        Book Description

In States, Banks, and Markets, Nancy Neiman Auerbach approaches financial policymaking as a strategic interaction between two sets of domestic actors: private financiers and state officials. Through a comparative lens, Auerbach explains why the transition to financial liberalization was accompanied by economic crisis and declining growth rates in countries such as Mexico, while the same policy was associated with higher growth rates and a relatively more equitable distribution of income in other countries such as South Korea and Hong Kong. Auerbach not only demonstrates how the timing and duration of the liberalization process is the element differentiating the performance of newly industrializing countries (rather than financial liberalization itself), for she takes the analysis a step further by explaining the economic and political preconditions that put a country in the position to choose a reasonable reform path.

          Book Description

Employee drug testing is an invasive and controversial new social control policy that burst into the American work place during the war on drugs of the 1980s. Workers, judges, and politicians divided over whether it was an unnecessary and unconstitutional program of surveillance or an effective and appropriate new weapon in the anti-drug arsenal. When the dust had settled, the new technique was widely used and had been strongly approved by the United States Supreme Court. This raises the fundamental question: Why was the momentum behind testing so strong and the opposition to testing so ineffective?
Drawing on theories of ideological hegemony and legal mobilization, John Gilliom begins the search for answers with an examination of how the imagery of a national drug crisis served as the legitimating context for the introduction of testing. Surveillance, Privacy, and the Law then moves beyond the specific history of testing and frames the new policy within a broader transformation of social control policy seen by students of political economy, society, and culture. The book cites survey research among skilled workers and analyzes court opinions to highlight the sharply polarized opinions in the workplaces and courthouses of America. Although federal court decisions show massive and impassioned disagreement among judges, the new conservative Supreme Court comes down squarely behind testing. Its ruling embraces surveillance technology, rejects arguments against testing, and undermines future opposition to policies of general surveillance.
Surveillance, Privacy, and the Law portrays the apparent triumph of testing policies as a victory for the conservative law-and-order movement and a stark loss for the values of privacy and autonomy. As one episode in a broader move toward a surveillance society, the battle over employee drug testing raises disturbing questions about future struggles over revolutionary new means of surveillance and control.
John Gilliom is Professor of Political Science, Ohio University.

                Book Description

During pubertal development of the testes, germ cells pass initially through the complete succession of spermatogenic differentiation. Using the golden hamster as a model, this volume presents a comprehensive analysis of that establishing period of mammalian spermatogenesis. Detailed morphological and cell kinetic data of the pubertal seminiferous epithelium reveal a level of cellular organization and synchronization coming near to the adult situation. Characteristic, temporarily occurring perturbations of spermatogenic progression are related to specific delays of Sertoli or Leydig cell maturation, respectively. These results emphasize and specify the close structural and functional interdependence of germ and somatic cell development.

                  Book Description

This textbook is designed to aid the student in geological map interpretation. The book starts with basic concepts such as dip and strike, and progresses through a variety of exercises based on folds, faults and unconformities, up to and including the interpretation of Geological Survey Maps. In order to give a sense of reality to the text, frequent reference is made to actual examples on which many of the problem maps are based. Also included in the text are exercises concerned with borehole interpretation and correlation. The book, which is in two sections, is unique in that the second section contains worked solutions to the questions set in the first half.

                    Book Description

This book sets up a discrete universe with minimum and maximum dimensions. Singularity is rejected.

Entropic Spacetime Theory divides the universe into a kinetic system and an entropic spacetime. The kinetic system is what our present physics is all about; it deals with radiation (vector bosons) and mass particles (fermions). Relativity and quantum mechanics deal almost entirely in the kinetic system.

The entropic spacetime (EST) defines space; in this theory there is no vacuum - EST is space. Made up of energy and dipole charges, its values can be converted into length and time.

The theory offers a new description of space, a new cosmology, names space as the original creator of all new matter and radiation.

How do you make an awful movie into a very funny book? The lesson here is to stay true to the original but take it from a really warped perspective. I laughed on nearly every page. And had even more fun watching the movie again (a DVD is included). A bizarre concept for a book, but really, really well done.

                    Book Description

An award-winning aviation historian chronicles the Navy's efforts to develop a powerful sea-based strike force through the use of long-range attack seaplanes supported by surface ships and submarines. William Trimble traces the concept back to the early 1930s when American strategic planners sought ways to mount an assault across the Pacific with minimum air support. But it was not until 1950, when the Navy was threatened with losing its big carriers and long-range aircraft, that the idea of a Seaplane Striking Force was resurrected. Lured by breakthroughs in seaplane performance and the promise of the turbojet-powered Convair Sea Dart fighter and the Martin Sea Master attack flying boat, the Navy believed it could challenge the Air Force in the strategic role, the author explains, but found that the technology did not live up to expectations.

