Book Description
In this book export demand and supply are modeled simultaneously using a new proxy for globalization. Empirical estimates for the United States, Canada, and Germany show that the countries differ as to the price elasticities of demand and supply and the effects of globalization. However, the elasticity of exports to world production equals unity throughout, which is in line with constant returns to scale, but lower than the values found in previous studies that do not distinguish between growth and globalization.

Book Description
An increased standard of living in developed and developing countries has brought about a distinct rise in pollution. The problem of air pollution has specifically increased the public's awareness of the environmental and health-related consequences resulting from modern day industrial technology. This detailed collection of works devoted to the most popular methods in elemental analysis of airborne particles offers investigators a comprehensive book on the most common laboratory analytical methods currently used in trace element analysis. Discussed are atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma, atomic emission, particle induced gamma ray analysis, particle elastic scattering and Rutherford backscattering, and neutron activation analysis. Specific sections on quality assurance/quality control and source receptor modeling have also been included.

Bertie Byrd is unique. To say the least. Not only does she drive the local wrecker, but she has some mighty fine adventures.Join Bertie and her fellow residents of Sweet Meadow, Georgia on the most hilarious ride of your life.
Customer Reviews:
Loved It!.......2007-04-02
I laughed outloud throughout most of the book & thought this would make a fantastic "country sitcom" for television! Bertie is someone I would like to know! Be prepared to laugh!
Love to Read, Love to Laugh.......2006-02-28
I adored this debut novel. I had read the reviews and was prepared for funny, but in places, this novel is hilarious. And Ms. Wilson's take on Southern women is so dead-on. In reading, I had flashes of relatives that were just amazingly accurately depicted. I love it that the protagonist fails her way to success. That just made the book for me. One question remains: When can we read Bertie's next adventure?
Delightfully cute and easy to read.......2005-09-13
Bertie Byrd is your typical Mayberry RFD tomboy, with a heart of gold and a wonderful sense of humor. She isn't so lucky in love and she's beginning to wonder if she ever will be. But the ins and outs of her every day life as written in the first person, are filled with humor, delightful scenarios, and a taste of melancholy where her parents are concerned. I don't know when I've enjoyed such a light-hearted read so much, and was so pleased with the ending. Dolores J. Wilson must have a heart of gold and it shows in her writing. I'll be looking to buy her next novel when it's published in December.
A delightful and funny read!.......2005-05-19
Bertie the tow truck driver and a host of equally colorful characters make BIG HAIR AND FLYING COWS a reader's treat. It's funny and well-written. I'd compare it to Jan Karon's Mitford series or Tamar Meyers's Penn Dutch Inn mysteries as the author gives you a slice of small town life rich with drama, crises, and laugh-out-loud humor. I hope this is just the first in a series because I can't wait to read more of Bertie's adventures!
series of vignettes mindful of Mossy Creek .......2005-05-04
All Roberta "Bertie" Bird wants is to live a normal life. However that is not easy when you drive a two truck five days a week in which your neighbors in Sweet Meadow, Georgia think is a taxi service. They will do anything and everything to get their ride. Even moving out from her parents' home has not proven easy since the owner and previous resident elderly Pete Forney constantly sneaks out of the nursing home to "visit" Birdie when he is not trying to toss her out.
She has males in her life, but none reach first base because the zany world intrude from Catch 22 zoning laws to running over a mattress that destroys her wrecker that places "Dirty Bird" on national TV. Following the death of Pete, Birdie meets Pete's son Arch and his granddaughter Petey; they make her feel normal except he fled when she kissed him. Life in Bertie's beloved rural Georgia means the sublime is the norm.
BIG HAIR AND FLYING COWS is a series of vignettes centering loosely on a series of misfortune hammering at Bertie that is similar in many ways to the Mossy Creek tales. Bertie is a delight as her efforts to obtain normalcy is constantly devastated by those in need of her services. Her autobiographical account of sh*t happens is southern humor at its most jocular. Mossy Creek readers will appreciate a slice of life in Sweet Meadow through the eyes of a native daughter who just wants the garage sign changed to Bird and daughter from Bird and Sons as she remains while her brothers flew the coop years ago.

