting a picture of the Irish working class. This book reminds one somewhat of ANGELA'S ASHES, another sad tale told in a humorous tone. Not told in quite the same epic scale as ANGELA'S ASHES, but just as memorable.
Mighty fine reading........2004-09-06
Delightful working-class Irish romp that packs a punch in quite a few ways. Funny, insightful, mordant and eminently readable. I'll be reading more Sheridan.
Book Description
This memoir from the former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, now revised and updated, offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at how war is fought today.
In Waging Modern War, General Wesley K. Clark recounts his experience leading NATO's forces to a hard-fought and ultimately successful victory in Kosovo in 1999. As the American military machine has swung into action in the months following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, it has become clear that the lessons of Kosovo are directly applicable to the war against terrorism and the nations that sponsor it.
The problems posed, and overcome, in the war in Kosovo--how to fight an air war against unconventional forces in rough terrain and how to coordinate U.S. objectives with those of other nations--are the problems that America increasingly faces in the today's world. As the Los Angeles Times noted in late September of 2001, this book's "lessons are highly relevant now.... We need to think about exactly what steps will lessen, rather than increase, the terrorist threat. And we also need innovative commanders willing to improvise to meet a new kind of threat, more determined political leadership, a more flexible outlook in the Pentagon.... Gen. Clark has performed another service by highlighting these problems at a crucial moment in American history. "
Waging Modern War is history, memoir, guidebook, and forecast, essential reading for those who want to know how modern war is fought, and won.
Customer Reviews:
Insider account of the Balkans crisis.......2007-01-13
This book is formally an autobiography, but pays scant attention to the first 50 years or so of the author's life. Instead, Clark has written a strong account of his involvement in the two Yugoslav wars that took place in the 90s; first the Bosnia war, where he worked as a military adviser to Richard Holbrooke, and then his role as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in the Kosovo war a few years later.
These two roles gave Clark insight into the interactions of the objecives, often quite distinct, of military and political leaders. This was particularly true of his work as SACEUR (NATO commander), where he was the focal point of that tension, reporting to the defense ministers and heads of state of the various nations while leading the various armed forces. He also has a good deal to say about the practical issues in integrating units from different countries in a single operation, along with the longstanding problems of integrating the capabilities of the traditionally rival American services. This was, for me, the most informative part of the book, and would certainly make it essential reading for any officer or diplomat interested in this topic.
Clark also has a good deal to say about the institutional problems he had in Washington and the Pentagon. The Pentagon leadership, in particular, hostile to the idea of fighting an enemy that wasn't in the Middle East or East Asia and even more hostile to the current President, undermined Clark repeatedly and then, when the war was successfully completed anyway, arranged for his reward to be getting fired.
The book was clearly actually written by Clark without use of a ghost. This isn't always an advantage - Clark lack's the professional writer's eye for the telling detail so instead sometimes gives us too many details that add up to too little information. But in the end, a book written by the actual actor in these events tells us more than a book written with a smoother style by a ghost.
Something to upset everyone.......2005-12-09
General (ret) Wesley Clark's recollections of events leading up to the 1999 bombing campaign against Serbia truly has something to upset or annoy everyone.
Before we go into the details of all the various fashions in which GEN Clark can make everyone unhappy, let us consider the context of the publication of this book. The book was published in 2001, shortly after he was fired for his performance as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), both the military commander of NATO and the senior U.S. military officer in Europe. At that point, it seems likely that he was already considering his attempt to run for the Presidency. And limiting what he could say would be (hopefully) a desire to continue to protect classified information that he was in possession of as a general in the U.S. military. So we see indications that this work could be a self-aggrandizing apologia with a gag-order.
The first thing that can upset folks. GEN Clark personally pressured, directly and indirectly, the U.S. to rush into a European war in the Balkans. A constant theme through the text is that both military and civil leaders (including President Clinton) were very reluctant to get the U.S. more deeply involved in the troubles in the Balkans, and very, very reluctant to enter another war. GEN Clark repeatedly appealed to them to use military power to force Serbia under Milosovic to change his internal policies. He also went to directly to the media with his message and through public opinion forced elected leaders and their appointed representatives to comply to his (GEN Clark's) intent. The other interpretation of this is that GEN Clark was the only American leader that *really* cared about the Kosovars and their plight at the hands of the Serbs.
