      Book Description

The global economy is undergoing dramatic financial changes. The removal of technical, trade, and monetary barriers and the liberalization of world economies create challenges and opportunities for investment and financial transactions. With these changes, international finance is expected to play a vital role in foreign exchange, cross-border capital flows, joint ventures, and economic growth, but rapid progress in telecommunications and electronic capital transfers could lead to tremors in financial markets, making the global economy vulnerable to speculation, investors'panic, and economic fluctuations. Supported by the latest empirical research, this book weaves together a theoretical framework of international finance supported by the latest empirical research. Globalization provides a comprehensive analysis of traditional and modern theories of international monetary systems, problems of balance of payments, exchange rates, and related adjustment and stabilization policies for industrialized and emerging nations. Following a brief historical review, the book covers advanced theories of international trade and finances as well as related real world performance. It examines strengths and weaknesses of fixed and floating exchange rates, forward exchanges, spreading global shareholder capitalism, problems of emerging markets, international capital movements and banking activities, market capitalization and foreign debt. It also examines investment movements and cross-border mergers, economic and financial integration, related effects of macroeconomic policies in open economies, and problems of global income inequalities. The book will be of great theoretical and practical importance to students, scholars, and business leaders.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book for Globalization Study.......2001-02-14

This is a very new book printed in 2001, and I am very lucky to find this book as the source of my study on financial globalization. This book does not only cover broad range of topic of globalization in financial market but also cover the economic, social, and national aspects of globalization. In addition to that, this book does not only discuss the theoretical part but also the practical importance to make it easier for me to understand as a student. I recommend this book to other student studying on globalization in financial market, and also to working professionals interested to learn about financial markets.

              Book Description

Pressure on the quantity and quality of water from agriculture is a concern in many OECD countries. But the use of water in agriculture is essential to meet growing demands for food, and also provides environmental and social benefits. Key questions for policy makers are how to ensure the sustainable management of water resources in agriculture through coherent policies in the areas of agriculture, water and the environment. The Athens Workshop helped to illustrate what needs to be done to manage water sustainably in agriculture, in particular through reviewing the experiences in OECD countries. The main conclusions are: continuing the reform of agricultural policies; improving the transparency of water management policies; enhancing water pricing mechanisms; ensuring that all stakeholders are involved in policy formulation; and undertaking cost-benefit analyses in the design of water projects, taking into account environmental considerations.

                Book Description

The 18 th ESACT meeting was celebrated in Granada (Spain) in May 2003, and was entitled "Animal Cell Technology Meets Genomics", in order to reflect that the emerging technologies in the area of genomics, proteomics and other "-omics"-type disciplines will provide key technological assets to increase knowledge and open new horizons in animal cell technology. During the meeting a variety of top-class emerging technologies were presented together with the lastest advances in more mature industrial areas. The meeting was opened by a first session devoted to the understanding of basic cellular mechanisms, and four sessions focused on applied aspects of animal cell technology: Cell-based therapies and gene-based therapies, target discovery and biopharmaceuticals. The Granada Meeting has also seen a special focus on forefront industrial case studies. The spirit and scientific excellence of the 18 th ESACT meeting is now reflected in different chapters of the book. The book presents, in form of short papers, a high number of the contributions to the meeting, and has been prepared with the aim to provide a relevant reference of the current research efforts in Animal Cell Technology.

                    Book Description

This book aims to present an information-theoretical approach to thermodynamics and its generalisations. On the one hand, it generalises the concept of `information thermodynamics' to that of `information dynamics' in order to stress applications outside thermal phenomena. On the other hand, it is a synthesis of the dynamics of state change and the theory of complexity, which provide a common framework to treat both physical and nonphysical systems together. Both classical and quantum systems are discussed, and two appendices are included to explain principal definitions and some important aspects of the theory of Hilbert spaces and operator algebras. The concept of higher-order temperatures is explained and applied to biological and linguistic systems. The theory of open systems is presented in a new, much more general form.
Audience: This volume is intended mainly for theoretical and mathematical physicists, but also for mathematicians, experimental physicists, physical chemists, theoretical biologists, communication engineers, and all those interested in entropy and open systems. It can also be recommended as a supplementary text.