The first wave of U.S. Army Special Forces arrived in Afghanistan in mid-October, 2001; a few months later, they had routed the Taliban and taken control of the country. In fact, writes Robin Moore, "fewer than 100 American soldiers were on the ground when Kabul fell." The Hunt for Bin Laden is both a celebration of the Special Forces, "the most fearsome fighting unit the world has ever known," and a detailed account of how just a few hundred Green Berets, working alongside the Northern Alliance, were able to overcome nearly 100,000 entrenched al-Qaida and Taliban members and take control of Afghanistan in such a short time. Though Special Forces had participated in all of the small conflicts since World War II, the war in Afghanistan was the first time they were in charge of an entire operation. For these gung-ho soldiers, it was the moment they had been waiting for. From the beginning, the operation was a blend of cutting-edge and 19th-century weaponry. The Northern Alliance soldiers, though brave and determined, were often outfitted with only rusted rifles and worn-out boots. In one particularly fascinating scene, Moore writes of the Northern Alliance cavalry leading a charge on horseback while American fighter jets roared overhead dropping laser-guided missiles with pinpoint accuracy on Taliban forces. The author of the military classic The Green Berets, Moore knows his subject intimately and his access to the troops on the ground is impressive. This makes the book incredibly detailed, but unquestionably subjective, so those interested in a political overview or an objective look at the policy behind the operation should look elsewhere. This is strictly a heroic portrayal of a military victory and the difficult search for Osama bin Laden, and at times Moore's writing sounds like copy out of Soldier of Fortune magazine. This bombast may not appeal to all readers, but his deep knowledge of Special Forces and his inside information makes this book a must read for those interested not only in this particular conflict but in how guerilla and unconventional warfare is executed. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
“As the [al-Qaida terrorists] charged one wall, three Green Berets leaned over the parapets, oblivious to the enemy small-arms fire that was cracking by their heads and shoulders.
“ ‘Focus, squeeze, focus, squeeze,’ they recited quietly. . . . Each time . . . the lifeless body [of an al-Qaida terrorist] would snap back through the desert air and drop onto the sandy courtyard.”
The war in Afghanistan was the most secret conflict since the CIA’s covert war in Laos; thousands of journalists covered it, yet, ironically, little is known about how it was waged or what really happened—until now.
The Hunt for bin Laden plunges the reader into America’s War on Terror, from the first top-secret meetings of TASK FORCE DAGGER in Tampa on the afternoon of September 11, 2001, through the liberation of Kabul sixty-two days later and the tragedies of OPERATION ANACONDA. The book takes the reader into the heat of battle—as seen through the eyes of the Green Berets on the ground. This is the story of how only a few hundred men, operating from a secret Special Forces base, changed the course of history in Central Asia and destroyed a hundred-thousand-man terrorist army in less than ninety days.
Action-packed and controversial, The Hunt for bin Laden is teeming with revelations and inside information: the truth about John Walker Lindh and Mike Spann; the failure of the “conventional” generals; the courage of the Northern Alliance; the wounding and murder of journalists; and the flaws and frustrations of the hunt for bin Laden himself.
In mid-December 2001, Robin Moore arrived in Afghanistan, where he joined his old friends, whom he had celebrated thirty-five years earlier in his book The Green Berets and who were now calling in airstrikes and fighting alongside the armies of the Northern Alliance against the terrorist al-Qaida and Taliban. In less than three winter months, about a hundred Green Berets accounted for the deaths of perhaps as many as forty thousand terrorists and the winning of a war in Afghanistan—where the Soviets had found fighting a war all but impossible.
Customer Reviews:
inaccurate.......2007-09-14
Unfortunately, Amazon does not allow zero-star reviews. Many military units, including of course SF, did excellent work in Afghanistan. This book, however, is highly inaccurate. Given his history with the "Green Berets", Robin Moore was support by SF in this book. Essentially, this is propoganda intended to make SF look good at expense at any and all others. I am not saying that SF does not deserve credit for all of the oustanding work they did. If you are looking for an accurate description of how events unfolded in Afghanistan and SF's role in them, then this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a self-agrandizing book which attempts to deify SF at the expense of all others and historical accuracy, then this is the book for you.
The book is fiction, for the most part. Embellishments of things SF did, yet also missing significant contributions SF made. Not worth even a used copy.
Sad Times We Live In.......2007-05-30
I read an Associated Press article today that Jack Idema has been pardoned by Afghanistan's President Karzai; they don't seem to want this loser either.
This book is trash. It was basically written by "Jack" Idema, who is trash and it is an embarassment to the Special Operations community that this clown was ever part of it.
For those of you that believed this drivel, it is sad times we live in...
This book needs to be the first to be awarded negative stars.
"Rambo III" was a more historically accurate document.......2007-04-20
ZERO STARS. Largely a piece of fiction -- high school fanboy fiction, at the expense of an author who is highly respected in the SF community.
Poor Robin Moore. In frail health, he only wished to reunite with his beloved Green Berets as they embarked on their greatest military campaign since Vietnam -- Operation Enduring Freedom. Little would he know that at the end of it he would be snookered by an opportunist and charlatan, Jonathan "Jack" Idema, who made massive revisions to the final manuscript in order to give himself the stage he so desperately craved as a covert ops wannabe.
What's left is a grossly inaccurate, comic-book reinterpretation of Task Force Dagger, and a book that the author has since disavowed. Shame on Idema, who actually served for a brief period as a Green Beret, for conning the only civilian to successfully complete SF training. Fortunately, the controversy surrounding this book has not diminished Moore's stature in the Special Forces community.
Beware too the glowing editorial "review" in the book description from Sgt. Thomas R. Bumback. Bumback is Idema's business partner, and in league with some bogus "counterterrorism school" with a murky legal status.
Read all about Idema's exploitations in Robert Young Pelton's "Licensed to Kill". You can also look up Idema on Wikipedia for the latest.
For a good -- and true -- account of the opening salvos in the War on Terror, Gary Berntsen's "Jawbreaker" is a must.
Not real .......2007-04-02
Sadly this book was written by an author suffering from Alzheimer's and was deceived by others. The man (center) in the cover photo is a con artist who fabricated stories in the book and is also a convicted felon.
Excellent book for non readers.......2007-02-01
I thought this was an awesome book. I Was an E-6 in the Army when i read this and at the time, I was deployed to Kandahar. I often read this during my spare time and consulted a lot of the locals, and terps about everything that i was reading. When they talked about the Afghan Generals they brought up more stories and even confirmed some of the ones in the book. I'm by no means a Special Forces hooah hooah guy but i thoroughly enjoyed this book!!
Book Description
An international bestseller, banned in Switzerland by the bin Laden family, FORBIDDEN TRUTH: U.S. -Taliban Secret Oil Diplomacy and the Failed Hunt for Bin Laden by Jean-Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquie shows how U.S. national security in Afghanistan was disastrously compromised by corporate oil interests and Saudi Arabia.
Author Brisard wrote the first intelligence report on the bin Laden financial networks which was used to close down fraudulent Islamic charities that funded terrorism, a report that President Jacques Chirac handed to George Bush on his visit to the US in the wake of 9/11.
Forbidden Truth reveals that French intelligence gave the FBI clear and unambiguous information that the so-called 20th hijacker, Zacarias Massaoui, was tied to Al Qaeda, a story Brisard broke to Salon magazine before Special Agent Coleen Rowley came out publicly to say the FBI stifled the investigation.
John O'Neill the former head of the FBI's antiterrorism division - who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11 told Jean-Charles Brisard in July 2001, "All of the answers, all of the clues allowing us to dismantle Osama bin Laden's organization, can be found in Saudi Arabia."
The result of three years of investigation by a leading French intelligence expert and investigative journalist, Forbidden Truth is the untold story of the Clinton and Bush administration's attempts to stabilize Afghanistan so that U.S. energy companies could build a pipeline. In particular, it details the secret and hazardous diplomacy between the Bush administration and the Taliban between February and August 2001 a story still untold in the U.S. media talks that ultimately led the US to make threats via Pakistani intermediaries to the Taliban in July 2001 that they were going to bomb Afghanistan if the Taliban didn't comply.

