Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great way to learn Project quickly.......2004-09-13

I took a Project course through work years ago, but didn't end up using Project on the job. Now they want me to start using Project at my new job. I didn't want to slog through a lot of text, so I bought this step-by-step visual book. Now all my Project skills are coming back to me. A great way to quickly review Project or learn it for the first time.

      Book Description

The life insurance industry is one of the last examples of unrestricted capitalism in this country. Despite some regulation by various government agencies, life insurance remains a largely uncontrolled financial giant. It is the life insurance plan, how it works, that shields this industry. The Mortality Mortgage, the source of the Barnes Standard is an explanation of life insurance pricing, and a call for full financial disclosure through regulation of the industry. It is intended for financial consultants, tax attorneys, CPA's, life insurance agents, and other groups who advise consumers on financial matters. Insurance buyers supply this industry with millions of dollars in premiums each year. Consumers deserve a "truth in lending law" and an appraisal process for this financial service. Life insurance is not a product, it is financing. Four factors denote financial quality: price or principal, rate, term and closing costs. Consumers understand these financial elements for homes and bonds, but they do not equate the fundamentals of financial quality with life insurance. The life insurance industry, through marketing and advertising, has taught the public to focus on premiums, death benefits, and cash values; financial elements are ignored. The Mortality Mortgage compares and contrasts three financial models: the home mortgage, the bond or debt security, and life insurance. Additionally, it provides the formulas necessary for appraisal of a life insurance plan. With an appraisal, a comparison of insurance policies is possible. Once pricing is understood, consumers will demand full financial disclosure through regulation of the life insurance industry.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected!.......2003-09-10

When I bought this I expected it to be much thicker and have alot more information! The cover posted here is wrong too! If you love Trigun, you'll like this book but if you're not really into it, then I don't think you should buy this! (Save it for a cel or use it on the episode sceries!) .. Also, when this book arrived to me, the cover was scratched and had dirt on it. Don't get me wrong, it was packaged nicely, but the book was beaten up and if you asked me, I think I'd like to be the one who damages the book!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting view of TRIGUN characters.......2003-06-20

When I first picked up this UFG for the TRIGUN series, I was unimpressed with how thin the book is. However, when I opened the fan guide, it revealed all my favorite characters in rich color from various episodes from the series. In the back (last few pages), the characters were drawn in black & white so if the reader wished, they could easily take a stab at tracing, copying or draw the characters free-hand. I am extremely interested in re-drawing these characters such as Vash, Wolfwood & Meryl...so the book really began to catch my eye with not only a creative outlook on interesting b & w poses, but cool facts & descriptions (that I only breezed over) that appeared to be pretty neat.
All of this is based on the Anime not the Manga, so if you are interested in the cool series (that you may have seen on Cartoon Network) then I suggest this guide as an interesting read, but try and find it for $10...maybe $15 at most, as this is all it is really worth.

Now in paperback: The first and only military history of the nomads who wreaked havoc on Asia and Europe for more than two millennia.

The nomadic peoples of central Asia-Huns, Bulgars, Magyars, Mongols-are still known to us for their legendary fighters Attila, Genghis Khan, and Timur Lenk (Tamerlane), as well as for their feats of calculated brutality. (Timur Lenk would leave piles of severed heads in his conquered cities; another tribe sent nine sacks of ears to their khan.) Less studied is the remarkable effectiveness of their battle techniques: for two thousand years, these horse-archer armies were an unstoppable force to sedentary peoples, be they Romans, Crusaders, Chinese, or medieval. Erik Hildinger introduces the most important of these raiders as well as a host of other tribes and examines in detail their tactics, strategies, and weaponry-a form of highly mobile and defensive warfare that even armies of today can learn from.

This book covers great spans of time and geography and illuminates little discussed, but important and interesting, stretches of history. I found it an easy read, despite the complexity and many characters.

The only downside is that more detailed maps, and perhaps a timeline, would have been useful.

A very nice general history of the steppes, but I was a little disappointed with the fact that it only covered the well known peoples and empires. For instance, no mention of the Tobas or Khitan Liao and only a passing reference to the Uighur and Qara Khitan. The aging of material he references also shows its head sometimes, with reference to the knights of Christiandom use of stirrups allowing couching of the lance (their saddle was far more important), and the Mamlukes using their steppe skills in archery (they used the Persian draw). He also stated the Sarmatians were the only steppe peoples to use a ferocious charge, but several others did too including the Toba.

But it gave a very good introduction to the warriors of the steppe. I would definitely recommend it to those who know a bit about the Mongols, but seek to learn a bit more. With those who know of the Toba, this book probably would not tell you anything you did not know.

This one of a kind book was incredibly hard to put down. It covers the history, culture, and tactics, and weapons of the nomadic warriors. It explains nomadic pastoralism, how clan politics affected warfare, and the "cult of personality" so often seen in the Steppe People (Atilla and Ghengis Khan are two famous examples). It was very well researched, and extremely well written. Anyone with an interest in Central Asia, Ancient or Medieval warfare, or just history in general will enjoy the book.

