Book Description
Server geeks, take heart: If you're sick of wading through pages of animation and graphics instruction just to find the nugget of info that's relevant to you, you now have an alternative! This volume leaves the designing to the designers and instead focuses on the core concepts that you (as a programmer and developer) need to master to create rich user interfaces, online advertising, enterprise application front ends, and more with Flash MX Pro 2004. By providing advanced functionality for creating sophisticated interactive content, rich Internet applications, pro-quality video, and easy device deployment, Flash MX 2004 Pro offers an ideal development environment—and one that's being widely adopted across the Web. Using hands-on projects—including two real-world applications—and exercises to reinforce learning, author
Nate Weiss
delivers important quick-start information for those new to Flash MX development and goes in depth for veterans. A companion Web site includes downloadable code, links to the working applications developed through the book's exercises, and video demos.
Customer Reviews:
For the developer.......2005-05-12
This book delivers exactly what the title implies: it teaches developers the 4 different ways in which they can tie a flash application with external data. The information found in this book is definitely not found in any generic Flash or Macromedia Studio MX book.
After reading the book I never regretted buying it and I keep it for reference. If you do not think that Macromedia's "Rich Internet Applications" are any different than regular web applications, this book might change your mind.
I keep this book at arms length.......2004-12-10
I have used Flash since the very beginning and have always just used it for design and animation and always avoided the actionscript as much as possible as I thought the entire interface was a little too cumberscome to adopt.
I am a systems integrator and mostly just a hack type of coder, not really knowing any specific language to any great degree. I just learn what I need to get by.
However, when I picked up this book, I was a little intimidated because I thought it was going to be for the hardcore coding junkies (I mean look at the title for godsakes), but I was definitely pleasantly surprised.
I have been a very active amazon customer for a long time and have never ever written a review and I thought that this book definitely deserved my praise.
Let me tell you how I ended up buying this book, despite my own coding ability (or should I say inability) and despite the intimidating title of the book.
For the last couple months I have been scouring the internet, trying to find supportive material to help me build Rich Internet Applications using FlashMX2004Pro and ASP.NET with a MS SQL back-end and without the pure knowledge of ASP.NET, I thought that my mission was going to be a lost cause, or rather I was going to have to outsource my project. But, as soon as I bought this book, I was able to connect to a Microsoft SQL database and build a Flash App that generated the buttons dynamically from an XML file and provide dynamic content right from the first example in just a short amount of time. This not only sold me on the book and the author, but got me excited about what I was going to be able to do with the new FlashMX2004Pro.
The author explains everything in a very simple and understandable manner and ties the knots, instead of leaving you hanging. I felt comfortable in learning the examples along with the server-side code he provides. (btw, he provides you with server-side code examples in Cold Fusion, ASP.NET and Java for each example - which was over and above my expectations).
Just even with example server side ASP.NET code, I can begin to develop the project that I have envisioned and I now feel that I have the proper tool set and foundation to code any idea in full.
RIA developers -- Watchout, there is a new force in town. ;)
Truly a Great Book for Server Geeks!.......2004-10-06
As the book stated, this is a book for application developers (e.g. people that write web applications using Java, C#, ColdFusion). If you are one of those people, and like me, need to learn how to use Flash as a rich client front-end and retrieves data from a server, this is hands-down the best book!! I have never used Flash in my life and this is the first book I went through. After going through it, I was able to use Flash adequately and have a VERY GOOD understanding how to bring data back from the server. The author explains everything from the point of a developer (not a designer) and this helps tremendously. Note that this book is narrowly focused, but gets the job done very well!!
After you read this book, you will probably want to learn more about ActionScript 2.0, you should then move on to Essential ActionScript 2.0 by Colin Moock.
Finally .. A Flash Book for Developers ... About Time ...........2004-09-23
This book is awesome! I've been developing CF applications for a few years and wanted to learn how to integrate with Flash. Problem was that most Flash books either leave out integrating with a database, OR assume the user knows how to use Actionscript and Flash. this book assumes neither and easily and clearly walks through WORKING examples in CF, .NET, and Java ... it's easy to see why CF is the preferred method. Geeks, you know who you are ... this is the book that will show you what you need to know to work with those artist types. If only macromedia included the content of this book in their lackluster documentation.
Thank you Nate!
Between CFMX WACK and this book .. you are so set. Bow down to Nate Weiss for his righteousness in writing this book. I'm gonna ceremonially burn the other, less complete books that I bought before finding this one. It is, as the kids say, the bomb.
A deal at twice the price ... if you can only afford 1 Flash/Data Integration book .. this is the one.
To those that didn't like this book ... do you smoke rock?
what part of "excellent book" don't you understand?
This book is for server geeks - ONLY.......2004-09-20
I am an experienced Flash MX 2004 developer but I have little experience with server side programming. I hoped that this book would help to bridge that gap but it doesn't - unless you are already experienced in ColdFusion, ASP.NET or JSP. The author says it is easy to translate the examples to PHP etc. I have some experience with PHP. However the server side code for the examples is NOT explained which makes it difficult if you don't know ColdFusion etc. Knowing PHP is not sufficient.
In fairness, the author is very clear about the intended audience (page xxi) but the back cover of the book says it is for "web developers" and "exchanging data between client and server". If you are a web developer using (say) Dreamweaver rather than ColdFusion this book is probably not what you want. If you already know Flash MX and want to learn how to integrate it with server side programs its probably not for you either. If you are truly a server geek - you will probably love it!