This book investigates the difficulties of weapon system procurement within the context of strategic realities, interservice rivalry, and constrained defense budgets. It also looks at an alternative weapon system that the Navy saw as a means of extending its conventional reach and as a complement to the carrier and land-based bomber used for nuclear deterrence. That weapon, however, proved unsuccessful in the end. The author helps the reader understand that while conceptual and operational flaws kept the Seaplane Striking Force from achieving the goals set for it, the idea of a mobile weapon system capable of long-range attacks from the sea remains valid. Other books touch briefly on the subject, but this is the first to examine the concept in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Bill warns that we must use jet seaplanes today.......2005-06-24

The whole point of Bill's book is to alert us that conventional Navy and marine mythologies are just that: falsehoods. Packing thousands of sailors and marines onboard surface ships to relive WW2 with lots of high tech gadgets is a recipe for fatal disaster. Long-range patrol aviation and heavy bombers can not only detect but sink large, ponderous surface fleets. The Navy had in the 600 mph P6M SeaMaster patrol seaplane jet bomber a weapon system that could strike deep and not need thousands of men at risk in vulnerable aircraft carriers. The situation today with the advent of space surveillance and guided anti-ship missiles has only made the urgency to deploy modern seaplanes even greater. The enemy to progress here is those who want to relive WW2 in aircraft carriers and expensive, bloated amphibious ships, and we are asking for another Pearl Harbor type disaster.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Plane that Just Didn't Make It.......2005-05-20

Right after World War II the Navy had a big problem. From every movie Hollywood put out, combined with excellent public relations, the Air Force was the Golden Boy of the war. It appeared that the Air Force won the war themselves (especially if you listened to an Air Force General) and there was no longer any need for any other services.

This translates to no budget for the other services. The Navy had to find a way, or better yet, multiple ways to deliver nuclear bombs. And the short range and limited lift of carrier based aircraft eliminated them. The answer was a plane to complete with the B-47. And since there had to be something to do with the water, make it a flying boat. Great idea, it got the budget, unfortunately it didn't work.

This is the story of the development of the Martin P6M Sea Master. It was a sleek looking, jet powered, high performance machine. Unfortunately technical problems delayed its development, and the needs of the Navy changed. Although it could be argued that the admirals in charge at the end of the war were as carrier oriented as their predecessors were battleship oriented.

Also the technology passed them by. Nuclear weapons got smaller, carrier aircraft got larger, no need for a big bomber. The maritime patrol application got replaced by the satellites. And by then there were a lot of concrete runways all around the world.

It's sad to see the project fail, but looking at it realistically, there haven't been any really successful flying boats produced since the war except for specialty applications such as air-sea rescue or forest fire fighting.

                    Very enjoyable reading.

                      Book Description

There were six of them - three Katherines, two Annes, and a Jane. One of them was the King's wife for twenty-four years, another for only a year and a half. One died, two were divorced, and two were beheaded. It was a dangerous, uncertain life. After the King's death in 1547, his sixth wife finds a box of old letters - one from each of the first five wives. They are sad, angry, frightened letters. They tell the story of what it was like to be the wife of Henry VIII of England.

I have collected many books about Henry Tudor. Although this book reads like a history book, the details behind the reasons for his marrying so many women, the religious upheaval and the political situations of the times makes is a great book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-12-21

This is a well-written description of King Henry's life as ruler of England, as well as a study of his more personal dealings with his wives and his court.
The book itself is beautiful. It is filled with glossy, color pictures, facts and details. This is a great reference book for all you history buffs to add to your libraries, but its also great as just entertainment if you have a casual interest in the subject or era.

5 out of 5 stars Very concise and easy to understand.......2001-05-21

This is an excellent book for any "Tudorite". It deals thoroughly, yet easily, with Good King Hal and his Katherines, Anne's, and his only beloved Jane. Having read MANY things about King Henry and his love-life, this book was to the point and helped me to appreciate not only Hal's goals, but those of his wives, ministers, and courtiers. What a wonderful addition to any Tudor-fan's bookshelf, not only for useful reference but grand for just regular enjoyable reading and pleasure.

I'm keeping in mind the time when this book was written (1899). Although the story is set during the Tudor reign of England, the behaviour and actions of the female characters are a reflection of what author Charles Major expected from contemporary females. Told from the point of view of a fictional Edwin, we're witness to the love affair of Charles Brandon and Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor. It's a surprisingly short book and really there's not much action going on. I read this novel about the same time I read "Janice Meredith", another best seller of the time. Both women were ninnies. Neither had enough brain cells to make a synapse. I've read better books set during the Tudor era and I urge you to look elsewhere if that's what you're looking for. Try Margaret George's "Autobiography of Henry VIII" for example. OTOH, if you're like me and trying to get a feel of what people were reading in other times, you may find this little work interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A great book on history without being a history book.......2000-06-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I usually hate history books. It describes all the details of the characters and the time period and really made me feel like I was there, too. I have hated history ever since it was required in college, but this story and the detailed characters have made me long to understand more of the actions of the people involved and I'm now voluntarily going to look into more books on the lives and times of the main kings involved: Henry VIII and Louis XII. I definitely recommend it!