                      Book Description

Statistical mechanics deals with systems in which chaos and randomness reign supreme. The current theory is therefore firmly based on the equations of classical mechanics and the postulates of probability theory. This volume seeks to present a unified account of classical mechanical statistics, rather than a collection of unconnected reviews on recent results. To help achieve this, one element is emphasised which integrates various parts of the prevailing theory into a coherent whole. This is the hierarchy of the BBGKY equations, which enables a relationship to be established between the Gibbs theory, the liquid theory, and the theory of nonequilibrium phenomena. As the main focus is on the complex theoretical subject matter, attention to applications is kept to a minimum. The book is divided into three parts. The first part describes the fundamentals of the theory, embracing chaos in dynamic systems and distribution functions of dynamic systems. Thermodynamic equilibrium, dealing with Gibbs statistical mechanics and the statistical mechanics of liquids, forms the second part. Lastly, the third part concentrates on kinetics, and the theory of nonequilibrium gases and liquids in particular. Audience: This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers whose work involves thermophysics, theory of surface phenomena, theory of chemical reactions, physical chemistry and biophysics.

4 out of 5 stars Island Life - as seen by a Pacific Islander.......2000-04-12

A fabulous collection of short stories that more or less piece together to create a fully formed humorous novella. The author spares no-one with his cruel wit and sharp eye for the details of some of the more outrageous aspects of colonialism in the troubled paradise that is the Pacific. The finger of fun is pointed at locals and expatriates alike but what is especially refreshing is that this time it is a Pacific islander that is doing the pointing and not some foppish Englishman (Somerset Maughan) or frazzled American (Paul Theroux). For too long it has been the expats writing about the locals and this book is a great step forward and should be an inspiration for local writers wherever they may be. And best of all, you suspect that most of what he writes about isn't that far from reality.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Satire of Life in Paradise.......2000-03-03

As a former expatriate in Polynesia, I recognized much in and enjoyed all of this collection of short stories. Hau'ofa spares no one--he skews expats, aid workers and his fellow Polynesians with equal glee. If you live in or have ever lived in the islands, you'll love this. If you want to learn what Polynesia is really like, this book is for you as well.

                          Book Description

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 violently changed the course of European History. Alarmed by Bismarck's territorial ambitions and the Prussian army's crushing defeats of Denmark in 1864 and Austria in 1866, French Emperor Napoleon III vowed to bring Prussia to heel. Digging into many European and American archives for the first time, Geoffrey Wawro's Franco-Prussian War describes the war that followed in thrilling detail. While the armies mobilized in July 1870, the conflict appeared "too close to call." Prussia and its German allies had twice as many troops as the French. But Marshal Achille Bazaine's grognards ("old grumblers") were the stuff of legend, the most resourceful, battle-hardened, sharp-shooting troops in Europe, and they carried the best rifle in the world. From the political intrigues that began and ended the war to the bloody battles at Gravelotte and Sedan and the last murderous fights on the Loire and in Paris, this is the definitive history of the Franco-Prussian War. Dr. Geoffrey Wawro is Professor of Strategic Studies at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Wawro has published two books: The Austro-Prussian War (Cambridge, 1996) and Warfare and Society in Europe, 1792-1914 (Routledge, 2000). He has published articles in The Journal of Military History, War in History, The International History Review, The Naval War College Review, American Scholar, and the European History Quarterly, and op-eds in the Los Angeles Times, New York Post, Miami Herald, Hartford Courant, and Providence Journal. Wawro has won several academic prizes including the Austrian Cultural Institute Prize and the Society for Military History Moncado Prize for Excellence in the Writing of Military History. He has lectured widely on military innovation and international security in Europe, the U.S., and Canada and is host of the History Channel program Hardcover History--a weekly book show with leading historians, pundits, critics, statesmen and journalists.