Book Description
This landmark collection of essays addresses the question: Given peace in the Middle East, then what? Focusing on the countries most immediately affected by the Arab-Israeli conflict, economists representing Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Occupied Territories offer differing perspectives on potential opportunities and difficulties and on the actions that would be required to redirect, rejuvenate, and sustain the economies of the region.
The book opens with case studies of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It then examines overall regional issues such as the economic consequences of peace and the economic reforms needed to maximize peace dividends. Essays in the last part focus on the transition to peace and the future economic development of the Palestinian, Israeli, Jordanian, and other regional economies
Topics addressed include the relation of defense spending to the economy, the implications of a peace for trade across borders, the benefits of economic cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians, and the role of foreign aid in economic reconstruction in the Middle East.
Stanley Fischer is Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dani Rodrik is Associate Professor of Public Policy at the Kennedy School, Harvard University. Elias Tuma is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis.

Book Description
The unprecedented changes that took place in China during the 1980s led to rapid growth in gross national product and in per capita income. This resulted in expanded demand in both quantity and quality for livestock products. The key question addressed in this book is: can China feed its growing population over the next 30 years, or will massive feedstuffs imports be required? The book presents a detailed analysis of China's current livestock industry and of related crop production that supports this, and then makes projections to the years 2000, 2010 and 2025. The projections are developed within an economic framework that gives full recognition of political processes and the role of policy making. The book makes a unique contribution to the literature and is aimed at academics and policy makers concerned with animal production, agricultural economics and Chinese studies.

Hit the beach!.......1997-09-30
Cathie Katz's amusing drawings and text should inspire every Florida resident and visitor to hit the beach. How many of us wander the beaches, picking up this and that, wondering just what the heck it is. This book will tell you...and a lot more. A small collection of sea beans and mermaid's purses has already amassed on my porch; as for the laughing gulls, I'll admire them in their natural habitat.