Authors publicly apologize for their own false statements.......2006-11-10
The book's authors recently published a full-page advertisement in the Economist, The Times (of London) and the Financial Times apologizing to two of the victims of their slander. The below apology was presented as a way for the authors to avoid very severe penalties after a libel suit which they lost. The authors' factual errors are many and obvious: dates wrong, names wrong, claims that public UN meetings were "secret," job titles that never existed, etc. A quick Google search will turn up dozens of pages breaking down the objective factual errors on which the authors built their flimsy conclusions.
And now, the apology itself:
We, Jean-Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquié, are the authors of Forbidden Truth, a book circulated widely since it was first published in the autumn of 2001. I, Jean Charles-Brisard, am also the author of a Report entitled Terrorism Financing published in December 2002.
The Book and the Report contain very serious and highly defamatory allegations about Sheikh Khalid Bin Mahfouz and Sheikh Abdulrahman Bin Mahfouz, alleging support for terrorism through their businesses, families and charities, and directly. As a result of what we now know, we accept and acknowledge that all of those allegations about you and your families, businesses and charities are entirely and manifestly false.
The allegations were based on information which we have now been able to establish has been largely withdrawn or refuted in the intervening years since Forbidden Truth was first published, and to our knowledge has never been verified. We did not anticipate at the time the Book and the Report were written that the information which we relied upon would later be withdrawn or refuted. Notwithstanding research into terrorism financing, we have learnt nothing since the publication of the Book and the Report which suggests there is any evidence supporting the allegations. We therefore now unreservedly withdraw all of the allegations about you both in the Book and the Report and confirm that we will never repeat them.
We appreciate the very serious damage that has been caused to your reputations by these allegations. We also accept that the allegations caused you and your family very great distress. For all of this we are truly sorry.
OK but not quite accurate.......2006-05-24
Number 1 Bin Laden did not attack the US on 9/11 that was a set up by THIS ADMINISTRATION that fully planned and allowed 9/11 to happen.
Bin Laden completely denied any involvement in 9/11 just a week or so after it happened.
It has been believed at least with 90% certainty the Bin Laden is dead and has been for about 5 years.
All these 'tapes" that magically appear each and everytime they are needed by these Treasonous War Criminals that have taken the Whitehouse in a coup are all fakes just like the obviously fake video they just happened to "find" in Afghanistan showing someone that is not even a good Bin Laden look alike admitting to something he just got through completely denying a month earlier.
I dont think the REAL tape was ever played here, was played all over the rest of the planet, the FAKE tape was played here adnauseam.
The author gets some of the similarities between Bush and Hitler, and the Nazi party Vs the Neocon party, and the connections between Big Oil and War.
But these Neofascist that have taken over this country are run by the PNAC group.
They got their "New Pearl Harbor" they wanted & "planned" on September 11th 2001.
I just hope the people of this country dont let them get away with it because the rest of the planet is not fooled and they are horrified at what this administration is being allowed to do.
Michael Moore's Lost Twin?.......2005-03-05
I got this book not too long ago based on some of the reviews here. Like everyone else I want to get to the bottom of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I thought maybe this book would have the answer.
Well going through it the book does make a lot of sense. I can understand the attraction of the oil money and the involvement of politicians and other powerful figures.
But it kind of falls down when you look at the truth behind it. Some of the people in the book have taken the authors to court over what it says. And as far as I can tell the result was that the authors were wrong. Now I know it would be kind of hard to show that someone or other paid for the Twin Towers attacks and so on but you would think there would be enough to get it to hold up in court. But I am wrong about that!
So this book is kind of the twin to Fahrenheit 911. A lot of interesting stuff but you don't know if it is true or not. I tried looking at Brisard's company site and it seems to be shut down. I saw a web page that said one of the court decisions against him also included shutting down the company.
Now what I find really sad about this is that Brisard was helping the families of the 911 victims sue the terrorists. The US cannot even catch Ben Laden so it made sense to me that you could sue the Saudis and so on to get some justice. But I for one have to wonder if the court actions against Brisard are going to make it just a little harder for the families to get their fair day in court.
All in all the book is worth reading as it is pretty interesting even today but you just have to wonder how much is really true.
More Like Forbidden Libel.......2005-02-16
I found this book utterly fascinating when it came out and I have followed the contents and authors closely. Since then the authors have lost every libel action filed against them and the US has had to retract Mr. Brisard's congressional testimony. It also develops that he never did work for the United Nations despite saying so. Even though I used to think this book had the truth about 9/11 now I think it is just conspiracy theory and that's sad.

