Customer Reviews:
Not worth a dime........2006-04-26
This book was a complete waste of money in that it was a disapointment to the Quickbooks series which is generally reliable. I only paid $1.95 for it and it followed the old adage that you get what you pay for. This was true in this case. After reading it a few times, I placed it in my bookcase and have not touched it since.
Great, entertaining resource.......2005-05-04
I teach Bookkeeping with Quickbooks. This is one of my reference books. I love it because it speaks simply and effectively in language that is used by everyday human beings not "Geek Squad" or "CPA" lingo. I haven't found any information in the book to be inaccurate or difficult to understand. Also, unlike the Intuit published Quickbooks 2003 User's Guide, each chapter covers a specific area, so that if you want to know about Banking or Creating Lists (for two examples), you don't have to flip back and forth through different sections of the book. I look forward to getting the 2004 version of this book. I may, or may not, get the User's Guide to 2004.
Useless.......2004-03-04
Almost half of this book has nothing to do with using Quickbooks, and the half that talks about Quickbooks instructions is shallow and almost useless. Every time something confused me when I tried to decide how to use the Quickbooks features, I looked it up in this book. Half the time there was no information, and the rest of the time the information was less helpful than the instructions that appeared on the Quickbooks screen. I ended up calling my accountant so often, he told me buy a book. When I told him I'd already bought this book, he told me to buy the other bestselling book on Quickbooks , which is the one he used. He was right.
Incorrect Information.......2004-02-26
There isn't a lot of good, practical information in this book, because the author spends too much time on non-Quickbooks information and wisecracks. However, when I had a problem, the information in this book was wrong.
My bank reconciliation didn't work, and I looked up the solution in this book. The picture of the reconciliation window the author used to explain the problem wasn't the same as the window in Quickbooks. The author's "solution" was to let QuickBooks make a change to my records - which my accountant won't accept. I finally went to a bookstore and found another book, which gave a clear explanation of the problem, how it happened, and how to fix it (it was the QuickBooks Official Guide by Ivens).
This book is not only missing important instructions for Quickbooks users, some of the instructions that are in the book are wrong.
Haven't read the book yet, but emailed Steve & he answered!.......2003-09-11
I haven't read the book yet, but I just bought it. I read the Mr. Nelson's statement (third reveiw listing) and took him up on his offer to email him with questions. He answered very quickly and was very helpful! I figure that any author that makes himself that available, must really believe in his book. Thanks Steve, appreciate your time.

Book Description
This book is at odds with the presuppositions behind a received view on law as a systematic solution to social problems in the name of justice. It argues that neither do facts in law represent social reality, nor do norms represent a moral ideal. Representationalism as such, in its various legal guises, is put to the test of what is called here `the interception hypothesis'. Although it is derived from the theory of literature (the theory of narrative) and corroborated by several close reading analyses of legal texts (both decisions and statutory rules), this hypothesis aims, in the first part, at providing an alternative model for the structure and the value of legal knowledge. The second part shows how this knowledge is operative in fundamental concepts like democracy, punishment and (contractual) obligation.

Book Description
Biomolecules and cells are critical components of biosensors and biomaterials, but in order to function in an artificial environment, they must be immobilized in a manner that does not affect their interaction with target analytes. Biosensors demonstrate that we can harness the incredible functions of living molecules and cells for our own purposes and are therefore at the forefront of technology. Moreover the applications of immobilized biomolecules and cells are expected to expand far beyond biosensor applications and indeed are already used for pharmaceutical production and testing. Biomaterials will become increasing common as they are being developed into toxic filters, artificial organs, and even silicon chips. This book provides a selection of methods for the immobilization of biomolecules and cells on a variety of surface with different geometries and chemistries so that they retain their function and guidelines on which method to use. Also included are the analytical techniques to measure the functionality of immobilized biomolecules. All the protocols have been tried and validated by the authors. Immobilized Biomolecules in Analysis: A Practical Approach is an invaluable guide to all researchers in the fields of biosensors and biomaterials. Research in biosensors is carried out in a wide variety of fields including biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, laboratory medicine, environmental and defence research. The protocols are written so that an extensive prior knowledge of biochemistry is not required to use them.
Book Description
Over the past 20 years, the field of biosensor research has had a significant impact in both laboratory research and the commercial sector. Over that period, biosensors have revolutionized the care and management of diabetes and have had important impacts in several other areas of clinical
diagnostics. Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific have all seen the rise of small and medium sized companies seeking technical and application niches in the manufacture or use of biosensors. The current activity in both gene and protein 'biochips' can be seen as the latest set of tools that
allow users who are not analytical science practitioners to make technically complex and reliable biological weapons and the need for their rapid and reliable detection will need to be met by devices that have many characteristics in common with biosensors.
This book provides a practical introduction to the many skills needed in the highly interdisciplinary field of biosensor technology. Edited by two internationally renowned experts in this field, it draws together contributions from active researchers in Europe, North America and Asia who describe
how to implement techniques as diverse as protein engineering, optical and electrochemical instrumentation, single cell electrophysiology, screen printing and numerical modelling in the context of producing biosensors for both laboratory and commercial applications. As well as the many detailed
protocols and experimental tips, the book also offers an overview of current research in this area as well as pointers to its further directions. The diversity of topics covered means that it will be suitable both for those already active in the area who wish to expand their repertoire of
experimental tools and for those who are just starting out in biosensors research.