Outside Providence
ASIN: 0385490585
Release Date: 1998-10-06 |
Book Description
Outside Providence is a hilarious yet melancholy novel of a young man's coming of age in the 1970s. When Timothy Dunphy, native of working-class Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is packed off to a fancy prep school, he finds that the privileged elite is hardly immune to life's screwups. Dunphy must reconcile his pedigreed schoolmates with his mongrel friends back home--including Drugs Delaney, whose diet consists mainly of vitamin Qs (Quaaludes), and Bunny Cote, who thinks New England is a state.
Not far below Dunphy's comic demeanor churn powerful fears of abandonment by those he loves best: his mother, his girlfriend, and his closest friend. And he must come to terms with his complex relationship with the person he hates most, his father. As he struggles to live with the paradox of somehow loving the same man he blames for his family's tragedies, Dunphy begins to understand and accept life's betrayals, and learns how to trust in love.
Customer Reviews:
This Book is amazing.......2003-09-28
Despite the small size of the book, and the author, who has written such funny, but notably stupid movies as Dumb and Dumber, and There's something about Mary, this book effected me like no other has. i am a sophmore in high school, and my dream was always to move to arizona, much like Tim Dunphy. this book has completely changed me. my previous favorite book was IT by stephen king, and despite the 800 page difference i would have to say that i have a new favorite. for some reason i simply clicked with this book, i was the main character, and so many of his problems were so relatable, i highly recomend this to any adolescent who is looking for a good easy read, or looking for any kind of read at all. i read it in two days, and it's messages are something i will never forget. Amazing is the only word i can use to describe Outside Providence
disappointed that i saw the movie before reading the book.......2003-01-27
i saw the movie like a year ago and it became one of my favorite ever since. i didn't figure out that it was a book until a couple months ago (yeah, im stupid) and i wasn't at all disappointed with the book. i did enjoy it, but there were parts in the movie that i thought were hilarious and became attached to (i guess you could say that) but then they werent in the book. they werent necessary parts, so i guess it didnt matter. another thing is that i saw the movie and only viewed it as good entertainment whereas the book i think has some meaning but i didnt catch it cuz i was just trying to be entertained and had it set in my mind that it was just supposed to be funny. still...i recommend reading the book and seeing the movie (in that order) they were both well worth my time.
Funny, easy read, great characters.......2001-08-10
This entertaining book shows a contrast of two very different worlds: the hard life of the suburban Rhode Island blue-collar world, and the blessed life in a New England prep school (although as we find out, it's not so blessed).
As a prep-school graduate myself, I had a lot to relate to in this book. It did read like a screen play, but a very good one with interesting characters and honest humor.
Fabulous.......2001-07-17
I thoroughly recommend this book. It made me laugh and cry, but oh how it made me laugh.
If you don't read this and laugh you must be dead!
It should remind you of how you looked at life as a teenager.
A Prep School Kid's Opinion.......2001-04-14
There are so many books and movies about prep school life, but Outside Providence is by far the best. It is a wonderful exaggeration of what life is like coming from a lower class background and jumping into the strange and unique world of prep school. I have never read such an honest book in my life and I think that every person who goes to prep school should read this book. It puts things into prospective. Since I am a prep school kid, I can relate so easily to everything that Farrelly writes. I'm not so sure how much people outside of the prep school world would enjoy this book, but I don't see how anyone wouldn't!

Book Description
The Soviet T-34 medium tank was one of the most famous and effective fighting vehicles of the Second World War. Along with the German Tiger and the American Sherman, it was a milestone in tank design that changed the course of the conflict. Much has been written about the technical history of the tank and the vital part it played in the huge tank battles on the Eastern Front, but less has been said about the men who went to war in the T-34 and lived, fought and sometimes died in these remarkable machines. This pioneering book, which is based on extensive interviews with tank crews, records their experiences and offers a compelling inside view of armored warfare in the mid-twentieth century. REVIEWS "This pioneering book, which is based on extensive interviewswith tank crews, records their experiences and offers compellinginside view of armoured warfare in the mid twentieth century. It is an engaging book, and you will find yourself feeling the discomfort, anxiety, fear, pride and joy of a Soviet Tanker in WWII as you read the T-34 In Action."John Adams-Graf 8- 2007 Military Trader
Customer Reviews:
Not much here........2007-06-12
By the title, one would expect this book to be about the T34 but, in truth, the tank recieves little attention. Most of what it has to say about the tank is told, helter skelter fashion, in the first chapter. It is an interesting read regarding the men who are telling their stories but one has to take it all with a grain of salt: A T34 shooting down an aircraft or the assertion that the British Valentine tank had a powerful gun are examples of the not-so-reliable stories given. As for a study of the T34, this book is almost useless. The title is deceptive.
Good insights into theT-34 and the crews.......2007-05-07
If you are into T-34s...buy this book first.
The editor/author has an introductory chapter that covers many of the technical changes in the T-34. Specific changes, like the quality of the vision blocks, the transmission or the radio. It's very interesting in that it gives connecting clues to the observations you might have seen from reading German tanker accounts.
The book then moves into the veterans telling their own accounts. They add their practical insights. Because of the early bad vision blocks, they had to ride with hatches open if they wanted to see anything, for instance. Some of the veterans get very specific on their training. How many seconds for a stop, fire and move excercise got them what grade, for instance. You are given details on how they reacted to combat situations. Lots of connecting info for a full picture of the technical limitations of the T-34 and the training limitations of the crews come together for the most interesting book I've read on these tanks and how they were used in combat on the tactical level.
An untold story at last, but maybe dubious in parts.......2007-03-13
Having read several books about the Eastern Front from the point of view of German generals and soldiers, it was very interesting at last to get my hands on an account told from the Soviet point of view. This book is packed with detailed anecdotes, not only about tank actions, but also the whole experience of living through the dreadful "Great Patriotic War", especially as a Red Army soldier. Anyone familiar with the ways of the US, British, or German armies can immediately see the differences: less formal discipline, but seriously brutal command decisions. For instance, what British or German driver would yell at his tank commander, "God damn you, Lieutenant! Why did you fire? I didn't get to close my hatch! Now the gases have blinded me". Soviet tank commanders could be shot if they abandoned their tank, even if it was disabled. Officers took a very casual attitude to human life.
As other reviewers have noted, the interviews on which this book is based were obviously all with soldiers who survived - which automatically makes them very lucky. Tens of thousands of Soviet tankers burned in their T34s, largely because of inflexible tactics that sent them head-on against the dreaded German 88 mm cannon. Yet the T34, especially the T34-85 version, were excellent tanks in their way. I think it is wrong to discount stories of T34s that destroyed several German tanks - even Tigers - because this was perfectly feasible if they got a side or rear shot from close range. Indeed, in one famous incident a single T34-85 blew up three Royal Tigers and damaged others, when they drove past its concealed position in a corn field. (Ironically, sPzAbt.501's official records state that the Tigers ran into "massive anti-tank defences", which just goes to show how deceptive these things can be).
You have to think that it is strange for so much dialogue to be recalled word for word, after 50 or 60 years. Perhaps some of it really was burned into the men's brains, but confabulation is also a possibility. Whereas German, British and US accounts of the war are often confirmed by other sources, these stories mostly have to stand on their own. One example that struck me was Fadin's account of how two JS-2 tanks destroyed two Tigers, whereupon the other eight Tigers in the unit "decided to leave the battlefield" and "hid behind the monastery wall". That doesn't sound at all like the Tiger crews I have read about, which mowed down Soviet tanks by the dozen. With odds of eight against two - plus a faster rate of fire and better optics - you would think the Tigers would easily have avenged their comrades. The truth of the matter is that, in a fight between Tigers and JS-2s, any hits were likely to be fatal so it was mostly a matter of quick wits and tactics.
All in all, this is a very good book containing a wealth of fascinating details. You just need to read it with a slightly skeptical eye.
T-34 as the crews saw it........2007-02-02
A good and ballanced view of how it was to fight in a T-34. Unbalanced in the sense that these people are the survivors. These people are really the lucky few and readers should bare that in mind. To escape from a hit tank again and again takes a lot of luck. Some off these people have done it several times.
It is also quite clear that the difference between the ranks are small in a drafted army like the Soviet one, even more so in war time.
T-34 in action.......2006-11-10
A very good book. It tells of the trials and tribulations from the Russian point of view. For those Eastern Front fans, a must read!