The second thing that should upset people. GEN Clark never mentions any attempt to find out why the Serbs were conducting operations in Kosovo. If, at the very first allegation of violence in Kosovo, GEN Clark and the NATO leadership had made a concerted effort to find out why the Serbs were doing what they were doing, they would have found out that the Kosovo Liberation Army were terrorists and heroin smugglers. This suggests many approaches to resolving the conflict without resorting to a bombing campaign. The Serbs were demonized from the first moment that events bagan to unfold in Kosovo, and never offered a solution other than "stop that or we shoot".
The third thing to upset everyone: GEN Clark put European interests ahead of U.S. interests. GEN Clark relates that Javier Solana, Sec. Gen. of NATO, expressed that failure to act in Kosovo would jepordize the existence of NATO, and that this could not be allowed. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, NATO has been floundering in search of relevance, and has evolved into more of an economic club than a true military defensive alliance. Ultimately, NATO is of much greater benefit to it's European members than the U.S. By supporting Solana's objectives, GEN Clark put NATO and European interests ahead of U.S. national security. The counter argument is that Europe's security is America's security, but with the competing interests and lack of agreement inside Europe, this argument is a sweeping generality, a great sound bite, but devoid of substance.
The fourth thing that should upset absolutely anyone: The bombing campaign was in its second month before NATO sat down and tryed to hash out what the objective, the goal, the desired outcome was. If an Army colonel were to begin a lower level operation (say with 2000-3000 soldiers) without a clear endstate, a concise discription of his/her desired outcome, that colonel would be relieved on the spot. If a four-star general begins an operation without a clear objective, a stated goal, well... GEN Clark seemed to take it for granted that this was OK.
On the other side of the ledger, the book is engaging and well written. The events are laid out chronologically and with enough detail to make it flow well. Despite the constant name dropping, the material was engaging and comprehensive. It also is an education into the inner workings of NATO, and the relationship between SACEUR, the Pentagon, and the President. It doesn't quite give a day by day description of the attack on Serbia, but would be an excellent resource for filling in the blanks behind a dry, academic history of the conflict. This will be an essential work for future historians of the post-Yugoslavia Balkans.
If you have to read this book, buy it used and save some $.......2005-05-22
This is not a book, but a rambling memoir filled with too many personal comments of little substance. Do not expect an objective analysis as to the causes or the events surrounding the Kosovo conflict. Nor expect a CLEAR or INSIGHTFUL book on how military decisions are made and executed.
Any value this book may have had in describing the decision making process between the US military and its political leadership was buried in the almost constant self complementary remarks.
The lessons of Kosovo.......2005-01-25
"Waging Modern War," by Wesley K. Clark, is an account of the 1999 NATO military action in Kosovo from the perspective of the author, an American army general who oversaw the operation. Clark notes that this book is "a personal memoir" and is not intended to be "a complete record of the war." Included as supplemental features are a "Cast of Characters," with descriptions of over 60 individuals from the international group of people involved in the story; a list of the abbreviations used; a map; and an index.
This is a gripping text that, at times, I found very difficult to put down. It's a fascinating look at war from the perspective of a general near the very top of the chain of command. Among the many issues Clark touches on are the following: the complexity of dealing with an international military alliance; humanitarian concerns; relations between military and civilian officials; and the role of the media. He touches in particular on the complexity of his "double-hatted" role in both the NATO and U.S. military structures. He also discusses some of his life before the Kosovo crisis.
Particulary interesting are his memories of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, whom Clark describes early in the book as "a supremely manipulative liar and bully." Milosevic emerges as a wily, fascinating true-life villain. Equally noteworthy is Clark's account of his working relationship with NATO Secretary General Javier Solana, a former Spanish government minister. Clark shows how personalities, as well as terrain, tactics, and weaponry, impact a war.
This is a lengthy (479 plus XLV pages) and dense text; Clark hits you with a blizzard of facts, names, and acronyms. The book may be daunting to general readers, but I believe that those who take the time to read it carefully will be rewarded. "Waging" is not just a memoir, but also a theoretical work on modern war using the Kosovo campaign as a textbook example. As the Iraq war continues and people speculate on what future wars could embroil us, I believe that civilian and military leaders could benefit from the knowledge and insights in this important book.