Not only does Wawro do a very creditable job of covering the color and drama of the war, but he does a brilliant job of explaining the broader issues. I teach foreign relations and, in just a few pages, Wawro does a better job of explaining how Napoleon III and Bismarck upset the European balance of power than any specialist writer in the field. He also does a superb job of explaining the significance of the revolution in weaponry and tactics that would come to fruition (or doom) in WWI. All done in a very readable and accessible style.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Place to Start.......2007-07-27

For those of the reading type who have never read anything on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, Mr. Geoffrey Wawro's 2003 book on the subject is a good place to start. Mr. Wawro brings a 19th-Century European conflict to chaotic and bloody life, illustrating that these pre-World War conflicts were not the chivalric engagements they are often made out to be.

The book is structured as if for a lecture at a military university. Beginning with the reasons for the war, the author then moves step-by-step to the make-up of the opposing French and Prussian armies, to the mobilizations and then into a sequential listing of the battles. The prose is clean and very readable, and with the stripped-down structure of the book makes for a generally easily-understandable narrative. (The confusion--at least to this reviewer--is the same type found in most other operational military histories, that of trying to keep up with this Corps staffed by these Regiments who sent forward those Battalions against this Corps...) The battle scenes are brought to life by first-hand accounts dug up by the author from various archives and previous works, making for an engrossing recounting. Illustrated through Mr. Wawro's book is the effect this conflict had on the development of modern warfare, and the precedent it set for the next major European clash that came forty-three years later. The by-the-numbers explanation is what helps make this a great book for beginner students of this short but intense war.

On the question of a pro-German bias by the author, the verdict is still out. Even if Mr. Wawro were a "Rah-Rah Yay Germans!" type it is hard not to see that the Prussians were indeed the better-prepared nation for the duration of the war. The French put up good fights but had abysmal leadership, both on the political and military level. It is a surprise that Marshal Bazaine wasn't tried for gross and treasonous incompetence after the war. The Prussians planned everything as best they could in the scientific, detailed manner for which they've been endlessly stereotyped. The French leadership did little to prep and seemed to believe they would win based on their past greatness alone. While French troops did put devastating Chassepot rifle fire on the massed-infantry attacks the headstrong Prussians frequently resorted to, the 50-Points-for-Planning award would have to go the Germans on this one.

The main pet peeve that was needled more than once in this book were the editing errors, from incomplete or awkward sentences to the double-typed words that pop up in places. Overall, The Franco-Prussian War was a good read on an event that is frequently mentioned in Franco-German history but of which much may not be known.

                          3 out of 5 stars I'm taking a star off..........2007-06-15

because the author is so obviously biased and so prone to evaluating things with an all-knowing self-satisfaction. Wawro is clearly a very bright man and has done some excellent research and analysis, but the tone is so off, and he exibits so little empathy for the problems of the French or the reality of the fog of war that it hurts what is overall an admirable operational history. Wawro is not as biased and contemptuous here as he is in his history of the 1866 war between Austria, most of the German States, and Prussia, but at times he comes close. And the last anecdote about the chicken is just embarrassing--I guess that sorry bird is supposed to show us that Germany was on the road to the Holocaust or some such nonsense. Good research and excellent writing, but the great book that Wawro may have in him didn't come to fruition here. I'm hoping that age brings the understanding, tolerance, and empathy that should temper his talent.

5 out of 5 stars good book on a neglected war.......2007-02-08

This is an excellent book on the first modern war. A war which did so much to shape the modern world as the results helped lead the world towards the catastrophe of 1914. Fast paced and easy to read, it is perhaps more acessable to the general public than the other excellent one volume history in English by Michael Howard. Should be read in conjunction with the author's other book on the war of 1866.