Book Description
Out of Sight! is an explorer's guidebook for excursions into elusive and invisible worlds that cannot be experienced directly with our senses. It is a popular introduction into modern natural science that provides insight into the advanced and expensive technology required to explore universes too small for the eye to see. These are the domains of cells, on which all life is based, and quarks, atoms, and molecules, the basic building blocks of matter. This book explains, in nontechnical language, how we obtain our knowledge of the micro-universe. With the help of many clear diagrams, it describes the structure of living cells, atoms, and molecules as they are found in everyday objects, as well as in more exotic and dramatic forms of matter, such as antimatter, stars, and black holes.

Two Roads Diverged.......2005-07-21
In what has now become a veritable genre- private letters of demons based on Screwtape Letters- The Wormwood File excels. It is readable, engaging, and exquisitly written. There are other books in this genre that are silly, or far too polemic. Ones that I have to read thinking, "Well, I agree with this point, but I not with that."- and it ceases to be an exercise in meditation. Not so with this book. There was a lot of food for thought. There were a number of times when I had to put the book down and pray, and examine my own life, and repent. This is a deeply practical book, the epitome of idealism.
While the author clearly comes from a particular church perspective- high, sacramental, possibly Catholic- he doesn't pound it in, and in fact strongly preaches the need for ecumenalism within the body of Christ. He brings in new insights I didn't know, like the meaning of the words symbol, and diabolic. The only problem I found was that the book ended a little too quickly, suddenly, and I didn't really feel like I'd heard the end of the story in this case.
Even when Forest comes down strongly on an issue- like the Enemy's (God's) dislike of war, and how it corrupts all that are involved in it- he also comes down on the other side, speaking of pacifists who become so filled with hate at anyone who waves a flag or wears a uniform. That caused me to think for a bit. Forest doesn't have his demons play favorites. The road to hell is many-forked.
"C. S. Lewis' Vision Restored in a Post-Christian Era".......2005-01-19
As a die-hard C.S. Lewis fan, I was delighted to read the latest offering of the prolific peace activist and social commentator, James H. Forest.
Emulating the format of the modern classic, Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters," Forest concocts a high-tech, original brew of inverted, infernal wisdom designed to penetrate the darkness of sin and pierce the "culture of death" that so warps and pervades our present age. His treatments of such issues as consumerism, war and peace, and abortion strike me as particularly poignant and powerful.
Socially conscious mainline Protestants, Evangelical Christians, Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians will feel particularly at home with Forest's apologetic and worldview.
While Lewis died on the same day as the Kennedy assassination, the highest accolade that I can accord to "The Wormwood File" is to describe it as worthy of attribution as "Jacks'"[= Lewis' nickname'"] spiritual offspring.
Forest has previously authored magnificent short, illustrated biographies of Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day, along with a handful of other titles. He's struck a new chord with this novel treatment from "cyberspace," a fascinating and engaging read to add to his collection.
Highly recommended both to Lewis fans and to people of faith and of good will who struggle to make sense of life in a contemporary world that not only isn't Christian, but often enough is less than human as well.