                                  Book Description

For 50 million years, the gray whale has evolved along human shores, linking its history with human existence. Ancient and colossal, the gray whale weighs 45 tons and swims 10,000 miles along the West Coast each year from its Alaskan summer feeding grounds to winter birthing lagoons in Baja, Mexico. Proximity and beauty have made the gray whale a mysterious creature in the eyes of humans, sparking scientific wonder as well as many cultural and mythical interpretations.

In Sightings, Linda Hogan and Brenda Peterson have crafted a narrative that extends far beyond the two worlds of whales and people. A celebrated Chickasaw writer, Hogan traces the history of hunting whales for subsistence and explains their significance in tribal mythology and songs. Peterson, an acclaimed novelist and nature writer, focuses on the world of science, describing the interconnectedness of animal-human relationships and scientifically reinforcing Hogan's assertion of the spiritual bond between people and whales. Together, they capture the realms in which the gray whale has become a legend, portraying the wonder—and fragility—of the whale and its environment.

Sightings is a story of tribal people, scientific researchers, fishermen, and the everyday inhabitants of the small, coastal communities whose lives are centered around the gray whale migration. A journey through water and time, Sightings is a masterful observation of one of the Earth's most enchanting creatures.

Although I started reading SIGHTINGS the last day on a cruise ship in Cabos, (literally, moments after photographing a large pod of dolphins leaping out of the ship's wake)... my husband and I even skipped meals because I could not pull my head up from non-stop reading of this fine book. Linda Hogan's proses through a Native American's eyes were very beautiful and insightful... Brenda Peterson pucked my heartstrings with her naturalist perspective for this amazing mammal's plight and journeys through an OCEANPLANET, all the while a majority of humankind believes it owns it, yet refuses to accept responsibility for what befalls this watery world's consequence. I encourage all to read this book... its pages will open your eyes and one will not be dissappointed. Several years ago, I was one of many that wrote letters to the Mexican Government concerning St. Ignacia's breeding grounds of the great Gray Whale. The book finally told me of the outcome. When I am sailing on my boat named Rumbledoll in Neah Bay, WA this summer, or in Mexico next year, I will be searching for Gray Whales and their children... with a renewed hope of their perservation for many milleniums to come.

This book, along with Serge Dedina's Saving the Gray Whale: People, Politics, and Conservation in Baja California, is required reading for anyone who plans a whale watching trip in Baja.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Book Like a Song.......2002-09-02

This splendid book is aptly named, for the powerful glimpses in these chapters, full of emotion and drama, carry the resonance and significance of a sighting of the heart-shaped breath plume and knuckled back of one of the largest, gentlest, and most enigmatic creatures on the planet.
Sightings is beautiful reading. Each of the short chapters is rich as a poem, and indeed, many read like song or poetry, each woman's distinctive voice blending and harmonizing with her co-author's.
This book is not the standard National Geographic fare--though the authors are skilled reporters and intrepid travellers, following the whales in kayaks, small planes, boats and ferries. Theirs are the sightings of writers who don't merely observe, but who feel their subjects and feel them deeply, who use their intuitions and emotions as well as their intellects to come to their powerful conclusion: that, in this era of mass extinction, to kill such a creature as the gray whale is "an act against creation."
How lucky are we that these talented, spirited women have written this compelling and important testament to that truth.

                                    Book Description

East Africa is one of the most diverse and interesting tropical area on the planet. It is home not only to the last great megafaunal assemblage, but also to human populations with the highest growth rates. This book draws on the expertise of leading ecologists, each intimately familiar with a particular set of East African ecosystems, to provide the first in-depth and integrated account of the ecology, management, threats, and conservation of these diverse ecosystems. Summarizing the tremendous wealth of scientific research that has come out of East Africa in the last few decades, each chapter analyzes a given ecosystem type, taking the reader through the basics of its ecology, its historical use (and misuse) by humans, and its prospects for conservation. Throughout the book, linkages and similarities among ecosystems are emphasized, the historical and contemporary role of humans in shaping these ecosystems is considered, fundamental principles of ecology are considered, and interesting case studies are highlighted. Students and researchers in ecology, conservation biology, and environmental sciences will find this book useful in their work.