Excellent Photo Essay on the T-34.......2003-03-27
This Squadron/Signal publication was the first serious attempt to document in photographs the development of the Russian T-34 tank. Author Zaloga is one of the foremost experts on Soviet era armored fighting vehicles, and he did an excellent job considering that this was published before the fall of the Warsaw Pact opened up the Russian state archives. The book has a wide format, and the pictures are well-reproduced on glossy paper. There are also numerous small sketches illustrating vehicle fittings and changes made over the course of production. The centerspread features color drawings of vehicles in period markings. Overall, the book has held up remarkably well over the years, and deserves a place on the bookshelf of all AFV enthusiasts.

History from the original source documents.......2007-04-27
"The Human Record" is a collection of primary source documents veering world history from the beginning of written history to about 1500 AD/CE. The text provides context for the original source documents and it typically is used as a companion text for many world history textbooks at the secondary and university levels. "Human Record" includes sample questions which either the student or teacher can utilize to help assess their comprehension of the material presented.
"Human Record" has been regularly updated with new editions that further add or refine previous editions, attesting to its enduring popularity as a resource at both the secondary and university levels. Outside of teachers and students however I cannot imagine there is much appeal. It does represent a wide cultural diversity of ethnic groups and religions rather than showing a Eurocentric perspective, but then again that's become the norm at both secondary and university levels rather than the norm.

Not the book it could have been.......2000-01-13
Quality, not quantity, Jack. This kind of thing slips out when you begin to believe your own legend. This book could have been so much more if it had not been dumbed-down. Not to kid level, but far enough to be below the level of the average buyer of this book. As it is, it stands in the way of the book that will not now be written, with more info on other members of the tyrannosaur tribe, f'rinstance. You're capable of better. Write fewer, but better books.
Extravaganza!!!!!!.......1999-03-28
I loved this book!!! It has so much info!! Well okay, many books on dinos have tons of info but in this one you don't have to leaf through the whole book before you find the page your looking for. This book has nice artwork to understand more clearly how this, and many other dinosaurs looked like. Very good. If you like dinosaurs, this is the book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