Reviewing reviews.......2004-12-09
Full disclosure: I am acquainted with Jim Forest. I've heard him lecture on several occasions and have been a participant on the Orthodox Peace Fellowship mailing list with him for many years.
I have not read either "The Wormwood File" or "The Devil's Inbox," so I cannot comment directly on these books. However, I was very disappointed to read the slanderous comments about the author posted by the first reviewer. The accusation of plagiarism is a very serious one, and it is to Jim's credit that he responded as charitably as he did.
An examination of the product details for both books reveals that "The Devil's Inbox" was released on January 1, 2004, while "The Wormwood File" came out in October 2004. I do not know how long it takes to bring a book to publication, but I suspect it would take much longer than ten months.
Perhaps we ought to view the recent publication of these two books as testimony to the enduring influence of C. S. Lewis across confessional boundaries.
in the footsteps of C.S. Lewis.......2004-12-01
I don't often comment on reviews of my own work but was astonished at the commemt posted here by Daniel Caffe that "The Wormwood File" is copied from or inspired by Barbara Laymon's "The Devil's Inbox," a book I neither own nor have read nor -- until seeing Daniel's review -- knew existed. "The Wormwood File: E-Mail from Hell" is, however, a borrowed idea. The inspiration comes from C.S. Lewis' "Screwtape Letters." Several years ago, when I was on the verge of giving a copy of Lewis' classic to a friend, I re-read it and was struck by how profoundly the world had changed in the past sixty years. Screwtape's letters were addressed to a rather dense novice named Wormwood. I wondered what sort of letters Wormwood would write if he had survived into our own time. "The Wormwood File" is the result. I hope the result would please Lewis. I have to admit it was alarming to discover that I didn't have to dig very deep within myself to hear a demonic voice. On the other hand, it was fun writing a book that I hope will not only make life a bit harder for demons but give the reader some laughter.
Forest = Copycat, Wormwood = bust, buy The Devil's Inbox.......2004-11-16
Though plaguerizing and idea stealing have long been prevalent in high school classrooms, it is a sad day when it finally arrives on our christian bookshelves. Forest's The Wormwood File is a carbon copy of Barbara Laymon's The Devil's Inbox and deserves to be kept next to a Xerox machine, not in libraries. As an avid reader of theology and christian literature, I wholeheartedly recommend the Devil's Inbox to anyone seriously interested in finding a contemporary C.S. Lewis.
-Daniel Caffe

Entertaining history and leadership skills.......2002-05-13
This great little book is history with a purpose - by far the best sort of history - and it teaches leadership using an original technique. Set in the fifth century AD, in the time of the decline of the mighty Roman empire, the author gives us an apposite slice of life and then has one of history's great leaders comment upon it. Attila, the formidable king of the Hun confederacy, teaches leadership round the campfire to his chieftains. It is certainly an easy way to learn history - I read it twice - light, well written and well-researched. The lessons are entertaining and say a lot in a few lines. Some of it is very insightful, I went through the book with a pencil to note the best points. Occasionally it is a little repetitious and lapses in the logic, but I enjoyed it and learnt a lot.
Create an atmosphere of trust, competency and reward ..........2001-11-30
Most people today think of Attila the Hun as an evil, ruthless barbarian, but this is a shallow and ill-informed take on his life and many successful campaigns.
Attila had a great love for his people, and maintained only modest comforts for himself. He used his war chest to empower his tribe and his people. Attila does not discriminate based on age, sex or race, but forms his judgements based on merit, success and the individual's potential.
Vain and beligerant pseudo-warrior management types will be disappointed to learn that Attila's victories were borne on the back of competence, even-handedness, reasonable reward and mutual respect. Anyone looking for simple parlor tricks and manipulative techniques to fool or bully co-workers and subordinates into submission will be dissapointed here. This book is about improving the self and becoming a better person in order to lead victoriously, not creating a facade to hide the miserable and incompetent soul.
"Victory Secrets of Attila the Hun" helps to reveal the context of the ruler's life and its parallels in the modern world through history, parable, and fantasy. It is a thoroughly enjoyable read for principle-based managers concerned for the health, welfare, growth and prosperity of their company, and the lives of those around them.
Eye-opening and informative........1998-10-13
Gave me insight to my "Atilla" at work and help to understand him. I love the book and hope to get more of Wess' books.
Readable entertaining insight into big biz hierarchies........1998-10-07
Esteemed executive, Wess Roberts, weaves an involving teaching tool of equal parts history, fantasy and illustrative instruction. This unique "how to" on building and leading a big business hierarchy from the middle, and the top, is also a true to history, interpretive extraction of the Hun empire revived and empowered by one man, Attila the Hun. Attila's own success is not only an analogous base for the lessons at hand but also their validation. An easy, concise read for top and middle managers on the go; an overlooked gem in a pile of rubblous hype.

Compact and a Must-Have!.......2003-07-30
I was lucky enough to travel from my home in Southern California to Tasmania to study abroad through my school, UCLA. At the University of Tasmania I had Professor Kirkpatrick for my Vegetation Management class, for which we bought this book. I assumed it would be dry, too large, too detailed, and boring, but it ended up proving to be inspiring, well-written, informative, and to the point. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a) environmental issues, b) the management of plants (especially Australian plants, although the knowledge is useful for any bioregion), or c) some general philosophies, arguments, and reasonings for conservation of nature and the effect of humans on the environment. I am a Geography major and risked overpacking my bags for the flight back to Cali in order to bring this book back; despite my broke status at the end of my study abroad semester, I refused to sell this book back.