Book Description
Over time, Brazil has evolved into a well-defined nation with a strong sense of identity. From the natural beauty of the Amazon River to the exciting resort city of Rio de Janeiro, from soccer champion Pele to classical musician Villa Lobos, Brazil is known as a distinctive, diverse country. This book provides a well-rounded, brief history of Brazil that uniquely focuses on both the politics and culture of the republic. Colin MacLachlan uses a political narrative to frame the evolution of national culture and the formation of national identity. He evaluates Brazilian myths, stereotypes, and icons such as soccer and dancing as part of the historical analysis. A History of Modern Brazil will inform and entertain students in courses on Brazil and modern Latin America.

easy to read history.......2005-05-24
MacLachlan's A History of Modern Brazil provides an easy to read book on Brazil from its independence to the present day focusing on important parts of its history such as the Republic Area, modern democracy and the role of the military in its government. The book also covers a great deal of topics such as media, sports, race and immigration that have all played roles in shaping Brazil.

Simple in its own Profound Way .......2006-04-13
This is one of the most under-rated phenomenology books available. On first read it appears simplistic, but this is both its charm and power. Phenomenology is not complex - it is very simple. It is seeing (or hearing etc) what is there - before any interpretation. And this is perhaps the difficult part - engaging with things without intepreting them.
This book must be re-read and then it can be mindblowing. And many of todays 'stars' - like Hillman and Sardello owe van den Berg a large debt. Also try his other books, particularly 'Changing Nature of Man' and 'Divided Existence and Complex Society'.
A neat little book.......2000-12-25
For those looking for an accurate and concrete introduction to phenomenological psychopathology, this book is probably the best way to go. Van den Berg is a pretty good phenomenologist, and has a very down-to-earth yet evokative descriptive style that, while sometimes frustratingly vague, can also be quite revealing. Unfortunately, Van den Berg spends a bit too much of his time talking about patients' relationships with the physical world and almost no time speaking of the structure of their interpersonal relationships, making his interpretations sometimes seem strangely decontextualized and a bit off the mark. Still, this is a neat little book that can can be quite helpful when one is trying to get an intuitive and nontechnical grasp of phenomenological psychopathology.