The Scythians, Huns, and Mongols--some of history's fiercest fighters--get their due in this creative book by Erik Hildinger. Nobody has previously attempted to capture the military history of the various nomads who mounted their horses and wreaked constant havoc on both Asia and Europe for more than two millennia. Their remarkable archery skill and sturdy horses combined again and again to create an almost unstoppable force that well-organized but sedentary armies could not overcome. Only their inability to create political institutions in the wake of conquests prevented these people of the steppes from building empires. Finally, the advent of firearms made their highly successful methods of attack obsolete. Their legacy, however, is well rendered on the pages of Warriors of the Steppe.

Hildinger's history of the Warriors of the Steppe makes one wonder why one of the various tribes did not conquer Europe. It reminds one that Europe played a minor, or at least not as important a role, as one might of learned.

The book is straight forward and describes the military tactics that allowed the Steppe Warriors to beat all in their path. What is most interesting is the constant flow of superior warriors for almost two thousand years and the inability of the rest of the world to defeat them. The only thing that led to their demise was the invention of firearms which allowed defenders to obtain the firepower necessary to defeat them,

The book is not an extensive history on any of the tribes or nations, whether they be the Scythians, Sarmatians, Huns, Turks, Mongols, or Tatars. In that sense the book is limited. However, it is an excellent overview for one who wishes to get a start.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Good reading.......2000-09-09

This is a well-written and researched book.

It outlines the history of nomadic raiders including the Scythians, Parthians, Sarmatians, Huns, Bulgars, Turks, Mongols, Tatars who fought against Greece, Rome, Byzantium, China, Russia, Ukraine, and the Ottomans. Hildinger maintains that raiding sedentary peoples was necessary for survival of horse-mounted warriors. They were made extinct by rifle toting infantry.

Hildinger is at his best when recounting the defensive tactics used victims of the horsemen. Regretfully, he does not detail the fighting tactics between the Tatars and the Cossacks. His best description is how Roman infantry fought the Parthians.

4 out of 5 stars Steppe Peoples - Tactics and Warriors.......1999-11-27

Erik Hildinger once again hits the mark with his latest book "Warriors of the Steppe". His prose makes this an enjoyable read. If you want to know about the people of the steppe and how they achieved success against their sedentary counterparts, this book will start you on that journey. The book initially deals with a generalization about nomadic peoples and their tactics. It then delves into specific historic groups ranging from the Scythians to the Manchu. While the book is well written, its broad nature as an introductory tract will more than likely whet your appetite for more. I am sure that in the future Mr. Hildinger's excellent writing skills in this subject area will be put to good use in writing specifically about any one of these peoples.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding. Buy this book!.......1999-11-09

As a university lecturer in military history I am constantly looking for good books for my students (both civilians and army officer cadets) to study. Hildinger's book is marvellous, and I recommend it to my students as an example of how warfare should be analysed and history should be written.

                                        Book Description

From February to November of 1906, California journalist Albert Sonnichsen made his way through the remnants of the Ottoman Empire, observing firsthand a country falling apart. Entrenched among a group of revolutionaries at war with the Greeks and Turks, he took special pleasure in seeking out the region's most notorious guerrillas (many of whom he captured in photographs). The prose is as taut and contemporary as the story is riveting-history as lived in the trenches, from one of the first "embedded" journalists. A native of San Francisco, ALBERT SONNICHSEN (1878-1931) worked as a foreign reporter for the New York Tribune, McClure's, and the New York Evening Post. He also wrote Ten Months a Captive Among Filipinos.

                                            Book Description

The historic sites and nearly pristine estuary of the Piscataqua region represent a mixture of heritage and nature unparalleled in New England. They are worth preserving. For centuries the Piscataqua region was an extended maritime community connected by the Great Bay Estuary, the short seacoast of New Hampshire and southern Maine, and the seven tributary rivers that fortify the Piscataqua River itself. Moving water shaped the region--under its vessels, at its mills, and across its marshes. Carrying the freight of our history, and holding out the promise of community-based conservation, this book (and these waters) invite you on a journey of exploration and renewal. Join the naturalists, fishermen ,and historic preservationists who have all felt the pull of this place, and who wish to sustain it in the face of the headlong development consuming America today.

5 out of 5 stars A splendid introduction to the New Hampshire Seacoast Region.......2005-08-02

The book itself is a wonderful sampler and a good place to start one's explorations of the New Hampshire Seacoast region, which goes from the shores of Seabrook NH to the south, to the town of York Maine in the north - any town touching the shores of Great Bay and the Atlantic is mentioned here, not in extensive depth, but with more than enough detail to wet the appetite of readers interested in an overview of the region's rich historic heritage.

If you are a resident of the region, this book is a must for your collection.