I don't sell many of my books..........2004-12-14
but this one I had no trouble parting with. I purchased this book shortly after it was released, long before General Clark made his bid for the Democratic nomination. I've tried to complete it twice, but cannot bear to finish it. It's just too much celebration of General Clark and not enough discussion of events in his life or the the context of those events. It's a dissapointment , because General Clark is obviously intelligent, and has the resume to provide an interesting read.

From the migrations of Homo erectus to the exploration of space, man has continually reached beyond his natural boundaries to discover unknown lands. Follow the footsteps of Alexander the Great's epic military expedition through central Asia and India; voyage to the south of the American continent and learn how Magellan discovered the strait that bears his name; travel to the United States, where Lewis and Clark explored the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains; and journey to the Antarctic to witness the bittersweet race between Scott and Amundsen to reach the South Pole.
In addition, hand-drawn maps and expedition journals chronicle the gradual discovery of the world through the eyes and voices of the individuals who turned their backs on conventional society to embrace the unknown.

From cavemen to spacemen.......2004-06-03
This beautifully and intelligibly formatted oversized book surveys the adventurous from the earliest hominids to the astronauts, with 640 photographs, including 90 maps.
An anecdotal text may encourage interested readers to more detailed accounts (a bibliography lists sources by chapter), and the many illustrations portray the people, art and conveyances involved in voyages of Alexander the Great, the Phoenicians, the Vikings, Marco Polo and more. There is a lengthy section on Columbus and subsequent explorers of the New World followed by the great explorers of Africa and the various races to the poles.
A breathtaking panorama of art makes this book a stand-out.
Book Description
Ordinary citizens frequently organize around environmental issues on which little scientific evidence exists to back activists' claims. Should we then dismiss such claims as spurious? Or should we side with citizens against the polluters?
Uncertain Hazards takes neither path. In exploring the all-too-common problem of scientific uncertainty about links between pollution and public health, Sylvia Noble Tesh shows that much of the problem can be traced to the newness of the environmental movement. The inability of scientists to find data corroborating citizens' claims stems partly from the "pre-environmentalist" assumptions still influencing the environmental health sciences, Tesh says. On the other hand, the conviction of activists that industrial pollutants threaten their health results from the environmental movement's success in promoting new ideas about nature.
Tesh points to ways that environmentalist ideas have begun to affect science, thus making more likely the discovery of links between exposure to industrial pollutants and a community's health problems. Those ways include the expansion of diseases construed as environmental in cause, the study of society's most vulnerable citizens in determining safe levels of pollution, and a new focus on the effects of exposure to chemical mixtures.
Using community activists' own words and experiences, Tesh argues against the familiar charge that activists are naive about science. It is inaccurate, she says, to characterize debates over the hazardous nature of pollution as debates between laypeople and experts Instead, they are debates between two groups of experts. It is also inaccurate, however, to see the conflict over environmental pollution only in scientific terms. The conflict has culturally important moral dimensions, and community activists draw heavily, although often unconsciously, on the lessons taught by environmentalism.

From the supplier: Judicial expansion of premises liability doctrine should make it easier for victims of crimes committed at automated teller machines (ATM) to sue banks for their injuries. The Bank Administration Institute's 'ATM Security Handbook' lists steps a bank can take to make sure premises are as secure as possible. Regulation P of the Bank Protection Act and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act may help secure recovery as well. Ways to counter the contributory negligence defense and possible liability of convenience store owners with ATM machines on their premises are discussed.

Description:
We analyze the interaction between regulatory policies and the financial structure of a fishery and show that firms with debts may respond differently to regulations than firms that have not accumulated debts. There are conditions where more stringent regulation is counterproductive, providing a perverse incentive to increase harvesting effort. We show that optimal regulation depends on the sector's financial structure, and demonstrate that there are cases when intervention is counterproductive, or too costly to implement. There are also cases where successful regulatory intervention can only be implemented when accompanied by a sufficiently large subsidy.