                          5 out of 5 stars It ain't Howard, but it ain't bad!.......2007-02-07

This isn't a substitute for wading through Sir Michael Howard's tome. But, it is a very readable book on a highly important war that set the stage for WWI. Good maps, excellent prose and good illustrations. If you want to read only one book on the Franco-Prussian war, you won't go wrong here. If you've read Howard, then it isn't going to provide any revelations.

                              Book Description

This readable and authoritative volume covers the history of the Britain and Ireland between 800 and 1100 A.D. Seven chapters contributed by a team of experts cover key of this period, such as the Vikings, monarchies and other political structures, relationships between lords and labourers, developments in trade and urbanization, the christianization of society, the functions and dissemination of writing and scholarship, and relationships between Britain, Ireland and the Mediterranean civilizations to the south. To create a fully-rounded overview of the period, Wendy Davies, the volume's editor, has provided an Introduction giving a geographical context to the chapter narratives and discussing the available source material, and a Conclusion which pulls together the themes and currents running through the individual chapters.

                                        Book Description

This text details the 180 most common equations that accident reconstructionists use in their field. Not a reconstructionist? This book gives you the basic vocabulary that you need, as well as examples with each equation. This book is a handy reference for the reconstrucitonist as well.

Would you like to know how to convert the length of a skid mark into driving speed? It takes almost no time. Would you like to measure acceleration and deceleration in terms of time and distance? No problem!

Even better, we include a companion computer program. You will be able to solve relatively complex traffic accident reconstruction problems by keying in the needed information. The book shows you the equations on paper, but the software will perform the same equations in an instant!

This text and accompanying program provide the reader with the necessary tools to answer common precollision vehicle motion analysis questions, including:

                                        * If a vehicle is traveling at 57 miles per hour on a dry concrete roadway surface, how much distance will it cover as it brakes to a stop?

                                        * If a vehicle traveling at 63 miles per hour leaves 38 feet of skid marks before it collides with a pedestrian, what is its speed at impact?

                                        * If a vehicle moves across an intersection after stopping at a stop sign, how long will it take the vehicle to clear the intersection?

These are just a few examples of the questions that arise during basic traffic accident reconstruction. This text and the companion program make answering these questions and more as simple as using a four-function desk calculator.

                                          Book Description

Current procedures used for hazard identification and classification are based on persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity measurements. Assessing the Hazard of Metals and Inorganic Metal Substances in Aquatic and Terrestrial Systems provides the basis for improvements to the current model for hazard assessment. The book reviews the scientific underpinnings of the use of persistence as applied to metals, including bioavailability, and the use of bioaccumulation to evaluate aquatic species and aquatic-linked food chains. It also examines toxicity procedures as used within PBT approaches and measurements for metals in terrestrial ecosystems. The book brings together a multidisciplinary and international group of scientists, managers, and policy makers from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States to discuss various means for assessing the environmental hazard posed by metals and inorganic metal substances. The contributors include representatives from regulatory and nonregulatory government agencies, academia, industry, environmental groups, and consulting firms involved in assessment, management, and basic research of metals and metal substances. They provide a focused discussion of the fate and effects of metals in the environment, incorporating important advances developed over the past decade.

This textbook is literally a constructive piece of scientific genius. Rand is perhaps one of the most knowledgable and most well respected authorities on Aquatic Toxicology and its many subdisciplines.

After persuing through the first few chapters of this wonderfully written scientific text, one becomes very interested and more hungry for knowledge dealing with this subject. Unlike many other novels of this nature, this one is very unique in that it gives the read a clear and very indepth picture of Aquatic Toxicology and its impacts on the environment as a whole.

This text deals with aquatic toxicology from an environmental pollution aspect dealing with manmade and natural chemical toxicants. It also deals with the ecotoxicity affects of man-made pesticides when aquatic organisms are involved in the bioecologicall food-chain.

In short one can soon surmise that this text is an ideal educational asset for all who are desiring a more comprehensive background and informative session in the field of aquatic toxicology and its subdivision. It is superbly written and it details every single aspect of toxicological studies dealing with aquatic organisms in their environmental setting.
